• Tight Overnight Windows: You can't shut down a business during store hours, so techs are stuck working rushed graveyard shifts where everything has to be 100% operational before the doors open at 6 AM.
• Outdoor & Drive-Thru Variables: Weatherproofing, specialized mounts, and high-brightness displays bring a lot of unexpected physical complications that standard indoor gear doesn't have.
• Site Survey "Surprises": Techs show up on-site only to find out the wall backing, power, or conduit isn't anywhere close to what was listed on the original plans.

When you’re taking multi-site projects live in these fast-paced environments, where does your team usually hit a wall?

I built Room & Board, a lightweight, modular, signage dashboard meant to run on Cisco RoomOS devices (Board Pro, Desk Pro, etc.) when they’re idle, so a codec screen becomes a glanceable info wall between calls. Generally meant for end-user devices - point the device’s signage URL at the domain and let the user configure it as they see fit. It’s a plain web app, so it also runs on any touch-enabled display or browser (viewport is locked to 16x9 4K/1080 so you’ll need to zoom out in browser/mobile to view).

It’s free, open source (MIT), no account, and no tracking.

What it shows (mix and match on a drag-and-resize grid):

- Worldwide weather, air quality, UV, sun/moon times

Hosting: use it free at https://roomboard.app, or self-host it. It’s a zero-build static site plus one Cloudflare Worker, and most data sources are keyless. Self-hosters can also flip on advanced cards behind a toggle (live HLS video and camera gateways).

Privacy: no analytics by default; there’s an optional anonymous usage ping you can disable in the diagnostics tab.

I've been using a Barix RetailPlayer for years and have been very happy with it.
Unfortunately, with the new cloud licensing model, the subscription cost has become too expensive for my use case (I only have a single player).

I'm looking for an alternative hardware player (not a PC) with web management (not important cloud access is ok local) that can do the following:

• Play Internet radio streams according to a schedule (different stations depending on the day/time).
• Play scheduled MP3 announcements, for example:
  • on specific dates;
  • on selected weekdays;
  • every hour between two dates;
  • or other recurring schedules.
• After an announcement finishes, automatically resume the radio stream.
• If the Internet connection goes down, automatically fall back to a USB flash drive and play local MP3 files until the connection is restored.

I only need one player, so I'm looking for something reliable but with a reasonable cloud subscription cost.

Does anyone know of a commercial product that offers similar functionality to the Barix RetailPlayer?

Almost every digital signage project starts the same way.

"We just need a few screens."

Then, a few days or weeks later...

"Can we have different content on weekdays and weekends?"

"Can this screen show something different?"

"What about public holidays?"

"Can we interrupt everything for emergency announcements?"

"Oh... and we'd like to schedule promotions by time."

The original playlist suddenly isn't the project anymore.

The business workflow becomes the project.

I'm curious how often this happens to others.

What's the one client request you wish you'd known on Day 1 because it completely changed the project?

Hello I own a velocity VDS-50 digital sign and I was trying to customize it myself. I called velocity support line and they said they don’t manage this sign at my location anymore. So can I just customize it myself? If yes, then how do I do it? It does not seem to have any ports to plug my laptop into. Power source seems to be magnetic. Any help would be appreciated!!

Currently we have two MagicInfo displays and looking to replace this platform, but reuse the panels. About the only thing working for it, is that it can have multiple videos playing onscreen at once in seperate zones.

I’ve looked into multiple alternatives and tested YoDeck, only to discover it has the same limitation as the others, where only one video at a time is supported.

I guess I could make one a different format perhaps, one a video, one a powerpoint… maybe.. but is there any option out there that just allows multiple videos playing at once?

Every digital signage team eventually runs into a problem that seems simple at first...

...but ends up taking far longer to solve than expected.

I'm not talking about obvious issues like a screen that's completely offline.

I mean the ones where you spend hours (or even days) trying to work out what actually happened.

Maybe it was:

• Content showing unexpectedly.
• A schedule behaving differently than expected.
• A player that looked fine but wasn't doing what it should.
• A configuration issue that only appeared under certain conditions.
• Or something completely different.

Looking back, what was the problem?

More importantly...

What was the clue that finally helped you figure it out?

I'd love to hear some real-world stories from people who've been through it.

Today I replaced a traditional countdown video with a live HTML scene on our digital signage player.
Instead of exporting a new MP4 every time the countdown changes, the player simply loads a webpage. The countdown updates itself automatically, and the playlist continues to run as normal.
This made me think:
Maybe digital signage shouldn’t be limited to playing images and videos.
Maybe every playlist scene could be a live web application.
Imagine replacing static media with:
Live countdowns
Meeting room schedules
KPI dashboards
Weather
Announcements
Any web-based information that updates itself
Curious how others are approaching this.
Are you still exporting new media files every time information changes, or are you rendering live web content directly on your displays?

I got an unignorable attack of curiosity two days ago and compiled garlic-player surprisingly successfully for iOS. No idea why, nobody asked for it, but here we are.

This adds iOS as the 5th native platform (next to Android, macOS, Linux, Windows).

For a long time, I managed playlists by manually checking things like:

• Has this content expired?

• Has it been approved?

• Is it assigned to the correct screen?

• Should emergency content interrupt the normal playlist?

It worked, but it was repetitive and easy to miss something.

So I built a small browser-based Playlist Rule Engine that evaluates each scene before publishing.

Instead of manually checking every item, it returns one of four decisions:

• PLAY

• HOLD

• SKIP

• INTERRUPT

The current version includes rules for:

- Expiry date

- Approval status

- Office hours

- Target screen

- Emergency priority

I'm interested in feedback from anyone managing digital signage.

What other playlist rules have you found useful in production?

I run a small high street business and thinking of implementing a digital signage system. I want to display in-store products, promotional offers, still and video files but would like to also add other interesting content such as weather, news headlines, etc. I don't have a huge budget and don't really want subscription services. I'm fairly good at creating my own media content. Any suggestions?

I found out our lobby display had been frozen for more than 10 minutes.
Nobody noticed.
I was three floors away.
The screen looked “online”, but the content wasn’t progressing.
That made me realize checking whether a display is online isn’t enough.
For people managing screens across floors or multiple locations — how do you know when a screen is technically online but the actual playback has stalled?

I'm testing a small workflow idea around digital signage playlist management.

The problem I'm looking at is simple:

A promotion or event has an expiry date. Once that date passes, the content should automatically leave the active playlist and the remaining items should reorder without someone manually editing the playlist.

Example:

Scene 1 → Scene 2 → Event A → Event B

Event A expires.

The active playlist automatically becomes:

Scene 1 → Scene 2 → Event B

No manual removal.

For people managing signage screens: is expired content / manual playlist cleanup actually a recurring problem for you?

I'm trying to understand how you handle this now before I build or package anything.

Why we built it:

We've had a simple clock and weather app running on their own subdomains for years, originally built for Anthias users. When we finally looked at the traffic, we were surprised: over a single 24-hour window the clock served 1.22M requests and the weather app 1.68M, from dozens of countries. Turns out there's real demand for free, no-strings signage content that just works, and most of that traffic had nothing to do with our products at all.

So instead of folding these into a paid product, we spun them out as a standalone community project. It's free, there are no SLAs or roadmaps, and we plan to keep adding apps based on what people actually ask for.

Hi everyone,

Just looking for some recommendations from people who are already using digital signage.

We have 16 coffee shops and each store has 3 or 4 horizontal screens. Right now we just use USB sticks with static menu images. It worked ok at the beginning but now its getting hard to manage every time we need to change something.

We have a mix of LG WebOS 4 and WebOS 6 screens, plus some Philips Android 8 displays, so it needs to work across both.

What we need is something cloud based that can:

• Show different menus based on the time of day like breakfast then lunch.
• Keep all the screens in the same store playing in sync.
• Every 60 seconds show a promotion for 10 seconds on all the screens at the same time, then go back to the menus.
• Make it easy to change menu prices without editing and uploading all the images again. It would be nice if each store manager can update their own prices without needing to know Photoshop or anything like that.

Not really looking for the cheapest option, just something that works well and is easy to manage.

What are you guys using? Would you recommend it or stay away from it?

Greetings, we have 4 "tv's" in our head office that used to display various information pages, they haven't worked for quite a few years now..

One in reception had info on the building and things like LTA records etc underneath a Sky News feed.

Two of them were in different workshops displaying production schedules intermixed with "case studies" pages ( for the "look what we can do" presentation to potential clients when they were shown round )

The fourth ( which I only realised was there recently ) was similar to the first one but in the upstairs open office area..

.. which is a long winded intro into what I would like help with..

I've recently been made the supervisor of one of those workshops and would like to get the production schedule working again.

The TV's are Samsung and apparently use MagicInfo as the display software..

They are no longer allowed on our network as they are Windows XP and our IT department have taken anything not running Windows 11 off it..

I have no idea how MagicInfo works or if there is a Windows 11 version that can be run on a mini-pc?

Whoever set up the original system some 13 years ago is long gone and I would like to find some decent tutorials on how to make it work..

The production schedule used to just look at an Excel sheet with the data in it, I know where that is on the network..

From what I've read there's a server side part to it and then the display part that puts the pages on the screens.. is that right?

We are looking to replace our current digital signage software for our stores, we have around 50 screens, Samsung QMB series, we are looking for something value for money, easy to use and have apps like power bi and Instagram integration, preferably cloud based

Over my 10 years in IT, I’ve repeatedly faced the same challenge: upper management wants a digital signage solution for office and remote locations, but existing market options fall short. In my experience, projects usually stall due to high costs, hardware dependencies (like Raspberry Pi shortages), strict IT security, or overly complex user interfaces for the non-technical staff tasked with updating them.

To solve this, I developed a lightweight, browser-based digital signage platform focused entirely on the basics. It is designed to be highly cost-effective, low on network bandwidth, and simple enough for any office employee to use.

I am currently at the MVP stage. To circumvent performance issues on older smart TVs, I have also prototyped an Android app optimized for affordable Android TV boxes.

I am now looking to stress-test the solution and evaluate its market feasibility. I would highly appreciate any technical feedback or testing support from the community.

I work for a brewery and I want to find a digital solution for displaying our weekly truck schedule for our warehouse staff. Right now, they only know an order is shipping based on the printed shipping paperwork they get each morning. The issue is that twice recently an order was missed in the printing process and did not make it onto the truck. If our team had access to the shipping schedule they would have (hopefully) noticed that an order was missing from the paperwork.

My requirements are pretty minimal. I want an electronic display that I can set up to display all of the shipments that are going out each day; a big day would be 10 shipments, so it's not a huge list. I'd like to be able to update the display from my office, which is not in the same building as the warehouse, but is on the same Internet network. The display itself doesn't need to be huge, they all work out of a shipping station that is a single desk, so we could mount the display above the desk.

I'm not a super techy person, so if there are other specifications I should add to this, please let me know.

i've being noticing over the past few years is that interactive displays are being used for much more than digital signage or presentations.

in many workplaces, they're becoming collaborative work spaces rather than just large screens.

Instead of one person controlling the meeting, multiple people can contribute simultaneously whether that's sketching ideas, annotating documents, comparing layouts, or building mind maps together. It changes the dynamic from presenting information to creating it as a group.

I think that's one of the more interesting shifts in display technology. The hardware has improved, but the bigger change is how people interact with it.

My view is organizations will use interactive displays more for collaboration, than presentation screens in near future, any thoughts
