NIC Housing

Has anyone had experience living at the new housing at NIC?

What’s it like and the student community?

Also are the units somewhat sound proof?

Does anyone in the Comox Valley that goes hiking have a Garmin Inreach Mini 3 plus or Garmin GPSMapH1iplus?

Just want feedback on both. Do the maps from your iPhone sync well with the Inreach? Or does the GPSMap include local maps from Vancouver Island or are they easily accessible? I’m mainly looking for breadcrumb tracking so an iPhone is not good enough.

Anyone flying to Calgary on Monday and can take a letter sized present?

I thought that I had until August 21 to get a present sent but of course I just learned that the birthday is July 21.

It's a handmade patch for my SIL. I can meet you at the Comox airport and she will meet you at the Calgary airport (or mutually convienent loction) with a gift of your choice (a 30$ value!).

It fits in a standard envelope and is not drugs. You are welcome to do an inspection prior to taking it.

DM me if you are flying out Monday or Tuesday morn. My summer brain thanks you!

Out in the Park

Our Queer film Out in the Park tonight is Disclosure. This documentary picks up where The Celluloid Closet ends and talks about trans representation. It also touches base on the awkward questions the queer community gets asked, especially our trans community.

Join us in the park at the tennis courts in Lewis Park at sunset, 9:18pm. If its raining we will set up at the covered stage behind the tennis courts.

https://youtu.be/ysbX6JUlaEc?si=jiCGNuwRQqqs_Z1V

Film runs about 108 minutes

Bring a chair, pillow, and blanket along with some friends. Make yourself comfy and settle in for some amazing queer representation in film.

I'm looking forward to seeing you out there.

If this event is your kind of tea, here is your alert! And if nothing else, the gardens are really nice to walk around.

Rooster needs a home!

(Reposted from van island sub)

One of our chicks has turned out to be a rooster, and unfortunately we're not able to keep him here in our neighbourhood once he starts crowing.

He's a very sweet and friendly murray mcMurray Easter egger cockerel (juvenile rooster), hatched mid-May, has beard and muffs, and is very handleable and tame!

He grew very quickly, is an excellent forager and enjoyer of treats. Has not picked any fights with the hens, does express some dominance with them, so far not towards humans at all.

We've grown very attached to this fine young gentleman, and it would mean the world to us if we can get him to a new home where he's able to live safely and happily long-term.

We're in Nanaimo, but are happy to make arrangements to transport him anywhere. Comment or DM if you're interested in adopting!

seems like comox council doesn’t care at all about what they’ve done to the rural neighbourhood that exists just outside of the municipal boundary adjacent to this mega development. if you can build a development this big (quoted to be the population of Ucluelet), cut down an endangered forest ecosystem and destroy wetland areas, and then make the bold claim its not cost effective to include a single affordable unit, then this council isn’t working for the community and they are fools. absolutely pitiful outcome in the name of creating housing.

What nicknames have you heard for places in or around Comox Valley?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like Cumbie, Slowmox or Mt. Washout (never mind how common they are)...

Religiousity in area?

Hello! I’m a Canadian living in the USA but looking to return to BC in a couple of years. I miss a lot of things about Canada, and am tired of the politics, religious right, and expensive healthcare in USA. Is there a large presence of evangelical types in this area? Another thing I’m tired of after living around it shoved in my face for so many years. Maybe I should stick to a larger city but I really like the Comox valley for the outdoor activities. Any advice for an agnostic? Thanks!

Newly moved to Courtenay/Comox! WFH and looking to make some local friends

Hey everyone! I (33F) just moved to Courtenay about two weeks ago. I work from home, which makes it a little tough to make friends. I’m really looking to meet some people to hang out with and explore the area. A few things I enjoy are hiking, going for walks, dancing, watching movies, and grabbing a coffee or a drink.

If you have any must visit suggestions for a newcomer, I’m all ears! Also please feel free to send me a DM if you'd like to chat or hang out sometime.

What Does the Valley Need?

Hey y’all. I’m playing around with the idea of starting a business in the Valley, and I have a few ideas, but would love to get some input on what people think is needed.

Please share what you think would be a needed/helpful addition to the community (and I’m not talking about restaurants). Thank you!

From the article:

The ministry says the southern coast and southern Interior remain under significant pressure as drought conditions persist and parts of Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the southern Interior have shown record-low stream flows. It says watersheds where risks to aquatic ecosystems and fish populations are increasing include the Koksilah River, Tsolum River, Salmon River and Bessette Creek.

Where to get a Naloxone kit

Title says it all. I just moved to the Valley. I work graveyards, and on my route to work, I encounter a lot of users.

Please, no judgment. I just want to be able to help someone if I come across someone in need.

Looking for recommendations for a home inspector in the Comox Valley

We’re looking at doing some renovations to an older home that’s in the family and would like to have it professionally inspected first. We’re looking for someone who is thorough and can identify structural, electrical, plumbing, moisture, insulation, or any other potential issues that should be addressed first.
If you’ve had a great experience with a local home inspector (or know of anyone to avoid), I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks!

Home support workers of comox valley

hey all, I have not been seeing any job postings for community support workers lately. I am a registered hca and employed with the health authority so the idea is to transfer to a different position.

What is work like in comox valley for care aids/home support workers. Is home support usually fully staffed and not hiring?

What is the worst part about living in Comox Valley? It could by city/town specific or the entire valley. Difficulty: you can’t mention the ferry/travelling to the mainland
