My least favourite card isn't Meteor. My least favourite card isn't Coastwatchers or any of the weather cards. My least favourite card isn't any of those cards that people think is broken.
My least favourite card is Convoy Attack. I hate this card with a burning passion. It's not because it's broken. It's not even because I see it all of the time. In fact, I have never seen anyone play this card. I hate this card because it is without question the worst card in the game and it doesn't even come close. It is absolutely miserable to play and use.
For those of you who don't know what the hell Convoy Attack is, let me describe this disaster of a card. It has gorgeous art by Achille Beltrame who did the front covers of La Domenica del Corriere, where a lot and I mean a LOT of Italian art for Kards came from there. Think Naval Engagement, Attack in the Colonies, most of the infantry, and a few other notable cards like Betasom.
Convoy Attack itself is a 0K Standard Italian order from Covert Operations. It rotates out this year. The text on it reads "Deal 0-2 damage to any target." While it is seemingly innocent, it is frustrating in so many different ways. For those of you who have played Hearthstone, you may remember Crackle or Implosion from GvG and all of the RNG frustrations around those two cards.
Convoy Attack ramps that up to 11. While Crackle and Implosion guaranteed at least some damage, Convoy Attack has a chance to completely whiff. Admittedly, this is very flavourful. But in a gameplay setting, it is miserable. I just have been cursed by the gods or some shite like that because about 75% of the time I play this card I roll 0 damage. Your average damage should be 1. 0 + 1 + 2 = 3 / 3 = 1. But you're never guarantee that damage. That 1 damage is in theory and a myth.
Allow for me to paint you a scene. You are playing an aggro deck. You draw Convoy Attack and send it face. Or maybe you just use it to ping down a guard and swing face. And then you roll 0 damage. Really, you just needed 1 damage. Just one! You had a 66% chance to succeed and now you are down significant tempo and a card draw.
And we're not even talking about the deck cost yet. You have to include this card in your deck, which means you need to play Italy. That's more than okay, Italy has wonderful cards already. And that's true. They do. Allied nations are usually a bit more powerful than Main nations because of the 12 card restriction. Therein lies the issue. Why would you ever put this in your deck? This is clearly an aggrsssive card. But if you want to be aggressive, you run 4 x Fiat C.R.42s, 4 x Macchi C.200s, 2 x RM Roma, and 2 x Attack in the Colonies. Why would you ever put Convoy Attack in your deck when there are so many other better aggressive options? Perhaps you could even slot in Semovente DA 75/18 if you wanted to. Maybe you could use Macchi C.205 or even a Fiat G.55 as well. You have so many better options.
So I ask again, why would you ever Convoy Attack in your deck? You should never put this card in your deck. There is no reason for this card to exist. It has zero synergy except with maybe Enigma. Compare this to Dug In which outclasses this card tenfold. Dug In only targets units, but it provides one immediate shuffle *which is free* and one later. It does so much more than Convoy Attack even in a vacuum outside of Shuffle.
I think Convoy Attack exists solely to be a joke. It is a useless card that only makes your deck immediately bad by putting it in, and it will never, ever be good. The design is unsalvageable. Maybe if cards produced Convoy Attacks like Light Infantry or Blasts or whatever the hell, it would be interesting. But no, it wouldn't be. Because then you would have even more RNG when this is a game where people have historically hated RNG starting with Outrage/Retribution and now Weather.
In conclusion, I will leave it brief. Fuck this card. I hate it from a game designer perspective, I hate it from a theoretical perspective, I hate it whilst I am playing with it, and I only like the flavour of the card. That is it's only saving grace but even then it isn't enough.
