I just realized that the way the three girls participate in the tap dance class in TOW the Fake Monica is basically how their characters are dealing with life itself during the show. It's a brilliant character-portrayal in one small scene.
"I am not getting it'. Monica is struggling. She wants to do it perfectly, she wants to do it the best, but at the first struggle she is filled with feelings of incompetence, feeling she is totally uncoordinated, she feels she is the worst. She tenses up, and the reason she does not succeed is EXACTLY because she wants it too hard. Which is heartbreaking and totally Monica.
"I totally get it" Phoebe thinks she gets it totally. Which is kinda true - apart from the fact that she does something totally different than everyone else. She is completely herself, in her own world and she does it with joy and confidence. Which is totally beautiful and totally Phoebe.
"Just click when they click!" Rachel comes in, effortlessly doing exactly what she supposed to do in sync with everyone around her, and seems surprised that Monica struggles. But not because she is so good at dancing. She is good at social adaptation, doing what others are doing, without overthinking why she does what she does.
And their stories over the 10 years? For Monica, learning to loosen up, finding joy in the action itself and that showing up sometimes enough. Learning from Phoebe the joy of being herself and from Rachel that she can be more relaxed and just do the thing. (She already starts this at the end of this episode).
For Phoebe, to remain herself, but sometimes to bring her world closer to the real world.
And for Rachel, to find her own rythm, her own path, her own dance, and not just to "click when others click", but work hard for things like Monica and and be herself with confidence like Phoebe.
