It Glows - Gator Days

Characters

Gustopher - Alligator - An easily excitable boy who loves making friends. August's son.

Hannah - Goat - A highly competitive kid. She strives to be the best and to be helpful to others. Daryl and Seth's daughter.

Liam - Capybara - A quiet and introspective boy. He enjoys writing and learning about things. Ember's older brother.

Transcript

Panel 1

Gustopher is showing off his new shirt to his friends. It has a big smiling face that's supposed to glow in the dark. Its eyes stare into your soul and the knowing smile reflects the terrible terrible secrets that it's learning about about you.

Gustopher: Check out my new shirt. It glows in the dark.

Panel 2

Gustopher and his friends have moved to the bathroom so they can turn off the lights and get a proper look at the shirt in the dark. The shirt continues to smile, it mocks the tragedy of the world with its perpetual grin.

Hannah: Is it bright?

Gustopher: Let's find out?

Panel 3

The lights are off. Everyone looks down at the shirt so they might witness its brilliant glow. It is glowing, but it's faint and hard to see. The shirt continues to smile. It has witnessed the secrets of the universe and must smile to hide its sorrow.

Panel 4

Liam: Is it doing anything?

Gustopher: Just ruining my day.

The shirt is satisfied with this series of events. Every disappointed child is one step closer to the glowpocolypse. The shirt smiles at the thought of that glorious day of glowmageddon.

Its eyes stare into your soul and the knowing smile reflects the terrible terrible secrets that it's learning about about you.

Now that you mention it...kinda weirded out

The shirt continues to smile, it mocks the tragedy of the world with its perpetual grin.

At least it didn't change. That would be more concerning

The shirt continues to smile. It has witnessed the secrets of the universe and must smile to hide its sorrow

The shirt is an absolute rollercoaster of emotions and I have no idea how to feel

The shirt smiles at the thought of that glorious day of glowmageddon.

I for one welcome out new glowy overlord

Please don't turn out the lights

5

u/K4G3N4R4 1h ago

Dammit, now i want a glow in the dark shirt that looks like Gus's in the sun, and creepy in the dark.

u/hypnogoad 2h ago

The shirt is satisfied with this series of events. Every disappointed child is one step closer to the glowpocolypse. The shirt smiles at the thought of that glorious day of glowmageddon.

Fifth panel: August walks in with a UV flashlight and charges the shirt. It now glows with the intensity of 1000 suns.

10

u/Orkran 2h ago

Maybe the shirt hungers for a rave to unleash it's full glory

3

u/rillip 2h ago

The day you turn glowmageddon into a reality within the strip and not a throw away gag is the day I subscribe to your patreon.

3

u/RocknRollPewPew 1h ago

I feel like Gustopher has had a pretty rough month of learning important life lessons. Thankfully he's very mature and takes them in stride

u/Lexi_Banner 59m ago

The shirt continues to smile. It has witnessed the secrets of the universe and must smile to hide its sorrow.

Yes, waiter, one serving of existential dread, please!

I love these write-ups as much as I love the comics themselves.

u/oy_oy_nametaken_2 51m ago

I wouldn't think this is a transcript for that comic if I didnt know

Shoulda gone with a nice new pair of light up sneakers Gus. Those things can be seen from space.

Nothing more disappointing than something you were excited about just ...not working out. It's almost as if that smile on that shirt is mocking the group

48

u/rillip 1h ago

Do you remember Air Jordans? We all thought we were gonna fly after we pumped them up. Such a let down.

18

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 1h ago

I remember squeezing mine till it burst

I saved up so much allowance for those things

7

u/Dr_Jabroski 1h ago

So you got all pumped up for nothing?

6

u/LoreChief 1h ago

Tried light up shoes like 3 times, the batteries only lasted like 2 days of kid walking

Those shoes with the metallic goop pockets were cool though.

3

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 1h ago

Hey at least they work. Poor Gus here got ripped off

u/CmonLucky2021 57m ago

Whaat? Here in Europe they just worked. For years. Only activated on when you stomped your feet though... Is it that time and what customer protections do your country have, because that sounds like the shops problem... From every day normal use everything should be intended to be working for a product for a year and it should be on their dime that it gets repaired anytime it doesn't work

7

u/berlinbaer 1h ago

Nothing more disappointing than something you were excited about just ...not working out.

we've all been sea monkeyd before.

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 1h ago

Ahhhhh the great con of my childhood. How I still am upset those did not do what I was told they would

Though I'll be fair and say I didn't have a decent realistic idea what they would do

186

u/Digit00l 2h ago

Glow in the dark is fairly disappointing

122

u/The_Oliverse 2h ago

Once they removed the radium, it really never hit the same :(

3

u/agedlikesage 1h ago

What are you thinking of? They stopped using radium in the 60s

53

u/The_Oliverse 1h ago

Yes, I am making a history joke :)

23

u/Azealas 1h ago

They did say it was removed

6

u/YesterdayAlone2553 1h ago

A Florida Man in the 90's made a homemade atomic bomb with paint scrapings from clocks and old chemistry kits specifically because he couldn't do it with the newer stuff.

I'm thinking it was removed.

u/pandakatie 27m ago

A Florida boy scout!

u/pseudo_deja_pris 26m ago

It was not a bomb, it was a nuclear reactor.

u/bobmailer 25m ago

Radium cannot sustain a chain reaction because it isn't fissile. You would need to split about 31 billion atoms every second just to power a tiny 1-watt LED bulb. Chain reactions are important for bombs.

u/HallowskulledHorror 53m ago

Depends on the quality/brand.

I got a glow-in-the-dark skeleton-print apron at Joann's a few years ago, and that mf is BRIGHT. I'll be painting or doing something in the kitchen, step outside for a moment (say, to take trash to the dumpster) and then upon stepping back inside from sunlight to a more 'comfortable low-light' indoors environment, be reminded that indeed yes my silly skeleton apron GLOWS.

I also got some of the culture-hustle glow powder for mixing with pigment, and similarly, that shit puts out some LIGHT when it's charged. I like to mix it with clear acrylic and apply it to patches and such to hide secret glow messages or features (eg, light-up eyes).

u/vanderZwan 12m ago

Yeah, my partner's mom bought a pyjama for our daughter without realizing it was glow-in-the-dark, and it's crazy how bright it is. Makes it easy to spot her at night though!

Similarly my sister got us a really big set of glow-in-the-dark stars that included a giant moon, and if I hold a book close to it when it's "fully charged" I can actually read it, and I've woken up a few times at 3 AM with the stars still mildly glowing.

u/GitEmSteveDave 54m ago

I blame the sun for being lazy.

u/Quiet-Software-1956 39m ago

Unless you forget the shirt does that and only remember when you stumble in the bathroom with the lights off and get fucking jumoscared looking in the mirror

u/Digit00l 19m ago

I do have a full collection of the Nintendo Pikmin plushies, one of them glows in the dark, and since the live in my bed, it has startled me in the middle of the night

87

u/Bronze_Sentry 2h ago

Ah, the near-universal childhood experience of testing glow-in-the-dark stuff in a bathroom

73

u/TravelerSearcher 2h ago

Man I never had a glow in the dark shirt, those always seemed so cool.

I did have one that changed colors with temperature. But it only really worked when I forcibly exhaled hot air directly onto my sleeve and was not very satisfying.

90s gimmick clothing was weird.

7

u/TravelerSearcher 1h ago

OMG! You made my day, thank you Field!

3

u/CrashmanX 1h ago

Well now he looks like the Purple Power Ranger.

https://giphy.com/gifs/t6f2bNAjx7Bio

u/Stevenwave 12m ago

The White Power Ranger was never into the colour changing technology for some reason.

5

u/Evepaul 1h ago

Glow in the dark tshirts are cool until you wash them a few times and the next time you want to show it to people it doesn't glow anymore. I had a super cool HTTYD one where it's the black dragon during the day and the white dragon appears in front of him at night, but now he's alone all the time 🙁

11

u/Jayjayrod95 2h ago

The only shirt you've drawn that I don't want

12

u/Drakoonite 1h ago

He forgot the important first step of hugging a lamp for five minutes

4

u/BearWithHat 1h ago

Yup, or a flashlight

u/Overly_Long_Reviews 27m ago

A UV flashlight will charge up glow in the dark in record time. I actually carry a small rechargeable UV light in my work kit so I can charge up the glow in the dark markers I used to identify equipment or as administrative lights. I use them a lot on zipper pulls.

I usually don't need it, sunlight exposure is usually pretty effective, but it can still be handy if a marker was in a pouch all day. The UV flashlight is also incredibly small, keychain sized, and topping up a glow marker uses a minimal amount of power. It's much less disruptive and more power efficient then to using one of my high candela or high lumen lights for the same purpose.

u/ingrimsch95 2h ago

I had a inverse moment once as a teenager. Bought a shirt because it had a sick ass skeleton and was pleasantly surprised when I once wore it in the dark a couple months later and the skeleton was glowing

6

u/Ebony_Phoenix 2h ago

Back in my day they used radium! Yea I had chest pains since I was 12 why do you ask?

5

u/jayvenomva 1h ago

Get that boy a blacklight! Blacklights super charge glow in the dark things!

1

u/lego69lego 1h ago

Glow in the dark stuff never worked for me but blacklight was awesome.

5

u/neesters 1h ago

You gotta put it up to a light source and let it absorb some of it first. Then it will really glow.

4

u/Jiirsu 2h ago

Well it kinds glows.

3

u/Dagawing 1h ago

Change that g for a b and you got it 😄

4

u/82ndGameHead 1h ago

No matter how old you are or what generation you're in, the glow is never as bright as you want it to be.

u/Atalant 46m ago

Don't worry Gustopher, my glow in dark Zippo lighter glows so brightly I swear you can see it from the sun, by night. Glow-in-dark is still awesome, not matter age. I miss those glow in dark ceiling stars from my childhood.

3

u/epzik8 2h ago

This was every glow in the dark device I had as a kid

2

u/ForgetfulViking 2h ago

Maybe its solar powered?

2

u/Flem1000 2h ago

And look how happy the smiley is while doing it!

2

u/64OunceCoffee 2h ago

Please join us for our next Gator Days comic, "Gustopher gets a blacklight"

2

u/Noideawhatimdoing36 1h ago

I had a pair of light up sneakers as a kid that actually caused the opposite issue. In normal light they were super fun but in the dark they were a straight up epilepsy risk, so if the lights ever turned off in my class I’d have to walk like I was creeping through a minefield lol

2

u/Ildrei 1h ago

I didn’t clock that they moved to the bathroom and I thought he just literally turned off the sun

2

u/CodingNightmares 1h ago

I'm now having memories of those plastic glow in the dark stars and planets you used to stick to your ceiling as a kid

2

u/HamCatX3 1h ago

I love glow in the dark stuff!! The key is having a black light to super charge it X3

2

u/Mama_Lyra 1h ago

my hello kitty sweater i got claims to be glow in the dark but the only thing that glows on it is the hello kitty text. none of the characters, just the damn text

u/Coveinant 49m ago

Glow in the dark stuff takes hours to charge up enough to actually glow (about 3-4 minimum). It's kind of funny, I wore one a couple months ago, had completely forgotten it glows only to be surprised when I turned off the lights.

u/ralanr 46m ago

Do they look older/taller or am I losing my marbles?

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC 46m ago

It's like getting light up shoes but they barely light up at all.

u/Weeaboo_Interpreter 27m ago

Growing up I had a glow in the dark shirt of Aang in the Avatar State. It was sick as shit.

1

u/strolpol 1h ago

The only glow in the dark thing I remember actually working well was the Nickelodeon flash toy where it was a big wall sized photosensitive screen and a flashbulb wand to make silhouettes and draw stuff on it

1

u/tbodillia 1h ago

Dude. I felt the pain in that last panel.

1

u/Leathman 1h ago

Was it made by Funko?

1

u/gymleader13 1h ago

actually it does glow in the dark. it only works when your eyes are closed though

1

u/DreddPirateBob808 1h ago

Many years ago I had a decepticon logo t-shirt where the ink wasnhighly reflective. Inwent clubbing and near every damned photo had it floating in the background in the gloom. My luminous ones look good under UV (black light) but that t was visible at a hundred yards.

1

u/MalikVonLuzon 1h ago

There's something in the bathtub in panel 4

u/shiba2129808 12m ago

Should’ve put it up to a light first, it helps make the stuff glow brighter

1

u/DarkLanternZBT 1h ago

Oof. That's a 30-year punch to the feels. Nice work.
