My husband has 20+ years as an integration engineer, 5 years as a software developer and now wanting to transition over to devops. Has had top secret clearance before for many years. He just got his AWS certification during his 3-year stay-at-home-dad gig while watching my son. He's returning to the work force and has been applying. I keep reading "in this market". I'm sorry I sound out-of-touch but how bad is it right now? When he first started applying, he had 2 interviews within 2 weeks of applying but didn't get either of those positions. It's been 2 months after that and he hasn't gotten any callbacks at all. Not sure if he just got lucky with those 2 interviews right off the bat.

A year ago I posted a thread about my first ever job in IT as a Cloud Engineer, and it went to the front page with 200 upvotes. Long story short, I got fired because of my social anxiety/underperformance. We had night shifts a few times a month, and when there were P1 or P2 tickets, we had to escalate them to the senior engineer who was on call. My problem was that I always wanted to fix the ticket by myself and ended up calling too late while the client was losing money because of the downtime...

Anyways, at least they paid me five salaries after the sack. I've traveled around Europe for a year to clear my mind, and now I literally forgot everything. I even subscribed to KodeKloud around January and haven't opened it ever since. Maybe I need professional help, or maybe this job and all the pressure just aren't for me. Anyone else in a similar position?

Right now I may try to get some certs but its getting really scary, no one wants to hire juniors in my country(Eastern EU) and I don't even know how to get in front of other candidates. Projects? Certs? Good soft skills during the interview?

SWE/SRE background, ~7 years experience, applying across engineering and adjacent roles. Laid off earlier this year in a company-wide cut.

I tracked everything since the layoff, so here is the actual funnel:

- 240+ applications
- ~50 companies replied with anything human at all (screen or better)
- 33 reached a first round
- 9 reached a second round
- 4 reached a final round
- 1 offer, which stalled in negotiation
- Everything else: rejected at resume screen, req closed, or ghosted

Mostly just wondering if others are in the same boat. The numbers made me question myself a lot until I laid them out like this and realised most of it never even reached a person. Curious how everyone else's search has been going this year, and how you are holding up.

I've got ~6 years of experience as a Senior DevSecOps Engineer (Kubernetes, AWS, CI/CD, Platform Engineering, Security).

Hey everyone,I need some career advice.

I have been working as a DevOps Engineer for 1.5 years at a large MNC. Due to a recent company-wide reorg, I was moved into an "L1.5" Cloud Ops role.

The current reality of my situation:

The Workload: Very light tasks. I have a lot of downtime.

The Schedule: It is shift-based and includes an on-call rotation.

My Tech Stack: Good experience with AWS, Terraform, CloudFormation, and CI/CD migrations.

The Missing Link: I have zero production exposure to Kubernetes (K8s), which is hurting my external job hunt since almost every job posting requires it.

I have two options internally right now, and I am torn on which path to take while I plan my exit:

Option 1: Stay in the L1.5 Cloud Ops role. Use the massive amount of downtime and light workload to aggressively study Kubernetes, build labs, get certified (CKA), and apply for external jobs in parallel.

Option 2: Move to an internal L2 Cloud Ops role. This might look slightly better on paper and give me slightly deeper troubleshooting experience, but it is still shift-based, has on-call, and will significantly reduce my free time to study and interview.

Should I leverage the easy L1.5 paycheck to fix my K8s gap and apply externally, or is it better to take the internal L2 progression first?Open to all suggestions, especially from anyone who has navigated the Ops-to-DevOps pivot without production K8s experience. Thanks!

The hardest part has been staying motivated. Watching months go by without an opportunity makes you question yourself, even when you're putting in the effort every day. Still, I haven't stopped applying because I believe all it takes is one chance.

Hi, does this sound normal for a DevOps job? Or am I doing too much?

I'm currently working in a place as the sole DevOps engineer running the platform/infrastructure, doing backend development, coding/fixing mobile apps, PRDs, security reviews, observalibility, patching, risk registers, compliance,getting involved with IT rollout, business cases, chasing vendors and meetings for cost/new tools, chased every few days for expiring documents for Vanta compliance, hiring and background checks as HR left, chasing teams to make sure projects are in order as head of engineering left. SaaS projects always delayed or not paid. Directors don't want to hire and want to split more work. New initiative as with most places was AI, rolled it out to be governed they say 2k a month on AI spend is too much for Devs, want to have a local containerised AI with internet access on laptops with sudo access for all Devs, with managed updated models by just myself. One of directors is a kind of dev and started submitting 1400+ lines of code and Todo files with me as the sole reviewer...then chasing as I can't keep up with submits and the local AI model being used makes a lot of mistakes so always has to be adjusted. He talked about getting a few a100 Nvidia to run in and running it locally at his house for everyone...explained a setup even on something like OVH, with safeguards, PII detection etc. all controlled in one place would be better for security/compliance was shut down and local AI idea going ahead....

Am I doing too much in this job? What would most people's thoughts be?

I've been thinking a lot lately about cognitive load in DevOps and how hard it becomes to maintain a true mental model of a cloud footprint once a company grows past a certain scale.

It feels like every team eventually hits a wall where nobody has a 100% accurate picture of what's actually running, how services connect to each other (IAM, networking, dependencies), and why a specific resource was configured the way it was two years ago.

We have no shortage of tools-FinOps dashboards telling us we spend too much, CSPM scanners shouting about 5,000 "critical" alerts, and Terraform states that somehow drifted-yet the actual context seems scattered across dead Confluence pages, old Slack threads, or the memory of one senior engineer who is about to leave.

I'd love to hear how folks in the trenches are dealing with this:

1. The Context Gap: How do you currently map out "what connects to what" when an incident hits or when onboarding a new engineer?
2. Signal vs. Noise: Which tools actually give you meaningful context, and which ones just generate alert fatigue that your team ends up ignoring?
3. DIY Automations: Have you ended up writing custom scripts, Slack bots, or internal tools just to bridge the gap between your cloud config, security, and cost? What did you build?

TLDR:

I need to hire / contract a developer, and am looking for support to assess what type of profile / experience do I need to look for

My background:

Engineer, worked in consultancy for a number of years, then I started working in a pharmaceutical company. Not as a technician, but rather in a managerial position.

I have zero experience in software development (except for some basic Turbo Pascal course back then at uni, and an R course during my MBA), but I'm very structured in my thinking process, and the sheer amount of work I did as a consultant with large Excel models has given me a solid, basic understanding.

Current situation:

The expertise I've gained in the last couple of years in pharma has led me to think there's a gap I can address, by developing a particular software. This shall be an enterprise, B2B software, sold as a SaaS, and for which only a web app (hosted probably in Azure) makes sense, at least at the beginning.

I have the business expertise and know what the software must be able to do, and how.

I am of course starting to develop it on the side (I still have my job) with the help of AI - right now I'm creating the main architecture, using a modular backend in PostgreSQL, and am creating the first vertical slice to test the core of the system works (it does).

My intention is to bring the software to a decent pre-MVP status, and then hire someone with the right expertise to bring it to MVP, and who helps me install and customize whatever needed, once I get the first customers.

The timeline:

I plan to work on this side-project on my own until Sep-Oct, and then get some expert support.

I would set up a company and start the sales process by Q4 and I want to have the MVP by latest February.

The question:

Since I have not direct experience with software development, I don't know what type of profile do I need, nor where to look for such people.

I believe I need some senior profile, because the person needs to handle both backend and frontend improvements, testing the software, ensuring hosting in Azure is done properly with data security, and of course do the first couple of implementations (once I get the first customers) by him or herself. Of course, once proven the software is successful, we could grow the team.

Having the person physically in the city I live in (in Spain) would be preferable, to be able to work side-by-side in this critical launch phase.

• Any idea of the type of expertise I need to hire and where could I find it?
• Also, how much time in advance should I start searching? And what would be a normal salary expectation from a Spanish developer under these conditions?

So here is my context:

Graduating in 2026 from a Tier-2/3-ish college

Have around 1 year of internship experience at a small product-based startup

My experience is mainly in DevOps/Cloud

Have 1+ year of hands-on experience working with production systems

Got a PPO from the same company for 10 LPA

However, I'm not very happy with the work-life balance and the overall learning/exposure I'm getting in the startup environment, so I'm exploring other opportunities

I also feel that I have more potential and would like to work in an environment where I can get better exposure and learn from experienced engineers

For off-campus applications, I've mainly been using LinkedIn Jobs and Instahyre, but the number of relevant opportunities and responses has been very low

I've also tried platforms like Wellfound, Naukri, and others, but haven't had much success

I've worked on real production-level projects, so I'm confused about why I'm still struggling to get shortlisted for OAs/interviews

My main questions are:

Should I target service-based companies or product-based companies?

Should I focus on startups or medium-to-large companies?

Given my experience, should I apply mainly for DevOps/SRE/Cloud roles, or should I also target SDE roles?

Why is it so hard to get calls for OAs or interviews despite having 1+ year of actual production experience?

Is my college background still a major disadvantage for off-campus applications?

What am I missing? Is it my resume, the platforms I'm using, the roles I'm applying for, or something else?

I'm currently trying to figure out what would be the best career move at this stage. I already have a 10 LPA PPO, but I'm not sure whether I should stay, join a larger company, target product companies, or focus on improving my skills and try for better opportunities after gaining more experience.

The budget is almost enough that i can purchase

Macbook 2019 i9 32gb ram ddr4

Or

Thinkpad lenovo i9 11th gen 16gb ram ddr5

Or something that fits in that budget

But

Stuck in choosing the macbook or windows?
