What actually signals your brain that it's time to focus?

Some people use music.

Some people use timers.

Some people clean their desk first.

I'm realizing that having a consistent "start work" ritual makes a bigger difference than any productivity app I've tried.

What's yours?

Had a good laugh at JDpower valuation for USA MK3

Value knocked down $1075 for being a manual.

Made trade in range from NEGATIVE $75 on the low side to $1175 on the high side for a 2014.

Automatic trade in: $1000 on the low end and $2250 on the high end.

How I finally stopped doomscrolling and started living life

Waddup guys my friend and I just launched Detach,a screentime control app which takes an alternative approach to helping users put their phone down. Would love your honest feedback.

More recently, I started to notice how picking up my phone was no longer a conscious decision, rather it was an automatic impulse every time I felt like I needed that extra stimulation. I noticed this pattern not only in myself, but also the people around me. While I did try traditional screen blocking apps, the friction was minimal and bypassing restrictions was too easy, therefore they never really helped fix my problem.

That's why I built Detach. The app is free and pairs with our NFC card: tap the card to your phone and it blocks the apps you choose. The trick is what comes next, to turn them back on, you have to physically tap the card again. So you leave the card in another room, a drawer, your car, and suddenly mindlessly opening Instagram isn't a tap away, it's a whole trip away. The friction does the work your willpower can't.

I'm obviously biased but this concept truly helped me and my friends fight our problem.  I get that its a promotion but I'm posting here because I truly believe it can help a lot of people. DM me if you are interested

Doing everything "right" but still can't focus at work

I've been working a typical 9-5 cubicle job for over a year and I've struggled to direct my focus the whole time. I feel like I've tried all the advice and it's helped, but not enough. I don't just silence and turn over my phone - I stash it in a bag and keep it as far from me as possible. I have my message and email notifications silenced. I exercise before work and eat healthy during the day. I am lucky to have breaks and often walk outside during these. I have a standing desk and alternate between standing and sitting. I've tried drinking coffee and I've tried not drinking coffee. I've tried time blocking. I've just tried using focus music and I've tried working in silence. I've tried pomodoro. I don't use social media during the workday, even on breaks, and I've greatly reduced my social media use outside of work. I regularly have periods outside of work where I am not looking at a screen or listening to music/podcast.

I feel like I've done a good job controlling external distractions. What I can't seem to manage is internal distractions. I get so easily taken away on a train of thought about something else entirely. I'll be sitting still in front of my computer with my work in front of me thinking about anything but work. I often will think about some particular topic for an extended period and feel unable to stop. So in a way, I actually am pretty focused, but on the wrong thing. Getting off a train of thought can feel like trying to stop watching a really good and addicting TV show, except worse because there is no physical remote I can use to just shut it off. I do find parts of my work pretty interesting - though I can't say I have strong intrinsic motivation to think about it for 40 hours every week. I have had periods of good work focus, and I've even gotten into "flow" state with it multiple times - but this is rare. Most days it feels impossible. Has anyone else struggled with these internal distractions and found a way to redirect your focus?

New tool for self-control of focus

I'm a psychologist, and after noticing how often people "just quickly" check notifications, switch apps, or open social media during work, I built an Android app called Focus Nest. Instead of tracking only session length, it tracks how many focus sessions remain uninterrupted over time through an Integrity Score™.

The most interesting discovery?

People are usually far less focused than they think they are.

I'd love to get feedback from people who care about productivity, deep work, and attention.

I am launching a free peer accountability discord Monday evening. Would anyone like to join?

Hey everyone! I’m launching a free peer accountability Discord on Monday evening and wanted to see if anyone here would be interested in joining.

The Accountability System or TAS for short, is basically a low-pressure space for people who want a more structure and support while working on their goals. It’s for coworking, staying consistent, getting unstuck, sharing small wins, and being around other people who are also trying to follow through on stuff.

It’s still new, so I’m keeping it pretty simple to start. If you’re interested, feel free to DM me and I’ll message you back on Monday with the invite/details.

Started an open discord server for self-improvement

What's up everyone,

I graduated college this past week (it was pretty underwhelming honestly), and with all my friends starting different paths in life, we started a group chat to share goals, advice, and anything worth passing along about getting better. There's a lot of world out there and it would be pretty cool to collectively better ourselves and succeed.

The group chat has been live for about a week and has genuinely been a positive thing for all of us, so I thought I'd try to build something similar with a bigger group of people and more collective wisdom. I know there's a bunch of y'all out there with tips and advice that would help a lot of people!

I created a Discord server called You vs. You. There are channels for mindset, helpful routines and habits, and media recommendations. My personal favorite is the private betterment vault. This is a private channel only you can see, where you write down your goals, dreams, progress, questions, or whatever else comes to mind. The idea is to look back on what you've written to keep you motivated. I've found that writing something down completely changes your relationship with it.

I literally just finished building it so it's pretty bare right now, but I'll be adding things that have genuinely helped me and would love for others to do the same. Just trying to build a community of people who are serious about using each other to get better.

I’ve linked the server in the comments if you want to check it out or join!

Recommend me your desk clocks PLS (for WFH purposes)

Am I the only one who keeps checking his phone from time to time while working into something?

Lately, I’ve had some tasks where I don’t really need to use my laptop. I have a passion for writing (which is also my current job) and distractions are honestly my enemy when it comes to brainstorming 😭. I noticed that I keep checking my phone every few minutes just to see the time. Somehow it always turns into me opening random apps like Messenger or checking notifications. I think you already know what happens next lol. Because of that, I started thinking about getting a simple desk clock so I can stop relying on my phone while working. I’ve been browsing mindless on my phone and even saw a few nice-looking ones on Alibaba while casually searching around.

Do you guys know any good online stores that usually offer free shipping for desk clocks? Thank you in advance for the suggestions.
