Hello! I am learning the harp. But I am having a hard time with getting the technique right. I have spent a lot of $$$ on lessons and feel like I'm not making much progress.

I am not that interested in being able to play along with an orchestra or anything very fancy like that. I'd just like to be able to improvise and write accompaniments for alternative rock/indie type songs.

I'd love to know about any artists who play the harp WITHOUT proper technique. Just to explore ways the instrument can be played, and to get some ideas to perhaps help with my own development.

I've had it 15 years.

Last year I repaired a big split on the bottom of the same side as this new gap using hide glue and clamps.

I loosened all the strings to take tension off the soundboard but no change in the gap.

My house can be pretty humid at times :(

Hello everyone, I posted yesterday about repertoire for a concert and I got such brilliant suggestions that I'd love to hear your favourite sea and coast inspired pieces. I live in a Coastal town right next to the beach so it could be lovely to have some themed repertoire in the concert. Plus there is so much beautiful water based repertoire for the harp! I play both the pedal and lever harp. Hopefully the pieces wouldn't be horrendously (like months and months of learning) difficult, but I do play to a somewhat advanced level. Open to any and all suggestions!

Hello everybody, this is my first post in this subreddit. I am planning a recital/concert in my local Japanese Gardens, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for repertoire by a Japanese composer that I could include? I would love to feature some Japanese composers as well as Japanese music in the concert. Ideally it would be for solo harp, and 'concert-sounding' enough without being horrendously difficult, but I am open to any suggestions!

Hello all. I am a newbie, and have been looking around the internet for a harp to get started with. I found a harp the seller listed as a "Camac 34" with no serial number and I believe it is a hermine. I am nervous because I am a first time buyer, and dont know all that much about what to look for. The manufacture label looks different from all of the other hermines I've seen online. I want to avoid a dupe, especially because the listed price is 55% off a new hermine. But i understand people sell instruments cheap for all sorts of reasons. I just want to avoid spending $2000 on a fake harp. Now I could be completely wrong, and this is not even a hermine but something else. Im normally a bass guitar player, so please show me a little grace haha

Any help is appreciated. Should I go for it?

Hi harpists!

A few years ago, I purchased a cute Lyon & Healy Ogden that was available as I thought I might start teaching and doing more events. Since then, I've had two kids, decided against teaching for the time being, and only ever did one event with it as I usually take my concert grand out instead. Suffice to say, it's really not getting played as much as I had expected.

So now I'm trying to justify whether it's worth keeping as a potential future instrument for my daughters even if they likely won't play it for a few years (the toddler already is interested in music, and the baby isn't old enough to show much interest yet), or if it'd be better to sell it and find a suitable lever harp if either of my girls show an interest to play the harp like me when they're older. For context, I live in Canada and very rarely do well-priced, good-condition harps of any kind come up for sale and it's been that way for at least the past decade.

I hate having a harp that's not being played regularly, but the scarcity of instruments makes me second-guess passing it on to someone who might play it more in the meantime. I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of renting it out.

If you were in my sensibly-heeled, perfect-for-playing-the-harp-in shoes, what would you do?

my name is Ingo and I am trying to identify an older Irish lever harp I recently acquired in Germany.

Inside the instrument it is marked:

PARC Model 102
No. 1030/78 or 1030178
Dublin – Ireland

It has 32 strings, lever mechanisms, and appears to be a diatonic lever harp.

So far, I have only found one other possible public trace: a sold second-hand listing for a “PARC Model 102A” harp in the United States. ITMA and several harp contacts have not yet been able to identify PARC as a known maker or company.

I would be grateful for any information:

• Has anyone seen a PARC Model 102 (or any PARC harp) before?
• Does the construction, lever type, soundboard, string fittings or label look familiar?
• Could PARC have been a small Dublin workshop name, private-label/trade name, or music-shop-related label from the 1970s?
• Does anyone know of a possible connection to Waltons or other Dublin music shops of that period?

I am not trying to sell the harp. I would simply like to understand its history and restore it carefully if possible.

That lowest C is almost 17 years old. I just saw that the metal no longer covers the whole string, which might have been there for a long time without me realizing it.

Should I replace the string now before it snaps?

Hi everyone! First post here on a throwaway - I am a trained classical harpist that plays heavy metal on the harp and have posted a few viral covers of death metal songs on Instagram and Tiktok (you can find me on socials under the same name as this account).

I want to expand the type of content I make, specifically talking about the realities of being an unconventional harpist/classical musician, because I am sick of only seeing one type of narrative on the harp - upper-class straight, cis, femme white women wedding/orchestra musician. No shade on them, but the harp community is so much more than that, and for those who struggle with this rigid, traditionalist box, I want to be a positive example to show that harp can be more than that.

So here is why I am coming to you all - what sort of topics do you want to see harpists talk about? Every harpist on social media already talks about the pedals, the strings, the immense investment of a harp, transportation, gigging, etc. - but what about the unseen and uncomfortable parts of being a harpist that even major creators haven't talked about? I want to get real with people. I have personally experienced a lot of hardship and fallout from the community for doing what I do, being who I am. I have a lot of ideas, but my experience is just mine and does not represent everyone, so I want to hear from your unique experiences. Let me know! Any comments I get that provide good talking points will be featured on my content.

I fear I may be looking for a while, but I am still looking for a Salvi Egan and I think it needs to be in Europe as I had a quote for the one at Virginia harp centre and it was scary😅 so if anyone has one or knows someone who does I would massively appreciate some advice on where still to look, or even if you’re thinking of selling do let me know 🤣🎵xx (if it’s the colour walnut however, I would ship it from the moon if needs be)

Hey, Ik you don't care, but I have been working on an app that helps musicians learn to read clefs. As a cellist, I am now trying to learn both Tenor and Treble clefs after, of course, playing with bass clef. I am wondering if anyone else has somewhat struggled with learning multiple clefs and switching between them. Anyway, Other than that, I am asking for brutally honest feedback on if you think the app would be genuinely helpful or just "nice to have". Please don't lie and just say it is a good idea. be brutally honest.

Recently I started recording for YouTube, but I still haven't managed to record a decent video not because of bad playing... but because of my double chin. It looks so big, and gross, and fat, that it makes me feel like never wanting to record again nor playing in front of someone because of how ugly I look. I might sound exaggerated, but after a full day of haven't succeeded in recording a video because of it makes me feel extremely discouraged.

Am I the only one with this problem? Every other harpists I see on YouTube and Instagram looks totally fine while playing, and I'm afraid I'll never be able to fix this. If someone has some advices, I would be very grateful for every single on of them. :')

Basically the title, I don't play my smaller harp much anymore because of the limit in range, but also the bottom C buzzes annoyingly when played. I've recently started playing my larger harp again after a while and it's buzzing too! Mainly the highest notes on this one. As you can hear in the video, some strings buzz and some don't. I can't see any obvious gaps or wobbly levers or pegs. It's never done this before.

Harp is Aoyama, from a reputable seller and was bought about 15 years ago. It has been incredibly hot (34+ c) so it may have warped or something? I'm thinking of getting in touch with the sellers to see if they could fix it for a fee but I wanted to check here first!

Hi, I'm trying to teach myself how to write music for instruments other than piano and voice, and I'm working on a piece that is intended for the harp (using Musescore). I understand that writing for piano has a lot of similarities to writing for the harp, so I'm especially looking for advice on where it differs and how to write something that is harpist friendly.

Hello! As the title says, I’m looking to buy a harp. I’ve been playing for about two months now, and playing has become my therapy after a long day working in the heat😂 I have about 25k in cash I’m willing to part with for a harp, and I am undecided on what buying path I should take. On one hand, the more economy option would be to buy a nice lever harp, which is what my teacher recommended, but I want to start integrating pedals into my learning, as that is the ultimate destination of my desired path. So, I’ve been considering just biting the bullet and saving that last bit of cash to drop on a pedal harp. If I go that route, I would prefer not to get a 40 string, but I also don’t really know how many pieces I might play that would use those additional seven strings. I felt that it would be a waste, but if you disagree, please let me know. Anyways, I was looking for advice and recommendations.
