START HERE

We're getting a sudden rush of new people, driven by TicTok who are mostly both new to Reddit as well as Cyberdecks.

I'm asking patience while we integrate these new people into the sub. New people bring new ideas, and will take things in new directions. Some of those directions will not be to your tastes, and that's fine. I imagine we'll see some 'fashion show' level builds that, while taken at face value are impractical, could inspire more down to earth designs to move in a new direction.

This is healthy for any creative community.

Be helpful, be polite, and let people do their thing. No one is ruining your dream deck by building their weird idea. If you see something you absolutely hate, but think 'How'd they do that hinge, though?', that's reason enough to be polite.

u/PETA_Parker sent me this, and it seems like a pretty good 'start here' guide:

ok, i've never built a cyberdeck myself but i have been lurking here for a long while, so i'll give you a quick rundown, a place to start so to speak. At the most basic you will need:

  • a "brain"
  • a screen
  • an input device
  • a power solution
  • a shell
  • an SD Card

Let's start with the brain: I only know about raspberry pis, the two budget options here would be a raspberry pi Zero 2, or any flavour of raspberry pi 3, the 4 and 5 are a bit more pricy. Zero 2 and 3b+ (the one i used) should both be enough for browsing, media playback and some light office work.

the Screen: the easiest option will be to go for an hdmi display such as this: 6,5/7/9/10,1 Zoll LCD Display Tragbare Monitor Treiber Control Board Kit Für Raspberry Banana/Orange Pi Mini Computer PC - AliExpress 7

It has an HDMI Output and powers over micro usb, so you can just connect the raspberry pi and the screen via hdmi. Any screen with hdmi input and usb power is an easy starting point.

the input device: for a keyboard you could go with something like this:

This is blutetooth and rechargable, i do not know if you could bypass the internal battery to power it directly because constantly needing to charge it would probably be cumbersome.

You could of course also use any regular keyboard and mouse combo that plugs in over usb. Another fun choice would be a trackball instead of a mouse.

the power solution: You could simply get a powerbank, but some of them cut off power delivery if the device connected draws a low current.

This is the part i'm least knowledgable about. Feel free to give me input.

the shell: Pretty much anything will do. You can build something out of cardboard, fit your components into an existing box or 3d-print a custom shell, your creativity is the limiting factor.

If you do not have a 3d-printer, you can make boxes out of styrene board, like this: Clean Enclosures, No Printing Necessary | Hackaday

Or you can search for "project box" on Aliexpress or Amazon

Now you just need to flash an operation system onto the raspberry pi (Raspbian is an all-purpose linux distro that is good for starters such as you), connect your screen to the power source and to the raspberry pi via HDMI, connect your (mouse and) keyboard to the raspberry pi and the raspberry pi to power, and you're ready to go.

I'll leave the thread up for a few weeks, and then we'll have a week to vote, and I'll count up the votes and put the winner in contact with XREAL. I just wanted to make sure a builder gets them.

My Build Currently working on building a Modular x86 Handheld PC running dual boot Linux & Windows - The CG Deck

Hello everyone! I have been working on this project for quite some time, building my own custom modular handheld console for gaming & everyday PC use, running dual boot Linux & Windows! I am currently working on the prototypes, so I thought it would be a great time to share an update of what I have been building with everyone here! It is called the CG Deck, an open-source and modular x86 handheld PC. Also, thank you so incredibly much to everyone that has been supporting and been a part of our community! You are all so amazing!

I have been working on a ton of polish & adjustments to the CG Deck, based on the testing I have been able to do over the past couple weeks! A few of the new additions and updates, include some improvements to the modules, adding a magnetic system to make it easier to connect and swap the various modules! A few new modules are also in the works, and I will have more information about those coming very soon! Along with that, I have also begun creating and concepting a few different carrying cases for the CG Deck and the various modules and accessories so I will be sharing those very soon. In addition to some announcements for the behind the scenes video going live soon! I will have a ton of information and updates coming out over the next couple of days to everyone on our waitlist so be sure to keep an eye our for that!

My initial goal was to create a small handheld PC that was entirely self contained and can be thrown in a backpack or back pants pocket (The entire device is 7.4" x 4.6" x 2.25"), with a high enough standard of hardware capable of being actually useful for things like high end retro emulation, CAD design/doing light modelling tasks in Blender, PCB design, coding, graphic design, music, video editing, and gaming with my steam library! Because it runs an x86 architecture, we get the advantage of being able to natively play steam games unlike a lot of other consoles. Because the CG Deck is based on an x86 architecture, you can run any OS that is supported, like the backlog of Windows, most Linux distro flavors, etc. For those that have multiple workflows, or need multiple devices, you can utilize the dual-boot functionality built into the CG Deck to make your life easier and keep it all under one shell.

I also wanted the CG Deck to be modular so it can be upgraded depending on how it is being used, and adapt the device depending on the workflow. For example, upgrading the memory with a full sized 2280 SSD, LTE/sim card support for work on the road, in addition to more cosmetically functional changes like swapping out the face/back plates to change the look, upgrading and swapping the HID control modules, antennas for extended connection range, etc. Every aspect can be upgraded, repaired, or customized as you need, without needing a degree in engineering to do so. I wanted to not just develop a device that would not just eventually turn into e-waste, but an ecosystem that can be updated and developed as time passes to keep the CG Deck relevant for much longer than the typical device lifespan. Something more attuned to a platform that grows with you rather than a traditional device.

The CG Deck will release with 5 total external modules (two slots, the primary and secondary slots), a variety of backplate designs and colors, and a variety of hardware and external accessories/upgrades. As for the modules, I currently have designed a full 64 Keyboard Module, 10 Key + Knob Macropad Module, Gamepad Controller Module all for the primary slot. For the secondary slot, there is only the trackball module at this time. The CG Deck also supports USB-A modules, so far including a 4K Low Low Light Flappable Camera Module. I wanted to make a device that grows with you as you use it, and can be adapted as your use cases change, and I have quite a few more modules planned for release once we officially launch!

As for the current state of the prototype for the CG Deck, I am overall really happy with it so far, but it still needs some work and I have quite a few changes to make as we prepare for the DFM process. Behold this little Rpi 5 based desktop deck with 4.3" touch display, 10,000mAh battery, and speakers!

I mostly built it as a static display for my solar power system but it's nifty as a writerdeck, too, not that I need one with all my JetDeck prototypes lying around (shameless plug <3)

The housing is pretty janky, I'm no good at CAD, but I'll pretty it up and maybe style it like a CRT monitor.

I plan to later do more with this, hence the speakers. It has an M.2 slot so I could add one of those LLM8850 accelerators and turn it into a local-hosted AI thing with STT and TTS running on it, connected to an uncensored Gemma4 or similar LLM running on my LAN. If it actually works well enough / responsively enough to be useful! I've not tried any of that yet.

Otherwise, once I get some IoT stuff worth setting it up for, I'll pop a touch UI for Home Assistant on it. I have a couple of Lifx bulbs and whole bunch of Tapo smart plugs I'd love to be able to control from a central web-based app.

I wanted to have a separate phone for wardriving and experimenting with pen testing. I also wanted a separate modular device that I can connect to public WiFi with a VPN. There is no SIM so it is not connected to any cell network. Since it’s not all self contained, I don’t know if it qualifies as a cyberdeck.

Help! Came up with an idea for a headless cyberdeck to help me inject preloaded ./adb commands and use as a dead wifi spot to repair shizuku...looking for advice on how to get started

So;

one button turns on or off the cyberdecks wifi (from what I understand shizuku can connect to a "dead" wifi connection to allow it to repair to the phone) .

One button that (when the phone is plugged into the device via usb) launches the ./adb devices (which ensures the phone port is open to accept ./adb commands).

And two or three buttons that are preloaded with ./adb scripts (so whatever I plan on working on, so like the kill tasker ./adb command etc).

And (if i cant get the ./adb commands to "auto send"(emulate a person pressing the enter key) a button that acts as the enter key. (So if you need to inject ./adb command button 1 you would press 1 and then press the enter/injection button).

Im totally new at this but I think a headless mobile terminal command injector would be helpful to me (example--when working on my tasker project I went on vacation and had an "ah ha" moment but couldn't work on it because i didnt have access to a PC to run the kill ./adb command if it went wrong---with this pocket device it would have been no issue).

So, I have to do some research but which pi should I look at for this? Or would and esp32 be doable? Any advice to help me get started.

edit here is a better formated way of describing what my thought is:.

Problem 1: when phone is rebooted shizuku must be paired with wifi to run an internal loop to re-initalize its port loop (can be done on a dead wi-fi spot).

Problem 2: certiain tasks in my phone, if malfunction, require the app to be killed using powershell / command line to restore full phone functionality (

Solve: a headless compact (pocket size) cyberdeck with dead wifi spot and preloaded command line codes with a usb hook up. Allows a pocket sized device to 1) broadcast a dead wifi spot for shizuku to connect to to run its loop and 2) allow the deck, via usb connection, so send the phone pre-loaded powershell / command line. (./adb shell am force-stop <package_name>).

This is a DefCon34 Maker Village in person workshop. In Las Vegas,NV you have to purchase tickets to the Con to join the workshop.

Cost is $180 for the workshop. All you need to bring is a laptop and a desire to improve your soldering skills. Everything you see is part of the workshop. From soldering the backplane to programming the micro sd card, to building modules for the built in TUI.

If you look closely at the PCB you'll notice a flipper compatible header! That's right bring your existing tools into a full Linux environment.

Documentation will be an open GitHub repo.

Missing? The 3d printed chassis. Still working on smallest package sizing with proper active cooling

My Build Modular ESP32-S3 Pocket Computer for Gaming, Music, and PDA Stuff (and maybe SSH)

Hi folks,

This is a project I've been working on since December 2024, so over a year and a half now.

It's a modular pocket device called Pocketbyte that is based on the ESP32-S3. The entire bottom half can be swapped out with different modules like a gamepad, a Blackberry-style keyboard, and even DIY modules.

I wanted to build a device that would allow me to do things like play games, listen to music, and take notes without getting distracted by my phone.

It's open source, so it can be customized in many different ways.

Some of the stuff it can run are:
- Retro emulation (up to SNES)
- Various game ports (Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, etc)
- Celeste (PICO-8 port)
- MP3 player app (it has a headphone jack btw, and yes it is stereo)
- Custom indie games (made using the C library, supporting various graphics backends)
- Text editor/note taking app that can sync to your computer

There's some cool stuff like an App Store that allows you to download programs via Wi-Fi! And with the Loader program, you pretty much will never even need a USB cable.

There are even more things I want to get it running in the future, like an SSH client so it can be used for portable admin stuff.

Help! Using macro boards for SBC?

Hello again all!

I posted about a month ago about my plans to build a deck with an old adding machine shell (linked here). My original plan involved just adding a holster for a folding keyboard, but I started thinking last night about integrating a limited set of keys for mobile use; something like 12 contextual keys and a row of four modifiers to add flexibility. I plan on using Linux Mint on a LattePanda IOTA (if they’re ever restocked) for the deck. My question is - would it be workable to program two macro boards to fill this mobile keyboard function, and would this reliably transfer from a standard computer to an SBC like the IOTA?

Help! Searching for a brain for my own cyberdeck

I want to make a cyberdeck that has a plenty of connectivity, but i'm struggling to find a suitable board, or rather I don't know where to look.

I want capabilities:

4x USB-B
2x USB-C
Ethernet
Wi-Fi
BLE/Bluetooth
1~2x Displayport (external monitor)
MiPi (CSI (camera) & DSI (on-board monitor))
on-board keyboard \1])
on-board trackpad/drawing tablet space
on-board Trackball \2])
Connectors for break-out pins of a MCU\1][3])

The Pi Compute 5 can support most of these ideal requirements, but has 2x HDMI, 1x USB-C and 2x USB-B.

Should I try and see if I can convert the HMDI to DisplayPort and create a sort of USB hub for the types of USB to have more inputs.

Or should I look for a board/design my own (how if you have idea's?) that can support these things? or should i lower my expectations

My Build First Cyberdeck Build

Took a while but I wanted something that

A) allowed me to screw around with breadboards and circuits

B) have something highly customizable/hackable

C) also function as a "productivity space" where I could just write stuff with no distractions

For more complex / text heavy tasks I have a separate Bluetooth keyboard. Surprisingly comfortable to use with the mini keyboard.

I'm not well versed in CAD so this was a bit of a challenge for me. I designed everything in Fusion for 3D printing. There are some design flaws to fix for v2 but overall I'm quite happy with the outcome.
