NeoPlayer – An MPV-powered Android player for local, NAS and cloud media

Hi everyone!

I've been working on NeoPlayer, an Android media player built around libmpv for users who keep their media across local storage, NAS, cloud services and self-hosted servers.

Instead of juggling multiple apps, NeoPlayer aims to provide one place to play everything.

Features

  • MPV-powered playback
  • HDR, hardware acceleration and video equalizer
  • Anime4K real-time upscaling
  • Frame interpolation
  • ISO and 360° VR video playback
  • OpenList visual management
  • WebDAV / SMB / FTP streaming
  • Direct playback without transcoding
  • Automatic subtitle loading
  • Playback history and auto next episode
  • Emby & Jellyfin media libraries
  • Plex / Navidrome / Subsonic music support
  • DLNA casting
  • IPTV (M3U)
  • Privacy Folder
  • WebDAV backup & sync

Playback happens directly from your own storage.

I'd really appreciate any feedback or feature suggestions.

3rd Party App/Add-On I made a little app that solved decision paralysis... it's a TV guide that "schedules" your content!

When you first run it, it will ask for your server address and an API key: this is needed for reading your shared library, profiles, and playback devices from the backend.

After the first run, your users sign in with their emby logins, same as the client 😁

By default, you'll get completely random shows for each of your libraries. TV Show-style libraries will play your user's latest episode, but curated channels can show random episodes (see "just pokemon" in the screenshot above lol).

Here's the repo: https://github.com/DomHarris/Emby-TV - let me know if you use it, run in to issues, have feature requests, need a hand setting it up, etc.

Emby + Tailscale + GL iNet Travel Router?

Ok…I’m trying something for the first time. I’m traveling and took along a GL iNet MT3000 travel router in hopes of being able to access my home Emby setup. So far I’m having a little trouble.

I’ve successfully installed and activated Tailscale on the router, and connected it to the local (remote) network where I am. I can see it on my Tailscale admin panel along with my other Tailscale clients including my Emby server. And, I can successfully browse the internet through that WiFi connection.

Now, I’m trying to connect the TV in my condo to that travel router and thereby get to my Emby server.

I can connect to the travel router fine and use streaming services through it (Netflix, etc), but when I try to point the TV’s Emby app towards my home server I can’t get a connection.

So far I’ve tried plugging in the following to the Emby app as a server IP:

The IP of Emby server via Tailscale (i.e. 100.x.x.x) The IP of the travel router (i.e. 192.168.x.x) The IP of the travel router gateway (i.e. 192.168.x.1) The IP of the travel router’s Tailscale “Router Virtual IP” The Tailscale “MagicDNS”

None seem to work.

I’m a little lost here after this. I’m sure I’m missing something simple like enable “Exit Node” or “advertising subnets”

I should mention I can successfully connect to the Emby server via devices running Tailscale natively…just not through the GL iNet router.

Thanks for any help

3rd Party App/Add-On Moonfin, a truly cross platform client

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone!!!!

If this is your first time hearing about the Moonfin project, welcome! Moonfin is a little shared ecosystem of third party clients that shares UI, functionality, and features across TV clients, Web, Mobile, and Desktop clients. It has been around since November 2025 and it is now on basically every platform you can think of. Up until now it was a Jellyfin only thing, but that's no longer the case.

Moonfin Community Discord: https://discord.gg/moonfin

Moonfin website to test the web client and see more info: https://moonfin.io

──────────────

How it works

Everything is tied together by the Moonfin Server Plugin, which now installs on Emby right alongside Jellyfin. The plugin is what powers the shared Moonfin experience across all of the Moonfin clients. It lets you log directly into Seerr, holds server wide MDBList and TMDB API keys, syncs your settings between Desktop (web gets counted as desktop if accessed through desktop or mobile if accessed via mobile browser. neat right?), Mobile, and TV, and handles the features and integrations that make the whole thing feel consistent no matter where you're using it.

Install the plugin on your Emby server, point any Moonfin client at it, and you are good to go.

──────────────

What the clients bring to the table

NOTE: ALMOST everything here can be toggled on and off. No setting or UI is forced on you. It is YOUR media, YOUR way.

  • Featured media bar slideshow with image preloading and content filtering, 5 different styles to chose from
  • 4 Custom app themes and the ability to create your OWN custom themes
  • Fully customizable home rows, including Seerr rows, TMDb rows, IMDb lists, and MDBList lists with proper posters
  • Cross server playback, so multiple servers show up as one unified library
  • Full Seerr integration with a dedicated requests screen, push notifications (as phone notifications and in-app banner for TV and desktop), download progress, and issue reporting
  • MDBList ratings from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Letterboxd, Metacritic, Trakt, AniList, and MyAnimeList
  • Two different media detail screens with different styles and layouts to best suit your liking
  • Live TV and DVR with an EPG refresh and lazy loaded programs
  • In app YouTube trailer previews with SponsorBlock, theme music, and audio and subtitle delay adjustment
  • Full playlist control with no item limit
  • PIN protection per user and parental controls with content rating filtering
  • Ebook, comic, and audiobook readers, plus a retro games library if you're into that (I know you are, dont lie)
  • Offline mode with local first playback and original or transcoded downloads

Why so many clients?

A lot of people ask how Moonfin ended up with separate clients across so many platforms.

It honestly started pretty simply. The original goal was just to add the featured media bar to the Jellyfin Android TV client. Once that existed, people started saying it would be cool to have something similar on their platform. Then feature requests started coming in and it kind of took off from there.

At the same time, platforms like webOS, Tizen, and Roku didn't really have alternative clients available like Android TV, Android mobile, iOS, and Apple TV have, so it felt like a good opportunity to create some. I enjoy building things and helping where I can, so I started working on ports. Having LLMs around for quick experiments, refactors, and figuring out unfamiliar platform quirks definitely helped along the way too.

Why open source and why not charge for it?

Honestly, I just enjoy building things and helping people. Open source lets others learn from the project, contribute if they want to, or adapt things for their own setups.

I have no plans now, or in the future, to make any of these paid.

GMCA 1.0.5 — a native, gamepad-first Emby client for Nintendo Switch, PS Vita and a Pi on the TV (free & open source)

Thumbnail gallery
24 Upvotes

Short backstory: I wanted my library on the Switch, forked Switchfin with Claude Code and migrated it to Plex first — that shipped as pleNx. Then the community kept pushing the scope (more servers, more devices), and since an AI pair makes shipping features really fast, it grew into GMCA (Gamepad Media Center Aggregator): one native, controller-first UI for Emby, Jellyfin, Plex and Stremio, on the consoles you already own.

Free, open source, third-party — not affiliated with or endorsed by Emby.

  • Point it at your Emby server, then Quick Connect (no keyboard) or username & password — no extra account
  • Favorites, Resume, Next Up, transcoding; Home shows your server's views in order; full person pages, season pages, one-tap full-season download
  • Switch, PS Vita, Raspberry Pi/TV, Windows, macOS, Linux, PS4 — identical UI, accent follows the server (Emby green)
  • MPV playback (direct play + HLS transcode, external/embedded subs, audio tracks, chapters; H.265/AV1 fine), offline downloads in original quality, 14 languages
  • Also does WebDAV/FTP/SFTP/HTTP shares + USB drives on Switch

Rough edges in v1.0.5, being upfront:

  • PS Vita is still unstable — small GPU/RAM budget and I need testers. If you're on a jailbroken Vita, grab the debug build that dumps logs (GMCA-debug-overview.vpk), reproduce a crash, and open a GitHub issue with the log — far easier to trace over time than comments here.
  • On Vita, 720p is the max I've validated so far.
  • A few connection issues have been reported. If you hit one, an issue with the exact context (device, LAN vs remote/WAN, direct play vs transcode, error shown) is the fastest way to get it fixed.

What bitrate do you choose for downloads on iPad?

I'm loading up my iPad Pro 13" with movies for a trip tonight, and just chose original bitrate as I didn't know if the other bitrates would noticeably degrade image quality. I'm used to plex where I could select a resolution, rather than bitrate, so I have no idea which would be best. All of the files are 4k, so to save space I was thinking that one of the other bitrate options could allow me to save more options for the flights.

So which bitrate do you use? Is there a good balance of quality that still delivers on a high res 13" screen, while saving space?

Suggestions needed to help elderly parents

I'd like to setup the easiest way for my parents to access my Emby server. My server is available via URL so that part's easy. I used to have them connect via Chromebook to Chromecast on their LG TV. The TV is older and doesn't have WebOS so no Emby app.

My parents are now 89 & 87 and were getting confused on how to connect to my server. The Chromecast no longer works, so I was wondering if there's a simpler way for them to connect, or should I just get them a new Chromecast and walk them through connecting each time (Mom has dementia). They have an older LG TV that's not running WebOS. Any suggestions?

UPDATE - Thanks to everyone who took the time to provide input, it really helped! Once I learned of all of the ads on the Firestick, I cancelled the order I placed and got the Roku Ultra. Seemed to be a consensus that it's simple to use and I agree. I just ran through setup on the Roku in my house, created the account and installed Emby and a few other apps. I took a test drive with it and I think this is gonna work! I'll be bringing it to their house tomorrow to connect and teach them how to use it. Wish me luck! 🍀🤞

Emby movie identification

I've noticed that compared to other Emby competitive products, that Emby will consistently make the wrong decision in trying to identify a movie file.

For example, of which there are many, I added Jurassic Park (1993) and its first instinct was thinking it was the "Making of Jurassic Park" instead of the movie itself. I've seen this multiple times.

Why in the world would the Devs think the default answer for a file, with similar syntax, would be the "making of" instead of the actual movie??

Edit: I tried it again. I removed Jurassic Park and replaced it with a file simply called Jurassic.Park.1993.mkv. Pretty plain. Plex picked it up correctly. Emby thought it was "The Real Jurassic Park", some documentary.

I shouldn't have to force it with the IMDb or TMDB ID or similar.

Delay in content starting to play in latest Android TV app?

My Emby for Android TV app updated to 2.1.48g and I noticed that when I click to play any content it has a bit of a lag or delay before the playback actually begins compared to previous version where it would begin instantly.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a bug? Or could a server issue?

Emby on Shield Pro requires playback correction for audio on everything

Problem - any video file I play starts with perfect video but no audio. Running Playback correction three times fixes the audio consistently.

Yesterday all files played without issue. I have not updated or changed any software or settings, and SmartTube and Nebula work perfectly.

Setup:

Server version 4.9.5.0 on PowerEdge T630 dual Xeon processors with 128GB RAM on gigabit Ethernet LAN

Client version 2.1.48g on Shield Pro

Files are .mkv, vary in size from 4 to .186GB

Resources for starting a home music collection

I've been encoding 4k Blu-Rays and playing them in Emby for years. I want to do the same with music.

I have a ton of questions that aren't related directly to Emby. Questions like the best store for digital audio files, encoding settings and best software, file organization and lots more.

I don't want to get answers to these questions here. I'd like to know where to go to ask questions about home music collections. When it comes to building offline music collections, what are your favorite:

Reddit subs?

Other online forums?

Sites/blogs with reliable information?

YouTube channels with good tutorials and recommendations?

2 Hard Drives 1 Folder

Hello, I have a question. I have two hard drives connected to my computer, which runs 24/7 and acts as an Emby server for my home network. Right now, my TV shows are split across both drives. Is it possible to merge these two different paths into a single "TV Shows" library in Emby?

To clarify: I have a folder called "Serien" on hard drive A (G:/Serien) and a folder called "Serien 2" on hard drive B (F:/Serien 2). Is it possible to have Emby display both folders together under one single "TV Shows" section? It looks a bit messy to have two separate libraries for this.

Emby for UGREEN Nas would be great!

UGREEN officially support Jelly Fish. Could make the move but I don't like the UI and not sure how the jelly fish and emby live together.
So a "native support" (not via Docker) would be great.

“Dead media” management

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had a smart solution for this question:
I have an Emby server with multiple users. They can request media for it through Ombi.
I would like to see if requested media has been watched by the requester.
Bonus would be if I could see if the media is currently being watched by another user. Would not want to delete a series someone is in the middle of
And finally a simple list of media that has not been accessed in the last 6 months.

Goal is to determine if I can delete media without removing something that a user might still be planning to watch.

Thanks for thinking with me!
