The point I’m trying to make is that Nate and Rue’s connections to Jules in Season 3 should’ve been swapped. Nate should’ve been the one messing around with Jules, and the wedding scene that Nate and Jules had should’ve been Rue and Jules instead.
I’m not even against Rue and Jules having the off-and-on relationship they had for a year after graduation because, honestly, going back to a toxic relationship out of familiarity is relatable to a lot of people. However, I felt like their continued romance in Season 3 was a waste of time and not something anyone was really asking for.
In my opinion, Rue’s relationship with Maddy—and vice versa—should’ve been highlighted much more. And no, I’m not saying this as someone who romantically ships them, although I certainly wouldn’t have been mad at that. (Before y’all come for me about them having minimal interaction, Fezco and Lexi barely interacted in Season 1, and that relationship still worked.) I just think Rue and Maddy could’ve been really compatible as characters. But that’s neither here nor there. My point is that focusing more on their friendship would’ve complemented both of their storylines much better. It would’ve made more sense for Maddy to get caught up with Alamo because she was trying to help Rue, which should’ve happened much sooner in the season, and it would’ve raised the stakes considerably.
Not to mention, Rue dying to save Maddy from Alamo and his business would’ve fit the overall tone of Season 3 much better. The way Rue was killed off was too good for the season we actually got. It felt shoehorned into the story, and because of that, it almost felt disrespectful to the potential of the storyline.
(Man this got away from me a bit) In conclusion, Nate messing around with Jules would’ve at least explained her terrible personality in season 3 because well, Nate brings the worst out of people.
