Rules update: spam prevention and posts requiring serious help

Hello lovelies!

We've recently noticed an increase in posts that may be from spammers or AI training bots. While we don't want to discourage folks who are genuinely seeking help, we also want to make sure we're answering actual questions.

Therefore, we've updated automod to remove posts from brand new accounts and those with low comment karma. These posts will ask OP to verify themselves, after which the post will be approved. While we understand that some people may need to use a throwaway account to ask sensitive questions, we hope this will ensure that most posters are here in good faith.

We're also removing posts where identical text is posted to multiple subreddits. This will hopefully count down on spam.

Additionally, automod will allow only two posts per user per seven days. This should allow people to ask questions, but cut down on excessive repeat posting.

Additionally, we've clarified the rules to address situations that are beyond the scope of this sub. We're happy to help with questions about asking people out, buying cars, and taking care of curly hair, but some issues require professional help. Therefore, posts seeking about the following will be removed:

  • Self-harm or suicide
  • OCD reassurance seeking
  • Sexual abuse of minors
  • Grooming
  • Eating disorders

As always, don't hesitate to send a modmail if you have questions, or report any comments that are unkind. Reports are completely anonymous, and help us spot things that should be removed.

Thanks for helping us make this community a safe place! ❤

Mental Health I really just need someone to be nice to me right now.

I'm 33. I've had anorexia binge-purge subtype for 25 years. I am in the middle of a bad relapse and I am severely underweight. My behaviors are extreme. I'm scared - it feels like this relapse is happening to me, not by me.

My boyfriend is distant and feels neglectful. He used to be supportive, now he's just mean and not there. He's the only person in my life other than my mom, who lives across the street from me and is complicated.

I'm at work right now. I have a good job with good people but I will always be on the outside looking in. I'll never be "one of the girls," even though all of us working in the office are the same age and unmarried without kids. I was isolated for a long time, and thus do not have the social skills and sometimes I feel like I vibe as weird, or wrong somehow, but not tangibly enough for me to know what to fix.

I get to eat (and keep down) 3 peanut butter crackers a day. That's half a pack. 105 calories. The arbitrary rule I live by is I have to wait until my office mate goes on break around 1pm to eat them. I don't want anyone to see it. It takes maybe 45 seconds to eat these 3 crackers.

I spend my mornings white knuckling chest pain, dizziness, low blood sugar, waiting for cracker time. Today when that time finally came I had eaten 1 and a project manager came in and started yapping at me. He saw me eating. He interrupted my only minute of relief in the day.

It was the last straw. I threw the rest of the crackers out - they're contaminated now - walked right by him and have shut myself in the bathroom. It's been 15 minutes. I sobbed for the first 10. Now I'm typing this.

I am doomed to this illness. I've been inpatient more times than I can count. I've tried to recover so many times and even if I were to try again, it's not worth it. I'll just end up back here. I'm unlovable, I'll die alone regardless. I'm so fucking lonely. I'm so fucking scared.

Thank you if you read this.

Friendship and Social Life My best friend cut me off and I can’t move on

Hi, I’m 20m.

About a year ago my best friend cut me off. He ended up ghosting me and there wasn’t much communication but I knew I was in the wrong.

I was so excited talking to friends that I would be too loud and annoying and dismissive of serious issues he had. I didn’t realise how big of an issue he had with me until he left without saying goodbye.

I thought as time went on the pain would lessen, but it hasn’t at all.

He was like a brother to me. We are both autistic and he was the only person I felt like I could be myself around. We would talk for hours and hours every single day about our interests. I felt genuinely happy when he was around.

Now I just feel empty. I don’t really want to make new friends out of fear they’d leave. I know that sounds stupid. I also have struggled feeling close with friends because they’re not my best friend and I don’t feel the same way.

I just thought it was a friends for life kind of deal with this guy. I feel like a monster for driving him away and have just spent the last year wallowing.

I once talked about this to someone and they said not every friendship is meant to last forever and it’s okay for them to end but it just made me so angry. I don’t have close family and he was my family. You wouldn’t say siblinghood isn’t meant to last forever and it’s okay when a sibling disappears forever. Why is it okay for friends to go?

Every time I see something cool my first thought STILL is ‘I can’t wait to show this to him’ and then I get the sinking feeling of dread knowing he’s gone.

I just don’t feel like I deserve new friends either. He resented me so much that he didn’t even say goodbye. What’s the point in trying if I don’t deserve to?

I just feel really sad now all of the time. I didn’t get out of bed today until 2pm because I just didn’t want to. I don’t want to do anything because I can’t show my best friend.

It’s been one whole year now and it still feels raw. My therapist told me that it’s okay to grieve but this doesn’t feel okay. It’s ruining my whole life!

I’ve been told I need to move on. I would love to move on and I’ve been trying but the more I force it the worse I feel. I’m going to uni in a few months after working for a year and a bit and I’m not even excited.

Is there anything I can do to make the pain go away? I either feel really guilty and like I’m a monster or I just feel depressed because I miss my friend.

Mental Health My life feels over

Upvotes

I just got rejected after a job interview a week ago that I thought went well, and the reason it hurts so much is because this was my last chance to get a second job in time for me to able to pay my bills next month. I have enough for this months and that's it. My current job only gives me part time hours despite pleading with my manager and learning as much areas as I can in my job so they will schedule me more.

I have had a very depressing summer as since I've been living paycheck to paycheck, I have no money to do anything fun or worthwhile. My one friend I made online that I looked forward to talking to each day went inactive a month ago, so I have no friends to hang out with or talk to. All of my family members are not in my life for various legitimate reasons.

My life feels over at 24 years old. I have been so strong supporting myself since 18 and learning about the world through trial and error all by myself but I wish so badly I would have had someone to help me through it, to explain things to me, to be there for me when I was overwhelmed & frustrated & sad. There's still so much I don't know and can't know. I had debilitating OCD until a few months ago, thankfully it's not that bad now, but I went through so much suffering to get here. I'm shy and probably have autism, so that doesn't help my lack of social life and mistakes I get myself into.

I had an abusive neglectful childhood, and even in my young adulthood there were times I felt betrayed by people when I didn't deserve it, and so I'm left with this deep sense that no matter what I do, no matter how I treat people, that I'm just not worthy of love or protection or worth caring about.... That I'm destined to be a lone wolf struggling to survive all by myself til the very end.

I'm going to lose my apartment now, and I have nowhere to go. I have rodent pets that I refuse to separate with, as I don't trust people to take good care of them if I re-home them. Also, they are the only things in life that mean something to me. I'm really scared about what's gonna happen with them. They don't deserve to be taken away from their familiar comfort.

I just want to cry. I'm working so hard. I'm constantly trying to problem solve and fix my life, but I can't. I give up. Everything is overwhelming. I was never taught how to be independent growing up and I know it's counterintuitive but I don't want to ask for help anymore..... I feel embarrassed and like a failure and I'm tired of being reminded I can't just call my family for help like everyone else can.

I'm tired of being strong, and having no support system, and never having felt cared about in my entire life. The only person that's ever had my back was myself, and I feel I am slowly losing even that support due to my self worth deteriorating.

While I need solutions, I don't really want to hear them. I simply need some emotional support to get me through today. I'm crying right now typing this. I just want a break. Every month is harder than the next. I can't take it anymore.

Mental Health Nervous about therapy

Hi! I made a post on this sub about therapy a while ago. I'm glad to say I have an appointment for my first session in 3 days!!! Just took getting my mom's ex involved for her to finally set one up haha

I am rather nervous about how it's going to go, though. My mom has a history of sabotaging literally anything related to my mental health for seemingly no real reason (as you'd guess it was an uphill battle to get her to agree to this in the first place because she straight-up doesn't know how therapy works and refuses to listen when corrected or anything because she seems to think she knows better than everyone around her), and I'm going to do these sessions online, so I'm not sure how much control she's going to try and take during them. I'm also unsure if she's going to try and cut things short after the first session. This therapist is on her insurance so I really hope not, but it's sadly still a possibility.

She also made a point that she'd refuse if the therapist said I'd benefit from being put on medication or anything of the like, and that makes me even more nervous since I've been doing research and I suspect that I may have something wrong with me that would need medication. I don't know how that will go either.

I'm not sure what exactly I'm here for myself, I guess I just want someone to be nice to me while I go through this. I hope things will get better for me.

Family I am suffocating fuck

Upvotes

Dude I just feel so guilty and ruminate all the time. I literally depend on Reddit, google, and chat for reassurance. I just feel guilty all the time. Like I’m a bad person. Like I deserve to be abandoned.

My parents are wealthy and they are renting out a house a few hours away and they make me feel bad when I don’t want to go… but why would I when all you do is drink and yell at me there? I decided I’m going a day late so I can do something for myself tomorrow and my mom has been making me feel guilty all day. My brothers never deal with this.

Seeking Parental Validation No support system

I've been thinking a lot about how different life feels when you don't really have anyone.

I don't have family. I don't really have friends. The only person I regularly communicate with is my ex because we share a son.

My son has a violent criminal record, and because of that, a judge ordered that he isn't allowed to be where I am. That wasn't something I asked for, but it's the reality I'm living with.

So it's just me and my dogs.

I'm so tired. I wish I had someone to remind me that I'm not completely alone.

Jobs & Careers Advice about my job I don't like

Upvotes

Hi! I recently graduated college, and have been working at what I thought was my dream job for about 6 months.

But I quickly figured out a couple major problems: There is no work to do- if I went missing for a week, actual work would be unaffected, though my presence would be missed. With that spare time, if I try to make improvements to workflow or customer experience, I am shot down. Suggestions are taken as hits to ego, since I am essentially critiquing the status quo set up by management. Third, communication is really poor. Besides the ego, expectations from management are random and unclear. I am expected to pay attention while my manager is talking, even if they are speaking aloud to figure out a problem. If I make a suggestion while they are talking at me, I am shot down, reprimanded in private, or told to worry less.

I was a summa cum laude graduate! I was so excited when I started, but it feels like a bait and switch! Much of what I heard at the interview directly from higherups turned out to be false.

I am really struggling in my day to day at work. My manager can tell I have lost passion for the job, and I am receiving more critiques (again, despite having almost no work to do). I would appreciate any advice on keeping my good standing at work, keeping my spirits up, and the transition to a new job.

Mental Health I reached out and found no one

Upvotes

Last night was hard. Something triggered memories and feelings in me. I dont have many from when I was a kid, even now I don't really process memories. My previous therapist said I've gone through traumatic events where my brain is sheltering it from me, based on the little bit I do kinda remember. I don't have a therapist anymore (can't afford it). But last night was hard. I reached out to someone i kinda thought was a friend... I've slowly been opening up to her (like how I don't have memories bc of my past) and you know how people say "if you need anything..." so I reached out, said I was remembering stuff, but would be okay and we should get together soon- not to talk about me/ this but to get me outta my head, and invited her to dinner. Nothing. No response in over 16 hrs. It says she opened the message, and maybe she didn't read it or doesnt know how to respond.. or maybe she's realizing I'm too much. Its not like we get together very often (maybe 2 or 3 times a year).

I just don't wanna feel alone and I'm even lonelier than before. I'm beginning to hate myself for reaching out, like this is a proven fact on why I shouldn't reach out/ why I don't have friends, why I'm essentially not important enough. If I wouldve kept my mouth shut, I could've just ignored all this, kept it buried.

I have to work up the nerve to call my real mom to find out the timeline of my life. When certain things happened. I already know she's gonna dismiss a lot of it (she was abusive and claims she wasn't. I was in foster care as a teenager and she claims I wasn't "really" in foster care) so I know her version wont be 100% but if i just focus on facts with her, maybe it'll help me..? But I know some things (like being hit by a moving car), she'll laugh about and claim it never happened... and there's no way to verify that even though i feel like i have that memory inside of me.

I'm scared to find out about my past. I'm scared for it to consume me.

Relationships & Dating I need some advice will she be back? I actually feel worthless

Here is my story: M(27) F(27)

I matched with a girl on Hinge early September last year hit things off immediately, texting every day I was like wow this is incredible - My birthday a week later in September took me to a new cinema and got me my favourite aftershave, paid for everything - I laughed and said are you love bombing me to which she said no I was being nice for your bday.

-Months go by, nice getaways to hotels, training together, great sex and everything felt perfect she told me I was the best thing ever so grateful and lucky she ended up with someone like me, she had a young son who was 9 and I did not meet in person - she said her ex bf who was practically the step dad of the kid left her 2 years ago and put her kid in therapy and she done some as well, in which she tells me all the things she wants in an ideal partner and I tick every box, I felt like this girl really understood me and I had met my person.

Now this is where the cracks start, she would mention how evil and hateful her ex (Together 6 years) was and mentioned he was in the same Tesco as her at xmas (live in local area) He was walking in and she was walking out - I said that's trippy never easy bumping into an ex - left it at that. Did not want to appear phased. Had a nice xmas met her Mum and her little sister things felt very good and often stayed with her and her mum when her son was at the kids dads. She also told me things like she was with someone and she was and they got back together after a year and she said things to him like go out and cheat if it makes you feel better because she was with someone else.

At end of February my Granny passed away unexpectedly - She mentioned how her ex BF did not let her into the after event when his granny passed away etc I just let her vent and was always understanding of what her ex put her through Granny passed away on Tuesday and then on Friday I met her Dad for the first time - Naturally stressed over my Grannys passing I did not drink - she did and was drunk off prosecco- On the trip down and home she basically played a FU to her ex song - and her dad mentioned she seen her ex and he looked rough - anyways, we drove home and I said to her this ex really hurt you and your son and hes like a ball and chain on your leg, he is in the past and if he was so bad he left you and your son in therapy be happy he's gone - she said she's 'over him just not the situation she put her and her son through' - when I said I wasn't happy she's mentioning him the week I am grieving the death of my grandparent she stone walled me - I left her house and drove home to regulate as I was with a previous GF who stonewalled me and it done a number on me and she was aware of this and also the heard week I had - she was drunk and proceeded to tell me I was never meeting her child and that was us done over text, I felt this was manipulative- We then sorted this out - half apology from her and from me I thought I needed to be more understanding of her situation and we told each other we love each other. But, I felt maybe selfishly she should have been understanding my Granny passed away that week and I wasn't in a headspace to listen about her ex who was so bad?

- The month after we had a great month done a charity 10K and had a nice getaway - I spoke to her son on the phone and on FaceTime over those few months we were together over xmas and when she was on a family holiday to New York - still no physical interaction I said it would be nice to meet your child as I have gotten him a birthday present and an Xmas one and we both know about each other and I am getting a bit frustrated of having to hide around the corner when we know about each other - Bare in mind I asked this respectfully and said no pressure I just need a plan as she said if I met him I could travel to Spain with her and her kid this summer and her graduation was coming up soon. The kid also told his biological father about me that Saturday as well - I did not mind as obv was in everyone's best interests I treated his son with respect and care

I was met with two days of silence - then seen her on the Saturday went to the gym all was fine, thought that was back on track and we said we would go to the cinema on the Wednesday and on the Tuesday I got a text telling me I was perfect, we have a laugh together but she feels 'something is missing' - and ended things with me over text after 7 months.

I did not reply for 3 weeks my family and friends told me not to and I deserved more than a break up text as I was blindsided and was constantly told I was the best person in the world and she was so lucky to have me, but when I mentioned maybe meeting her kid she turned so nasty and discarded me like I was nothing over text, when I did then text her to speak she then told me 'she loves me as a person but not in love with me' and I deserve better - I did not reply again, I was in such shock I feel so heartbroken how can she be all lovey then discarded over text? I noticed when I put her number into whatsapp she had no profile picture anymore and her messages were set to disappearing which makes me think her ex was back in the picture or hiding something? - Her tiktok reposts after were all things like when a man leaves your life build a comfortable life etc - except I never left her?

I have never been this hurt and blindsided before in my life, I wasnt even worth a conversation just felt so easily disposed when we had concerts etc to look forward to this summer and all I was worth was a text.

What do I do I am still incredibly in love with her - Its been 3 months nc and I have been attending therapy and gym but I still feel stuck

Family No idea what to do. College dropout.

Hi, I apologize if this post is disorganized. I am 20 years old, and if you saw me, you'd think I was a male.

I live about 2 hours away from my parents hometown in a college town. I have 2.5 weeks till my student housing lease ends at my college. I've already cancelled my classes and housing. I have a job as a temp at an amazon warehouse. I have 1k saved, and 600 coming each week. It's a straight shot to the warehouse on the sidewalk, but likely an 45 minutes each way on bike.

I found an apartment nearby that is $625/month, with utilities included (it's primarily student housing, but they let non-students in as well.) They said they have a unit available august 14th, but I would essentially need to stay in a hotel for a week before I could move in. When I was at home, they forced me to work at the family business for $65 / week as an adult.

They also refused to let me learn how to get a job, or other adult affairs. I would say it's intentional.

I commute to work with my parents car, that they let me take off to college. They pay for the insurance, etc.

I mildly floated the idea about getting my own apartment last month, and they freaked out, yelled at me for 45 minutes, and said that I would never get an opportunity to go to college ever again. They wouldn't hear my case at all.

I'm also transgender, which makes things even more complicated because moving home would mean quitting HRT and letting my body's' natural hormones slowly masculinize me. Additionally, before I went off to college as an adult, my father regularly threatened to seriously hurt me if I was gay or transgender.

My brother may be willing to let me stay with him, but I would still need to detransition, and there's no telling if anyone would even let me get a job, etc.

No idea what to do. Feel pretty fucked over by life in general. I tried to get a job at the beginning of this summer while I was still in housing, but because the job market is so rough, it took me like 2/3rd of the summer to actually find it.

I could go to a homeless shelter, but I don't know how that would work, or if I'd have to de-transition.

Family Real mom feels so different now. Is there a chance for her to change back to what she used to be with me?

I'm 22F, yes laugh and ridicule me for being such a baby. It just feels like a hit to the stomach when my mom suddenly made me realize I'm not her entire world anymore. Her reasoning is "You're an adult now, you shouldn't even care about what my new life is!" i get that, but is it my fault you and I used to be so close? Especially now after you've gotten therapy, I thought you and I would finally make up for the hardships. But instead, you decided to enjoy life without me anymore. :( I miss you mom. Cuz right now, you feel more of a best friend that's starting to hang out with other people and leaving me be.

Mental Health I've lost so much this year..

I've lost so much this year.

I honestly don’t even know how to begin writing this because every time I try to explain what has happened to me this year, it sounds almost ridiculous, like too many awful things compressed into such a short amount of time, and I don’t think I have properly processed any of it because something else keeps happening before I can even grieve the last thing. Earlier this year I lost my Google account, and when I say I lost my Google account, I don’t mean I simply lost an email address or had to create a new login. I lost almost my entire digital life from when I was in Year 7 until now. Years and years of photos, videos, emails, documents, schoolwork, notes, saved places, conversations, searches, playlists, memories, random screenshots, old friendships, old relationships, family moments, travels and different versions of myself that I had kept without even realising how important they would eventually become to me. There were things in there from when I was twelve or thirteen years old. Things I probably had not opened in years, but I always believed they were there and that one day, when I was older, I could go back and look through everything and remember who I was. I have always been extremely sentimental. I save everything. I collect, curate and organise my memories because I am terrified of forgetting. I am terrified that one day I will forget someone’s face, the way a certain year felt, the places I went, the people I loved, or the person I used to be. Maybe other people can lose photographs and tell themselves that the experience still happened and that should be enough, but my brain does not work like that.

To me, those files were proof that my life happened. They were pieces of myself that I had quietly carried for most of my life. Losing that account felt like someone deleted my childhood and adolescence without asking me, and I was already so deeply upset about it, but I was trying to be rational and tell myself that I had to accept it because there was apparently nothing else I could do. Then my mum lost my bag with around $10,000 worth of belongings inside it. Obviously the money and the value of everything mattered, and I am not going to pretend that it didn’t, because $10,000 is not a small amount of money, but it was also another collection of personal things disappearing from my life all at once. It was the shock, the frustration, the feeling of complete helplessness and the anger of knowing that something important was gone and that no amount of panicking, crying or replaying the situation in my head would bring it back. I think something inside me started to shut down after that, but I kept functioning because that is what I always do. I can be completely falling apart internally and still speak normally, travel, work, answer messages, organise things and act as though everything is fine. I have spent so much of my life masking what I feel that I don’t think people understand how bad I am doing unless I explicitly tell them, and even when I tell them, I still feel like they only understand a fraction of it. And then now my phone has been stolen. My actual phone is replaceable. I understand that. I eventually bought another phone, I can reinstall applications and I can slowly rebuild the practical parts of it, but the phone contained around 300,000 photographs and files. Three hundred thousand. I still cannot properly comprehend that number or accept that those things might actually be gone. It contained years of my life, ordinary days that I would otherwise forget, important moments, people I may never see again, places I may never return to, photographs I had been meaning to sort through, documents I thought I would always have, screenshots of conversations, stupid little things that would mean absolutely nothing to anyone else but mattered to me because they were mine.

I know people might think that nobody needs that many photos or that I should have backed everything up better, and believe me, I have already punished myself with every possible version of that thought. I keep thinking about what I should have done differently. I should have backed it up. I should have organised it sooner. I should have been more careful. I should not have carried it there. I should have noticed something. I should have prevented it. I keep looking for the exact moment where I could have changed the ending, even though logically I know that someone stealing from me was not something I chose and that blaming myself will not restore a single file. But emotionally, I cannot stop. The Google account was already an enormous loss. The bag was another enormous loss. Now the phone has taken whatever emotional capacity I had left, and I genuinely feel empty. Not peaceful empty. Not detached in a healthy way. I mean the kind of emptiness where I feel like I have been crying internally for so long that my brain has gone quiet because it cannot keep producing the same level of pain. Sometimes I feel overwhelmingly sad and panicked, and other times I feel absolutely nothing, and the nothing almost scares me more because I know how much grief is sitting underneath it.

I feel as though my life keeps being erased in sections. Every time I try to hold onto something, it disappears. Every time I tell myself that I still have the rest, another part of the rest is taken away. It has made me feel like nothing is secure, nothing is permanent and nothing I love is safe just because I have been careful with it for years. I know memories are technically inside us and not inside devices, but I also know how human memory works. We forget. Faces blur. Dates disappear. Entire periods of our lives become a vague feeling instead of something we can actually return to. Photographs helped me remember details that my mind could not hold forever. They helped me return to people and places that no longer exist in the same way. They allowed me to see who I was before life changed me. Now I keep thinking about my future self wanting to look back at this part of my life and finding nothing there. The experiences happened, but the doors back into them have been closed, and I think that is what is destroying me. I am not only grieving photos, files, belongings or a phone. I am grieving access to my own past. I am grieving the younger versions of myself that I thought I had safely preserved. I am grieving memories I had not even had the chance to revisit yet. I am grieving the belief that if I carefully saved everything, I would never completely lose it. I feel angry at the thief. I feel angry about my Google account. I feel angry at my mum even though I know she did not deliberately lose my bag. I feel angry at myself even though I know I did not deliberately lose any of this. I feel angry at the entire year for taking so much from me and then continuing as though nothing happened.

The world does not stop because your personal world has collapsed. People still message you, plans still exist, work still needs to be done, and you are somehow expected to keep moving while carrying a grief that nobody else can see. I am so tired of being resilient. I am tired of immediately having to think about solutions, replacements, account recovery, police reports, SIM cards, passwords, insurance and what I need to buy again. I don’t want another practical solution right now. I want my things back. I want my photos back. I want the life I spent years documenting back. I want to stop being told, directly or indirectly, that these are only material things or only data, because they were not “only” anything to me. They were parts of my life. They mattered because I decided they mattered. Maybe this sounds dramatic to people who are not attached to memories in the same way, but I genuinely feel like something inside me has broken.

I am so depressed and so sad, but more than anything I feel lost. I don’t know how to rebuild an archive that took more than half of my life to create, and I don’t know how to accept that some parts of it may never be recovered. I am trying to tell myself that I am still here, that I am not made entirely from the things I saved, and that losing the record of my life does not mean my life did not happen. I know all of those things intellectually. I can explain them perfectly and rationally, but emotionally they are not reaching me yet. Right now I just feel like I have lost too much, too many times, too close together, and I do not have enough left in me to pretend that I am coping well. I think I am writing this because I need to say it somewhere honestly: I am not okay. I am grieving. I am exhausted. I feel completely hollow, and I miss things that I did not even know I would have to say goodbye to.

I don't know what to say or do. How can I rationalise all of this and feel better?

Family I wish I was able to talk to my parents about relationships and my love life

My parents have never liked the idea of my sister or me dating. Growing up, my parents always emphasized that I don’t need anyone and that I should always rely on myself. That isn’t bad advice at all, but I feel like I was sheltered when it came to relationships. My sister started dating in college, and my parents hate her boyfriend, even though they haven’t given a reason for why they dislike him. They’ve been dating for five years, and my sister is 27. When it comes to me, though, they’ve been much stricter about dating. I ended up dating one person in high school for over a year, but we broke up during my senior year. Because of that, my parents have been telling me that they don’t want me dating at all in college, and that there will be consequences if they find out I’m dating anyone.
For some context, I’m an 18-year-old guy who just graduated high school, and I’m enrolled in community college so I can eventually transfer to a university. They claim they want to protect me from getting my heart broken, which is a sweet thought, but it’s also extremely annoying. They don’t like the idea of me having a crush on someone or someone having a crush on me.
Recently, I went to Disney with my cousin, Tia, my sister, and my mom. I noticed that my cousin was so comfortable telling her mom (my Tia) about casual relationships she’s had in college and things she was upset about. It made me realize that I never had that type of relationship with my mom or dad. I don’t really know how to talk to them about this because I feel like I’m just going to get shut down, like I always do.

Seeking Parental Validation mom, dad, the concert I want to go to is too expensive for my parents :(

call me spoiled all you want, but I really wanted to get this out. I am a huge fan of Christian artist Forrest Frank. I know the lyrics to every song on Child of God II and I and really enjoy the talent he has for music and praising the Lord. he's coming to a city near me pretty soon, but the tickets for two people (that was assuming my sister goes with me since she also likes Forrest) are $250+ each now. unfortunately she has a wedding to attend that day. I can't go by myself, but even if I did, the tickets are $150+ for just one person and my family said that was too expensive and told me to choose between that and a family vacation for this year. I want the vacation because they deserve to relax and rest but the only spot we can afford right now is just full of historical sights and almost no restaurants. but I'll take that over being stuck inside and being all pale for the entire summer. i just really want this summer to be memorable since I had such a tough school year. everyone I know travelled, went to concerts, and went to world cup matches. my sister went to one near us for over $500 and now she's saying Forrest is too expensive (which understandable cause he'll be back but how many times is our home country gonna play near us in the WC). i just really wish I could go since I've done nothing this summer but I don't want it to be a financial burden to my parents not to mention the logistics are not in my favour since I can't even go alone. how do I stop whining about this when clearly it isn't gonna work out?

also I don't work because my academics are already challenging as is and jobs for my age are kinda limited so I'm waiting until next summer to work

Ask Mom & Dad Methods for self control?

I am very impulsive, but not very productive.
I’m medicated for ADHD, which is great, and it essentially eliminates my executive dysfunction, which is what makes me impulsive.
The problem I’m having is directing it.
I find myself preferring to be productive on video games and such while on my meds, rather than cleaning and being responsible.
I’ve tried telling myself “in an hour” or “at <time>” I’ll get up and be productive around the house but I end up getting lost in what I’m doing because I focused on the wrong thing, and as much as my meds help, I still struggle with time blindness.

Another thing I struggle with, is being productive around the house outside of my days off. I can’t necessarily only clean once or twice a week. But I also never feel like cleaning when I come home from work, especially with the summer heat, I feel like I waste all of my productive energy at work, except it’s also slow season at the car wash so I’m not even doing anything. I sit inside a booth all day and scroll on my phone, Reddit, TikTok, text my friends on Discord, and once in a while greet a car (that usually doesn’t even need my help anyways.) the cleaning once or twice a week when I get a day off also doesn’t maintain very well. Especially not with two people who were never taught proper house-cleaning discipline. I was raised by hoarders and my spouse wasn’t allowed out of his room, even if he was cleaning up. On top of that, our house already has a few hoarded piles of stuff that we don’t ever use or need, and it’s overwhelming for me to clean, I hardly know where to start, but I don’t want to be stuck in that. I’m also not asking for house-cleaning advice since there’s a whole other sub for that, I’m mainly asking for tips, hacks, advice, methods, etc… that you would recommend I try in order to overcome these issues.

Jobs & Careers My dreams are crushed.

My whole life I have had a passion for art.I loved games and movies allot also,I remember being really young trying to redraw frame by frame scenes of simba and asking my mom to send characters I drew to blizzard (I played allot of WC3) so they can put them in the game. When Wolfenstein the new order came out and I watched my dad play it I loved everything about it so much that it drove me to want to make my own cool things in blender.Since I was young I loved and gained interest in this over time, but last year after recovering from depression This spark for 3d came back and I want to go to college for it to hopefully get into helping make games and movies, these colleges are far and expensive unfortunately so my Dad said he dosnt think it's the path for me,instead of listening I had the silly idea that maybe if I make such a stunning portfolio they would have to like give me a scholarship or something.Today my dad told me to uninstall blender and krita and never think about it again. This is all I ever wanted to do with my life and I simply don't know where to go from here almost graduation from highschool.

Friendship and Social Life Seeking support/second thoughts about communication issues

I've been struggling to open up to my friends about my concerns with our relationship as well as apologize for the way I've been behaving up until this point.

Since early June, I've spent time preparing for these conversations but struggled to work on them consistently because of the fear of facing my feelings including the guilt I felt for my behavior in the relationships and the fear of what they might think of me from here on out.

I'll briefly go through both situations:

Me and my friend, Dean, started talking at the beginning of last school year. Throughout that year, I noticed some things about his behavior that bothered me, including the people he talked to. They tended to gossip and all that junk, and he involved himself in it a lot of the time. I also noticed that he has an avoidant personality like me, including avoiding communicating with people about his need for a better connection or to resolve some conflict out of fear of how it might go. He also has a phone addiction and tends to steer toward it whenever he has the chance.

I will say though, his home life isn't great, so I feel like he lacks the opportunity to do good for himself at times, but there are some things, including his relationships and how he spends his free time, that I think he has control over but continues to make those decisions regsrdless. He's stated before how he wants to do better in school, in his relationships, in his sleep, but continues to do the things he's always done, and I feel frustrated by it.

Now, I will say that I mirror his situation in a lot of ways, including the avoidance tactics, the unfulfilled promises, the toxic friendships, and all that, and I think that's partially why I'm so frustrated by it, but I can say that I've been trying to improve myself this entire year by doing things like meditation, journaling, and trying different procrastination techniques, and I'm trying to amend my mistakes and let go of this shitty version of me by reaching out and getting the feedback and/or support I feel like I need to improve my relationships, but I don't see him putting in that kind of effort now and I don't worry that it won't be any time soon. I also worry that, even if he has started to put in effort, would I be holding myself back? Would we be at different stages of the growing process? Most likely. Should I give it time? I don't know. I need to be able to support people I call friends, especially people I relate to in a lot of ways, but I'm having a hard time looking at it from that angle. I think that part just comes with having the conversation.

For one, I wanted to get other people's thoughts/support on this situation before I said anything because I feel incredibly lonely. I haven't talked to any of my friends, including the ones I've met in early June, because of how much this has been weighing on me, and I feel like I need to know that someone else understands and can give me advice or an encouragement to keep moving forward.

I will go into the other friendship tomorrow, but I just wanted to get this out there now because I've already been delaying it for a long time. That's all for now.

I know like my dad will be okay about it but some others like my uncle and grandparents probably wont be so happy and idk about the others. Im scared as fuck to do this. I know our relationship will fracture because of this. But i need to do this. Any advice or words of comfort? Please I just need something that wont make me feel like im dying.

Safety at Home Dumb Question..

My shed only has one door.

The door is somehow blocked by a folding, circular table.

Literally no way to collapse the table or open the door.

Any ideas, or am I locked out of my shed forever?

Health & Medical Questions How do I find a doctor and schedule a doctor's appointment?

I've been having health issues for quite some time and I was told I should schedule an appointment with an allergist, but I don't know how to do it at all. I'm really sorry to post this but I don't even know where to start. I looked up allergists and I don't know what to do. I have several allergy and inflammatory conditions and a lot of people suspect there's something more going on but how do I even say that? And how do I pick the right doctor? A lot of doctors said I was making stuff up before, so can I find one who doesn't do that? I called insurance to see where they covered hours ago and they never replied. Should I call the doctor directly? What should I expect? Can I get all the testing done in one day? What testing will I even need? Please someone help me 😭
