Meta Gentle reminder: This is a subreddit meant for penpalling in character

Hi everybody,

As your mod, I’d like to briefly remind all members and visitors of this community that we are here for fictional correspondences. We write letters from the perspective of an alter ego, rather than letters about our daily lives, personal views, or favorite hobbies (however interesting RL might be for some of us).

I'm asking everyone to respect the focus of this subreddit. Future posts seeking pen pals for anything other than epistolary roleplay will be removed.

Best regards and happy writing!

Meta Some ideas for pen pal pairings & plots

Hi everybody,

I have made a similar post right when we started with r/fictitious_letters but as you'll have to scroll down half a mile to find it, I re-post it here.

By doing so, I hope to throw some ideas for penpalling in character at you. Storylines, relationships between characters, stuff to write about. I hope you like some of the concepts.

If you want to share further ideas, please add them in the comments.

Here we go!

Possible pairings & plotlines:

  • Client and Performer: One of you gave the other an assignment. Now the delegate reports on how he is progressing in the matter. Possible pairings could be: an officer and a soldier, a private investigator and their client, a queen and her spy, a murderer and their employer, a journalist and their editor, a thief and their fence.
  • Homebase and Traveler: One of you moves out into the world while the other is homebound. This can have different reasons. Perhaps one of you is tied to the homeland for certain reasons (family, job, illness, ...), while the other embarks or must embark on an adventure. For example, a voyage of discovery, an important mission, a war, ...
  • Mentor and Student: It's good when one can turn to one's old mentor as a career starter. Who could do that? A demon hunter writes to their bishop (because they fear they are possessed), a sorceress tells her professor about a new spell (and its devastating consequences), an ancient vampire teaches someone who has just been bitten and turned.
  • Lovers: You can imagine that. An exchange of letters before an arranged marriage, quarreling couples, exes who have to work on the same project, star-crossed lovers, love beyond the borders of death, ...

email Intensity, intensity, intensity.

I’m a 32-year-old Italian writer. My work explores sensitive themes: death, all-consuming love, eros, addiction, and loneliness. Lately, I’ve been possessed by an indecent artistic hunger I’d like to indulge. I won’t pretend otherwise: I’m selective. My intensity exists only where it’s met with immediate reciprocity, the alchemical result of nervous impulse and untimeliness.
My ideal writing partner is a woman over 25 with a receptive, expressive, and non-judgmental mind, someone capable of meeting me on every possible level, including the most decadent ones. I prefer long, detailed correspondence. I should also mention that I’m exclusively looking for fellow queer artists, so I’m only interested in writing with women from the LGBTQ+ community.

What if we began on the wet earth of a field swallowed by the mountains? Winter stands perfectly still. An early-1940s villa overlooks a ghostly lake. There is no horizon. Only fog and desolation surround us.
We are remnants of broken children, of a misshapen love torn apart by your sudden death. We are will itself, or perhaps the shadows of a past that never truly became the past, because it is still here, only it no longer repeats.

Come to me, flower of torment. I’ll recognize your caress from a single sob.

Call me Franco, but assume nothing about me. I’ll be someone today. Tomorrow, no one can say.

59M Seeking Imaginative Creative Collaborator

I'm looking for a collaborator to engage in story telling through POV communication. I'd prefer to have the scenario such that we discover each others characters, details, location, everything through the communication. The limitations will be our imaginations. Preferred age 30+. DM me if you're interested and include any stipulations you have.

snail mail [30/F] witchy, spooky, haunted historical letters please!!✨

Perhaps one of us is slowly realising we live in a haunted house, or that our small village council is practising satanic rituals?? Perhaps there has been an impossible murder or you're suspecting the local vampire legend could be real?

If this appeals to you I would love to pen pal! I am a very enthusiastic letter writer and my letters are long and handwritten and creative.

I'm open to all different time periods and suggestions, but I'd really like an eerie, haunted element.

Please send a DM! I'm based in the UK but you don't have to be.

Looking for someone to do a summer zombie survival roleplay through letters or in-character messages

This might be a bit of an unusual idea, but I've been thinking about it for a while and I think it could turn into a really memorable experience.

I'm looking for someone who would be interested in a long-term zombie survival roleplay over the summer.

The concept is that we don't actually roleplay in the same location. Instead, each of us plays a survivor living in our own city. We go on "expeditions" in real life (parks, trails, neighborhoods, or other safe places), keep a survivor's journal, create our own stories, and let our characters evolve over time.

The interesting part is that our stories are connected.

In the world of the roleplay, we're two survivors who somehow managed to establish contact after society collapsed. We live hundreds (or even thousands) of miles apart, so meeting in person simply isn't an option. We each have our own shelter, our own routines, our own struggles, and our own discoveries.

Our only connection is through letters—or, if it's more convenient, in-character messages.

We write to each other about supply runs, strange encounters, dangerous areas, difficult decisions, moments of hope, and the loneliness of surviving in a world that's gone silent. Over time, these letters become the only proof that someone else is still out there.

I'd love for the story to develop naturally rather than following a strict plot. We can surprise each other with new discoveries, moral dilemmas, unexpected setbacks, or hopeful moments. The goal isn't to "win," but to tell a compelling story together while making our own summers feel a little more adventurous.

I'm 19, so I'd prefer someone around my age (18+). If you enjoy The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, slow-burn character development, survival stories, or immersive correspondence roleplay, I think this could be a lot of fun.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. I'd love to build this world together.

The frontiers are strange to me; please write of the City (35M)

Has it already been three months that I've been stationed here? The mountains and the plains have not lost their grandeur, but the dust has. And everywhere as I continue inspections is the feeling of danger, boredom, and alienation.

I need not tell you that the needs of our Empire require surveyors, archeologists, soldiers. At times, however, as I look at the faces of the locals impressed into building our walls and cisterns, I wonder whether the Empire is truly worth its cost...

I never thought I would miss the Capital, yet here I am. If you would but share some notes of your daily life there, I would be dearly appreciative.

Yours,

snail mail [50/M] Academics of horror

Hello all.

I'm starting this post by quoting from one of my favorite games:

I remember our first meeting on the steps of the University - a collegial handshake that would doom us both. Your insightful questions during my lectures gave me pause, and I recognized in you something... of a kindred spirit. Despite our differences in age and position, we shared a keen fascination for archaeology, folklore, and of course, occultism.

I want to start a snail mail conversation between 19th century scholars of the occult, metaphysical and mysticism (and that sort of subject), with quite a fair share of Lovecraftian inspiration, where we share our discoveries and subsequent worries and fears.
This is not a "i just found a monster in my attic" thing. It must be subtle, with the clouds of doubt and fear slowly creeping into the minds of the scholars.

If you're in the mood for this, do drop me a DM.

fantasy 32F from the USA and ISO a more Magical Place

Hi! My name is Shadow (online name). I am 32F from the US. I have a lot of hobbies that are connected to the imagination and art like reading, video games, crochet and D&D.

I have never really had a pen pal before but I have a bachelor in creative writing and would love to get back into writing.

I would prefer to penpal either snail mail or but I am mainly looking for a snail mail pen pal. I am open to starting over email or DMs and see if we click and then move to snail mail if you prefer.

Again I have never been pen paling but I am eager to find someone to write letters to as a fictitious character because I play a lot of D&D and I have a some characters in mind that are interesting (at least I think so) or I am open to make new characters in a fantasy setting along side you.

I am happy I found this subreddit and I am excited to meet you all! Feel free to comment or DM me if you think we click!

snail mail [50/M] looking for F noir role play

Hello there,

I'm starting this snail mail journey (actually writing my first letter) and I've come to think that a parallel journey on the noir role play realm could be fun.

I'd be a detective back in the 1930s investigating a murder and you'd be someone I'd be inquiring by exchanging correspondence. I actually have my grandpa's typewriter that's just gathering dust, so might aswell put it into good use for authenticity.

So, if you're a mysterious lady, cigarette holder and all, willing to exchange correspondence with a detective in his smoky room, be my guest and DM me to get this started.

snail mail 🌌 Looking for a Penpal From Another Star 🌌

"To the Being Who Finds This..."

No one knows who built the Relay.

Floating in the darkness between galaxies is an ancient communication network older than any known civilization. Most races believe it to be a myth—a relic left behind by a species long extinct.

Until your character receives a message.

Not a distress signal.

Not a diplomatic transmission.

A letter.

Written by someone from a completely different alien race.

---

My idea is a slow-burn, letter-based roleplay between two individuals from vastly different worlds who begin exchanging messages through an abandoned interstellar relay station.

Perhaps their species have never met.

Perhaps they aren't even supposed to know the other exists.

One may come from a thriving galactic empire while the other lives on a hidden world untouched by the stars. One species may be made of living light, while the other evolved beneath the oceans of a frozen moon.

Through their correspondence they share:

⭐ Stories of their worlds and cultures

⭐ Sketches of strange creatures and landscapes

⭐ Family traditions and beliefs

⭐ Scientific discoveries and myths

⭐ Personal struggles and dreams

Over time, the letters become the most important part of their lives.

Then things become complicated.

Their governments discover the messages.

Ancient secrets hidden within the Relay begin to surface.

And the friendship between two strangers may become the key to preventing a conflict that spans entire star systems.

Themes

💌 Penpal Romance/Friendship

🌌 First Contact

📜 Ancient Alien Mysteries

🚀 Space Exploration

🤝 Cultural Exchange

⚔️ Political Tension and Diplomacy

❤️ Maybe two royals supposed to marry

snail mail Magical snail mail

Hi there! Lately I’ve been craving some more magic in my life, and I think this might be a good place to find it ✨

The idea would be to exchange physical letters (snail mail) where each one of us is a character of magical origin/background (mages, faeries, forest spirits… the sky is the limit).

Writing as our characters, we would talk about their day to day, their challenges, little aspects of their lives… anything and everything.

If this idea seems fun for you pls don’t hesitate to shoot me a DM!

A half witch half fairy (28 F) from the English countryside looking for magical friends and maybe romance?

Hello! I am writing as Amara Rosewood, a half-witch, half-fae costume maker for the local theatre living in a quiet English cottage.

She is sensitive, empathetic, a little bit chaotic, a hopeless romantic, but intelligent and has a strong sense of justice. Her emotions are her power. ( Apart from some kitchen witchery and pink fae glittery magic lol 🌸✨)

Here is who I am hoping to find:

  1. The Romance Arc(M): Seeking a romance writer to play opposite Amara.

Light Academia, grounded energy. Traits: Analytical, structured, slightly brooding, but secretly incredibly tender and protective. (Although can be altered)

The Story: A "wrongly addressed letter" sparks a beautiful, fated-mates, cozy romance between them.

  1. Fellow Travelers (M or F)

If romance isn't your thing, Amara is also looking for platonic pen pals with any magical person :)

Letters will be sent via email and if in the UK, then physical letters with some stickers/ paintings/ recipe cards etc.

If you're interested, send me a DM introducing your character and tell me: What does the morning look like in your character's room?
