What is OpenGOAL? [How to play the Jak games natively on PC]
OpenGOAL is a fan-developed way to play the PS2 Jak and Daxter games (created by Naughty Dog) natively on PC. This means they take full advantage of your PC's hardware and do not require emulation software. You must own copies of the games in order to use it, OpenGOAL does not include game data. Please use the following links to download and use OpenGOAL, read their install guide + FAQ, and access their discord where you can get support and communicate with the developers and other players.

Discussion Subreddit rule update(s) regarding AI.
Fishermen and Jak 3 completionists,
After consistent reports about AI usage in our subreddit, I figured that it wouldn't hurt to do some light updates to the rules. A pass has been made at all of them, and the way they're worded is really all that was needed for the first five. Rules about AI usage, however, have been removed from #2 and put in their own category.
We know Jak and Daxter is not exactly an active franchise right now (keep huffing that hopium!), and we appreciate anyone who wants to keep discussion and creativity alive in this community. At the same time, we don't want the sub to become flooded with AI-generated fan art, fake screenshots, fake leaks, fake concept art, or other content where the main “creative” element is simply something generated by a tool.
So our general stance is this:
- AI-generated media or standalone AI-created fan content will not be allowed.
- However, we also understand that AI can be useful as an assistive tool. If someone uses AI to help organize their own thoughts, clean up grammar, translate something, format a post, or better express an idea that is genuinely their own, that is not what we are trying to prevent.
- The distinction we care about is authorship. If the "heart" of the content is yours, and AI is only helping you communicate it more clearly, that is very different from posting AI-generated images or content where the prompt is the whole contribution.
As always, moderation will involve some judgment calls, but the goal here is not to punish good-faith participation. The goal is to keep the subreddit from becoming flooded with slop content.
If anybody has any questions, suggestions or complaints, feel free to shoot us some mod mail or comment below.

I finally 100% completed Jak II
What a journey it has been. I had to start over twice due to orb glitches and not paying attention / tracking where it might have occured. I have been playing this since I was 6 years old, with a large gap between my 9th and 20'th birthday, after which I played sometimes. Decided this year I was gonna complete it 100%.
Really dreaded the jetboard challenge as I remember it being extremely frustrating to get. Saved it for last and it took like three tries. Here is my top 5 things I found difficult:
- Scattergun challenge
- Mastering the Onin game (now its easy, but it took some learning)
- Reverse races, only the last once has a shortcut I believe and the opponents are racing gold times themselves and are constantly hindering you
Things I found surprisingly easy:
1. Port race: this one is just a freebie
2. City race: Everyone dreads this one but I actually enjoy it and it helps I know the route by heart
3. Every regular race: I hated the racing as a kid, as an adult, the regular races are surprinsingly doable.
What were your thoughts on completing the game and the challenges?

Jak 3 - Texture Overhoul [OpenGOAL]
Hi! I've created a full texture replacement pack for Jak 3 OpenGOAL version.
It uses ESRGAN for 4x upscaling.
Now I'm running a new refined version and experimenting a mixture version trying to fuse ESRGAN upscaling with generative AI.
So far the v1.0.0 pack is available here: https://www.nexusmods.com/opengoal/mods/31

Does Jak II get easier if you constantly die?
Basically title. For some reason I thought this was the case, but I'm not finding anything concrete when I look it up. I'm doing my first Hero mode playthough ever and got to "Destroy Ship at Drill Platform", was mentally preparing to be stuck for a long time but did the first section in about 7 or 8 tries, second section first time and last section in about 4 or 5 tries. Just wondering if I got an easier time for sucking. If it matters I'm on the original PAL PS2 release.

I finished Jax X, meaning I have fully completed TPL, 2, 3, and X!
That was...
That was pretty fun.
Speaking about X first:
The gameplay itself is good. Really good skeleton of a combat racing game. When things were not sliding or I wasn't getting insta killed as soon as I got into first, that is. A little too slippery (would lose grip in what feels like every damn corner unless I had a heavy set armored to the teeth vehicle.)
My biggest gripe had to be the rubber banding AI. Holy crap man. I could not hold a lead for more than what felt like 10 to 15 seconds. Otherwise, you get insta killed by the electro ball as soon as you even touch first place.
The tracks are damn fun. Except for the ***sewers***, and that really short ice track. The arenas were a ton of fun. Almost no insta kills, setting traps was a blast, etc.
Music is fantastic though.
I am almost 100% sure that if I was playing this with humans, this would be an infinitely more fun experience.
The story? Ngl, loved it. I am a sucker for the Keira and Jak ending. Got a lot more characterization than I thought I was gonna get out of a combat racing game.
It tied off the series with a nice neat bow. I like it, and it definitely completes the story of Jak for me. Having finally played 1, 2, 3, and X, I would probably put them in order of fun like this (Most fun to least fun, but still fun):
1, 3, 2, X
The whole series was enjoyable, though 2 can be quite frustrating sometimes, along with X. Ironically, I like 1, 2, and X's story more than 3, but 3 was just a fun romp (reflector my beloved).
What do you guys think, both about X and the Jak series as a whole?

Trilogy (spoilers) Spoiler
Recently for the first time I am playing the Jak & Daxter games. After the announcement that they’re shutting the ps3 store down later I decided to grab Jak 2 & 3. I bought the precursor legacy before years ago but never played it.
I was talking to my uncle about Ratchet & Clank and how much I love it and he suggested Jak & Daxter so I finally bit the bullet.
The Precursor Legacy was extremely fun (and extremely hard), I loved the characters and all the sections. The story was solid too, I ended up being able to platinum it and pretty quickly jump into Jak 2.
Jak 2 was insane. The tone shift gave me whiplash and the gameplay was more fun to me. I liked the edgy style of it and the story was REALLY good. The racing and driving portion made me wanna rip my hair out but I definitely rank it above the first one by a mile (also that Sig death fakeout had me losing it)
I’m about to download and play Jak 3 which my mom used to own physical and I played it a bit when I was younger but I only remember racing on a weird dinosaur?
I will update when I finish the games but I’m really having a blast!

We won't get another game like Jak X bc Naughty Dog wants to make movies, they don't wonna make true "video games" anymore. Jak X was a game first, fun second, story last. Ppl dont want those gaming experiences anymore man it sucks

We don't even have representation in the a.i slop used to clown on Playstation 😥
Sort of a good thing I guess?

Given how bots seem to come here, more or less they use imgur to upload slightly altered images to repost and farm Karma
They have shitty names, are a few hours/days/months old, and all you really gotta do when you see a imgur upload is just type the title on the subs search bar to see its a repost.
Dead internet theory is real and reddit proves it to me every day lmao.
Honestly who uses imgur for images onto reddit when you can just upload it yourself to a post x)

2 and 3 in Software mode
Are Jak II and 3 stable when using PCSX2 Nightly on Software mode? I see lots of people complaining about speed problems and glitches when emulating these 2, but I tend to prefer games on software mode so they run as close to original HW as possible.

Any 3D platformers similar to Jak OG and Super Mario 64?
I'm looking for a game that kind of more or less follows this formula.
Super Mario 64 was great, but too easy (made sense back then).
Jak 1 arrived and was more or less the PS2/Sony equivalent with superior graphics, superior gameplay and more challenging in comparison. It just perfected the formula. Jak 2 and 3 kind of experimented, which I didn't like.
Is there anything similar to these kinds of platformers that's came out after the Jak years that doesn't depend on a gun/shooting like Rachet & Clank, but the gameplay is centered more around your abilities (especially jump or float mechanics), etc. ? (For PC).

Games in universe not about Jak and Daxter?
So I know Naughty dog doesn't want to make a "Jak and Daxter" game right now but I had the random thought of how interesting a new game would be just set in the universe. Let's for example say the Legendary Hero Mar founding and building Haven City could be a standalone story set within the universe that just adds more that we know would end in his death. Or what happened with the other 3 Sage's/other characters after the main group goes through the Rift Gate? Or even just how they became Sages since we pretty well know it already with Samos. Thoughts? Concepts for other ways they could just be set in universe? Edit: removed what I thought would just be a fun extra because nobody wants to actually discuss this with it there.

"The hardest Jak and Daxter mission"
Some say "Get seal piece at Water Slums" mission is one of the hardest of the trilogy. What they don't know is that it's one of the easiest if you just punch through your way. Not even playing it on Hero Mode makes things harder.

Jak 1 post lost precursor city is hell incarnate
After being on this subreddit a while and always knowing about Jak and Daxter, late one night (3-4 days ago) I set up opengoal with some iso’s and got to playing. MAN was it an insanely fun experience I felt like an actual kid reliving the glory days of platforming games. The animations, the seamless open world, the precursor lore, the interactions between characters , all of the world designs and enemy types, DAXTER bro it’s all so goated. Then I realize “man there are a LOT of orbs no way I’m getting 2000” fast forward 4 hours and I’m sitting on nearly 900 orbs damn near a 50% completion (dopamine rush). I realize the collectathon was exactly what I needed right now so I get even deeper in, collecting every scout fly, orb and power cell, I realize I missed a few and backtrack no biggie, I’m still having a blast. I then enter precursor basin, I tell myself “man I kinda loved the driving segments now a whole map just about driving ? Sick” oh the horror. I then spent an additional 2 HOURS to get 8 power cells. Keep in mind, everything up to this point took me a cool 4-5 hours. I put down the game and tell myself I need to sleep. I wake up the next day and tell myself “every game has that one level haha no biggie”. It’s been 3 days since then. I’m 80% in, about to finish spider cave. And I’m so sad disappointed and angry. What happened ? Did naughty dog decide smoke salvia the second the game reached 75% completion ? Did they decide “I would love it for our players to not have an ounce of fun anymore right at the finish line, wouldn’t that be hilarious” I’m really struggling to find the energy and motivation to even do the final section (I have the power cells to do it). I know I’m a bitch made cry baby that needs to jus git gud but GOD, I’d rather S rank expert mode Dr Kahls robot with the right side of my brain turned off than finish getting the power cells and precursor orbs. IMO, all of volcanic crater from start to finish was terribles (minus the interactions with the 2 miners).
TLDR; man bitches about the final parts of a 20+ year old game and wonders if he’s alone in this feeling
