Chemical castration is reversible, fairly easily. Physical castration is not, especially if done with a meat cleaver - a dull meat cleaver. Or - in men at lest - add in a non- delicate prostatectomy. That ought to be something of a deterrent.

This is a classic populist politician move: it's looks good on paper and means jack shit in practice except for edge cases.
Rapings due to arousal are the minority. Rapes are more for the sense of power over someone else, and not being able to get a stiffy/moist during it won't stop the rush you get from dominating the helpless.

I know the word castration is a scary word and people will think it is a scary punishment for these prisoners (which it may be).
But in reality I think what they are really saying with CHEMICAL castration is they are providing medical treatment to reduce the compulsion those people have to sexually abuse/assault.
Which is interesting because it tells me they are testing to see if those folks can be released back into society. That in itself raises an eyebrow because treatments like that are usually life long, as in meds need to be taken for life.
So, does the state then pay for lifelong treatments or is the rapist/pedophile expected to find a way to continue the treatments on their own dime?

Yep, the criminal justice system in this country is a joke, at best. The entire system is simply designed to churn out convictions. It’s more of a plea bargain system, than a trial system. The average citizen being held to trial for a crime might be innocent until proven guilty, but that’s a farce, too. Then there’s the fact that most states have a private prison industry so the militarized police force, with their coffers full of money from funding garnered from the so-called war on drugs aids the for-profit prison system. A vicious cycle all around. I could go on and on here, but what’s the point?

Not really. Most rapists aren't in it for sexual pleasure. A small percentage are, yes.
