This is my first year doing it. It's so exciting and also, as I see it, an amazing way to introduce many people to films and directors that are different from what they're used to.

I believe there should exist a 53rd category, though. A category for that movie you've been painfully ruling out time and time again in various categories and that, in the end and to your great regret, ends up being left out. House (1977) by Ôbayashi was that one for me.

I mean, I will watch it asap tbh. But it truly deserved to be there.

I’ve been collecting since the last July sale. Based off of my current collection, any recommendations would be appreciated. My local B&N doesn’t have the biggest selection, but I’m more than willing to go and see (and buy). Thanks in advance!

Just got a good 4k player and was excited to see what dv does to a b&w movie, but I just realized I don’t have any!

According to They Shoot Pictures, Pulp Fiction is ranked the #4 best movie of the ‘90s, ahead of Satantango and below Goodfellas, Beau Travail, and Close-Up. I’m a little surprised that Goodfellas ranks above it. Tarantino’s film completely reinvented the crime genre, and everything today, for better or worse, is meta, ironic, retro, and postmodern because of this one movie, from movies to video games to Internet memes. As one critic put it, nobody would be caught dead wearing retro clothes or listening to old music before Pulp Fiction made it cool. We really underestimate the influence of this movie. But I’m wondering why does the conventional Goodfellas rank above the unconventional, French New Wave, postmodern atomic bomb that is Pulp Fiction. This movie was like Breathless in terms of changing the guard. I know everything today is meta and postmodern, so young people think it’s always been like this, but really it all starts right here. The only reason you listen to Fleetwood Mac or whatever is because this movie kinda made it cool

I recently came across this film in the collection, by Alfred Hitchcock (one of his lesser known films)

Hi, guys! I’ve been planning to buy this while the sale is still ongoing. However, I wanted to ask: do you think it’s likely that each film will get an individual 4K release anytime soon? Thanks!

I absolutely love the film. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous and the characters are all amazing! I really love Travis’s monologue during the 2nd booth scene. Only problem I have with this film was that I didn’t really get emotional 🥲

A stack of 4ks and a couple blu rays. About half of these were from the B&N sale. The others were purchases from MediaSwap and ebay.

1. First movie I plan to watch is probably The Blade or maybe Night Moves.

2. Hud on 4k is something I've been looking forward too. One of my all time favorite films. I have an original 1-sheet.

3. Blind buys are Classe Tous Risques and The Blade.

4. I still need to pick up Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

I had a few before the sale like House and Ghost Dog but Barnes and Noble cheers when they see me come in. Excited most for Wings of Desire and Mishima.

I want to watch this movie but its not on streaming services and criterion only has a dvd

1. ⁠It depends on how I feel tomorrow, but either Seven Samurai or Harakiri. I was blown away by Kwaidan last weekend, so I’m leaning towards Harakiri.

2. ⁠I’ve been wanting to get the 4k of Seven Samurai for a while, and I’m really excited about Chungking Express.

3. ⁠All blind buys except Pan’s Labyrinth, which I haven’t seen since it first came out.

4. ⁠I definitely want more Del Toro, and I’d love to do some research and branch out into international film outside of Japan/Korea/Hong Kong.

Since I just graduated high school 2 months ago, my money has been almost entirely spent on buying criterion. Not to say I'm going broke or anything, but it's just all I've been buying. It's my crack. I can think of worse addictions to have. Nevertheless, I need to tone it down. I will only have one (after this), final pickup for this month. Thank you.

1. Naked Lunch, I've seen videodrome and the fly but this looks to be even cooler.

Night of The Hunter and Ghost Dog

1. ⁠I plan on watching Isle of Dog first while I read all the supplemental materials.
   
2. ⁠Come and See has always had mythological status to me; it’s always been out of reach for me but I’m well aware of the subject matter.
   
3. ⁠House was a total blind buy.
   
4. ⁠I was looking for Paths of Glory and Ride with the Devil but I think it’ll need to be an online purchase.

This time around I let the fate of in-store inventory help me choose what to pick up. I got the last 4K of Hud that they had. Also, I didn’t realize the color schemes of the covers paired up well.

This is a semi-blind buy haul. Although I have seen The Man Who Wasn’t There and Hud before, it has been at least twenty years since I have seen either so I only remember that I liked them then.

1. Body Heat will be the first one I watch. I also just got Falling Down so the two of those seem like appropriately sweaty summer movies.

2. I am especially excited to see Hud again, this time in 4K. I remember being impressed with the DVD years ago so I imagine it would look a great deal better now.

3. Peeping Tom and Body Heat are both blind buys. I have heard good things about the cinematography in Peeping Tom and Body Heat gets a lot of praise.

4. Lone Star and Lost Highway are both on my short list to pick up next time. My local B&N was out of stock of both 4Ks.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Man Who Wasn't There, The Blade, and John Singleton's Hood Trilogy all on 4K. The rest are Blu-rays.

1. What is the first movie you plan to watch from your purchase and why?

I actually already watched one movie from this purchase with my wife and some friends last night; Defending Your Life. I got it because so many people recommended it in the Closet videos and we chose it from a stack of 5 possible films because it seemed like the most fun and none of us had seen it. We all really loved the film. This morning I watched all the supplements and read the included essay (written by Ari Aster crazily enough).

2. Is there anything from this purchase that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time?

A bunch of stuff actually. I really wanted John Singleton's Hood Trilogy as soon as it was announced but on my last haul trip they didn't have it on 4K so I waited. Defending Your Life and Paris is Burning are two I have wanted for some time. Resurrection I saw on the Channel a couple months ago and immediately knew I needed to have a physical copy. The Man Who Wasn't There I rewatched last fall for Noirvember. It was a dvd copy so the images, while still beautiful, were not the best quality. As soon as they announced a 4K restoration I knew I had to get it just to see Deakins' cinematography in all its glory.

3. Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?

I'd say Last Hurrah for Chivalry, Eastern Condors, and The Blade are somewhat blind buys. I know the vibes of each movie but not much about the plot. I was in the mood for Asian action cinema after The Furious. I also heard someone mention Certain Women recently so I picked that up but I don't know much besides that it follows different storylines that connect thematically and the leads are all top tier.

4. What is a Criterion you're hoping to add to your collection next?

I am now set on getting and watching the other Al Brooks entries in the collection. I already own Broadcast News but haven't watched it. I'd like to start with Real Life. I keep a long, somewhat organized running list of the Criterions I'd like to get. At the top is World Cinema Project Vol. 4, which would complete my collection, and Jackie Chan: Emergence of a Superstar. Of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong cinema, I've only seen the Police Story films because I own the Criterions. To say they changed my life is an understatement so I need to get some of his other early works. Also eyeing The Red Shoes 4K, The Elephant Man 4K, Arsenic and Old Lace, Buck and the Preacher, Harlan County USA 4K, Welcome II the Terrordome, and, of course, The Complete Kubrick.

This may have been pointed out already, but I have just noticed, despite his gameable “connections,” Kevin Bacon is in none of the numbered Criterion films.

Started collecting Criterion about 3 years ago, beginning with David Lynch. This is the first time I’ve been able to take advantage of any sales! (I know The Fly isn’t criterion but I couldn’t pass it
up being on sale for only $8.99 on B&N)

1. The first movie i plan on watching from my haul is the master filmmaker Ken Russell’s Altered States. I have owned it on standard blu-ray for forever and am stoked to be able to finally see it in all of its 4K glory.

2. I have been looking forward to owning Life of Brian for years now. I’ve always been a huge python fan and now my collection of their films is finally complete!

3. Seven Samurai, Killers of the Flower Moon, Eyes Wide Shut, & Resurrection are all blind buys. I chose these blind buys because i love Kurosawa, Scorsese, & Kubrick and these are three of their films that i have yet to see but have been looking forward to. Resurrection just looked cool as hell and the premise sounded right up my alley.

4. A Criterion that i am most looking forward to adding to my collection next is Trainspotting along with The Man Who Wasn’t There.
