General Haunting Ground HD Project

Hi everyone! I have been working secretly on an HD Project for Haunting Ground, it is a full remake of the game textures that respects the original environments and colors of the game, I have carefully remade every texture from scratch to respect the game and original ideas from the developers

The project has taken around 400-500 hours, this was possible by visiting different locations to take pictures of similar architecture, creating over more than 1000 textures and hundreds of hours editing the graphics into the game and making sure the colors are the same as the original

My goal was to remake everything at the highest quality possible, I have made a demo before but now the HD Project is complete, all you need is on my YouTube video I hope you enjoy my first full release!

after i achieved the worst possible ending in haunting ground, the final close up shot of fiona’s face reminded me of casca from berserk after she survived the eclipse

the vacant eyes paired with the checked-out smiles paint such a disturbing picture to me.. just seeing two brave women who fought their hardest for the sake of survival be reduced to mindless shells of their former selves, and mentally regress from the sheer trauma of being sexually assaulted is so tragic to me

I have been following that blog for over 10 years, but they haven't posted again for quite a while. Does anyone know if something happened to the blog owner?

Discussion RE9 and Haunting Ground

Post image

When the demo for RE9 was shown, I really thought Grace's gameplay would be similar to this game. They showed us Grace tripping when running away and panicking like Fiona. I was disappointed to find out that was only done like twice in the entire game and they were scripted (tripping when running from the girl, and the blood lab escape).

I was also surprised when people were complaining about Grace tripping while running.. like that was literally my favorite part because it adds a horror movie trope mechanic in the game and makes it a lot more immersive. Guess we just have to sit and wait for the new Remothered games and hope it really scratches the same itch HG did..

Imagine a new HG game in the new engine, though? that would be so fun and terrifying.. It sucks being part of an underappreciated fanbase sometimes, lmao.

General Hidden Dialogue at the beginning of the game.

If you press the Examine/Action Button (O Button) when standing at two certain spots (a few steps from the start of the game, and a few more between some trees before reaching the corner) where you explore the yard right at the beginning of the game, Fiona will comment on her surroundings:

"Where...am I?"

"It's kind of cold...the air smells...funny."

I found this out when I was watching the Japanese version of this game and noticed that any time Fiona is besides something that can be interacted with, a "..." prompt appears, which is absent in all western releases.

They were present during these spots at the beginning of the game where Fiona will comment on her surroundings, but since the "..." doesn't appear in the PAL/NTSC version, most players don't even realise these two dialogue options exist.

Gameplay Question What would you have wanted to know on your first or second playthrough?

Hello everyone! I've spent a bunch of time with cheat engine trying to figure out the hidden mechanics of the game and I want to start making content explaining some of it (without spoilers) because I think it might make a first playthrough easier for people. I'm hoping more people will play the game if it's less confusing for them gameplay wise, when I first played the game the minimal instructions given threw me for a loop.

Example of what type of stuff I'm wanting to share: I recently figured out a lot about how Hewie works and how to get him to listen almost every time, consistently. It was one shockingly simple action, but it makes a profound difference. (might even be helpful in speedruns but need to test if it's worth the time loss)

But basically I wanted to ask people what did you struggle with? What would you want to have known more about in terms of gameplay? What's something you tried and thought "why didn't this work?"?

I want to do lore videos too, but I figured it would be good practice for me to start with videos about the mechanics of the game, so I'm mostly focusing on that for now.

Let me know what you think and thanks for reading!

Gameplay Question Where is the dog.

I was running from debilitas and took a ladder down, Hewie could not follow me. I thought he would rejoin me later but I have been playing for almost an hour and I cannot find him. I have run through the entire goddamn castle like three times, I saved and loaded multiple times, got myself killed and he just isnt there. Sometimes I hear him howl, thats it. By God someone please help me or I will end myself.

Hey everyone, I need help opening the .tex texture files from Haunting Ground.

Are there any tools available for editing this game's files in general, and specifically for these .tex files? I wish to translate this game, but I can't open or edit the textures.

Any help or tool recommendations would be awesome. Thanks!

General What are they keeping in this cage?

I know this is probably just flavor text or to be creepy but I still wonder if there is actually something lore based that they could be using this giant cage for.

For those that don't know or want more context, this is in the homunculus hallway technically in Riccardo's area (first accessed in Daniella's part) and you can hide underneath the table here.

General I never noticed this text before

I just thought this was cool, it never occurred to me to examine the hole after Hewie goes into it (getting ready to trigger the enemy trap with Debilitas). I never knew there was any kind of foreshadowing for the enemy trap but this kind of hints at it. Also just cool text 😆

Discussion Lorenzo and Daniella

It was in Lorenzo's best interest to keep Fiona alive, why didn't he order Daniella to calm down and leave Fiona alone? Daniella still obeyed Lorenzo despite him being in a weak state in the beginning of the game, and the way she talked to him sounded genuinely respectful, that's why I'm confused.

My first play through 😁

Post image

I really liked some aspects of the game the creepiness of it and the characters but I felt the running and hiding became a bit tedious. I liked the mechanics of Hewie when they were working properly it was ace to set them on the enemies. The only thing I wished is if I could have damaged the enemies easier. Maybe try another playthrough with the cowgirl skin? 🤔 which unlockable items have the best benefits?

i absolutely loved the first half of the game, the last half with ricardo not so much… it felt dragged out by that point and the atmosphere was strange, regardless overall its an amazing game and very impressive for the PS2 definitely going to play through again in the future to try and craft items because i didnt really use that minigame at all

Just finished HG for the first time! Absolutely loved it. Creeped me out plenty at first and my wife absolutely hated the game over noises. Hewie is definitely one of gamings best pups. Setting, sound, puzzles, using Hewie and Fiona’s boots to beat stalkers make this one of the best survival horror games I’ve ever played.

Just wanted to share but as a bonus should I play Rule of Rose or Fatal Frame 2 remake next?

Discussion What makes Haunting Ground scary for you? What's so special about the way it scares the player?

i'm replaying this game, and i realized there are no other survival horror games i can compare Haunting Ground to. even things like Clock Tower 3 or Rule of Rose still feel like something very different. so i started to wonder what exactly makes this game so special for me. is it the only game to feature stalker enemies and hiding mechanics? no. is it the only game to feature gothic aesthetics? obviously no. is it the only game about gender-specific problems and everything related? of course it's not. but the way Haunting Ground is narrating its story is outstanding.

but even more, Haunting Ground uses a unique imagery to make you feel unease or to scare you, to keep you in tense and feel helpless. be it the enemies, the design of castle Belli, or the mysterious and gross things happening in there, there is something so special about how this game looks and feels.

so i'd like to ask y'all, what makes this game scary for you, and what you like the most about its horror aspects?
