Educational Highlight FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Educational Highlight PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION!
I’ve been working on this Google Site project called “LivebearersRus Archives” over the past few months, collecting media on almost all species of livebearers in the Poeciliinae subfamily. Originally, it started as a private project to keep track of documented hybrid livebearers between me and my friends, but I decided to branch out and cover as much as I could.
I got tired of trying to find livebearer media scattered all over the internet, so I compiled everything into one place for everyone to check out. I’m not claiming full credit — a lot of the content is borrowed media, alongside my own and my friends contributions.
Hopefully, this site will be helpful for others too.
I pasted the link on my profile page and in the comment thread.

Need help about water quality control and some other matters
Hi everyone, i have some question seeking for advice:
- My aquarium water PH level is staying around PH8.5, even if i put in Daun ketapang (Catappa leaf) which by right should make the PH lower, however it just dont seems to change much. any way to naturally keep the PH lower to lets say PH7.5 to PH8? water temperature stay around 27.8c to 28.5c.
- I have quite a high lost rate for my Guppy, i just stock in about 50 in Sunday now i lost about 5, thats about 10% in 4 days. some suggested could be due to water quality.
- my tap water is having PH about 8.5, and this aquarium have a new water before i put in the fish.
- i have natural plant, soil, sand, rock and some other decoration, not sure if this impact, but before these latest decoration, i also having high lost rate for the guppy.
- my tank is about 320 liter capacity.
- i need help how to prolong the life of the guppy, or reduce the lost rate. i had been trying to raise guppy for few years but none of them can really last long time, not even 6 months only very few make to close to 1 year.
- in my previous setup i change water every 1 month since it have plant and filter system but the lost rate is same, and i tried change water every 6 months and result is not much different.
- i feed with powder fish food and i make sure not over feed, and i have shrimp to help clean.
- should i turn off the LED light and filter system at night so the fish can take a rest?
any advise will be much appreciated. thank you and nice meeting you all.

here my tank, with most of the decoration removed temporally.

Normal glass surfing after water change?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Just did a water change. New water added was temperature matched using a thermometer meant for liquids, and I just tested the tap to tank pH using liquid test kit, it's both 8 so pH shouldn't be the issue. Parameters are clean ANN 0-0-0.5.
They just before this were doing it a lot more intensely and as a group. Just going up and down this side of the tank.
Long finned guy doesn't seem to give a crap. He was too busy picking at the blown up detritus.
Is this just expected for new fish to react a bit stressed to their first or so water change in the tank?

Help: General advice How to make sure lityle dude gets his food share?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Tiny long finned guy in the back seems to struggle to swim a lot even with the filter flow baffled. He's smaller and skinnier than the others too. They gobble up the food before he can get to it. I tried just getting it to him last night but the others still got to it and overate.
I tried putting him in the breeder box but he then wouldn't eat. Any tips?
BTW they're destroying a tiny bit of banana here.

Constipated guppies :(
I’m new to the hobby and need some advice.
I have two male guppies and tend to feed them every other day. I feed them TetraMin flakes as well as some freeze dried brine shrimp (as a treat). They only get enough that they can finish it in less than a minute. The day after feeding, both of them have thick dark poop stuck on them and it takes a while for it to drop. They are not lethargic and are always super eager to eat. I almost feel like I’m not feeding them enough.
Anyone know what could be causing it? Do I need better pellets /flakes?

Guppy tank showcase Little guppie tank.
I just added the divider on the left after one had babies. Bro shrimp and babies on the left. Adult guppies and ghost shrimp on the right. I was going to get another separated tank but this is a cheap perfect alternative.

Help: Breeding advice When will she have her babies?
Hi everyone, I recently bought this guppy along with a few others from a breeder. I was just wondering how much longer you think until she has her babies? She isn’t quite squared off in the front yet, but i’m curious. TIA!

Help: General advice Anyone done guppies + gouramis?
For my next tank build I’m looking to move my guppies into a 30+ gal and add gouramis to help control the fry population. Anyone have experience with this combo? Which gouramis are best for community? I don’t want them to attack other adult fish

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
i wanted a 10 gallon guppy tank with just males bc i didnt wanna deal with bunch of babies but im beginning to think its impossible. most of the time i just keep seeing them chase and nip at eachother. ive noticed this lil asshole continuing to chase this particular guppy so i moved him to my 20 gallon downstairs because like wtf CHILL. is there anyway to keep only males and not have them bully eachother to death? or should i just say fuck it and get females? i like guppies because they are pretty but im stressed watching them chase eachother LMAO/

Just got another male guppy endler hybrid locally. The seller didnt know their pH and had him in the bag for 3 hours, so i only temperature acclimated him. I was worried about an ammonia spike if i dripped him in. He was doing great at first, swimming and eating, but now is doing this. Am i about to lose another fishie?
ANN 0-0-0.5, pH is 8. Temp is around 80 due to heatwave. 10 gallon. Fully cycled.

Strain
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So I took a chance on some fry for sale as I wasn't finding anything I liked I was told they were blue tail and the example given of the parents were blue metal snakeskins. They are just starting to color up and showing mainly blue and orange (small amount of green too), they are developing dumbo ear pectorals and have a really amazing iridescent neon blue that shows more under light. They are all pretty similar (5 males and 5 females). Any ideas guys? I do really like them so I am tempted to breed it into a true strain although unsure what I would call it then even. Any ideas on if this is a know strain or even what to call it if a new strain if I can get a solid breed on it?

Help: General advice Are they stressed?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I had 7, woke up to one dead and I don't know why. They were doing so well and their parameters are perfect ANN O-O-O.5. Ph of 8.
Today I turned the light on and they all seem especially stressed. They also aren't pooping much today. Lots of flaring, glass surfing, and darting.
I just don't understand why the 7th one died. I'm so upset

How's my guppy
Hello!
My guppy has been hovering near the surface of the water. He's in a 20 gallon long with three other guppies and some cory catfish. Should I be worried?
Water is testing fine for nitrates, ammonia, and nitrites.

Help: Sickness/Disease/Parasite? Constipated or parasites?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve had them for a couple of weeks now, the tank is still fairly new (4ish months) so there’s biofilm and algae. I notice they graze a lot at the wood and plants. I didn’t notice a bloated belly when I got this one but over the fast few days it’s looked pretty round. I fasted thinking it might be constipation. Is this long white string a result of being backed up or is it a parasite?
It’s a 10 gallon endler guppy tank. The tank parameters are 0,0,5. Temp is between 76-80f depending on the day. PH is 7.5.
