Discussion Hot Take: Recyclers shouldn’t accept quality mods and also just ruin the quality mechanic.

When space age was first coming out I was so excited. I couldn’t wait to see how people would deal with quality and the massive factory chains they would create trying to get legendary items. I was thinking of how I would mine quality ores load them on trains and deal with all the random qualities each step having to think about all the extra qualities and maybe storing the legendary ones for later.

Instead of something like legendary steel actually being rare you just recycle LDS. I remember when I first realized the way people make legendary circuits they just go to vulcanus and recycle anything that isn’t legendary. It really bummed me out and felt like such a cheap and boring way to do it. This actually killed a lot of motivation I had to play the game when I discovered it was the way everyone does it. Obviously everyone should be able to play how they want but I am still so disappointed not being able to see the huge factories trying to produce legendary items until they have enough for their actual base.

In my opinion this mechanic should have been designed differently I am not exactly sure how. Maybe a really expensive endless research that makes quality modules better and somehow removed upcycling.

Id love to see some kind of quality rework mod maybe I will make it one day after 2.1 is fully released.

EDIT: quick edit since a lot of people aren’t reading full post or I worded some things poorly.

  1. I don’t like recycle loops I think quality from recycling shouldn’t exist if you recycle an epic item it should give default quality back. Recyclers should also probably give way less resources back and mostly be a way to void items you really don’t want.

  2. A end game research would buff quality modules this makes it so quality mines are viable because you would eventually have a decent chance to actually get things like legendary ores slowly making your quality factory better and better at producing quality items.

Also maybe you don’t agree with those ideas this post is mostly about how I was just disappointed with how quality works not how id fix it I am not a game designer but a lot of people seem to be expecting me to have a solution.

Discussion When you try to reach perfect ratios the game gets way harder

I always hated the uncertainty of just placing things down and see how it turns out. This playtrough i approachdd it differently. I put in ratio calculator and factory planner. I started actually Caring about things like full belts and setting up the smelterys and mining sites so i have another 4 full belts. I need to set up a new iron plate factory every few projects because its actually so demanding making everything have a set output. I love it but it makes my game so much more longer and tedious.

Just wanted to talk about it lol

Question Why are my bots not building on Aquilo?

Hello

I don't understand why sometimes parts of my blueprints are not being built! Sometimes bots are waiting for an ice platform or a layer of concrete being built before they can place the building on top. I get that. Yet I have watched them wait for several minutes and the ice platform never arrives. Once I manually place the ice platform and/or the concrete, the building commences.

I made sure that I have enough additional bots in my inventory. The battery is powered, I do have ice platforms and concrete in my inventory and I have enough personal roboports so they could support all the construction bots. There is no roboport building within reach that might messing with things.

What is going on and how can I fix this? Thank you for your help, this is driving me crazy!

Edit: Once i leave the area, wait for the bots to run out of charge and return to me and then return to the ghost buildings, the bots finish the built no problem! But there has to be a better solution than that!

Edit2: My character is standing very close to the ghost building, literally right outside the screenshot.

Edit3: This is not about roboports being overwhelmed. There are no roboport buildings on the planet yet. Just me and my personal roboport. When I check the map, there are no bots flying anywhere, except the handful that you can see on the screenshot.

Edit4: I play vanilla, no mods at all!

Question Need Strategies for Valcanus.

So I have played Factorio a lot before, So am not a total newbie .The planets are a different thing tho ,I played fulgora and gleba once and quitted soon .

This time i went to VULCANUS first .

I have a working mall for construction and logistic items and i can automate foundry and mining drills.

But

What am I supposed to take from vulcanus to nuavis? Like whats the absolute mandatory things one should do after unlocking vulcanus ?

1. If i take founderies to nauvis ,am i supposed to first melt iron ore to molten iron and then cast it to iron plates to get the productivity bonus?

But won't this mean i have to export calcite too?

2. Isn't it just better to move everything to Valcanus ?

I won't have to export calcite either and it's basically free on vulcanus ?

Or am I missing something ?

What's the use of nauvis ,if vulcanus is just literally free unlimited items ?

I'm lost ,I need some strategies .

Will appreciate if someone can point some way.

Multiplayer Never played Factorio multiplayer — Is it worth it, and where can I find a group?

Hey everyone,

I’ve always played Factorio solo, but I’m looking to try multiplayer for the first time.

Is co-op worth it? How does playing with a team change the game compared to running a base solo?

Discord recommendations: I’m not in any Factorio Discords yet. Where’s the best place or community to find a group to play with?

If you have a Discord group looking for another player or run a server, let me know!

Question Why isn't Factorio not on the Steam Train Fest?

Is it because Factorio is too hardcore into the technical operations of train logistics and programming. We aren't so concerned if it looks pretty.

Question (2.1 experimental) Water / Fluids no longer transfer on space platform when deleting connected tanks?

Before trying out experimental version, if 2 tanks were connected, and I deleted one of them, the fluid transferred to the connected one..

So I assumed it was the same, however I just went to delete a few water tanks on my platform and the water just disappeared, didn't transfer into the connected tanks, causing me a bit of frustration.

Is this a bug, or did they intend to change this?

Space Age Question Is this intended?

It seems that you can't place space platform tiles past a certain point but you can place their ghosts? But also it doesn't work if you use blueprints? and it shows that you can place it with blueprints until you go into map view? The wiki says that it should be infinite in all directions except up in which you can only go 200 tiles. This was done on the latest experimental version.

Question Why does it say not enough to fill one rocket?

Why does it say not enough to fill one rocket? 50 is enough to fill a rocket.

it needs more tanks to build and i tried manually putting the request there (it onl needs like 6 or something) but that doesnt work for some reason and i dont understand why.

how do i get that to be delivered there?

i also cant manually fill a rocket because im not on nauvis at the moment.

Question Need help identifying these canister-looking items.

I'm on the railway level of the demo and given my OCD, I'm trying to repair everything exactly as it was more or less. Not looking to be convinced to wing it. I've figured out basically all the other objects, including the intended order of operations on the crafters (though one of the inserters seemed to be in the wrong spot so I adjusted that), but anyway these are the only things I can't decipher. Kinda disappointed the wiki doesn't show ruined sprites and I might add that myself someday. So what are these?

Complaint Devs refuse to fix a simple bug. I can't be the only one annoyed by this...

When moving around in a space platform view, the star parallax scrolls faster than the planet. This makes them seem closer than the planet which contradicts the fact they are rendered behind the planet. I am not complaining about realism, I am reporting a geometrical impossiblity implied by the scene that feels off even when you can't explain it.

Compare these two recordings for yourself.

The fix is simple but the devs refuse to fix this and I don't know what to do anymore...
At least there's a mod for this.

Question Looking for logisitics help

In this Nilaus video, at around 13:20, he uses radar to send logistics signals across the map. It's not reading the contents of the storage chests for the modules correctly. I have 10 speed modules in the network elsewhere, so it always shows the count as 190. Can someone give explicit instructions on how to fix it? Thanks.

Discussion Quality overhaul mod.

Hi everyone I am making this post to share an idea I have for a quality rework. I would also enjoy if you shared some ideas you have or feedback on my idea.

Also I am unsure if this is all possible with the current modding capabilities.

- A new building you feed unwanted quality items into. This building would upgrade all of your quality module bonuses making them more powerful. There can only be one of these buildings placed at a time I am unsure if the exact size maybe a 6x6. The idea is you would want to transport your unused qualities to this building and in return you would get a better chance at producing higher quality items via module bonus upgrades. In the extreme late game I would want legendary science to be a realistic goal and ideal for mega bases focused on eSPM.

- The more you give a specific item to the building the less the bonuses give you. For example you can’t just give it uncommon iron plates the entire game because your bonuses would drastically slow down. In the end game you may even feel inclined to give it something like spidertrons if you are trying to make a mega base and squeeze your quality bonuses to the max.

- Recyclers no longer accept quality mods nor produce quality items. If you recycle a legendary item you will get common items back. I do this to discourage the use of recycling loops instead I would like to see players move their junk items to feed the building.

This mod is mostly meant for people who enjoy building mega bases. The idea behind this mod would be to use quality throughout your entire play-through feeding the building until the very very end game where you can start reliably making legendary sciences which currently isn’t really a good thing to do in a mega base optimized for eSPM. At this stage you would deconstruct the building and make a mega base using your quality bonuses and see how much eSPM you can get to.

I also like the idea of the logistical challenge of getting your items to the building which is why I believe you should be restricted to one. I am currently unsure if it should be one per save or one per planet.

Hopefully I did a decent job at explaining this I wrote it all on mobile and often am not very good at conveying my ideas lol. Let me know if you have any ideas or questions I am unsure if I would ever make this mod if I do it would be after 2.1 full release. If anyone else somehow really likes this idea feel free to steal it and mod it in yourself.

Space Age best way to clear huge biter nests early game?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Death world, I'm about halfway through blue science.

To kill 1 huge nest it takes about 50 gun turrets and 500 - 1,000 red ammo. Using the method just place down heaps of gun turrets and put ammo into them with the z hotkey really fast.

I have the tank with explosive shells but it shoots so slow that the large nests just completely swarm and destroy me.

Is there any better way to destroy lots of nests? I have to clear about about 20-30 of them.

Tip My even loading train station

This loads the chests in an even rate so as soon as there's cargo ready it loads into the train as fast as possible. Each block of 6 chests is it's own 'system' by connecting all 6 chests to the arithmetic combinator which divides by 6. The output is then passed to each of the 6 belt inserters which are also connected to their individual chest with a green wire. The inserter is only enabled if it has less than or equal to the average. This ensures that each chest has the same amount of material in them.

Each 'block' of chests uses a different output from the arithmetic combinator, 1, 2, 3 4. This value is then passed via the power cables to a final decider combinator which requires 'each' signal to be above 350 (8400 total) for a full train load, 700 for 100 stack items, 1400 for 200 stack items, etc. which then signals that this station can be picked up from. (I use LTN here, but can easily be done other ways). One o the constant combinators has the actual value I'm looking for (8,000 iron ore in this case). The other constant combinator has LTN specific values and arent relevant to this setup). This setup can easily be expanded to different size trains.

Question "Station Not Full" seemingly does not work.

Post image
2 Upvotes

In this picture is my isolated test with Rest stops as the main stop with load and unloads being interrupts.

I'm trying to use a modular interrupt based train system, but found that using the (station name) is not full waiting condition doesn't work even when their is no other train and the station is clearly "not full". The reverse of this issue happened to me when I was testing a train block I had made where the train would think the unload station was never full and always tried to path to it despite the waiting condition of "(station name) is not full. The Trains in the testing train block have the unloads to figure out what was happening I tried to do an isolated test hence the weird looking set up.

Picture of the train block I was testing with the trains having load as their main stop and rest and unload being interrupts.

I don't know if this is a bug with the "Station is not full" waiting condition or an issue with my understanding of trains? So please help!

Question Does anyone have a creative idea for the shape of a train based city block?

I really enjoy building city blocks and working with trains but hate the normal rectangular, hexagon or octagon shaped city blocks.
