2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

Question ❔ Does anyone else have an insane amount of issues with the newer CRVs? Everything rattles.

In addition to the door rattling...the radio rattles, the dashboard rattles, the driver window rattles, the heater doesn't get remotely warm until it's turned to 84 (low-83 is basically all the same temp), the steering wheel makes a cranking noise when turning and whenever I press the gas pedal between 1.5-2 rpm it sounds like there's a cicada under the hood of my car.

2024 CR-V, bought brand new. Only 11,000 miles done in a little over two years. This is our third CR-V in 13 years and because of the endless issues I've had with this car, I will never buy a CR-V ever again.

Question ❔ How much will this roof rack affect my MPG on my 2014 CRV?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi guys, I just bought a 2014 Honda CR-V and it came installed with cross bars and a roof rack. I currently am averaging around 21.5 mpg since I got it, with a mix of city driving and highway driving, not terrible but a little low from what I expected and from what I've seen online. I drive pretty conservatively and I've only had this car for a few days, not sure how fast the MPG updates on the display. Got it checked at the mechanic and put in a new air filter as well.

How much will my MPG improve if I remove this roof rack? Ideally I'd like to keep the cross bars installed, but how much would my MPG improve if I removed those as well?

Issue ⚠️ Why is carplay on a brand new 2026 cr-v so, so, so bad???

Upvotes

It will just randomly disconnect, whether plugged in to the left USB-C port or wireless. iPhone 16 pro. The maps, Google, or Apple, will just freeze randomly, and eventually disconnect a few minutes later. It has happened many times when I’m on a busy highway with multiple exits near one another, one of which i have to take. But then it won’t allow my phone to fully disconnect so that I can just use the map on the phone! When I try to disconnect it, either from the Wi-Fi on the phone, or on the car itself, it will disconnect and then reconnect within 20 or 30 seconds. So I can’t just skip the CarPlay altogether. Truly a dangerous bug.

Brought it into the dealership, The tech said that they have had several such reported issues, and no solution for me. They did a reset of the Car’s computer and send me on my way. Did not fix the issue. Happens with other people‘s phones as well as mine. Honestly infuriating, And an insane issue to be having with a brand new car, especially when there is no option to go without these stupid screens that are in every new car nowadays.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to resolve it? I’m losing it over here.

PS the lack of two finger pinched to zoom on the maps apps in 2026 is also a crazy oversight. Navigating the maps, we’re trying to get an overview of the route, feels far more dangerous on CarPlay than just holding the phone. Really really wishing I had gone for a RAV4 instead, which seem to have none of these issues.

Issue ⚠️ Ac condenser fan issues

Hey guys. I replaced my compressor and condenser and properly pulled vacuum/filled Freon. My AC condenser fan turns on for about 1 second and shuts off. Is there a specific relay to check before pulling/replacing the fan? I don’t have access to my multimeter atm

Question ❔ carabiner trick

hey all, i have a 2014 cr-v and learned you can keep the trunk/hatch open for hours without the battery draining by putting a carabiner in the latch. I tried it, expecting the hatch light to shut off as evidence it was working. The light didn’t go off, so now I have a couple questions:

Is the light the only thing that drains the battery on a 2014 or does the computer also turn on with this model’s trunk open?(aka: if I just shut off the interior lights, can I leave the hatch open?)

Has anyone gotten this to work on a 2014 model?

We pick it up on Friday! Talking to the insurance company and I'm going to get the Tag tracking system installed next week. Does anyone have any experience with it? Have you had to use it? Was your vehicle recovered? They say it's a 90% recovery rate.

Question ❔ How dark is the OEM tint on the backseat/trunk windows for a gen 4 CRV?

Been debating just adding the same tint to the driver and passenger side windows so it all matches, but didn't know what tint percentage they were

Mods/Addons 🔦 07 CRV front strut replacement suggestions?

I have a 2007, 3rd generation CRV all-wheel-drive. One of my front struts is bad and was looking for a suggestions of what brand anybody else has gone with.
Right now I am looking at the KYB plus quick strut, which comes completely assembled and seems to bolt in much easier then having to diagnose specific parts and having to compress the spring to put it over the piston of bolts right in.
I cannot afford to do the full set right now, so I plan on doing the two fronts now and the rear in a few weeks.
I am reading good and bad things about the KYB plus. Most of the negative reviews seem to be before 2020 and not sure if maybe KYB has made any changes to make them better.

Also, I will need to consider pads and rotors in the next few months. If anybody has any suggestions or has had good or bad luck with any brand in particular, I would appreciate the information.
Any suggestions on quick struts or install installation problems or anything at all would help

Question ❔ Buying parts from another country

Hi all. I need a body part for my 2005 Honda CRV SE. And it has been discontinued from all the parts stores in the states. However, it shows available in a parts store in the UK and in Japan. I guess because these are out of the United States, it does not recognize my VIN when I enter it. As long as the part number is the same, should this part fit my car?

Issue ⚠️ Am I crazy here??

I have a 2024 Hybrid Sport and I noticed that the A/C is super weak sometimes. Weather here in VA is about 88 degree, I start the car, drive, hit the interstate and it’s almost like it’s barely coming out. When I take an exit or slowing down to 25-45mph it seems like it ramps back up and is normal… what gives? Anyone else? Cabin filter seems clean also. Recently replaced the blower fan because the factory one was going out. (It’s OEM)

Issue ⚠️ 2025 CRV - Chemical smell when using A/C

Anyone else smell chemicals when using their A/C? Last year, I smelled chemicals when using my A/C. Took it in several times and was mostly blown off.

Eventually, they discovered that the AC charge was low and supposedly fixed it. (I wonder if they were just placating me now.)

I'm having the same problem again this year.

I'm very worried because I don't want to be breathing this garbage all the time.

General 🔀 I miss the little boxes

My first car was a silver 1997 Honda CRV, my dad gifted it to me after driving it himself for about 5 years. He bought it at 280k kms for only 1500 CAD [insane I think even back in 2018, unicorn ass find, didnt have any noticeable problems for 6 more years] and I then drove it for 3ish years, and I recently had to retire ol Cleetus because his repairs needed added up to over 3k CAD and he was at 460k kms. He didnt owe us anything at that point, though I probably would have just paid for the repairs if he also didnt have extreme moisture and rust issues that made him basically undrivable in the winter [I live in a rainforest (not tropical)]. My dad bought Cleetus back and uses him for occasional dump runs or paddleboarding, so he's not fully gone, but I still miss him. I managed to find a brown 2011 crv with only 190k kms for 10k CAD so im not completely devastated, but I hate the way the CRV rounds out and gets bigger every gen. Does anyone else really hate that choice? It's not just CRVs either, it feels like every sporty little SUVs have just become big round mini van replacements. No hate to anyone who likes it, I just miss my box lol

Loving the new CRV though despite this, would only ever trade her for a gen1 or gen2 of the same condition. Named her Batsy because I feel like Cleetus and Betsy are in the same vain, and we've got both little and big brown bats where I live that I help count sometimes

Question ❔ Battery - EV keeps turning off

Ok. So I’ve had my CRV Trailsport Hybrid for 2 weeks now and I’m noticing that I can’t seem to figure out how to run the battery most of the time. I do city driving for my commute and it’s so inconsistent when it kicks on. Is there a trick? Right not I have it on econ and I use D.

Issue ⚠️ Possible vtc actuator rattle fix.

Alright, my profile is private but I've posted a few times over the years about battling the rattle. Short version is I bought a 2014, it rattled, I fixed it with a dorman actuator and it failed again right away. Then I used a Honda part and it still did it sometimes.

Used oil additive to thicken it up and it seemed to help but still happened occasionally. Did the key trick and that usually seemed to work.

But now,I stopped using oil additive and stopped the key trick and STARTED using valvoline restore and protect oil 5w30 for the past 2 oil changes and it hasn't done it.

It seems this oil may clean out the small oil passages based around a VVT system.

Not sponsored but it sure seems to be doing something. 212k miles.

Question ❔ 2026 crv hybrid awd Bike Rack Limitation Question - Do you ever carry 4 bikes at a time, (2 gravel, 2 ebike) total weight 150+lbs

Is anyone out there carrying bikes on your 2026 crv hybrid sport touring awd? I ask because we are considering replacing our 07 crv awd and sometimes carry 4 bikes on our hitch. It looks like this can be an issue due to the hitch weight limitations. I read about the sensor issue. I am more concerned about the weight/possibility. We want this to be our adventure car going forward into retirement and concerned about less space and hitch limitation. Pls let me know.....are you or have you carried 4 bikes successfully and if so, how? Thank you!!

Question ❔ 2011 Honda CRV EX Headlight Assembly Upgrade?

So, I bought LEDs to replace our halogen bulbs in our 2011 Honda CRV EX and quickly realized it was going to blind people, and that it was a hazard. Should’ve guessed that, but I didn’t know, I’m not a car guru.

That being said, are there headlight assemblies MEANT for a 2011 Honda CRV EX that are built for LED bulbs and will point the lights in the right direction without blinding people?

Our other car has really nice LEDs, but if we can’t have them in this one, then we won’t. It’s just harder to see and was hoping to fix that.

Thank you!
