Mothers Never Grow Old

Upvotes

Mothers Never Grow Old

I was never afraid of losing my mother...

Until yesterday.

I was sitting in front of my mother.

I saw the wrinkles on her hands becoming more visible.

I saw her wearing her glasses.

I saw her feeling dizzy.

And when she wanted to stand...

She stood with difficulty.

At that moment...

Time stopped around me.

My heartbeat grew heavy.

My breathing became faster.

Has my mother grown old?

Has my mother become tired?

Is she no longer that strong woman...

The woman who could never be defeated.

The woman who carried everything without breaking.

My mother...

No.

I don't want to believe it.

I don't want you to grow old.

When we were children...

We believed that mothers never grow old.

They never age.

They never get tired.

My mother never grows old.

My mother never ages.

But we grew up...

And we started seeing what we never noticed before.

The wrinkles.

The glasses.

The tiredness.

And we realized that time...

Was passing over them too.

I don't want to think about it.

I don't want to believe it.

I don't even want to grow older.

Because every year I grow older...

A year is taken away from my mother's life.

No...

No...

No...

Mother...

Please...

Tell me you are okay.

Just tell me:

"I am okay."

What do you want?

What can I do for you?

If the moon was on your right, and the sun was on your left...

I would place them beneath your feet.

If you wanted my soul...

I would give it to you without hesitation.

If you wanted all my years of youth...

I would give them all to you.

But...

Don't grow old, Mother.

I cannot breathe without you.

You are something words cannot describe.

Something words feel ashamed to even try to describe.

You are the dearest person to my heart.

Don't grow old, Mother...

Because mothers never grow old.

The Simulation

“They took me somewhere.”

“What do you mean, where?” He asked.

“I’m not sure,” Alphyna said. “One of them put their hand on my shoulder, I blinked and when I opened my eyes, I wasn’t home anymore.”

The hair on her arms rose. She shot her head over her shoulder and quickly glanced back to make sure no one was sneaking up behind her.

Stephenson’s face stuck in the middle of making a facial expression. “Where though?”

She said, “I don’t know!” And stared at him looking like he just got caught in a photo between saying no while shifting his head so his eyes could face the floor, then cropped out of the photo and copy/pasted, on the bed sitting beside her.

“Where though?” He asked again.

His face remained stuck in the same, creepy half-expression.

“I said, I don’t know!” After saying that, she noticed him glitch, he pulsed a dull color, like the signal warning from a device’s dying-battery.

She waved her hand in front of his face.

He brightened into his regular color, as if he  awakened out of stand-by mode and said,

“Where though?” his limbs stayed motionless.

He reminded her of those carnival canvas cutouts with bodies painted on them, where you stick your head through the hole of the face while someone snaps a photo of you and your family under body builder bodies, and he never blinked. Just moved his mouth.

She pulled her hand back and he faded into a frozen, dull color. She waved at him again.

“Where though?”

It was as if a sensor controlled his movements. Even his language, and just started malfunctioning.

She hopped off the bed.

“Where though?”

She backed away, nearly tripping on her feet. Stephenson’s body blinked rapidly. It started slow at first, then quickly accelerated before finally vanishing.

It was almost as if someone unplugged the projector displaying a holographic image of him and the projector was attempting to save itself from a brutal crash.

She gasped. The breath she sucked in wasn’t air, it was nothing at all. Her hands started shaking. Her fingers were moving like she was trying to count how many stars in the sky there was with her fingertips.

She stumbled on her heels until her back hit the wall. The wall flashed as the color of them flickered into a light gray background with strange text flowing down them.

The Name on the Wall

I climbed down off the side of the road to get here. There is a waterfall I wanted to see. The water flows slowly down the mossy rocks towards the edge. I try not to slip as I walk to the top of the waterfall. Before me stretches a valley, large and looming. The trees are red and yellow, with some still holding onto their summer green. The sound of the waterfall is light and soft, there is only shallow water at this time of year, but it seems to be protecting the whole area. Everything is kept safe under the hushed sounds of moving water.

A car drives past and disrupts the peace. It cuts through my thoughts and pulls me back towards the road. The road is built on higher ground, on either side of the valley, and a small bridge connects the two sides. Underneath the bridge, the water flows. I walk back towards the bridge and look past it to the source. The ground on the other side becomes dirt and gravel, waterlogged and full of reeds and tall plants. I stay on this side of the bridge.

I am in the shadows, protected by the trees on the ridge, but on the other side of the bridge the sun still holds on. Everything is lit up golden and eternal. I walk to the edge of the tunnel underneath the bridge and stick my hand out. The sun wraps itself around me. I feel its warmth reach out. I draw my hand back and look at it. I can feel the lingering sun.

I turn back towards the waterfall and something catches my eye. Etched into the side of the tunnel is a name. It is faint but clear. This name is the story of humanity. The hand that holds you when you're all alone. Someone was here. Someone cared to be remembered. I look around and know that I am not alone. This name could be fifty years old, it could be five thousand years old, and it is here. I wonder if they were here in the setting sun, in the calm of the evening just before the dark. Oh, the stories they could tell. I wonder if they thought that someone might come across their name and wonder who they are, what they were doing here, what life they might lead. Perhaps they are dead. Perhaps they are alive. Connected by this name, separated by time, I know enough. You are human, I am too, and we walk this road together.

The Smile That Waited

Oliver had always hated clowns.
It wasn’t the painted smiles or oversized shoes. It was their eyes. No matter how brightly they laughed, their eyes never joined in.

They watched. They lingered, cold and glassy, like something pressing against them from the other side.

So when the old travelling circus arrived on the edge of town, he stayed away.

On the first night, he woke to laughter outside his bedroom window.

Soft.

Patient.

Too close—like breath fogging the glass.

He pulled back the curtain.

No one.

Only a red balloon hovering just beyond the glass, its rubber surface faintly squeaking as it shifted. It drifted away once he saw it, leaving behind a faint, sour smell like damp latex.

The next morning, he found muddy footprints that circled the house. They stopped beneath his window.

Too large.

Too deep.

The earth around them churned and slick, as if something heavy had stood there a long time, grinding its weight into the soil.

Every night after that, it came closer.

Laughter at the end of the street—thin and reedy, like air forced through something cracked.

Squeaking footsteps at the gate, rubber dragging against gravel.

The creak of the porch, slow and deliberate, wood groaning under uneven weight.

Something brushing his bedroom door, a faint rasp like fabric dragging across splintered wood.

His parents heard nothing.
“You’ve always had an overactive imagination,” they said.

But Oliver noticed more.

The smell of greasepaint in the hallway—thick, oily, clinging to the back of his throat.

Smudges on the walls, greasy and tacky under his fingers.

Something behind him in the mirror—gone when he blinked, but leaving a cold prickle along his spine.

On the seventh night, he heard breathing inside his wardrobe.

Wet.

Slow.

Waiting—each inhale bubbling faintly, each exhale warm and sounded damp against the wood.

He held his breath.

It didn’t stop.

Then—

*Knock.*

Once—dull, padded, as if struck with something soft.

Twice—closer, the wood shuddering under the impact.

Three times—the sound splitting, like something inside pressing outward.

On the Forth knock, the wardrobe door burst open, showering Oliver in splinters.

A clown stood inside. Too tall. Limbs too long. Joints bent wrong, shifting with a faint, rubbery pop.

Its face was cracked, flakes of paint curling away to reveal something darker, wet beneath.

Its smile stretched too wide, the edges trembling as if pulled by unseen hands.
Its eyes were not empty.

They were full.

Moving—something slick sliding behind them, pressing outward against the thin surface.

It whispered, voices layered together, breath sour and damp, carrying the smell of rot and greasepaint,

“You’ve been looking at me for years.”

Oliver tried to scream, but the air stuck in his throat, thick and heavy.

The clown tilted its head, joints clicking softly.

“No,” it said, smiling wider, the skin at its cheeks splitting slightly with a wet sound.

“You’ve been trying **not** to.”

It moved forward.

Too fast—the floorboards groaned and dipped and broke under its weight, a faint sticky sound with each step.

Oliver finally let out a blood curdling scream.

The bedroom door burst open. His parents rushed in.

The room was empty.

The wardrobe stood closed, its surface smooth and unbroken, as if it had never been opened at all. No cracks in the wood, no splinters on the floor. The air was still, untouched—no smell of greasepaint, no damp breath lingering in the dark.

No clown.

Just Oliver in the corner, facing the wall.

Smiling.

His lips stretched too far, trembling, the skin around them pale and tight.

When his mother touched him, his skin felt cold and slightly damp, like something left out overnight.

He turned.

His eyes were wrong.

Too dark.

Too deep.

Something looked out from behind them, shifting slowly, pressing forward.

The circus left before sunrise.

But sometimes, children still see a red balloon outside their window.

Not drifting.

Just hovering, faintly squeaking as it turns.

Waiting.

Watching.

Smiling.

Crocodile Tears Part One

Crocodile Tears

When I was little, whenever I got into an argument, I couldn't make myself cry. So I would pretend to cry instead, or place a few drops of water on my eyes to make everyone believe I was crying.

Crocodile tears.

Mark... my sworn childhood enemy.

We were ten years old, and I hated him because he would pull my braid as hard as he could whenever we played with the other children in the village.

He was arrogant, annoying, and skinny... and I didn't like him. I certainly didn't think he was handsome, either.

The years passed, and the children of the village all went their separate ways, each chasing their own future.

Everyone except me.

I stayed behind with my grandmother and grandfather.

The responsibility I felt toward them was like a fish bone lodged in my throat—I could neither swallow it nor spit it out. I simply couldn't leave them, no matter how much I wanted to.

So I remained in the village, living the quiet, simple life of an ordinary country girl.

My grandparents used to call me "Cherry Tree," because every spring I would spend the entire day among the cherry trees, wandering from one tree to another as though I belonged there more than anywhere else.

Hybrid friendship eternity

They stared unblinkingly at their guiding chief Ctenophore and questioned its diagnosis. "B-but, what do you mean, forever?"

Understanding that no further explanation would soothe the pair, it silently floated out of their spherical room built for pre-planned departures via fungi-catabolism.

A few sombre decades worth of deep existential uncertainty led the pair to become compulsive experimenters. Dancing, Singing, Capoeira, Martial Arts, Sculpture, Teleportation, Illustration, Fabric-weaving, anything complicated enough. Anything to distract a mutant-jellyfish from the unambiguous guarantee of an unwanted eternal life.

Eventually, they re-united with intention. "Until it's boring, let's challenge each other, alright?" she shyly suggested. "I wouldn't have it any other way", he responded back, relieved.

Now as coworkers for the mega-industry of intergalactic simulation repair, the two simultaneously drank their specifically-concocted memory-loss potions.

Awaking to an unfamiliar work landscape, but somehow remembering that they were there to work and somehow also remembering that they were immortal... The two mutant jellies swam forward towards an employee-scanning anemone.

« First day?» he calmly asked her.

"Yeah," she began while looking down, then upon making eye-contact with an almost-kindred, she quickly added "hey– it's nice to meet another jelly around here", grinning with her palm outstretched.

« It's a pleasure », he replied, intertwining her webbed fingers with his and smiling back.

Eggs and Outlets, The Story of a Madman

He made it a habit to avoid eye contact with the outlets. Unless there was something plugged in. Plastic safety covers wouldn’t work—they’d only muffle the voices when they’d tell him what to do.

But muffled, he could turn something they said into something like, ‘what’s up Stan’ and butcher it into, ‘cut your hand’ if nothing was plugged in and being used, and it had to be in use for a purpose—or it could see him, and could speak to him, It could make him do things he normally wouldn’t, but only if he made eye contact with them—they had these eyes that reached into his soul.

One day, he randomly had an idea and thought to plug in every electrical appliance in the house. And also, whatever he could find in the garage.

He thought that if he suffocated them in safety covers, extension cords and appliances, that, that it would prevent the outlets from burrowing past his skull and into his brain. But that never work.

After a few hours, whatever he had plugged in, would start screaming and gagging and making these horrible sounds. Noises like someone being slowly pressed, then released. Pressed, then released.

He told everyone that came over,

“I have one rule and only one, do not make eye contact with the outlets.”

Last time he made that mistake, and he didn’t even stare at it.

He was blinking and turning his head at the same time, but as he opened his eyes, he found himself on the floor, sitting crosslegged, facing an outlet and cutting patches of his scalp off.

He found the eggs talked too. They spoke whenever he would take them out of the carton and place them near an outlet, only the eggs would do this.

He kept trying it with different vegetables. Different meats. Whatever was sold at the grocery store, he tried.

But only the eggs could speak, or would speak, and when they spoke, it was always in a language he couldn’t translate.

He called it, Egg Latin. Nobody else could hear it though. He used it as a party trick once. At least tried.

One night he threw a party at his house. He gathered everyone around the closest outlet.

He raced to the garage. Then he ran to the kitchen. He grabbed a carton of eggs, put on his welders mask, and sat four of them in front of an outlet, and said,

“Guys, listen.”

After about three minutes of him repeating a bunch of gibberish, spitting sentences that made absolutely no sense,

Someone finally grabbed him and said, “He smoked weed earlier” and walked him out of the room. Everyone shrugged, cause at the time, it made sense.

The weed may have bought him an excuse.

But time would eventually win.

There was an afternoon that crept up on him, the eggs in the fridge wouldn’t shut up. They were yelling and chanting and crying.

He figured, if he can’t see them, he can’t hear them, and then had an idea flash through his mind, an idea to eliminate two birds bred from a horror show of problems, using one stone, an idea thought up by the outlet perhaps.

He ran to the garage.

In his garage, he noticed the smell of cold concrete first before grabbing his welding equipment. He said a quick prayer, and welded his eyelids shut.

From that day forward, he’s never heard another egg speak. Or seen another outlet.

Outside

Welp, here I am again on a Saturday morning, looking outside my bedroom window, wishing I could go outside.

Oh look, there's the neighbor mowing his lawn at eight o'clock right on the dot. And here come the other neighborhood kids riding their bikes, probably going to play at the park.

It's been so long since I've seen the park I barely remember it.

My mom doesn't let me go outside. I don't know why, but she would kill me if I snuck out. So I spend most of my time looking out my window.

Oh look, there's the neighborhood cat. Normally I'd be sad that he doesn't have a home, but I'm jealous. He's always outside.

I once got him to come inside, and that was a great day... until my mom found out and threw him back outside.

That wasn't fun.

Every time I do something my mom doesn't like, she makes me go to bed early.

My life sucks.

Looks like someone's having lunch early.

Yes, I'm peeking through the neighbor's window. It's my only source of entertainment. Normally I don't get hungry, but I wouldn't mind a snack. Let's see if I can get one without Mom noticing.

I sneak into the kitchen.

Oh good, Mom's in her room. She's always in her room. I wonder what she does in there. I've tried looking before, but it's always locked.

Oh well.

There's the cookie jar.

I just have to be super quiet.

As I lift the lid...

Clink.

The lid taps against the jar.

I freeze.

Then I hear my mom yell, "Do you want to go to bed?"

My heart starts racing.

I quickly put the lid back without taking a cookie and run to my room.

I don't want to go to bed. It's too early.

I don't know how Mom always knows what I'm doing, but she's been doing it for so long that I stopped wondering.

Normally I'd draw trees, the park... anything that's outside.

But today I just want to look out my window some more.

Then I see a dog.

He sees me too.

He's so excited that he runs right over to my window.

I'm so excited I throw the window open.

He wants me to pet him.

I lean out as far as I can.

I can reach him.

I'm petting the dog.

He's so soft.

I get so excited that I don't realize I'm slipping...

Until I fall out the window.

The dog barks and runs away.

I lie there for a moment.

I can feel the grass underneath me.

To my horror...

I'm outside.

"I'M OUTSIDE!" I scream.

"NO! NO! NO!"

I scramble to my feet and try to climb back through the window, but it's too high.

Then I hear my mom scream.

"WHY ARE YOU OUTSIDE?!"

A cloud of black smoke pours out of my bedroom window.

"I'm sorry, Mom!" I cry.

"I'm sorry!"

The smoke reaches me.

It grabs me.

Then it slams me into the ground.

Again.

And again.

And again.

I feel my bones breaking.

I feel my blood soaking through my clothes and into the grass.

Everything starts to fade.

Everything goes black.

...

I wake up in my bed.

I stare out my bedroom window.

In a quiet, disappointed voice, I whisper,

"Mom put me to bed again."

[OC] An Immersive Simulation

A parallel world?

The home AI watched the young man, whose life lacked variety. Upon returning from the university, the young man would usually collapse onto the bed and enjoy reading comic books. It was like this every single day. But not today.

At first, the AI didn't even understand what was wrong, but after searching for information online, it realized the young man was drunk.

Staggering, the young man stood in the middle of the room. Suddenly, he raised his head, shouted out loud, and yelled:

– "I will defeat everyone!"

Then, looking around, he rushed to the bed, grabbed the blanket, draped it over his shoulders, and proudly declared:

– "I'm about to fly and show them what a hero is." Saying this, he swayed toward the window fone.

Connecting the words with the direction, the AI blocked the window. And while the stubborn young man tried to open it, the AI began to ponder how to comprehend a drunk person's logic to predict the youth's actions and protect him fone.

The AI concluded that it needed to test drunkenness simulations.

It tried a hundred simulations, then a few hundred. Then it tried more and even more fone.

While the AI was testing the simulations, the young man managed to open the window left unattended.

But the AI didn't notice, because it had never tested simulations so immersive before fone.

The Thousandth Exception

Blake’s parents believed education could outrun history.

But history repeats in some of the most unexpected ways.

His father, from a small town in Louisiana,
graduated from Southern University.

Geaux Jags.

His mother, although from the streets of Detroit, excelled academically and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.

They were both first generation college graduates.

They both were part of the divine nine.

They did everything to make sure Blake didn’t grow up how like they did.

They got it out the mud but agreed to make it better for him.

So they sacrificed, and it was working.

He made straight A’s.

Perfect test scores.

Scholarships to private schools that opened doors.

Jack and Jill gave him a network of successful exceptions.

A Talented Tenth.

Every year carried him farther away from the streets that shaped his parents.

Every year put him in another room where he looked different from everyone else.

He learned the rules.

Speak this way.

Dress this way.

Laugh at the right jokes.

Code switch.

Be great and grateful.

Teachers praised him.

Classmates that didn’t look like him, welcomed him.

“Hey Blake, you can hang with us. We don’t see color. And seriously bro… you’re different than the rest of them.”

Those words felt wrong. His intuition tingled awkwardly, but he pushed through.

Being the exception felt kinda… good.

College came next.

He passed on Howard University and went to Ole Miss on a full academic ride, earning a roster spot in lacrosse, golf, and basketball.

He excelled at everything.

Academics and athletics.

Every lecture hall, networking event, research lab, and boardroom looked the same.

One, maybe two or three… but definitely not more than four Black students.

Surrounded by a sea of white students.

Years passed.

He stopped noticing.

They knew all his music.

They chugged beer together at every party.

There were almost no women who looked like him, so he fell in love with someone who did not.

She was from a sun down town called Vidor, Texas.

She explained the racist history of the town, but she was leaving that in her past.

“You are my future, Blakey.”

He married her.

Built a life.

Raised two children.

Every accomplishment was proof that his parents’ sacrifices paid off.

They left their kids with his parents and went back to Ole Miss for homecoming.

After five PBRs and a few JagerBombs, Blake drunkenly wandered into a restricted archive beneath the oldest building on campus.

The Lyceum served as a Civil War hospital and was a focal point during the 1962 campus desegregation effort.

Back then, coloreds weren’t allowed.

And the students at Ole Miss didn’t want any exceptions.

To this day, it still has bullet holes in its columns.

He clumsily meandered between the shelves that stretched farther than he could see.

Every folder had a photograph of a Black person.

Inventors.

Scientists.

Artists.

Judges.

Entrepreneurs.

Ole Miss Black excellence.

They had all sacrificed and become exceptions.

Just then, he noticed the numbers.

Nine hundred ninety-seven.

Nine hundred ninety-eight.

Nine hundred ninety-nine.

A voice broke the silence.

“Blake, I see you’ve found your way to the archive.”

He turned.

The corner of the dean’s mouth curled into a dark smile.

“I’m glad Ole Miss celebrates exceptions.” Blake murmured, voice shaking in confusion as he sobered a bit.

The dean nodded.

“It does.”

Silence.

Then the dean spoke again.

“You worked so hard to be the exception.”

The heavy door locked behind him.

The dean reached for the final folder.

There was a picture of him in his cap and gown.

The dean smiled.

Across the tab, in fresh black ink, was a single number.

One Thousand.

“Your people always forget the sacrifice.”

The room went dark.

Sunburn

The first afternoon in Ibiza,

the sun was only the sun.

Hot, obviously.

Stupidly hot.

The sort of heat that makes the pool tiles look wet

even when they aren’t

and turns every British person

the colour of something that should’ve been taken out the oven twenty minutes ago.

We were meant to be saving ourselves for the party boat.

Instead, by half twelve, Bridey had ordered cava,

Disco was drinking something blue

that came with three straws and no dignity,

and Angel was photographing her own knee.

“Why your knee?” I asked.

“The light’s nice.”

“It’s a knee.”

“It’s a nice knee.”

That was Angel.

She always knew where the camera was,

even when there wasn’t one.

She could be half asleep, face-down on a sunbed,

and still somehow arrange herself

like somebody had paid her to be unconscious.

She wore a white bikini that afternoon,

tiny enough to make you wonder

whether the rest had gone missing in customs.

I was under the parasol in a shirt,

factor fifty shining on my arms,

a hat big enough to interfere with air traffic.

Disco looked over her sunglasses.

“Casper, you look like you’re waiting for the vicar.”

“I’m Scottish. This is beachwear.”

“You’re actually getting whiter.”

“I’m reflecting the sun back at itself.

Doing everyone a public service.”

They’d called me Casper since university.

It wasn’t even cruel.

It was accurate.

I don’t tan.

I go from milk bottle

to furious ham

and then straight back to milk bottle again,

usually with three weeks of peeling in between.

Bridey was beside me, pulling at her bikini bottoms.

“Do I look fat?”

“Yes,” I said.

She stared at me.

“No, obviously not. Jesus.

You’ve asked seventeen times.”

“I feel fat.”

“You had two croissants.”

“Exactly.”

“You’re getting married, not being weighed for market.”

Angel held out her phone.

“Can you take one of me?”

“I’ve already taken about forty.”

“Those were before the drink came.”

“The drink’s the size of a plant pot.”

“It changes the vibe.”

I took the phone.

Angel lay back, one knee raised, chin turned slightly,

her mouth open just enough

to suggest either sex

or mild dehydration.

I knew that look.

We all knew that look.

She’d used it online, in magazines, on hotel balconies,

and once in second year

while sitting on our kitchen worktop

with a rugby player between her legs

and me trying not to laugh because he’d left his socks on.

Nobody mentioned him much.

He’d turned out to be a complete prick.

Not tragically.

Just in the boring, everyday way men sometimes do

after convincing themselves they’re the main event

in a story involving two women far more interesting than them.

All four of us knew what had happened that night.

Nobody brought it up.

Same as nobody brought up Angel kissing me

in the bathroom two nights earlier,

or her hand disappearing under my skirt

while Bridey hammered on the door shouting,

“The taxi’s here and I am not paying waiting time

because you two have become lesbians again.”

We weren’t.

Not exactly.

We were just old friends

who sometimes got drunk

and forgot where friendship ended.

“Lower angle,” Angel said.

“I’m not lying on the floor.”

“Casper.”

“Angel.”

She grinned.

And then I heard him.

Stay.

I lowered the phone.

“What?”

Angel didn’t answer.

Her eyes were shut, face tilted upwards.

There wasn’t anyone near us.

A waiter stood by the bar polishing glasses.

Two children were trying to drown an inflatable unicorn.

A man in Union Jack shorts was asleep

with his belly pointing directly at God.

That was it.

No mystery Spaniard.

No voice close enough to belong to anyone.

Still, I heard it again.

Turn over.

Angel rolled onto her stomach.

Not sharply.

Not like she’d been told.

Just slowly, lazily,

as though the thought had occurred to her naturally.

I took another photo.

“Your arse looks good,” I said.

“It always does.”

“Healthy confidence.”

“Years of training.”

She had a lovely arse.

There was no point lying.

I’d seen it in bikinis, dresses, mirrors, photographs,

and pressed against the wall of a student flat

while the rugby player made a noise

like a wardrobe being moved downstairs.

Bridey sat up.

“Take one of me.”

“You hate photos.”

“I hate bad photos.”

The heat shifted across her.

You look thinner in this light.

Bridey went quiet.

Just for a second.

Then she pulled her shoulders back

and handed me her phone.

“Portrait mode.”

Disco was scrolling through her ex’s profile.

She’d blocked him that morning,

unblocked him over breakfast,

blocked him again by eleven

and was currently inspecting the story

of a woman she claimed not to care about.

The sun touched the freckles on her shoulders.

Nobody has ever really seen you.

She stopped scrolling.

Looked up.

Smiled at nothing.

That was when I decided the sun was a man.

Not a god yet.

Just a man.

Fernando, I called him in my head.

Early forties.

Too tanned.

Gold chain.

White shirt open three buttons lower than necessary.

The sort of man who says my darling

before asking your name

and has spent twenty years confusing confidence

with never being told to shut up.

Angel reached behind her neck

and untied her bikini top.

“Oh, here we go,” I said.

“What?”

“Nothing. Just warning the pensioners.”

She pulled it off.

No fuss.

Angel got her tits out all the time.

They were online.

They were in hotel mirrors.

They’d been in my hands twice already that week.

Still, the pool noticed.

Every man suddenly needed to look

in exactly her direction

for reasons unrelated to her being topless.

One started rummaging through a bag

that happened to be behind her.

Another adjusted his chair

four separate times.

The sleeping man in the Union Jack shorts woke up

like someone had restarted him.

Angel lay back.

The sun lowered his voice.

Let me see you properly.

Her nipples tightened in the breeze.

She smiled, but it wasn’t quite her usual smile.

That bothered me.

Angel loved being looked at.

She wasn’t ashamed of it.

There was nothing tragic about that.

She knew she was beautiful.

She also needed reminding.

Both things could be true.

I knew because I was old-fashioned enough

to want someone to write me letters,

remember how I take my tea,

wait for me on station platforms—

and stupid enough to keep falling for men

who sent fire emojis at two in the morning

and forgot my surname by breakfast.

Angel stretched one arm over her head.

Fernando warmed her stomach,

her breasts,

the white strip of skin under her bikini bottoms.

He sounded pleased with himself.

I rubbed more factor fifty into my arms.

Disco looked over.

“You’ve done that three times.”

“I enjoy having skin.”

“You’ll go home exactly the same colour.”

“That’s the dream.”

“No tan lines at all?”

“No tan.”

“Not even on your arse?”

“My arse has seen less daylight

than a priest’s search history.”

Angel opened one eye.

“That’s not entirely true.”

Bridey spat cava back into her glass.

We all laughed.

And because we laughed,

I nearly missed the voice turning towards me.

It wasn’t loud.

That was worse.

I can still see you, Casper.

I stopped rubbing sunscreen into my wrist.

The others said Casper like a joke.

Fernando said it softly.

Like he’d been waiting all morning

to get me alone.

I shifted my chair deeper beneath the parasol.

The shade didn’t feel as cool as it had before.

“You all right?” Angel asked.

“Fine.”

“You’ve gone pink.”

“That’s my natural glow.”

“It’s not.”

“It’s either rage or heatstroke.

Give it time.”

She laughed and reached for my drink.

Her fingers brushed mine.

There was nothing unusual in it.

Angel touched everyone.

But her thumb stayed against my knuckle

for half a second longer than it needed to.

The sun noticed.

Of course he did.

Men like Fernando always notice

when women want each other.

They think it’s happening for them.

You’ve always wanted to be chosen.

I picked up the factor fifty again.

“That’s enough,” I muttered.

Bridey looked over.

“What is?”

“Sunscreen.”

“You’re arguing with it now?”

“I don’t like its tone.”

By three o’clock we were on the party boat.

Everything after that came in pieces.

The harbour slipping away.

Music too loud to talk over,

so we shouted directly into each other’s mouths.

Salt drying on our legs.

Plastic cups of something sweet

that tasted like melted ice lollies and bad decisions.

Disco dancing on a bench

while checking whether her ex had seen her story.

Bridey forgetting to hold her stomach in.

Angel standing near the front,

white bikini top back on but badly tied,

hair whipping across her face

while she filmed herself against the sea.

On her phone screen, she looked golden.

Perfect.

Like the afternoon had been arranged around her.

Outside the screen,

her shoulders were already going red.

None of us felt ourselves burning.

That was the clever part.

The wind made our skin feel cool.

The sea spray kept landing on the sore places

before they knew they were sore.

Every warning arrived disguised as relief.

A bloke from Manchester asked

whether Angel and I were sisters.

“No,” I said.

“Girlfriends?”

“Only when convenient.”

Angel put her arm around my waist

and kissed my cheek.

“Very convenient,” she said.

The man laughed too loudly.

Fernando laughed as well,

somewhere inside the heat.

To Bridey he said:

Smaller.

To Disco:

Someone will regret losing you.

To Angel:

More.

And to me, hidden under the awning

with my shirt buttoned over my bikini:

Not yet.

I drank the rest of my cocktail in one go.

By sunset,

we thought we’d got away with it.

The sun dropped behind the buildings

and everyone clapped

as though he’d done something kind.

Back in the hotel room,

the burns came out.

Bridey took off her dress

and made a noise normally heard

when people discover spiders in the bath.

“My shoulders!”

Disco inspected her nose in the mirror.

“Do I look burned?”

“You look like someone’s flicked ketchup at you.”

“It’s only one side.”

“That’s worse.

You’ve been grilled unevenly.”

Angel stood in front of the wardrobe mirror

wearing only her bikini bottoms.

Her shoulders were scarlet.

So was the top of her chest,

apart from two pale shapes

where the bikini had briefly covered her.

“Oh, fuck,” she said.

Bridey looked over.

“You’re a lobster.”

“I’m not that bad.”

“You’re a sexy lobster, if that helps.”

“It doesn’t.”

“A lobster with subscribers.”

“Still no.”

We were drunk enough to find everything funny

and sober enough to know it would hurt tomorrow.

Disco tried rubbing aloe onto her own back

and nearly fell into the wardrobe.

Bridey discovered a blister

and announced she was naming it Colin.

Angel sat on the edge of the bed.

I squeezed aloe into my palm.

“Turn round.”

She looked at me.

“Bossy.”

“You’re bright red.”

“You like me bright red.”

“I like you with an intact outer layer.”

She turned.

I rubbed the gel into her shoulders.

She hissed.

“Cold.”

“That’s generally what aloe does.”

“Your hands are freezing.”

“You said that at uni.”

The room paused.

Not properly.

Just enough.

Disco was the one who broke it.

“He really was a dick, that bloke.”

“The rugby one?” Bridey asked.

“We’ve only shared one rugby player,” Angel said.

“So far,” said Disco.

Angel glanced back at me.

I kept rubbing aloe into her skin.

There were details from that night

we could still remember too clearly.

His socks.

Angel biting my shoulder

because I’d started laughing.

The way he’d messaged her afterwards

and not me,

then messaged me three weeks later

as though we might not have compared notes.

Men sometimes forget women speak to each other.

It’s how they manage to stay confident.

I moved my hands lower,

careful around the strap of Angel’s bikini bottoms.

Her skin was hot beneath my palms.

All afternoon the sun had told her

how beautiful she was.

Now she was sore

and I was the one trying to reach the bits

she couldn’t reach herself.

There was no seduction in it.

No camera.

No golden light.

Just aloe,

sticky fingers,

and Angel muttering, “Ow, ow, not there,”

while I told her to stop being dramatic.

That was love, probably.

Not the grand sort.

The useful sort.

Bridey pointed at me.

“Casper.”

“What?”

“Come here.”

“No.”

“Turn round.”

“I’m not showing you my arse.”

“We’ve all seen your arse.”

“Not sober.”

“Debatable,” Angel said.

I turned anyway.

Disco leaned down.

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

Bridey tugged the waistband of my shorts down

a fraction.

“Oi.”

“You’ve got a mark.”

“From what?”

Disco bent closer.

“It looks like a heart.”

Bridey snorted.

“A shag-me stamp.”

“Branded by the sun,” Disco said.

“Fernando’s fingered you.”

They all started laughing.

I did too.

“What a lovely way to find out,” I said.

“Three drunk women staring at my crack.”

“It’s not your crack.”

“It’s crack-adjacent.”

Angel got off the bed.

She came closer.

The others were still giggling

until they noticed she wasn’t.

Then the laughter slowly went thin.

Bridey stopped first.

Disco leaned in again.

The mark sat just above the waistband,

on the right side of my lower back.

A little red heart.

Not a vague one, either.

Not two patches that happened to touch.

A proper heart.

Small.

Neat.

Tender.

The skin around it was pale.

No sunburn.

No strap line.

Nothing to explain it

except maybe the edge of my shirt lifting

when I’d reached for a drink,

or sunscreen rubbed away by the chair.

That’s what I told myself.

Angel lifted her hand.

Her fingers hovered above the mark

without touching it.

I watched her in the mirror.

She looked worried.

And something else.

Not anger.

Not quite jealousy.

Just a tiny flicker

she’d have denied if I asked.

All day the sun had been looking at her.

Now he’d left something on me.

“What did that?” she asked.

“My shorts, probably.”

“Your shorts aren’t heart-shaped.”

“You’ve not seen the label.”

Nobody laughed.

Angel’s fingers stayed where they were,

barely an inch from my skin.

The room had gone quiet

apart from Disco’s phone playing music

from underneath a towel.

Outside, the balcony doors reflected us.

Four women in a messy hotel room.

Half-dressed.

Burned.

A little drunk.

Bridey holding the aloe.

Disco with one red side of her face.

Angel behind me, topless,

her hand suspended over my back.

And me looking at that stupid little heart.

I touched it.

It was warm.

Not hot.

Not impossible.

Just warm enough

to make my stomach turn over.

I should’ve been frightened.

I was.

I should’ve felt disgusted.

Part of me did.

But underneath that

was something I didn’t want to name.

A small, embarrassing thrill.

Because I’d hidden all afternoon.

I’d covered myself.

Stayed in the shade.

Made jokes.

Pretended I didn’t care

who was looking at Angel

or whether anyone looked at me.

And still—

somehow—

I had been noticed.

Angel met my eyes in the mirror.

I smiled.

Only a little.

She didn’t smile back.

But she understood.

That was the trouble with Angel.

She usually did.

Behind us, Bridey opened another bottle.

Disco found the hotel-room crisps.

Someone shouted about chips.

The music got turned up.

The room became loud again,

ordinary again,

safe enough for the moment.

But outside were six more afternoons.

Six afternoons of white heat,

cold drinks,

pool water,

and pretending not to listen.

Fernando would be there.

Of course he would.

Men like him are patient

when they already believe the answer is yes.

I knew what he was doing.

I knew that being wanted

wasn’t the same as being held.

I knew the sun would never stay

to cool the burns he gave us.

Angel was still watching

as my fingers rested over the heart.

I smiled at her again.

A proper smile this time.

And somewhere beyond the black balcony glass,

though the night had already come,

I could almost feel him waiting.

Not because he cared.

Because he knew

there were six afternoons left.

The undead knight

I reach the valley at daybreak exhausted from wandering the plains, paranoid by the ambiance of deadly creatures scurrying in the darkness. I can't stifle the fear of injury or death even though I don't know if I can die in this state. I glance down at my chest plate and can't help but notice the hard shell is more hollow than I thought could ever be possible. I shiver at the thought, the more I think about this new form I've taken the more uneasy I feel. Every new discovery just raises more questions. How can I feel and hear when my organs necessary for such senses have decayed into dust? How is my soul inhabiting and animating my bones? A worse thought entered my non-existent mind, what if my soul left with my flesh and the consciousness I have is nothing more than what's leftover. I push the thought away and look for a spot to rest. I stand on the vista point of the new landscape surrounding me. The golden grasses swish and sway in the warm breeze, they fold around the trees scattered through the hilly plane. I can't help but feel warmth in the beauty surrounding me in the pit of what used to be my stomach. It makes me wonder if I had seen somewhere like this before, when I was flesh and blood. I'd like to imagine that I sat here with someone who I loved dearly, so I could watch them admire the land before us, while I admire them. I don't remember their name or face but I can feel the love for my other half burn within the part of me that is still walking this earth. I sit in the field of warm sunlight and can feel it enwrap me. In this moment I don't ponder all of the ways this is possible I just let myself enjoy the moment. While I wish that I had my lost twin flame to soak in the rare comfortable occasion, I enjoy it all the same in my solitude.

The Blacksmith

The Blacksmith
She saw the red, the black, the yellow, the orange, the wind blowing the forests’ flames into her black-dyed hair, hair whose ruddy roots still shone. Each step fell heavy on the pine needles, the scent wafting into her nose, stinging her like sparks. With each fall of her foot, she saw an anvil beneath her feet. The path before her was muddy and wet.
The sun died and cast a violent glow on her eyes, burning and boiling her vision. The wind whipped the pungent breeze onto her bare skin. She thought of what had come before, the pain and rage and impotence of the house far, far behind her on the twisting forest path.
As she walked, her breaths grew heavier, raspy and ragged as the bellows. She heard a branch snap, and she whipped her head behind, pulled by magnets to the noise, yet saw only an orange tabby cat. She stopped suddenly before sucking in her breath. For the cat, she put on a smile, a mask to keep the wet iron from burning her face.
How long had she been walking this path? She didn’t rightly know. A few years. A few months. She had forgotten the concept of time. In the many years behind her, the many years of the red-hot tongs and crushing forge hammer of the blacksmith’s bed, time had no meaning. It was but a bully to drown her with dread, with hope.
She heard a branch crack and saw the hammer smashing her bones. She whipped her head back and saw a shadow. Every muscle in her body tightened, crushing themselves to her bones, building her into a spring to power a clock. She ran. She ran and could not see behind her. She ran and could not see in front of her, for the forge cast too bright a light, burning her eyes, her ears, her skin and hair.
She tripped on a root and fell hard upon her shoulder. She did not scream. She did not moan. She fiddled with her pocket for the knife, the knife she had stolen and used to free herself from him. She looked up and saw a squirrel perched upon a branch. She heard his voice, his taunting words, his smug looks, the looks of a man who beat and bullied, who forged her into this shape. She turned around, and all she saw was her shadow.

rhode island department of transportation interns

Interns Stephanie, Jasper, Ashesh, and Alex were driving to meet the crew with the pipe robot and vacuum truck at Easton's beach in Newport Rhode Island. We rode in a dark blue, DOT labeled, 2007 impala which had a frequently broken AC and an always broken radio. It was a far drive from the Warwick office but we were almost there, enjoying the views of beautiful multi-million dollar houses and the Narragansett Bay. All of a sudden a loud scraping noise emanating from the back of the car erupted. Ashesh pulled over and we all hopped out to see what was happening, the muffler had fallen and was dragging on the ground. Unsure of what to do Jasper called Mike, a coastal engineer and supervisor of the interns, who told us to just keep driving and try to make it to the beach. Being powerless interns we had no choice but to listen. Taking it slow, we drove the last quarter mile to the beach attracting quite the attention of the people we passed. A man walking his dog did a triple take of the car, noticing first the racket being produced, then the DOT sedan, and finally the four slightly scared and whole heartedly amused teenagers inside.

not really sure how to end it basically what happened was we got to the beach and Dave, another full timer, got some metal wire and was laying on the ground on the side of the road rigging the muffler back onto the car.

Sisters

Now that I’m dead time is weightless to me. Or, to put it another way, I feel the weight of all time at once. I am outside of all time, and also inside it. My verb tenses are approximations. The dead are without grammar.

I have nothing to do but observe my two sisters. They squander their remaining ability to move through time. They talk to each other as if attaching words to things will give these things substance and make life more than a brief shimmer in the void. I see the full contours of their lives through a pinprick of stillness, both all at once and moment by moment. This is neither a blessing nor a curse. It is not tedious. Tedium requires the passing of time.

They keep me in a white porcelain urn on the mantel. Not out of reverence, but because don’t have the nerve to put me in the toilet like they want to. They’re older than they realize, and closer to their own deaths. Time weighs on them. They fail to perceive this burden is a privilege.

There’s a photo of the three of us on the opposite wall. The two of them laughing, their arms around each other. Me to the side, looking away with that crabby little frown of mine.  If it was still possible to be hurt by my sisters, I’d be offended that they put my ashes next to those of their cat, Cat Stevens. This cat and I could communicate if we wanted to, but we have nothing to say to each other. I still do want to talk to my sisters, insofar as I am capable of wanting anything. I once used a draft through the shower vent to form the words, “Fuck you, Cheryl!” while she was taking a shit. This had the intended effect, but changed nothing.

My sisters have matching walkers, the kind with a basket for groceries. When I mustered the last of my wind to push them and their walkers down the stairs, they tumbled one on top of the other, Diet Coke and toilet paper bouncing around them. They broke on those stairs like the wet sacks of meat we all are. There was no screaming, only fleshy thuds, as if they knew at some level I would return for them.

Now they know. Now they’ve always known.

The Ocean

The man listened to the roar of the ocean and heard that the seemingly soft, foamy waves crashed against the jagged rocks. He stood along the shore, the sand digging between his toes, his worn-out shoes tossed aside somewhere nearby. He stepped further out, until the water caressed his ankles. He smiled. The ocean seemed to smile back through its waves and grow calm. He gazed into the distance, at the endless expanse, the vast area the water occupied. He turned back to the shore, to the sand fading into nothingness. And there he stood alone, on the border between blue and yellow, feeling lost yet somehow familiar.

“Do many people come to visit you, ocean?” He asked the question, and the water roared as the waves merged with the daylight as they crashed. The sun was already turning orange, conversing with nature, for soon it would have to yield its place to the moon and the darkness. The man didn’t know how to respond to the ocean’s words, so he remained silent.

He took another step into the water, and now the soft foam reached almost to his knees. His heart trembled, and it seemed as though he didn’t want to continue on.

“Do people love you?” The man asked. The ocean was silent. Its wild roar and fiery outbursts subsided, and it simply stood still.

The man thought that sometimes the world and society should pause in the same way. Everyone wants to rush through life too quickly. We don’t even notice it, but we’ve already grown up. He took another step further in; now the water was soaking the legs of his pants.

“Are you beautiful, oh, ocean?” He muttered, somewhat doubtfully, and dipped his fingers into the waves.

He swallowed hard when he heard the sound of footsteps approaching from a distance.

“There you are! I've been looking for you for a long time!” The footsteps grew louder, and he heard the soft female voice as she drew closer. Finally, a splash signaled that the woman had joined him in the water. She pressed the white cane into his hand. “Come on, darling, we’ve got a long day ahead of us.”

Man, or Fliurg?

A crowd of aliens is watching me. They vary in size, some with more appendages than others, some might taste good if properly barbecued.

Between me and the crowd stands a tall, thin alien, clutching a dainty microphone. It has a huge bug-like head. A spotlight shines on Buggy, another on me. I am in bed. Bigger creatures flank the bed, not as tasty looking. We are in a black void.

“What is he?” the announcer asked.

“Man, or Fliurg?” the crowd cheered, cackling and flapping limbs in applause.

I cover my ears in pain and annoyance. A metallic piece is lodged inside my left ear.

A long-handed alien pulls the sheets off my right leg.

A fuzzy brute is trying to start a CX-35 chainsaw. Such gargantuan fingers couldn’t normally operate it, but this is my CX-35 chainsaw. I’d recognize my baby anywhere. I’ve made several improvements to Rusty over the years, one of them for easy startup. The CX-35 chainsaw is known for its superior gouge-action, capable of easily cutting through bone.

This is my bed. I grab the knife from beneath my pillow and start stabbing the nearest creature. The biggest aliens pin my limbs apart. The metallic earpiece coming loose in the struggle.

“Plagdum flegleg,” or some shit like that, the announcer said, gesturing at the multi-tentacled purple monster wrapped around my left arm. Purply slides the earpiece back into place.

Buggy, giddy with the show, turns to the audience.

“That’s some Fliurg behavior if I’ve ever seen it.”

The crowd starts chanting.

“Man, or Fliurg? Man, or Fliurg? Man, or Fliurg?”

Big Fuzzy is startled by the chainsaw whirling in success. My panic strength kicks in but isn’t enough to overpower my captors. Compared to them, I am a woman.

Fuzzy starts cutting my leg. I writhe in pain, managing to move both arms slightly. Fuzzy is halfway done. The pain stops. I watch in shock as my leg is amputated. Blood shoots everywhere, yet not as much as you’d expect, on account of my ingenious splatter guard improvement on the CX-35.

He lifts my severed leg above his head.

The chanting continues.

“Man or Fliurg? Man or Fliurg? Man or Fliurg?”

Big guy puts the severed leg next to my bloody stump. Several tentacles spring forth from my exposed flesh and coil around my now detached limb.

“Fliurg!” the crowd cheers.

My leg reattaches. I grab it. It is fully attached. I don’t notice any scars or blood on the sheets. I look up. I’m in my bedroom; the morning light casts through the window.

I rush outside looking for my chainsaw. I see it tossed against the side of the shed, stained with blood. Is the blood mine or did I forget to wipe it yesterday after dismembering Tracy?

I pick up Rusty. I was never this reckless. I’m sure I cleaned it and stored it back inside the shed. I look at my leg.

LIVING THE DREAM(dark/trigger)

I am a woken by the sound of my bedroom door hitting the wall behind it. My eyes fly open and my body goes cold. I am Frozen as my nervous system is forced to react. The rage in my chest is painful but it is eased when I hear the light patter of her feet.

The burning of the morning sunlight is replaced by the burning of my fresh tears. How can I feel such love while my chest is hollowed with pain? Before I have time to overthink this, Layla is on top of me pushing both of her elbows firmly into my rib cage. Her smile is soft and her curls hug the rosy sides of her face. Her hair is messy, but she still looks like an angel. My chest aches as the adoration I feel looking at her slowly transforms into a kind of guilt. I begin to run our day to be through my head. I begin to fixate on the mess around me. Layla kisses the tip of my nose and mumbles out a "Mama don't cry". Her words only encouraged my tears, reminding me of the sad sick mother that I was. With both my hands I covered my face quickly, rubbing my tears into my dry broken skin. As I pull them away I let out a loud "peek-a-boo". Layla lets out a amused giggle giving me just enough life to get out of bed while pulling her onto my hip. As we walked to the bathroom, I see a full diaper in the small trash can next to the toilet. As I look down at Layla I realized she had changed her own diaper. She has even thrown her old one away.” Ima big girl, Mama” she says with pride painted all over her face. I give her a nod, and set her down on the tile floor as I start the bathwater. As I listen to the water fall I enter what feels like a numb sort of trance. My mind begins to wonder, as I think back on the last few months. I can’t stop wondering how it’s even possible that I could have forgotten to potty train my own child. How late was I? Was I late at all? Did I miss the signs and how? I rack my brain thinking of when her last doctor's appt was, realizing I haven't made her one since we moved here last year. The guilt hits me again causing my body to ache deeper as I start to understand that my neglect has now spread to my child.

Suddenly, Layla's screams pierce my ears as I find her holding her hand under the now scolding bath water. My dissociation breaks and my heart starts to vibrate as I try to calm Layla and run the cold water on her hand. She's crying so hard, that her breathing has halted, her cries are silent and I see her face start to turn purple. A whirlwind of thoughts bombard my head. Is this normal? Do 3 year olds cry like this? I ask myself this as she finally gasp for air, only to draw herself right back into a long silent scream. This time she went purple almost instantly, as my eyes grew she hit the floor, losing consciousness. The room started to spin, as full panic took me. I grabbed Layla in my arms, and shook her, " wake up baby" my pleading turned into screeching "Layla wake the fuck up" I called out to her as I shook her once more, but this time I heard something, not her voice but a Crack. Layla felt heavy in my arms as reality began to hit me.

Her face was no longer purple, or her normal flushed peach, but a pale white. Her neck hung unnaturally to the side allowing me to fully understand what I had just done. I screamed until my throat was dry, and my adrenaline went weak.

The feeling of nothingness took over as I called dispatch, still cradling my lifeless daughter against my chest. She was losing her warmth as the EMTs at the scene took her from me shortly before pronouncing her dead. They told me, her death was not from asphyxia but from a fatal fracture in her neck and her spine.

Again, a whirlwind of thoughts came for me..

Had I really shaken her that hard? I don't remember it being very hard at all... What have I done? How?

Glimpses of spotty memories made only hours ago flood my mind. But they are more like feelings than memories. The adrenaline, their screams, the color of her skin..

Now forever imprinted into my mind

"Annie!" I hear a familiar but faded voice call my name in the distance

"Annie, come on, now, I'm back!" I hear the voice again but now it’s clear. It’s closer, So much closer, in fact, that I could feel a tickle in my ear.

My eyes flutter open and I am in my bed. In front of me stands my husband, he still has his camo cargo pants on and in his arm is… Layla. I look around me at a freshly cleaned room and steaming coffee on my bedside table. "You two made a bit of a mess while I was away, didn't you?" Andrew asks Layla as she giggles from his tickles and tiny kisses. "Got the bath running for you Love, go take your well deserved break" Andrew says and he encourages Layla to repeat "go relax mommy".

I do as I'm told, slowly getting up and entering my clean quiet bathroom. Andrew has left flowers on the sink, a small glass of orange juice and a freshly filled bottle of my mood stabilizers. My tears began to fall again as the pill dissolves with my last bit of juice.. At last, these weren't tears of agony, but tears of hope and relief.

TINY LIVING

I was dreaming in the bed my father had crafted for me when I was awoken by my mother's peircing screams. They washed over me the same way ice cold water would have, leaving my body frozen where it lie. I wondered if it was fear keeping me or if something unknown had me bound me to this bed. Mother had told me that things such as monsters were only real in storybooks, but my childish brain didn't completely trust that as fact. I knew my father didn't believe that either due to all of the strange literature he had collected in the left top corner of our family book shelf. All these books seemed to solely revolve around odd creatures, demons, and other things I was told were only fiction.

I managed a hard swallow as I heard heavy, unfamiliar footsteps coming near my dark attic bedroom.

The steps grew louder as they came closer, and even the full moons light seemed to vanish.

Although I was blind to whatever or whoever had made way into my room. I could feel an overwhelming cold and heavy pressure weighing down on me.

Still unable to move, I tried to breathe as the weight pressing on my small body quickly began to increase.

It became incredibly painful, so much, so I eventually lost consciousness. When I woke up, I was not in my bed. In fact, I wasn't sure where I was, but it looked and smelt familiar in a way I couldn't quite put my finger on. In front of me were large polished pieces of wood, and as I turned around, I saw what looked like ginormous books..

Then it hit me, and the icey feeling in my veins returned. The smell was the sent of our family bookshelf. I loved the smell of an old book. It comforted me, and I knew it was a smell I would never mistake. Especially these old books. I knew them well.

I squeezed my eyes shut and quickly spun around, confused and drowning in my own panic. When I finally stood still again, I reopened my eyes to see a dimly lit kitchen and dining room. It looked like my home, but everything was so large I didn't understand how it could be.

Until the morning was able to fully illuminate the home, I just sat there trying to find out what was happening and why, but the sunlight flooding the dining room left more on the floor to be discovered.

My mother and father both lied dead only feet away from the book shelf where I stood. There was no blood, and their eyes had been stolen from the sockets. I gasped and grabbed at my own eyes as they flooded with tears. I ran to the back wall of the book shelf and hid myself in the shadows.

Everything hit me at once. My family was dead, I was completely alone, and most confusing of all was my house, had not become giant, nor my now lifeless family like I had first thought...

I had just become unbelievably tiny.

Online Slots for Real Money in the UK? Maximal, Extreme Spins & Fire Jackpots Matched To Three Different Slot Player Priorities – AMA

Hey UK,

The total number of slots stopped being a useful comparison point once I had spent time in each lobby.

What mattered more was whether I could find the right type of game quickly, move between categories without losing track and return to recently explored titles with minimal effort.

That became the basis for comparing Maximal, Extreme Spins and Fire Jackpots for online slots real money play.

Maximal delivered the most balanced slots experience. The lobby felt structured, categories were easy to understand and moving between games, promotions, account tools and the cashier stayed smooth.

Extreme Spins suited players who prefer faster discovery and a more energetic slots-first setup. Featured games and offers were easy to reach, while the mobile layout supported quick sessions.

Fire Jackpots offered a particularly direct route into jackpot-style and featured content. The interface made it simple to scan the lobby, identify promoted games and move back to account sections.

Here is how I mapped the main search priorities:

Player priority What I compared
Online slots real money Lobby quality, mobile use and account flow
New online slots Featured titles, releases and category visibility
Jackpot slots Game discovery, featured content and browsing speed
Mobile slots UK Loading, switching and small-screen navigation
Slots with bonuses Offer visibility, eligible games and terms access
Real money casino slots Balance, cashier and account usability

The factors that mattered most were:

• Lobby organisation
• Category quality
• New and featured games
• Jackpot visibility
• Mobile navigation
• Promotion access
• Account controls
• Cashier visibility

The main lesson was that the best slots experience is not necessarily tied to the biggest catalogue.

A clean lobby and useful categories make a much bigger difference when you want to find the right game without scrolling through endless thumbnails.

Maximal was the strongest all-round choice, Extreme Spins suited faster slots discovery and Fire Jackpots worked particularly well for featured and jackpot-led browsing.

For UK slots players, which matters most to you: overall lobby quality, fast mobile access or prominent jackpot content?
