visiting for 4 days in mid september! planning to see/hike around Mt. Hood but would love some local recs! coffee shops, running routes, book stores. anything that you think is a should not miss!

I'm coming to Hood River for the first time this August, hoping to get some time on the water!

I'm wondering if I could make a friend and rent some gear from someone for a few days on the cheap. I know there are a couple businesses that offer rentals but I thought I'd drop a line here. I've never been to Hood River so I'm open to suggestions!

What I have in my head is like, I offer $150 to rent your older rig that's collecting dust in a garage somewhere. The rental places are looking like $150/day, so I don't want to do that

ideally I could find like 90-110 liters of dated/beat up freeride board, and maybe like a 4.2 sail

I've been windsurfing about 4 years in and around the SF bay area. Comfortable with water starts and I can get something like a decent carve gybe on a slalom board

Let me know your thoughts?

Hey everyone! I recently became a full-time Hood River resident and am looking for weekly running groups — road or trail.

I’ve heard of a couple already, but I wanted to cast a wider net and see what else is out there.

A little about me: I’m in my early 30s and was a member of a running club in Portland. I’m used to running 40–70 miles per week and have experience with both road and trail marathons.

Hi! I'm going to be biking the Oregon Timbers Trail soon, which ends in Hood River. My truck will be in southern Oregon.. so I'm looking for ideas on campsites or hotels that might be available for last minute booking so I can collect myself and figure out how to get to Portland or Vancouver for an Amtrack back down south.

Some questions:
- Do you think I'll be able to find a campsite or hotel room last minute in Hood River?
- Are there places I can park long term in Hood River? In that case, I could drop my bike in Southern Oregon, drive my truck up north, and then travel without baggage back down to my bike to start the trail...
- Has anyone biked from Hood River to Portland/Vancouver? Curious about how pleasant that is, or if I should plan on finding a ride.

Hi there. I live in a small town in AZ, same town I was born and raised in. Our school systems continue to get worse and worse and have now moved to 4 days a week due and most of our neighbors have moved and those homes have turned into Airbnbs and I’ve realized sadly I don’t think I want to raise my kids here.

We’ve been visiting Hood River 1-2 times a year for the past eight years and love it. We spent a month in the area after our wedding as well and just realized how much we feel at home in the area. We are avid hikers, love paddling, my husband loves snow sports and we just love being outside and Gifford Pinchot is our favorite national forest.

We plan to have kids in the next 1-3 years and are strongly considering moving to Hood River. Wondering what the community is like for families. Also wondering what it’s like just for young professionals. We don’t like to drink or go out, prefer early mornings to get outside on the trails on the weekend. Would love to raise kids somewhere where we can coach little league and get involved in local nonprofits (we both volunteer with our local trail orgs here in AZ). Just wanting to know how the sense of community is.

We don’t want to move to a city. We know the struggles sometimes of living in a small town (we drive 100 miles to Phoenix for healthcare currently). So we know and understand that. Just trying to find a small town in an environment we love that can also be great for community and raising kids.

On Saturday, June 27, the public is invited to discover how communities can stay connected during emergencies while enjoying a fun day of family activities at the annual Field Day event hosted by the Radio Amateurs of the Gorge (RAGs), in partnership with West Side Fire District.

Admission is free and visitors of all ages are welcome.

The event will run for 24 hours starting from 11 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday in the training area behind the West Side Fire Station, 4250 Barrett Drive in Hood River. The public is invited from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday.

I inherited a photo album and I’m trying to figure out how this photo of a service station relates to my ancestors. The photo appears on the first page of the album, which makes me think the subject had some significance to the person who created it.

What I do know is the photo was taken in the community of Latourell, Oregon.

However, the station in my photo does not appear to match known photos of the Latourell & Son filling station, which was operated by the Latourell family (no known relation to my family).

I’m not sure where to start researching something like this. Does anyone know how to find records of who owned or operated small rural service stations in Oregon in the early 1900s?
