My husband and I will be road-tripping from Calgary → Fernie → Nelson → Revelstoke → Calgary in the first week of September and are looking for some amazing hikes to break up the drives.

We’re specifically after 4-6 hour hikes between each town, or hikes around the towns themselves, ideally right on the route or with only a small detour.

We love alpine lakes, ridgelines, summits, waterfalls, anything with incredible views.

What are the absolute must do hikes between these stops that you’d recommend?

I used to live in Canmore and Banff. I know it’s a hell if a lot smaller out that way.

But what’s it like? I imagine the Rockies are beautiful out that way. Probably hard on the dating scene though.

Hi BC friends

I am feeling a bit nervous regarding the three recent black bear attacks ( resulting in fatalities ) in Canada. .
I live in rural Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, surrounded by woods. I have always heard to not concern yourself with black bears, just be loud in the woods and be conscious of food storage as to not attract them.

Should we be having different discussions regarding bear safety ? I now feel way more tense when outside alone in the evening / night - whereas I used to love having fires & barely think about b. bears.

Am I overthinking this and the chances of a predatory attack are extremely low ?

I figure you folks are the bear experts .. hoping you can chat

Hi Koots friends! My dad is visiting Creston for the weekend and I thought it'd be nice to do some fishing together. It'll be my first time fishing, and while I know some nice swimming spots, I don't know if they'll be good for fishing too. Any suggestions within an hour of Creston that are relatively accessible for someone with mild mobility (knee) issues? Walking a small incline pathway would be ok, but scaling down a steep incline to get to a shore spot would be a little too much. Bonus if the spot is also swimable for a cooling dip.

Oh, and we have our licenses and he's already bookmarked the regs.

Hey friends! Does anyone have intel on whether anyone’s been riding up healy this year? I know there’s been some back and forth barricade putting up and moving etc, but has anyone ridden in yet this season?

I really like Nelson or Revelstoke. Revelstoke has very few positions and a lot of volunteers. Does anyone here have recommendations for possible fire departments I could look into for hiring for career positions? Anyone know of departments that have a lot of career firefighters?

My wife and I are making our first ever western roadtrip and visiting friends in Kelowna. Despite pushing retirement age, we've never seen the mountains up close and personal. Our last overnight before we hit Kelowna will be in Cranbrook. We are debating the best route to take. Hwy 33 or Hwy 97? I understand Hwy 97 takes a bit longer and has more scenery. Is hwy 33 worth it to save time? Dining suggestions in Cranbrook along with places to stop on the drive are also appreciated.

So I just put an offer on a condo today in Radium and will be working in Invermere. I move August 7th!

I’m super new to the area, but loveee being involved in the community. Usually I’m part of different sports teams, art groups or volunteering in different areas and going to lots of events.

I don’t know anyone here and have no idea where to start. I went to the library and visitor centre in radium and got “The Columbia Valley Social” newsletter thing but I’m really interested in joining some sports teams or hiking groups and meeting people. I’m 25 F so if anyone has any recommendations that’d be great!

I’ve also joined a crap ton of Facebook groups for the area but I’m not 100% sure which one would be the best for me to post something like this on.

I just want to extend a heartfelt thank you to this group who gave me so many invaluable tips on where to go, what to do, where to eat, and how to maximize my motorcycle adventure! The towns were all so cute I ended up cutting one of my big ride days in half so I could meaningfully spend time in Nakusp, New Denver, Kalso, Nelson and Castlegar. I will have to come back to go hit the Balfour ferry and ride Crawford Bay to Creston… but the time I spent talking to locals, walking the towns, and eating delicious food was worth leaving some kilometers on the table.

Hello everyone! I was curious what the boating/ lake life is like in Castlegar? Have heard most of the lakes are too cold to swim most of the summer?

Has anyone here taken any trades programs (bonus points for Electrical) at the Selkirk College in Nelson recently-ish?

I applied at TRU a few months ago but the waitlist is huge and it sounds like I won’t get in until August of 2027 at best. So I looked around and found that Selkirk has openings in their February 2027 foundations program and applied there, but would really appreciate hearing from folks who’ve done the program or know someone who has. Pros? Cons? Did it set you up for success and finding a job?

• Is there a decent sense of community?
• Does everyone share the lake access nicely?
• I know the lake level moves a lot through the year. Is it largely unusable for a large part of the year?
• Are there any services nearby? Groceries, gas, restaurant etc.
• Is it growing quickly?
