Achievement Cards

I'd like to encourage my players to do different things and avoid stagnation, so I am considering adding a deck of achievement cards that award bonus XP or other rewards. A handful would be out at any time for the group to attempt. For example:

  • Use an improvised weapon.
  • Obtain a store item of Rarity 5 or higher without paying money.
  • Complete a sidequest in an unexpected way.
  • Spend 3 destiny points in an encounter without using them to directly modify dice.
  • Defeat an enemy with fall damage, an unskilled attack, the damage from the Burn quality, with that enemy's own weapon...
  • Use your Brawl skill to disarm an enemy armed with a ranged weapon
  • Spare a Nemesis who would NOT return the favour
  • Keep a promise that works against you
  • Accept significant personal cost to help someone else
  • Lose an ally by sticking to your values and principles

I am looking to crowd-source additional suggestions, narrative or mechanical. Generic suggestions are best, but we play sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero stuff so those would work too.

Thanks!

Adventure Help with starting out some traps

Upvotes

I'm running my players through a dungeon I first wrote up back in D&D 3rd edition, and am trying to figure out how I would convert some traps for Genesys.

The set up:

Players are being harried by archers through narrowing, twisting corridors when they reach a long stretch of straight hallway with a small room halfway down.

When a PC enters the small room, a trap goes off that causes them to become enlarged. Too big, in fact, to squeeze out of the room. Archers continue to plink away at the PCs from further down the hall, and use the now enlarged PC as an impediment to having the distance closed.

Further down the hall, beyond the room there is another trap. When triggered it shrinks the affected character and then a great gust of wind hurls the miniaturized PC backward, through the small room and out the other side. This resets the enlargement trap.

Ten thousand years ago, a powerful sorcerer came to Earth from the far reaches of the universe. With the aid of his followers, this sorcerer enthralled the nomadic tribes of the lands between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. He called himself Anu, and his followers the Anunnaki. These travelers taught the nomads how to build great machines and megalithic structures, encouraging them to settle down and become an agrarian society. Eventually, some of Anu’s followers revolted against him, siding with Nabu and Auric the Conqueror to defeat Anu. A long battle ensued, with Nabu coming out victorious, sealing Anu and his most loyal priests inside egg shaped prisons, buried under their Babylonian Temples. As the years passed by, the temples were swallowed by the sands, lost to time.

After millennia of imprisonment, Anu has been awakened into the modern world by Thrax, the son of Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, as well as Cobra Commander, and Megatron of the Decepticons. Anu now calls himself Ivan Ooze. After deposing Cobra Commander and Megatron, Ivan has taken control of both the terrorists organization, C.O.B.R.A., and the Decepticons. Ooze travelled to the Great Ziggurat of Ur in Iraq to uncover the prisons of his priests, freeing them after locating their prisons.

In response to this, the E.D.C. (Earth Defense Command), working with former Power Rangers, has created a new team of Power Rangers to combat this new threat. A team of four Rangers has already been chosen and met Ivan on the field of battle, defeating one of Ivans priests, Pazuzu, at the Great Ziggurat of Ur. These are the Frozen Force Rangers, the Blue Wooly Rhino Ranger, the Pink Steppe Horse Ranger, and the Yellow Haast’s Eagle Ranger, led by the Green Smilodon Ranger.

With the threat Ooze presents raising, the Rangers must call upon their Zords (designed and built by the Wreckers of the Autobots). However, they must retrieve a power source to activate them. In order to acquire this power, they have travel to the planet of Eternia, specifically the Vine Jungle. While there, the Rangers met with a group of Echidna’s that were transplanted here by Zordon of Eltar when their home world was conquered by Dr. Eggman of Earth. While the Rangers rested, the evil monster called the Reaper attacked, capturing the Echidna’s. The Rangers fought and defeated him, however, he had been given a growth potion by Thrax. The Rangers mounted their Grid Vehicles, the Taiga Runners, and sped to the temple containing the power source they came for. They made their way through the temple to the basement, finding power crystals in a statue. Retrieving the stones they were returned outside to summon their Zords. After using their Zords to destroy the Reaper, the Echidna’s were freed and the Rangers returned home. As the danger increases, a new Ranger is needed. Who will this Ranger be? What form will they take? Only the Morphin’ Grid knows.

This is a setting of my creation and we will be using a book that was authored/compiled by me. This book is not publicly available, but I will assign a passcode for you to gain access to it before we begin character creation. If you wish to join, please respond on this post and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Once you have joined, I will connect you to the Discord server that we use that will have the links to Questline VTT and to Heyzine for the book.

Setting Blue Archive

Anybody know of any Genesys materials for Blue Archive? On a tangentially related note, any jumpchain enjoyers in here? I feel like Genesys is almost the perfect system, with some minor homebrew and some other games to simulate specific jumps, to run a jumpchain adventure through a real RPG system.

Foundry VTT vs RPG Sessions

I am hoping to return to Genesys after a long absence, running some Shadow of the Beanstalk online. I'm evaluating my options for a VTT. I'm currently considering Foundry and RGP Sessions.

I'm familiar with Foundry, as are my players. The number of modules for Foundry are endless. Maps with walls and lighting that add some tactical depth to the game. But it seems like it could be overkill for a narrative system.

RPG sessions seems to be well connected to resources that would simplify my work. I'm especially interested in the integration with adversary databases. I don't really understand it well enough to know its limitations.

I'm wondering what other people have chosen for their VTT and why.

Discussion Experiences with creating time pressure?

So, I'm returning to Genesys after 8 years and my priorities and design philosophy for RPGs has changed a lot since then. I do still deeply love this system and I'm using it to model a setting it's a good fit for, I think.

However, after a few years in the OSR scene I agree with those people on one fundamental issue: almost all adventures work better if there's some time pressure.

What mechanics could I use? Are there any in published materials to take a look at, or have you experienced some homebrew ones?

Shadow of the Beanstalk - Pregen Characters

I'm finally getting around to running Night On The Town. I was going thru the pregen character sheets that FFG/Edge (link below) put out for it and seeing if I could recreate them with the character generation rules from the SotB book. Seems like there are some inconsistencies. In general, the "Total XP" on the sheets don't seem to equal what it required to create them from scratch. Biggest discrepancy appeared to be a 25 deficit for Vince. More importantly, however, there seem to be some incorrect stats, unless I'm missing something.

Aditi - If clones start with 85xp, how can she have attributes at 2/2/4/2/3/2? She would need 100xp to achieve that right? Does she get extra xp somehow, perhaps from the Big Favor? I didn't get the impression that favor xp could be used for attributes but I'm not sure the books says they can't.

More Aditi - Wound threshold is stated at 13 but the book says 9+brawn which would be 11. Strain threshold is 14 but by the book then 9+willpower (3) + grit (1) = 13. Am I missing something?

Mila- Strain threshold stated as 10 but BTB for cyborgs 8 + willpower (2) + grit (1) = 11.

Otherwise fine. It's just a one-shot after all. The question about whether favor xp can be used for attributes is probably the most important if we end up making new characters.

Clones generally have barcodes tattooed on the back of their necks. Is there any reason a rogue clone could/would not remove it the first chance they found? Rather than just covering it up with clothing forever.

If you can’t figure out how to equip potions in Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent, go to the Hero screen and click the small arrow (>) above the equipment slots. The arrow cycles through the different item categories (weapons, armor, potions, etc.). Switch to the potions category to equip them.

Resource Embers of the Imperium: N'orr Morphology Options

For "Embers of the Imperium" I just added new morphology options for the N'orr. According to the lore, many N'orr have wings, bladed forearms, etc., so it should definitely be a potential player option IMO!

https://mygurps.com/pmwiki.php?n=Main.EmbersPlayableSpecies#norr

Thought about expanding it and trying to turn it into a Foundry project, but upon careful reflection I don't think N'orr need anything more complex than this.

Reference Cards for the Mass Effect Genesys Setting

I have designed a deck of quick reference cards for the Mass Effect Setting by u/BluSunrize. These serve two main purposes:

  • Avoid looking up stuff in the PDF while playing
  • Have a German translation for people that do not have good English skills.

Here's how they look (some dice for scale): https://imgur.com/a/KOfB6LK

The cards are designed two-sided with one side English and the other side German. You can print them one-sided if you do not care about the German translation. The release contains one PDF per language with the card faces for that language.

The PDFs have been designed to match the requirements of the print service https://meinspiel.de, see included Readme for details about how to print them. You can message me if your print service has different requirements and depending on what changes are required, I might be able to accommodate for them. Be aware though that I am in no way a professional printer or designer and have no access to any commercial software in the field.

Concerning the content: The cards contain some general rules, like tables on spending advantages, actions and maneuvers in combat, and descriptions of item qualities, both from the core rules and the setting. They list all Biotic and Tech powers. And they list all available talents for the setting (including those from the core rules). The text has often been shortened considerably to fit the cards, but always tries to preserve all information.

Download link

I also work on a separate set of GM reference cards that will contain adversaries and maybe vehicles if there's still space. Those are not ready yet.

Many thanks to BluSunrize for creating this setting, and giving me the blessing to release this.

Question I doing some cyberpunk in Genesys: when should I do Android SoTB vs Anarchy in Dragon City?

Im familiar with the cyberpunk genre but not played the cyberpunk brand TTRPG games, or foniahed the 2077 video games or watched the movies. I have played some of the 2077 video game somewhat so the aesthetics and envy and anti Corporate theme of the setting is familiar enough, but the genre is clearly still one Im inexperienced in.

Anyone have opinions on how I could best choose between doing a Shadow of the Beanstalk (goofy name btw, its kept me out of the setting) vs Anarchy in Dragon City campaign?

I am going to do the latter for an improvved one shot because I can crib so much fantasy junk from a previous campaign, but I want to use the fantasy elements as more of a table familiarity and transition before going heavy on heists and spy intrigue and corpo wars, like Starfield lets players do.

I own all settings and applicable Genesys supplements, I'm more hoping for GM opinions on when one setting is stronger than the other for one's specific usecase. In either event I will be heavily homebrewing, thats just my tables style so I roll with the shenanigans.

Thoughts?

Question PC Idea, mechanical clarification needed

So I try to keep the rules straight in my head but I have some questions about different things, so I built a character to help me explore the things

Fantasy Setting, Elf archetype, Priest career. One of my favorite things to do for building a character is to spend all the starting XP raising a 1 to a 4, then building career around that characteristic (my Ranger build is a dwarf explorer lol). So my elf would be...

232242, 11 wound, 14 strain (great for magic use), 2 soak, nimble gives me defense 1.

First question is about that defense 1, if I wear the heavy robes does that defense stack onto the nimble? Or should I just do the leather armor to bump up my soak?

Next question, if I use a spot in tier 4 and 5 to buy the defensive talent, that stacks onto nimble bringing me to 3 defense total, yes? Also, assuming non-elf, would an armor with defense stack with the defensive talent?

Next question, with my 3 agility I thought, "hey, let's pick up the Greatsword since I'm not hindered by the unwieldy 3 prereq." 2 brawn isn't ideal but I figured I'd train melee since it's one of the career skills, but also for the Priest the book recommends giving melee-light in fantasy settings so I'm already not optimized unless I play this dude in a campaign that just uses melee. Mace is def easier but I don't want easy

My real question for the greatsword tho, when I cast spells I add a setback die for not having at least one hand free. I want to confirm that wielding a Greatsword takes two hands and ergo adds setback to my divine checks, yes?

I'm trying to think what other questions I had, anything else I should consider / things new players tend to forget?

Setting Some additional Talents for a 40k Themed Game

I have been running a 40k Themed Campaign for some time now using the "Dark Heresy for Genesys" Conversion. While it has a large selection of Talents available here are some I created in Cooperation with my Players, I feel like these could work in other settings as well.

Enforced Discipline, Tier 3

Active (Incidental, OoT)

Ranked: No

Once per Round, as an Incidental, when an allied Minion Group within short range fails a check, you can make a Hard Coercion Check. If the check succeeds the Minion Group may reroll with the same pool, keeping the new roll. On a failed check you may choose to execute a minion in the group to treat your roll as a success.

This was made for a Commissar, a Soldier that keeps the Rank and File Soldiers in Line and 'inspired' and designed to capture the essence of: "Do better, OR ELSE" In case it isn't clear from the way it is worded you need to Succeed the Coercion Check or have a Minion in the group killed to allow the Minion Group to reroll. It was designed to increase the players odds in Situation where they are bringing along specialists to substitute their own skill gaps.

Second Opinion, Tier 4

Passive

Ranked: Yes

Increase the number of possible Medicae Checks per Character per Encounter by 1 per Rank in Second Opinion

This Conversion does not have healing items and has a lot of highly damaging weapons, so we felt it prudent to allow the dedicated Party Medic to make more than 1 attempt at healing party members during combat.

Discussion Making the Eberron setting in Genesys: Talent Advice

Hello! So I am a big fan of DnD's Eberron setting, I am also a big fan of Genesys system and feel it pairs nicely with the world of Eberron. I've been working on porting it over to Genesys, will share when I have something more concrete, but I was looking some quick advice as I begin to put together the talents for various Dragonmarks. Below is the Mark of Passage.

Lesser Mark of Passage:

Activation: Incidental

Ability to use House Orien Magic items (tier 1), in addition choose either Co-Ordination or Atheletics, add a blue die when using chosen ability.

So, the Houses tend to each have their individual monopoly, but the ability to be slightly better at a skill and to do a bit of magic once per day always seemed a lackluster explanation for it. The creator Keith Baker has talked about magic items each house uses so instead I wanted to make it due to proprietary techology, that can only be used by those who have the corresponding mark, allowing the House to gain a Monoply that others struggle to copy. For example with the mark of passage, the ability to drive one of the lightning rail trains, or special horse shoes that let horses go a bit faster. With the highest level items allowing them to teleport people from city to city.

So I left out any magic from the initial rank and gave them the ability to use low tier items tied to the mark and a minor boost to a skill related to the mark.

Rank 2:

Basic Mark of Passage:

Activation: Active (Maneuver)

Requires Lesser Mark of Passage

Suffer 1 strain to move to any location in short range, gain ability to use tier 2 House Orien Magic items.

This is basically the Parkour talent from SotBS, think it serves nicely as a minor teleport ability.

Rank 3:

Improved Mark of Passage:

Requires Basic Mark of Passage

Activation: Active (Maneuver)

Increases range up to medium, gain ability to use tier 3 House Orien Magic items.

For the next level increase the range slightly

Rank 4

Greater Mark of Passage:

Requires Improved Mark of Passage

Activation: Active (Incidental)

Can instead spend 4 strain as incidental, gain ability to use tier 4 House Orien Magic items.

Combined with the previous rank, performs exactly like the Parkour(Improved)

Rank 5

Grand Mark of Passage:

Requires Great Mark of Passage

Activation: Incidental

Can use power twice per encounter, gain ability to use tier 5 House Orien Magic items.

For the final rank, just give another use of the ability.

So what do you guys think? is it too strong? Too weak? Is the ability of the mark to progress and grow bad and too much like the force powers in Star wars games?

Discussion Transferring systems, I'd like help with some items

TLDR I got my party to transfer from DnD to Genesys, and I've been able to port over most items- but there's a couple I'm struggling with:

First and foremost is the Wand of Wonder: for those who don't know it is for people who have a gambling addiction. You use it, it loses some energy, and random crap happens. Anything from making flowers to turning my recurring villain into a statue. In world this one is less a magical artifact and more so an item made by a scientist that does random crap for no explainable reason- but flavor is free so I'm not worried about it.

Helm of the Gods- this one is a bit weird but this is how it works: in this setting there's a dead god, and how he is worshiped by the various creatures of the four worlds varies GREATLY [if you know Bleach, he's the Soul King]. As the player continues through the game and learns other ways the god is worshiped, he unlocks new once per day use spells that he can use. He has to chose one each day, and that's the one he has access to.

Tattoo Gun - This was a gun that turns Spell Scrolls into Spell Tattoos. In DnD this meant it removed the class restriction Spell Scrolls have. In Genesys... I have no clue because as far as I know Genesys does not have spell scrolls. I was thinking maybe scrolls count as a single use Signature Spell?... but at that point like.... *what do the tattoos do then?*

Any help is appreciated.

Redundant critical injuries

Many critical injuries are an "all or nothing" effect, like Scattered Senses (remove all Bonus dice from your rolls). So let's say you get shot and now have Scattered Senses. Next turn, you get shot again and roll 67* for another Scattered Senses.

Do we keep that result and the target just got lucky? Or should we reroll? Or push it down to the next injury (Hamstrung)?

* insert cut-scene of kids freaking out

Discussion Adapting Cyberpunk 77 Quickhacking to Genesys

Hi there,

I want to migrate my games from Cyberpunk Red to Genesys/SotB and while I already made new archetypes (not too fond of the SotB ones) I'm now battling with the whole Quickhacking concept.

I made a first draft version of it ... taking into account that as per Cyberpunk lore, almost everyone goes with a Neuroport (a toned down version of the Spinal Modem with smartphone integrated and stuff).

My idea is to use mostly standard hacking rules, just with the extra possibility to Execute Quickhacks if the system you hack is a Neuroport.

And the Quickhacks you can execute are based on the talents you know. I'm pretty sure they are quite unbalanced right now as I "quickly" made the file to have something to work on.

And I'm not to fond of having so many Talents ... but I don't have a lot of people to talk about it, so I thought maybe people around here can help me brainstorm it?

The PDF of this first draft is here:
https://cyberpunk.clon01.net/pdf/SOTB_Quickhacking.pdf

Edit: A few more notes ...

I used a talents because I wanted a Netrunner to invest into it. I don't want any character to just put one rank in Computers(hacking) and be able to System Reset a Villain.

The idea of those talents is to work like a weapon quality. So you do the Quickhack and do a base Strain to the target, then if you have advantages, you may spend them to cause more effects. This way I use the dice fully (successes and advantages).

The Neuroport is a Spinal Modem with a diet PAD (only one Ice, no Icebreakers) so it makes more sense that it can be hacked, and that allows people to spend money to improve defenses, as the basic Neuroport would come with the cheapest sentry ice. If you buy better Neuroport,s you could even have multiple ice defending your head.

In the first step of hacking I use Computers(Sysop) instead of a static difficulty, because I wanted characters to be able to improve their defenses if they are good enough. After all it's in your brain, so knowing how it works, should help you. Apart of ice. Also, this way, attacking another runner is going to be quite more difficult.

Another possibility I thought was to reduce talents, and have them go by a tier group ... like "You may use all Tier 2 Quickhacks" with a single talent. But to be honest, I don't know if its better to have multiple talents, or a grouped one.

Edit 2: I forgot to mention ... I do this for fun. There is no patreon in the background, or promotion or stuff. I do the PDF and the website because I enjoy doing this stuff and sharing. Nothing more, nothing less.
