I am not much familiar with Latin at all, so I am hoping this community can help. The Latin text of Against Heresies by Irenaeus of Lyons (book 2) uses the word “perseverantia”. Many online resources say that many times (in these old days) that had to do with holding fast during hard times, like persistence during affliction. But some others have also noted that “continued existence” is also in the semantic range of the word (and that is what Against Heresies is certainly talking about). So is it true that persistence during affliction and the continuation of existence are both in the semantic range of this word?

Buenas, estoy tratando de aprender latín y griego. Quiero entender mejor de donde vienen las palabras que utilizo y que se me haga más sencillo aprender lenguas que tienen las mismas raíces que el castellano.

En el colegio escogí la rama de ciencias por lo que mi conocimiento de estas dos lenguas clásicas es nulo. El año pasado intenté empezar con latín en Duolingo. Estuve casi 100 días haciendo lecciones pero sentía que no progresaba, sólo que repetía las mismas frases una y otra vez.

No deseo obtener un conocimiento profundo de estas lenguas (dominar la gramática a la perfección), sino adquirir la capacidad de leer un texto en latín o griego y hacerme a la idea de lo que hablan. Además, también me gustaría satisfacer la necesidad que tengo de conocer la etimología de las palabras. Creo que me ayudan a entender mejor el propio significado que tienen y así puedo utilizarlas más adecuadamente en el contexto en el que esté.

Si conocéis algún recurso de internet para aprender latín y griego como me gustaría me ayudaríais mucho.

Mi interessa molto la lingua latina, tanto da aver intrapreso un percorso di studi universitario dedicato. Il problema è che, come da molti riconosciuto, lo studio necessario mi ha allontanato dalla pratica traduttiva e dallo studio della grammatica. Mi spiego meglio: durante gli anni dell'università, i corsi vertevano maggiormente sull'approfondimento letterario, a volte accompagnato dallo studio di testi in latino che, data la brevità dei tempi e la mole del testo, non permetteva un vero e proprio approfondimento.

Ora, però, vorrei recuperare l'abilità nella lingua arrivando a tradurre fluentemente. Mi rendo conto che riprendendo anche per qualche ora torno a muovermi con sicurezza nel testo. Non nego, ovviamente, di avere qualche lacuna...

Potreste consigliarmi un modo per ricominciare con lo studio e affinare i metodi traduttivi e il riconoscimento dei costrutti, i differenti tipi di periodi ecc...?

Hi i am 20 years old and about to start University. I am looking for ways to start learning Latin and the best way to go about studying it. I have a lot of free time and ive always wanted to learn multiple languages basically becoming a linguist. I want to learn Latin as a starting point to learn Spanish, French, and Italian and maybe a couple of Acient languages such as Greek and Sumerian.

Okay so like the title says, I’m taking 201 in September because I desperately need the credits and can’t afford to fit literally anything else into my schedule. Any tips or resources to learn quickly?

This is a topic I haven't really delved into until recently, since most of my academic work is not really tied in with this topic and I have time for little else these days but work and more work. 😅 Basically, I've always been intrigued by efforts to translate more modern (in a loose sense) literature into Latin. I've found the end products of those translations to be an interesting and worthwile pedagogic tool. Unfortuntely, I know of only two (somewhat) widely read and discussed translations like that — The Hobbit and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. If anyone knows of any other, I'd love to hear about them! And, besides, what do you think of translations of more contemporary books into Latin, do you find them good for engaging students?

For many years now, the Italian publishing house Recinetensis (Recanati), called "ELI", has been striving to make the Latin language known as a living language. There, two "cloudy" monthly commentaries are published, which are entitled Aduléscens and lúvenis. Their language is simple and easily understandable, even to beginners, which is why these volumes have been very successful throughout the world. In this way, the austere Roman language is easily and delightfully learned and learners are invited to speak Latin.

Hi people, I've been recently working on a translation of Aeneid that kept the meter the same. I have attempted to translate it into lines broken up into 5 dactyls, then 1 iamb. Below is part of Sinon's speech in this rhythm (Sinon rhymes in this speech but that's unique to him, not part of the actual narrative)

This was found at an estate sale in a box that was otherwise filled with junk. The last photo has a handwritten note that explains it a bit, but in brief: this was a personal notebook of William Goodson written in 1675. It has the Greek and Latin text of Luke 1:67-79 (aka The Song of Zechariah), then a long essay (argumentum) expounding on the themes of the text. I'm curious if anyone knows anything else about the author or the text, but at the very least it's interesting to look at. That handwriting is really something.

Whitaker’s words hasn’t been working properly for me recently. Some words show up fine, but many are just blank or (for the mobile app) “no match found”. I’m wondering if anyone else has the same problem as me, or if my devices are failing?

I looked this up and found a 10-year-old post on the subject but was wondering if anyone could shed a little more light on the difference between these two terms, which seem very similar.

Is "ipso facto" more a way of saying "therefore" while "per se" corresponds more to "intrinsically"? Thanks for any help you can provide!
