In Delta Force I loved being called a camper with my sniper rifle. I'd then run into the main fight and continue to win either shooting arms length with the rifle or switching to knife kills. It pissed them off even more.

Can I ask without being destroyed what is the reason? I know nothing about guns but I don't think the chances of hitting on target, when there are 99,999 non-tatgets running around, have to be pretty low.
Then... Ok give me more than 1 but don't put them 5m away from each other? ( If you tell me there was 1 every 5m, all around the stadium I'll shut up. Excessive, but I'll shut up)
Edit: Reasoning, not reason. What is the train of thought to put a sniper in a soccer match.

Counter terrorism. There are multiple snipers throughout the stadium providing complete coverage of the whole crowed
If someone comes into the stadium to shoot it up, sure, the snipers might accidentally hit someone trying to stop them, but it's still better than giving them free rein at thousands of unarmed civilians.
Additionally, actually firing is a last resort. Most of their work is more mundane like tracking criminals in the crowd, so on the ground law enforcement can find and arrest them.
This isn't a US only thing. Many European stadiums do this as well, especially after the Munich Olympics and the Bataclan Massacre

That was my thinking. It makes sense that in case they can work, they are there but they are also providing visual information, which might be better than a camera. But in the other hand you might have a lot armed police close by. If things happened, between they are sure they can shot and have confirmation, I imagine they guy would be surrounded.
What threw me off was the rifles so close together. I could see 50-100 snipers all around the roof and looked excessive. Like I said, I know nothing about weapons and how they are used in civilian areas

Snipers work in groups of 2. One “spotter” to assist with identifying threats and targets and one “shooter” to take the shot. Both have a gun in case the shooter is hit, the spotter can take over.
Also, I don’t see 50-100 snipers. I can only see the 2. It’s likely that there is about 4 teams of 2 spread out so they can cover each others blind spots

Snipers don’t usually work alone. They usually have a spotter or a second shooter, for a situational awareness.
There may be other teams at other points around the stadium. I wasn’t there.
Even if they don’t have a good shot, they can still have a good observation position. Think of it like putting a couple people with binoculars up there and then at the same time you think, let’s give them guns because then if they do get a shot they can take it.
It’s true that if there’s a bunch of people running around, it’s not easy to get a good shot. But on the other hand, sniping is one of those things where sometimes the reality out matches Hollywood. Against a stationary exposed to target there’s nowhere in a stadium that would be outside the range of a head shot.
I had a bare minimum you’re going to want to have somebody up there who can make sure there’s no snipers in the good sniper spots. Right? You don’t want to give that area over to the bad guys. You want to actively occupy those spaces. If you don’t have enough people to literally occupy all the spaces, you want to be able to at least see as many of the spaces as you can. And if you can see those bases, but not reach them quickly, you want to be able to reach out and touch somebody in those spaces. So one of the primary jobs of snipers and a big spread out of it like this, is in the rare case that somebody was able to smuggle in a long arm and take up a position, to be able to take them out quickly.
Sometimes things are dumb. But quite often they are just something where other people have spent a lot of time thinking it through and it looks dumb because we haven’t done that work.

Sure, I thought about it, but I guess I'm not a professional and was thinking about the chaos. It does make sense when you provide the analysis. But the moment I saw them as information providers makes much more sense.
As you said. Movies are mostly military and news only show a few seconds so it's hard to get what they are actually doing there. Thanks for all the details 😀

There are snipers at every NFL game, and large football games in EU. Some EU arenas have dedicated sniper nests.
German snipers almost shot an activist at UEFA Euro 2020 between France and Germany.
America is a strange country, but not for this reason. This is normal practice for very large events.

Ya this. A local festival near where I live that shuts down a main street also had snipers. You never know if someone has a gun or is going try to drive through the crowd so in a weird way it feels more safe.

The first contemporary counterterrorism team to be stood up was a direct result of the 1972 Munich Massacre. The truly atrocious response to the hostage crisis, which included but was not limited to, an entire team of German police officers abandoning their posts, an initial breach attempt being broadcast live, the abysmal excuse for police snipers inadvertently shooting each other, all hostages dead, and the three surviving Black September members spending only a month incarcerated before being released, lead directly to GSG 9 being created. Counterterrorism capabilities and the specter of terrorism have been a reality in European policing and military for longer than it has been in the United States.
The US would start playing catch up in the 1980s, but that was a response to the disaster that was Eagle Claw. It was an international focus, and not a domestic one. Local law enforcement agencies in the United States largely only started taking the possibility of counterterrorism response seriously post 9/11, and even then it took until about 2008 with the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai for many to really realize that this is something that they need to have a capability for. Rapid response is critical.

I was a producer during Queen Elizabeth II's first live internet broadcast for the BBC during an inauguration, and I had a sniper in the booth with me, and they were all over the roof's of every building along the street as well. Of course normal procedure, but only time I have experienced it. Was cramped.
