As a HUGE fan of The Dresden Files, I was a little scared of reading another Jim Butcher book. I was worried that I was going to want a Harry Dresden experience and that I wouldn’t be able to go in with the proper expectations but I was pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed it. Not as much as Dresden, but I really did love it 🤗

one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I enjoyed it more than some of the recent Brandon Sanderson reads. I think this is one of Butcher’s best books. and I love Codex Alera and Dresden Files.

Currently reading the Olympian Affair. It’s been awhile since I read the first two books. So I don’t really remember.

But does the first book go into the history of the spires much? Like what created the spires? Why the people left the surface? Seems like each spire has its own culture similar to our real world. Aurora is Spanish, Albion is English, Olympia is Greek. Pike is Gypsy pirates?

Anyway. Just curious if that’s ever been discussed. Like how did the surface become the surface etc.

Read Warriorborn awhile back and just started reading TOA this week. Just now realized that the away team mentioned in TOA is the team in Warriorborn. Maybe I’m a little slow but thought that was a cool connection. They are there exploring after the crazy weapon destroyed it.

Just started the second book, The Olympian Affair and I still don’t really have a solid idea of what these steampunk esque airships look like.

Are they essentially just normal age of sail warships with extra sails on the sides and bottom, more like blimps, or even something like you’d see in final fantasy or treasure planet? Or a mix of all above?

I am making a dnd one shot that is going to be a mix of cinder spires and treasure planet. In the cinder spires books it talks about diving ships as "singing" and my players have never read the books before so I'm trying to find out either a sound that I can play for them or a better descriptor for the diving ships.

Looking for other steam punkish books and the big ones all seem set in Victorian times or similar. In the past setting with changes.

I loved the sci-fi aspects combined with the steam punk age-of-sail bits of these books.

Any recommendations?

Seriously, they have gunpowder firearms and cannons. You'd think someone would have figured out sticking some weapons crystals in a tube to push a cannonball. Shrouds would be ineffective and you'd avoid the corrosion issues of gunpowder.

Stick a real world company like Rheinmetall in that universe and airship cannons would be slinging fin stabilized sabot projectiles out of etheric cannons in a week. These dudes have had thousands of years to trip over that idea.

Edit: Also, Rowl and the cats are much better characters in the first book. There, I said it.

Just an appreciation post. 😃 I love the characters, cats and creatures, even the ones I don't like - if that makes sense. And the world building has me so curious to know more. I hope book 3 doesn't take too long.
