Question Is there a way for a document to have internal links to subheadings? (Writer)

I want to create a personal use encyclopedia for a fantasy writing project. It'd be very convenient to make references to other entries function as links to that entry, like what large Wikipedia articles can do with subheadings.

I made a LibreOffice Impress extension that lets you control presentations from your phone

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a LibreOffice Impress extension for a while, and I’ve finally published the first proper release: LibreOffice Impress Remote 1.0.0.

It’s currently available through GitHub Releases and is under review for the LibreOffice Extensions directory:

https://github.com/bora-yarkin/libreoffice-impress-remote/

The idea is simple: I wanted a presenter remote that doesn’t require a separate mobile app, cloud account, or proprietary service.

You install the .oxt extension, open a presentation in Impress, select Slide Show → Start Remote, and scan the QR code with your phone. The remote then opens directly in your phone’s browser.

Part of my motivation was that the official LibreOffice Remote for Impress iOS app hasn’t been updated in years and no longer works on current iOS versions.

Right now, the extension can:

  • Show the current slide on your phone
  • Show presenter notes below the slide
  • Keep previous and next controls pinned to the bottom
  • Jump to the first, last, or a specific slide
  • Show a per-slide timer and a total presentation timer
  • Display the slide in fullscreen on supported mobile browsers
  • Work locally over the same Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot
  • Use LocalTunnel, direct IPv6, or a self-hosted relay for more difficult network setups

The main intended workflow is local mode. If your laptop and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network, or your laptop is connected to your phone’s hotspot, the phone should connect directly to LibreOffice.

That’s the setup I care about most because it’s simple and doesn’t depend on an external service. It also works behind CGNAT because the connection stays inside the local network. However, some routers, public networks, hotspots, or firewall configurations may block communication between devices.

The other modes are included for people who want to experiment, but I’d still call them experimental. LocalTunnel, direct IPv6, and the self-hosted relay mode are there for situations where a direct local connection isn’t possible. If you have a VPS or a free tier cloudflare account, you can also run the included relay server yourself. Although I have not tested these features extensively. You can get the relay server and the related configurations on the extension's settings page when the relay server is selected. I have not created a separate release for these for now.

This is a volunteer FOSS project. I’m not a company, and I can’t promise perfect compatibility across every operating system, browser, router, carrier, and LibreOffice version. I cannot promise every feature someone needs to be included in this extension. Local mode works well for me, but I need more testing on other setups. I have made an extension because i needed it, then decided to advance it and release it as best as i can.

I’d especially appreciate reports from people using:

  • Different LibreOffice versions
  • Linux distributions
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • iOS Safari
  • Android Chrome or Firefox
  • Home Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, and phone hotspots

So far, I’ve mainly tested it with macOS and an iPhone across a few different carriers and ISPs.

If you try it and something breaks, please open a GitHub issue with your operating system, LibreOffice version, phone browser, and connection mode. Logs and error messages are very helpful. Even a simple “it worked on this setup” report would help me build a realistic compatibility picture.

Contributions are also welcome. If you want to add a feature and have the knowledge or resources to implement it, I’ll happily take a look.

Thanks to everyone working on LibreOffice and its extension ecosystem. I’ve wanted something like this for Impress for a long time, so I’m happy to finally have a first release out.

Question Writer, dated entry since day 0

I'm keeping a log starting at day 0 in Writer, with each entry being Today's Date / Days Since 0 heading. How can I automate "days since 0"?

The dusty parts of my brain says this would be a custom property and field, maybe as a custom heading for easy entry.

Question Label Print cuts off left side

From time to time I have to print labels. Last time I did this was in April and it printed as expected. Two days ago I printed the same labels on the same system and printer ... and they were cut off at the left side!.
Why is that so, what might have happened?

My system is Linux Mint 22.1 (both times). Printer is Brother DCP 357 c.
Libreoffice was 25.8.6.2 in April and 25.8.7.3 now.

Would be very grateful to know where to look for changes that did this and how to correct that mishap.

Question Libre Writer - Table Cells are Reformatted when Inserting a Row

In Libre Writer 25.2.3.3 on Linux Devuan I have a table all formatted as I want.

As soon as I right click "Insert" -> "Rows Below" the table is reformatted:

The text font defaults to Default Paragraph style, but worse the Cells, Number Format is reset.

The really annoying consequence of this is dates are converted into numbers

20/09/2026 becomes 46285

This happens even if I create a brand new blank document, default formatting and just create a simple table.

Yes, I already have Tools -> Options -> Table -> Number Recognition Unchecked

How do I disable this behaviour? I want my tables to stay as I have formatted them. Why would Insert New row reformat all the cells?

I exclusively use .odt

Question How to print an envelope size that isn't in the printing options?

Post image

For some reason C6 envelopes are an option in the page size settings, but they aren't in the print options. Why not? And why isn't there an option to print to a custom paper size at all? I have a manual feed tray that can take a roll of thermal paper if I want.

Question Gutters on mirrored pages?

I have a very recent build, working under Windows11. I put the technical info down below. So, if you choose mirrored pages under page style, it only gives you the option click gutter position as "left" in the drop down box (you can click right in the box but when you reopen your file it's unchecked and your margins have been changed). I thought I could solve this apparent problem by setting the gutter to zero and making my internal margins that much larger.

It seemed okay when I looked at it, and the output pdf, and the file when I imported it into Canva's Affinity. But when I uploaded it to my Amazon bookshelf it got flagged as not having a gutter. When I previewed it there the pages split in half in the weirdest way I ever saw. Here's a screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/whJFNqU

So I don't know how to format page style/margins in my odt file to fix this problem. (I started out before all this happened by not having mirrored pages, just left & right, and specifying a gutter. Amazon accepted that file but when I got the physical proofs there was a gutter on one side of the seam and not the other. In other words, the text was lopsided on the page. That's when I decided to go back in and choose mirrored pages, and ran into the next problem.)

My Mendeley Cite extension has been accepted into the LibreOffice Extensions catalogue

Hi everyone,

I recently developed a Mendeley Cite extension for LibreOffice Writer, and it has now been reviewed, accepted and published in the LibreOffice Extensions catalogue:

https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/99616

If, like me, you are currently writing a master’s thesis—or working on any other research project, I hope the extension proves useful.

If you try it, I would really appreciate your feedback. Bug reports, suggestions and ideas for new features or improvements are always welcome. You can share them in the comments or open an issue on GitHub:

https://github.com/pedrocandeias/mendeley-libreoffice

Mendeley Cite is currently designed mainly for Microsoft Word, while LibreOffice users have generally had to rely on the older plugin included with the legacy Mendeley Desktop application. I created this independent, open-source extension to provide a similar citation workflow directly inside LibreOffice Writer.

The extension currently allows you to:

Search your Mendeley library and insert one or multiple citations Add page numbers, prefixes and suffixes Generate and refresh a bibliography Automatically renumber and restyle citations when the document changes Switch citation styles without reinserting references Filter references by Mendeley folders when using API synchronisation

You can connect your library in two ways:

BibTeX: export your Mendeley library as a .bib file and use it entirely offline, without API credentials Mendeley API: sign in through OAuth and synchronise your library and folder structure directly

The initial release includes APA 7th, Harvard Cite Them Right, Chicago 17th author–date, IEEE and Vancouver.

Citation data is embedded in the document, so citations and bibliographies remain refreshable even when the original Mendeley library is unavailable.

This is still an early release, and some limitations remain, including plain-text bibliography entries, a limited number of built-in styles and no interoperability with the field codes used by Mendeley Cite for Word.

This is an independent, unofficial project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Mendeley or Elsevier.

One day, I crashed LibreCalc badly, and it somehow translated into none of the tools working. I tried formatting the pc back as if it were new, but it still won't open after a fresh installation. Can you provide initial guidance so you can help me troubleshoot this, what information do you need?

Bug? Why is this software borderline unusable?

Why is the text in the table I made on Impress just randomly changing fonts and sizes?

Like what part of changing the table border thickness should even have an effect on two random cells in the table having their fonts swapped and sizes randomized?

My Microsoft files not converting perfectly did not surprise me and I figured I'd just sit down and recreate them natively on LibreOffice and just didn't realize how horrible of an experience this would be. Why is this shit bugging out every minute?

I just think the out of the box experience is horrendous. Why is the toolbar popup for stuff like tables at the bottom of the screen by default which means the whole document shifts up and down as you click in and out of the table.

I love open source projects and frequently donate to them and had seen LibreOffice spoken of enough that I made the switch for my new PC, but I need someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong or assure me that this project is just not up to snuff yet.
