Što kaže hrvatski pravopis? Je li prihvatljivo pisati dj umjesto đ?

Hello everyone, I'm half Croatian, half German. I used to visit my grandma a lot when I was a kid but somehow never ended up learning Croatian besides the basics. And until now I couldn't start learning properly because I recently graduated and before that I had French classes and I didn't wanna have to learn two languages at once.

So, are there any good tips on how to learn Croatian on a good conversational level? I got some apps for vocab and some basic sentence structure, but I wanna get a good hang the grammar too and I haven't seen any app that offers a good insight.

It sucks that there aren't really any Croatian dubs of my favourite shows out there, but if anyone knows a well dubbed movie or show and where to watch them, that would help me greatly. Or books at an easier level.

I know this question gets asked fairly often here, but I only saw mediums like YouTube or language apps mentioned.

I'd appreciate any tip!

Učim hrvatski gotovo 2 godine. Počeo sam čitati knjige jer je to, po mom mišljenju, dobar način da poboljšam svoje znanje jezika.

Već sam pročitao: Dobri duh Zagreba (krimić, kratke priče), i Crvenu Vodu (baš depresivna knjiga joj), i mogao sam pratiti radnju bez problema, iako još uvijek nailazim na neke nepoznate riječi.

Šta mi možete preporučiti? Radije bih čitao nešto relativno moderno, napisano standardnim jezikom.

I am learning croatian and I'm curious if I were to travel around the Balkan states if people from Serbia or Montenegro would understand me? Are the languages in this region similar?

Hi, all! New to this subreddit. I’ve completed Pimsleur’s level I Croatian (loved it!) and looking for other apps to continue the journey. I stumbled across Našio.app on Instagram and completed the free courses. I now have the decision of whether to purchase the “pro” version for many more lessons. It seems legit so far - a bit glitchy, but legit. Anyone have experience with it, specifically the paid version?

I humbly ask for translation and pronunciation help with a quick blessing for my dear friend's wedding. I don't speak croatian unfortunately, but I would love her to hear her mother language (even if spoken novicely) since she lives in another country.

So far I have used a translator app to give me the following:

Bok! I’m very upset at myself. I study croatian at my university in the USA and decided to give Croaticum a shot. I took the placement test and was very honest on my skill level, and asked to be in an A2 class because I know a basic amount of Croatian. Well, I guess they did not offer an A2 course. I was placed in a B1 course and I am doing horribly. I have learned the grammar previously but it’s just not sticking to me. And to be completely honest, I have not been studying as much as I should have the last three weeks. The speaking for me is even harder. I can form basic sentences and somewhat explain situations but not at the same level as everyone else in my class.

I feel like I was placed in the wrong level, and probably should have said something earlier, but now it’s too late. Tomorrow I take my final exam and friday I have to do a 5-7 minute presentation. I feel like I’m just going to embarrass myself these next 2 days. I have thought about not even showing up, but I want to try. It’s too late for me to really study anything but I just wanted to vent. I wish I lied and said I was a new learner and got placed into the A1 class.

Update: I took the test, it was hard, but not as hard as I thought. I definitely messed up the grammatical cases section, but at least I know where I’m at in my language learning, I will update with the score tomorrow. I also have to give my presentation tomorrow.

Update part 2: I did my presentation and it went a lot better than I thought. She will send our final certificates soon if we passed. I think I passed. My tests scores were above 60% for all sections. I’m not sure what is considered passing

Final update/part 3: I PASSED! Omg I guess I was just so nervous I didn’t realize how much I actually knew. I think the teacher also might’ve graded lightly but thats just my imposter syndrome haha. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and advice. I do recommend Croaticum, but I wouldn’t go past an A1 course unless you truly think you are comfortable at a B1 level.

Good morning everyone, I would like to start learning Croatian. I heard it quite often during my university studies, but I never actually learned it. I have focused on the history of Yugoslavia and the figure of Tito in particular, but I have often come across sources in Serbo-Croatian that I couldn't read. Could you recommend any online courses (preferably free) or some PDFs to get started? If possible, I would prefer resources that teach Croatian through Italian. Thanks in advance!

Evo me opet, vraćam se s još 5 pitanja. Prošli put sam dobila bezbroj sjajnih odgovora i stvarno sam vam zahvalna. Evo pitanja:

1. Ponekad primjećujem kako u rečenicama glagoli biti i htjeti s negacijom dolaze na kraju. Na primjer, Tražila sam savjet, dobila ga nisam. Što točno znači ovakva inverzija? Je li nešto ekspresivno, poetično ili razgovorno?
2. Jesu li forme infinitiva bez -i na kraju tipične samo za hrvatski (razgovorni) jezik (Kao u Moram ga pitat. ili Idem spavat.) ili se ista stvar pojavljuje i u ostalim regionalnim varijacijama, na primjer u srpskom? 
3. Kako se koristi čestica tik? Može li se reći tik u zadnji trenutak (se nešto dogodilo)? Ili blizina mora biti fizička, kao u tik do mene?
4. Koji je uzvik bolji za situaciju u kojoj je netko imao lošu sreću u sitnim stvarima, jao ili joj? Ili nešto treće? Na primjer, kad je netko propustio bus i sada mora dugo čekati sljedeći. Što da kažem?
5. Da li dobro shvaćam da je glagol sezati nepovratni, a protegnuti (se) povratni u ovom značenju? Povijest grada seže u srednji vijek i Šume se protežu do mora. Je li onda točno da glagol protegnuti (se) češće ima doslovno, fizičko značenje, dok se sezati obično koristi s nematerijalnim stvarima? Može li se reći obrnuto, Povijest grada se proteže u srednji vijek i Šume sežu do mora?

Pozdrav ekipa, pisem diplomski rad gdje analiziram greske koje ljudi koji su govornici drugog jezika rade greske pri koristenju hrvatskog jezika.

Sad dolazim do problema jer (skoro) nitko ne govori zapravo standardnim jezikom pa je tesko odrediti sto je tocno, a sto netocno. Kako biste vi odredili govori li netko pravilno ili ne, osim po kriteriju "zvuci mi dobro"?

Naravno konzultirati cu se s mentorom, ali mozda dobijem ovdje koju korisnu ideju pa ako netko ima savjet slobodno pucajte.

I’m trying to understand the difference between donekle, ukoliko, and unekoliko — especially the last two.

My current understanding is that donekle means something like “somewhat / partly / to some extent,” and I just wanted to see if these examples sound right/natural to you guys.

• Donekle se slažem. — I somewhat agree.
• To je donekle točno. — That is somewhat true.
• Donekle mi je jasno. — It’s somewhat clear to me.
• Donekle si u pravu. — You’re right up to a point.
• To donekle objašnjava situaciju. — That partly explains the situation.
• Film mi se donekle svidio. — I somewhat liked the movie.
• Problem je donekle riješen. — The problem has been partly solved.
• Ovo je donekle slično hrvatskom. — This is somewhat similar to Croatian.
• Donekle je teško objasniti. — It’s somewhat hard to explain.
• Slažem se, ali samo donekle. — I agree, but only up to a point.
• Njegov odgovor je donekle nejasan. — His answer is somewhat unclear.

I also have do neke mjere as a more transparent equivalent:

• Do neke mjere se slažem. - To some extent I agree.
• Do neke mjere si u pravu. - To some extent you are right.
• To je do neke mjere točno. - That is to some extent correct.
• Razumijem ga do neke mjere. - I understand him to some extent.
• Problem je riješen do neke mjere. - The problem has been solved to some extent.
• Do neke mjere mi je jasno što želi reći. - To some extent it is clear to me what he wants to say.

Regarding that, I wanted to ask if a literal translation of "to a certain extent" in English could be rendered in Croatian? I.e. "do određene mjere."

But I’m confused about ukoliko vs. unekoliko.

From what I can tell, ukoliko usually means something like “if / insofar as / to the extent that,” while unekoliko seems to mean “somewhat / to some extent,” but maybe in a more formal, literary, or old-fashioned way. Is that right? Or is it regional and informal?

For example, do these unekoliko sentences sound natural in Croatian, or are they too formal/unnatural?

• Unekoliko se slažem s tobom. - I somewhat agree with you.
• To je unekoliko točno. - That is somewhat true.
• Njegov odgovor je unekoliko nejasan. - His answer is somewhat unclear.
• Situacija se unekoliko popravila. - The situation was somewhat improved.
• Ovo unekoliko podsjeća na stari sustav. - This somewhat resembles the old system.
• Unekоliko razumijem njegovu odluku. - I somewhat understand his decision.

Foreigner living in Zagreb for 4 months now, even if my croatian learning is going pretty well, I'm still unsure about what to say when I give money to cashier/caffe waiter or anyone

I use "Evo" but not sure if it is considered rude or not

Other than Evo or Evo vam (what's the difference?) I can use Izvolite right? Isn't it too formal?

Dobar dan. Nadam se da ovo nije protiv pravila subreddita, no treba mi još nekoliko govornika s područja Zagreba/Velike Gorice da popuni anketu za rad koji izrađujem za rektorovu nagradu. Ako imate vremena, pomoglo bi mi da je riješite. Riječ je o načinu na koji se imenice koje završavaju na -o ili -e, a posuđenice su, orođuju u hrvatskome. Primijetio sam da postoji definitivno velika razlika među govornicima, a sada pokušavam otkriti postoji li i geografska razlika. U anketi postoji dio s pravim riječima, dio s izmišljenim riječima i dio s provjerom rečenica iz korpusa.
