Three cities as road networks only. Easy / medium / hard. How far do you get?

Post image

Same treatment on all three: main roads only, drawn over the built-up area. Every coastline, river and lake is erased, nothing is labelled, and each one is normalised to fill its own frame — so size is no help, only shape is.

Easy — if you've ever looked at a map of this place you'll get it in a second. One long, absurdly regular grid tilted off north, wedged between two big voids where the water should be.

Medium — the giveaway is the hole. A wide empty band curls right through the middle and the streets bend to follow it, fanning out in wedges instead of squaring up. Cities that grew along a bend in a big river all do this, but this one does it hardest.

Hard — barely a grid at all. Two long curved spines with ribs coming off them, meeting a straight axis at right angles. It doesn't look like a city that grew; it looks like a city that was drawn. That's the clue.

Answers in the comments in a day or so. I'm curious whether "hard" is actually hard here or whether the shape gives it away instantly to the right person.

Geography, More! The Course I Never Knew Shapes Every City Around Us

Recently discovered how much planning influences transport, sustainability, and even daily life in cities.
Makes me wonder why Planning isn't discussed as much as engineering or management.

Geography, More! I’ve been working on a podcast about the geography, history and culture of every country—looking for feedback

Hi everyone!

I’ve always been fascinated by geography—not just maps, but how landscapes, borders, history, culture, and people shape a country.

Over the past few months, I’ve started a podcast called Around the World in Half an Hour. The idea is simple: each episode focuses on one country in alphabetical order, and in about 30 minutes I cover topics like:
1. Physical geography and landscapes
2. History
3. Borders and neighboring countries
4. Cities and regions
5. Tourism and famous people
6. Cuisine
7. Arts, music, and sports
8. Interesting facts and what makes the country unique

So far I’ve covered the introduction, Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua & Barbuda, and my latest episode is on Argentina.

I’m not a professional podcaster 😛 - this is a passion project that I research, write, narrate, and edit myself. My goal is to make geography enjoyable and accessible for anyone curious about the world.

I’d genuinely appreciate any feedback from this community. If you have suggestions on the content, pacing, topics you’d like covered, or ways to improve, I’d love to hear them.

Thank you, and I hope some of you enjoy the journey around the world with me! 😊

Researching... I found a fun geography game where you guess flags using only their colors

I came across this little game called Flag Colors and thought it was a really clever idea:

https://www.geographygames.app/games/flag-colors

Instead of showing you the whole flag, it challenges you to recognize countries based only on their flag colors. It sounds easy at first… but some flags are surprisingly hard when you remove the shapes, symbols, and patterns.

Which flag colors tricked you the most?

Find the city in the middle of these Great-Circle Angles

The great circle is the shortest possible route between two cities, but not on a 2D map, but on a globe. It is the path that a plane would take from one city to another. A famous example is that most planes from Europe to Japan fly over Helsinki and then across the pole because it is quicker than flying over Asia. However, because we are familiar with the normal Mercator projection, we often forget these routes. If you swipe you get the solution of first 2 ones. And maybe tahn you are able to find the last city!

If you wanna play more rounds: https://visitwhale.com/city-angle/ You'll find the great-circle rounds under categories in Sphere mode.

What is your ideal travelling era?

What is your ideal travelling era?

the rules

Starting Point: Your journey begins exactly where you live today (or the closest settlement that existed at the time).

Period-Accurate Knowledge: You only know what people back then knew.

  • The Pros: You will experience the genuine wonder of sailing from Europe to America in the 19th century, without the concept of modern aviation spoiling the adventure.
  • The Cons: No "cheating" the timeline—you can't travel to 19th-century Peru and "discover" Machu Picchu ahead of your time.

Financial Mirror: Your budget and purchasing power match your relative financial situation today. If you are a budget traveller now, you are a budget traveller then!

Can you work out which city must be at the centre based on the angles of the cities?

I built the game myself and have already improved it a bit based on feedback from Reddit. Feel free to have a look, and if you have any ideas, let me know. Play it Here: https://visitwhale.com/city-angle/

Can you think of any city where this sign would be appropriate?

Post image

5 distances to other cities and only one city is in the middle can you name it. All distances ar in KM. The angles of the single signs are not correct so they are not intended to use.

The Amazing Race

I know the about the YouTube video that was posted by Paul but I wonder if he is still a fan of this show? I noticed that he unfollowed the show’s insta page for some reasons. Idk but I feel that he is salty towards the producers about not choosing him to be in the show as he always wanted to be a contestant

For those of you who love this show, trust me the next season will be awesome! For someone who caught the race running in real life!
