News President Trump imposes 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods, claiming unfair treatment over U.S. autos, alcohol and cheese.
•
•
•
•
u/xpietoe42 43m ago
why can’t there just be free trade of all goods between us and canada?? Its our closest neighbor and ally. Why are we bickering with canada or even mexico and even our european friends??!! This makes the world into an angry tit-for-tat place, which he likes doing for some reason
•
u/Obligation_Still 20m ago
The dairy thing exists both ways to protect the industry. Just like US does not import Canadian dairy nor does Canada import US. Alcohol is obviously a move to protect industry as well and the auto thing is just a move by the U.S. to try and encourage greater domestic manufacturing.
The reality is that the U.S. is an import economy, it always has been and as long as the U.S. dollar is as high and as strong as it is this will never change.
The fact that importing for the U.S. is such a problem is so stupid IMO because they can buy foreign products (from China, from Canada, from Mexico) at such a steep discount it’s crazy to me that they’re trying to burn this bridge. Even the auto sector where a lot of the products have always gone back and forth across borders to offer best value/price (in theory).
But I get it they’re trying to stimulate jobs and manufacturing but it’s very clearly not working and the jobs report is worse than it’s ever been and all these tariffs are just making things more expensive for the U.S. and doing nothing to help or stimulate economic growth. Once again the only ppl who win are the corporations.

Trump will never beat Carney, Carney has shit more finance and business knowledge than Trump ever had.
The exports between Canada and USA are dripping daily, whilst Canada signs deals with Europe and the rest of the world.
This new tariff is like trying to charge someone who has already left the shop.
•
u/Wide-Satisfaction-82 2h ago
I wish someone would put a tariff on the amount of manure that comes out of his mouth

I hope he and his family are held accountable for profiting off of the suffering of Americans. We don't like seeing all he does to you and seeing folks suffering from his decisions.
He's so damn ignorant. It's not lost on us that a Canadian died fighting fires in California shortly before Trump bitched about the wildfire smoke we were all inhaling on twitter.
•
u/ratiofarm 1h ago
From your mouth to the gods’ ears. Unfortunately, we’ve got a lot of work to do to course correct, and the people who voted for him and the party that supports him have just as much to answer for. Whether through greed, ignorance, malice, or a combination of all three, the actions of the right have inflicted enormous damage to us at home and on the world stage and it’s probably going to take several generations to repair our reputation and regain the trust of those who considered us allies.
I’m sad to hear about the Canadian fire fighter losing their life trying to help us, may they rest in power.
•
u/Blink3412 5h ago
He still has no clue how tariffs work
•
u/lucky-laser-777 1h ago
No he does. He’s just trying to hoodwink the American people into thinking other countries are the problem and stealing from them, while your president is taxing/stealing from the people and filling government coffers and his investor buddies.
•
•
u/Atlesi_Feyst 4h ago edited 3h ago
Yup. Most people still don't.
In simple terms
It's a "fee" imposed to make the consumer more likely to buy locally or from another lower tariffed country, at their rates and prices.
Their way of trying to starve the Canadian economy while their consumers get fucked trying to find similar margins and vendor/suppliers. The higher costs associated get passed on to the customer. Canadians shopping for American products aren't affected unless the Canadian government sets their own tariffs on American goods.
Can't wait for the next reasonable president to undo it all in a new/renewed trade agreement.
•
u/darforce 5h ago
Didn’t we already establish with the Supreme Court that he can’t just impose tariffs? What am I missing
•
u/Krull88 4h ago
They said he couldnt use that specific law. Since then hes spent the time trying to find a new one, looks like hes ready to try again. His issue is going to be he agreed to the dairy tariff, he signed CusMA. And the federal government has nothing to do with the alcohol ban and not all provinces are supporting it, which means hes going to have to attack provinces individually. Admitedly i dont know much about the auto sector though.

Trump thinks its about cars, alcohol and plastic, sorry: cheese. It is al about Trump with his 51st state talks
•
•
u/Dizzy-Cartoonist3011 6h ago
The cheese one I can understand. Supply management is a horribly regressive system that all of Canadas trading partners don't like.
•
u/Krull88 4h ago
You would rather we allow the us to dump sub par dairy products at well below market rate because the american dairy industry is government funded and ours isnt. Allowing them access to be able to do that would collapse the Canadian dairy industry completely.
•
u/Dizzy-Cartoonist3011 4h ago
Where to begin:
- There are very few regulatory differences between Canadian and American milk production, and only one related to quality. rBST is the biggest real difference, it is banned in Canada and not in the USA. rBST is a growth hormone that has no impact whatsoever on milk composition - and less than 25% of American milk is produced from cows with rBST. The quality regulatory difference is Somatic Cell Count (SCC) limits. In Canada the limit is 40,000 SCC/ml, in the US it is 750,000 SCC/ml.... but in practice the average SCC count is actually LOWER in American dairy (about 180,000 SCC/ml vs. Canada's 230,000 SCC/ml). Either way, an easy fix would be to allow only American dairy that abides by Canadian regulatory standards - so over 75% of American milk would be just fine.
- Canadian dairy farmers receive very similar input and baseline subsidies that American farmers do - subsidized gas prices, insurance prices, etc. The difference is that instead of relying on a literal cartel to raise farmgate prices to the highest maximum while not carving in to aggregate demand (which supply management does), the Americans set price floors funded by the government. That actually applies upward pressure on farmgate prices by increasing demand - the US government usually then sells the surplus below cost to schools, military, etc..,.. or sometimes they even just dump it down drains.
- It is almost comically unlikely that ALL Canadian Dairy producers are so inherently uncompetitive that they will ALL have to sell or fold if they are forced to compete. But even in this almost inconceivably unlikely scenario, the production capacity would still be there if American firms in tandem decided to raise prices after monopolizing the Canadian market - so Canadians could still choose domestic and other countries milk and cheese products.
All of the "justifications" for supply management seem to be driven by ignorance or almost comically improbable fears. It's actually pretty remarkable what the Dairy Farmers of Canada lobby has been able to accomplish - they've been able to convince Canadians that expensive groceries actually makes them more food secure, and that getting ripped off for milk and cheese is a patriotic duty. I have to hand it to their marketing campaigns and political bribes.

u/NedShah 7h ago
Out of curiosity, which American companies are desperate to break into the Canadian cheese market?

•
u/Dizzy-Cartoonist3011 6h ago
Canada has a system called supply management that has had 200-300% tariffs on foreign milk and cheese since 1972. Naturally, Canadas trading partners have not like that system since 1972.
Canadians would also really not like the system as it dramatically raises the price of dairy related products in Canada - but the Dairy Farmers of Canada is one of the biggest lobby groups in the country and spends between $80M-$100M a year convincing Canadians that expensive cheese is a patriotic duty.
•
u/Obvious_Badger_9874 6h ago
So america has a dairy product problem.
They needed to subsedise it as not to make the beef market pummel.
But the dairy farmers saw a loophole that if they produce dairy the usa gouvernement will buy it no matter what.
So they produce a lot more than needed.
The usa have propaganda to use more dairy products. They need to get rid of it but don't know how.
•
u/Dizzy-Cartoonist3011 6h ago
Supply management related tariffs have been a bone of contention for all of Canadas trade partners since the 1970s.
•
u/sunbro2000 6h ago
I'd never buy it even if it was on our shelves. Canadian dairy is a far superior product.
•
u/Dizzy-Cartoonist3011 6h ago edited 5h ago
There's very few regulatory differences between Canadian and American milk, and only one from a quality control standpoint (somatic cell count limits). Actually, American milk on average has lower somatic cell counts, which is a legitimate metric of quality.

...Canada exports cars?
•
•
u/Antioch666 10h ago
Yes, Canada is a massive exporter of cars and automotive products, consistently ranking as one of the top auto-exporting nations in the world. Vehicles and automotive parts constitute Canada's second largest export category by value.
They don't have a domestic brand but Toyota, Honda, Stellantis, GM and Ford all have massive plants there building cars and car parts.
95% of their automotive export goes to the US. Chances are if you live in the US and drive any of those brands you will have the car or parts of the car built in Canada.

u/Street_Peace_8831 11h ago
He still doesn’t get that tariffs hurt the consumer, in other words, the American people. This does not punish Canada.
•
u/Independent-Offer290 1h ago
He understands it. If goods are too expensive Americans won’t buy them and look to alternative options. Yes, goods affected will be more expensive, but at the same time it will damage the Canadian economy.
•
u/Street_Peace_8831 1h ago
It will not damage Canada’s economy as much as you and he thinks. They will simply go to other countries and trade with them. We are the losers here, not Canada.
Americans won’t stop buying, even if it is more expensive. This has been proven. This attempt to force Americans to buy American, doesn’t work and will not work.
•
u/Independent-Offer290 1h ago
Canada’s only advantage is a lot of their exports are commodities. But a tit for tat escalation with those will be bad. Even potentially could be considered a national security threat against us.
•
u/redredskull 10h ago
No he gets it. This is to punish the rest of the Americans not compliant with his vision.
•
u/Street_Peace_8831 8h ago

Lol. They can't stop ordering pot ash mate. They can't stop ordering lumber. We have the largest land border in the world. It's cheaper to ship things across it than to buy from anywhere else in the world. Even with trumps tariffs.
This isn't going to reduce demand. It's just going to increase costs for Americans.
You think a little more.
•

While I agree there is some merit to Canada coasting off American tax dollars. More than you would believe. They are kinda like the pretty wife of the millionaire. Ez life. But what choice did we have historically. We needed them to keep their military weak and on our side. Pissing them off isn't super helpful but I doubt they care what trump does. He is out of office soon.
•
u/shannon48 13h ago
Canada does run a trade surplus with the US but if you remove energy (oil and gas), Canada has a trade deficit with the US. The US is self sufficient in oil and gas, so why do you think it imports from Canada? Because it's more profitable that way due to the different composition of the oil and geographic proximity of Canada to some states. So it's actually in US's interest to run a trade deficit with Canada. If anyone is coasting off here, it's the US
•
u/Illustrious-Fee-3559 14h ago
Uhhh, I guess that's how you look at it in America?
Everywhere else in the world, I think most would agree that we already do pay a tax to Americans.
Your currency that everyone uses, that your government loves to print to balance your (at times poorly managed economy), and when American dollars lose value, everyone who holds USD that isn't your government essentially gets shaken down for money. To fund stuff like your enormous defense spending that apparently defends us, yet your administration likes to accuse us of free riding on your good graces.
We live in pax Americana, we suffer Americanization and supposedly thrive together. You live in a democracy, and the rest of us live in a limited democracy because your country thinks and does like to control what other countries do, and non of us voted for you
•
•
u/lalospv 14h ago
Dollars are not piad by the taxpayer. Dollars are printed and they have the biggest military in the world to support them. The other countries have to actually produce stuffnto get dollars and pay stuff.

Because he levelling the battlefield for USA's, The EU, and NATOs adversaries. Trumps intent for America is too make it as weak as Russia post 1990 economic collapse to give leverage to his friend Putin and the Russians. To further aid his friend Putin and the Russians, Trump is also aiding Putin and Russia's friends (USA's, NATO's, and the EU's adversaries) this is partly why he is tariffing specifically USA's allies. To make Americas allies hate America, to isolate and weaken the USA. All to aid 'his friends'. I.e. USA's The EU's, and NATOs adversaries.
Donald Trump is committing Treason left and right, with a corrupt Supreme Court. Where is the checks and balances?

Certainly feels that way. I remember when the Democrats were impeaching him the first time, and the democrats made long speeches like Adam Schiff mentioning "it takes 'moral courage' to do the right thing even when it is hard." Well, that didn't pan out did it? Felt like pulling teeth during that whole speech.
Where is the 'Moral Courage' now? That goes for both Democrats and Republicans.
Neither are providing enough for the People and their values. Many are actively negligent in their duties.
