A grocery store "hack" I vaguely remember.

As I said in my previous and first post on this subreddit, I am 44. The grocery store experience has changed a little bit. To many parents, the worst things about grocery stores is when they have to bring their children along. Children cry and want everything that looks shiny or tasty. I, my mother reminded me, was kind of one of those until she found a remedy. Our local Price Chopper allowed my mother to open a box of popsicles before paying for them. Apparently it kept me quite and content. Any similar experiences? Would grocery stores now-a-days allow it?

Slightly off topic:

My baby boomer mother also told me that when she was a child, my grandmother NEVER brought her kids along shopping. My grandfather worked long hours at his funeral home, which made him usually unavailable to watch the kids. However, in those days it was super easy to get a neighbor to look after them. My grandmother, who grew up in the 1920s and 30s, never went to the grocery store with her parents because all the groceries they needed were found in my great-grandfather's produce centric grocery store. (Produce was his store's main thing, but he sold other household items as well. Kind of like those general stores we see in Westerns.) He knew his produce because he grew up on a farm in Boonville, NY that grew and sold it.

I swear I have to drive 9 miles to go the grocery store, they said they’re were gonna build a Ross and a target, though that never happened, please we need some grocery store in this area bc it’s starting to get frustrating to drive 9 miles every time I go to the grocery store, there’s a buc ees but that’s just obesity food, I know I can’t just ask on reddit for a grocery store to be magically built but I am just posting this bc I am frustarated.

Do the grocery stores you shop at have weigh scales in the produce section?

I'm in Canada. I haven't seen a scale in the produce section in years. This annoys me because how do you know how much something is going to cost if the price is based on weight but you can't weigh it?

Is it okay to put my full handbasket on the belt?

I don't know the etiquette. I usually do a lot of small shopping trips rather than a big weekly shop, so I almost always use a handheld basket. I usually put the whole basket on the belt with the items still in it, and wondered if that bothers the checkout staff. Any thoughts?

Fav grocery store - meal preps

Starting to meal prep so want to be more intentional with where I shop to potentially save a little more money but still have decent quality foods. Options are superstore, Costco, no frills, and Safeway. What do you find is best for deals with these specific stores, any favourites? Unfortunately don’t have the time to compare store to store deals weekly espically for saving only a few bucks. Unfortunately, in the past I shopped when I was hangry and bought whatever so wasn’t observant on prices and deals, would love to hear from the regular shoppers who know a bit better! Thanks :)

LazMart

Hello! May nakagamit na po ba sa inyo ng Lazmart sa pagbili ng maramihang groceries? At least 4-5k worth. Kumusta po ang experience?

Plano ko kasi na diyan na umorder ng grocery bilang share sa family habang malayo sa bahay. I have no trust kasi sa pag-manage ng family ng pera hehe.

Thank you so much!

Cute article but not as relevant as it could be. The comparison would have been a lot more startling or magnified if you had compared Walmart to a non-Loblaw discounter. You are essentially just yanking one snotty nose brat off the playground and sending the other brat to the other corner. Both of these retailers are grossly inflating their prices for corporate.

The grocery ring is a gong show right now. I do most of my shopping with Food Basics. Their prices are lower and, most importantly, they have staff working and they don't skimp on customer service.

Do you recall the days of actual food stamps used at the check-out? Did your parents have to use them?

I'm 44 and I remember seeing people use them in the check-out lines. I felt it put them on blast for being poor. Rather than swiping a government card that looks like a bank card, customers would have to tear miniature looking bills out of a booklet in the presence of the cashier (this was to avoid trading stamps with other people). If they were ripped out before hand, clerks were flatly ordered to not accept them.

Freshco mold

Has anyone ever noticed how dirty the produce section is at Freshco bridge and university? Fresh produce is sitting in and on moldy and dirty fridge shelves. Its pretty disgusting 🫣. Most of the produce is either rotting or contaminated. That stuff doesn't just wash off. You really take your chances shopping here. Get what you pay for.

What would you NEVER buy from the grocery store?

I’ll go first…
• Canned soup
• Granola
• Frozen pizza
• Pre cut fruit and veggies
• Shredded cheese / pre-grated parmesan
