Hi, I’m needing to order a stone for my uncle’s unveiling. He wanted his footstone to match that of his mother. Could someone tell me what the second line in Hebrew says? I remember enough to sound out that the first line is my grandmother’s name. I’m guessing that the second line is a translation of “beloved wife, mother, and grandmother”, but that’s just a guess. From what I understand, it's harder to speak/write modern Hebrew if you only understand Biblical Hebrew, but does it work in reverse? Could I understand Biblical Hebrew from only learning Modern Hebrew?

For example, requirements for a rabbinical school I know of requires two years of Modern Hebrew, but not Biblical Hebrew. But I could imagine that the difference in vocabulary and grammar would benefit from learning Biblical Hebrew, if you wanted to really study Biblical Hebrew texts, no? Thanks!

What are some vocabulary differences between the Modern Hebrew and Biblical Hebrew?

I am curious about the term "tree of knowledge of good and evil" in genesis. It strikes me as probably not capturing the original meaning in its entirety.

Would be very curious to hear other possible translations from anyone literate in ancient hebrew/greek or even aramaic or obscure semitic languages haha on the slightest chance you heroes are out there!

I was hoping someone would be able to help me with the Hebrew spelling of my families last name, as I’m looking into getting it tattooed (I know, I know!)

Our family name was Kantor/Cantor, but all the Hebrew spellings I can find simply translate it to chazzan, which obviously makes sense but is not what I am looking for. I am looking for a direct Hebrew translation of the name, not the profession.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as all the Hebrew I learned flew out the window immediately following my bat mitzvah.

A year and a half ago I became a father and since day 1 I’ve been speaking Hebrew with my daughter. She is doing really well being bilingual, swapping between Hebrew and Norwegian on a very high level (already counts to 10 in both languages etc)

Her Saba and I speak Hebrew while her mother speaks Norwegian, however she is trying to learn Hebrew so she can help double down on he basics at home.

Living in Norway, it is very difficult to get Hebrew resources, so I now have a reMarkable Paper Tablet so my partner can upload Hebrew worksheets and I have a Kindle e-reader so we can upload some Hebrew books.

My request is as follows:
1. Does anyone have any PDFs of worksheets / schoolbooks available for beginners they could share?

1. Does anyone know of any e-books for kids that would be easy to read? (My reading level is not that great) - so far I have been translating Norwegian books with AI having the phonetic Hebrew pronunciation.

2. Does anyone know of any good websites to purchase toddler toys in Hebrew? E.g a book with animals where she can press a button and it would say the animal and sound.
   I have heaps of them in Norwegian, non in Hebrew. We don’t have Amazon in Norway so I can’t order any from there 😔

Thanks for helping me keep Hebrew in the family. It’s very difficult in a country where only about 1000 people speak it..

I teach modern and biblical Hebrew, and the single most common place students get stuck isn't the alef-bet — it's the jump from textbook Hebrew to real Hebrew. You can technically read, but you open an actual article and drown. A few things that genuinely help:

1. Read slightly below your level, not at it. Reading should feel almost easy — that's how you build fluency and speed. Decoding every third word isn't reading, it's translating.

2. Use niqud as training wheels, then wean off. Read a text with vowels first, then re-read the same text without them. You already know it, so your brain learns to supply the vowels — which is the real skill.

3. Read things you actually care about. Motivation beats method. News, sports, gossip — whatever makes you want to finish the paragraph.

4. Stop looking up every word. Tolerate ambiguity and guess from context. Fluent reading means being comfortable not understanding 100%.

5. Frequency over intensity. Ten minutes twice a week beats two hours once a month. The plateau is broken by reps, not marathons.

What worked for the rest of you getting past this stage? Always curious what clicks for different learners.

I am about to become a first-time father. My wife and I are dual Israeli-Americans, with my wife also holding German citizenship. We plan on teaching our children German and potentially Yiddish, which we both have studied but are by no means fluent in. We live a mix of Reform and Conservative Jewish life—we are by no means conservative in the political sense.

While my wife is very literary, as the father, we decided a big part of my son's life will be education, both secular and theological. Because of that, I will speak Hebrew to our son and my wife English, even though we both speak it. I want to really engage with my son in reading skills and guiding his understanding of Judaism. That will be a big role for me, and I am planning on taking it very seriously.

As I will start with Hebrew and then shift to English once that becomes part of his schooling, I am wondering if anyone has any Hebrew resources for children.

A good colleague of mine took charge of reading with his daughter, and she, now 6, has an incredible reading level. I hope to apply some of his methods and what he did within a Hebrew-language setting.

If it matters, we plan to place our son in a Jewish private K-6 school that does some light Hebrew immersion. I know they do some light reading comprehension, and it does get more academic, but it is far more about speaking with songs and culture—which is fine; it makes sense for our community.

I've been wondering about the difference between these two alephs. At first I thought the tall one was just the initial form, but then there's an initial short aleph in the last line. Then I thought it could be a ligature of יא, but there's also יא next to eachother in one of the words. Help please 🥺

Does anyone know of a high quality frequency database for Hebrew words? Ideally, organized around base forms (e.g., infinitives for verbs, etc.) Based on a large corpus of modern texts, for example.

In German /w/ is [v], why not use /w/ to represent vav? The sound stays the same it just changes its latin representation.

You can say linsoa or nassa but what’s the difference. I think lalekh means traveling on foot exclusively so you wouldn’t use it if you’re in your mekhonit? Anyway I’ve been using Pimsleur on my phone, about 90 minutes a day and I’ve improved my Hebrew skills. Thanks

I have basically memorized the consonants using a children's book that relies heavily on mnemonics, but they don't cover the vowels nearly as well. Does anyone have any mnemonic devices for memorizing the Hebrew vowels?

When outside of Israel or talking to non-Israelis.

An example: Someone (an Israeli) accidentally said “hi” to someone before correcting oneself and saying “bye” (in language other than Hebrew). Is it possible that person was translating “shalom” (which means both “hi” and “bye”) at that particular moment? It also happened on Shabbat.

I’ve been learning Hebrew for a while, and I am at an early B1 level, but my issue is that I don’t really sound like a native speaker. I started reading the Hebrew grammar book by Lewis Glinert, and I am also using Anki cards, but I struggle with understanding idioms, sayings, and figures of speech.

Can you figure out what the first and last words might be? This is the only view I have of it. I think it's supposed to say "choose the right"
