Cat Picture - OC FINALLY!!! The Cat Distribution System chose me!!!

Born under a neighbours decking these babies were seen about a week ago exploring her garden, within 48 hours my partner and I successfully trapped and fostered 4 kittens and a mama (who is very obviously pregnant again).

All of our local rescues are full so we’ve become emergency placements 🤣

Mama is struggling with separation, so we’re placing one kitten on with her every couple of hours and this working to help them both, mum is now going longer between frantic searching for her babies.

One of the kittens (Long haired Ginger) was struggling to feed so has gone to a more experienced fosterer and is doing really well.

Mama will be neutered (and termination) next week.

And these little three have gone from hissy murder mittens to love bugs in less than a couple of days. Will be ready for adoption in the coming weeks, we’ve fallen in love with the little short haired ginger and he will be staying with us and our two resident cats who have actually taken to the current lodgers really well.

Only said to my partner a couple weeks ago that it would be wonderful to find a litter… whoops!!

Names
Mama - Doris
Grey - Dio (f)
Black - Ozzy (m)
Short haired Ginger - Axl (m)
Long haired Ginger - Lemmy (m)

Happy Ozzy Day, Ozzy 🐈‍⬛🤘 Such cool nanes ( Lemmy is from my town and Ozzy just up the road on Brum )

20

u/HauntingPsyche 3h ago

Omg they’re all so adorable! The long haired ginger is probably my favorite - he’s the cutest little thing ever!

19

u/Elmolou90 3h ago

He is adorable, so sad he needed a little extra help but from last information he’s doing really well and getting stronger!!

15

u/Horror_Tea761 4h ago

Great work! They are a lovely family!

13

u/DrDuned 3h ago

They're so cute! I'm guessing they're named after scientists and philosophers? 😉

16

u/Elmolou90 3h ago

My philosophers!!

I'm living on a stage, Don't dial my number, I'm closing the page. This is my life, it's not a rehearsal. (Hellraiser, Ozzy and Lemmy)

You and your partner have hearts of gold. Thank you for being in this woeful world.

LOVE BUGS

38

u/KristyNoemsZombieDog 3h ago

Keep them all. 2 cats is like having 1 cat, and 3 cats is like 2 cats which is like 1 cat, so on and so forth

24

u/Elmolou90 3h ago

That would mean 6 cats 😱

11

u/Radiant-Laugh-6519 1h ago

Yes 6 cats = 1 cat. The math maths.

1

u/SaunteringOctopus 16m ago

I fail to see an issue here.

1

u/kushkushmeow 2m ago

I have 5, and it is a lot of cats 😅 don't let them trick you! My mom had 9 once and it was wonderful - but I didn't have to scoop their poops.

9

u/scoyne15 3h ago

I love seeing kittens in food comas.

"Wait, all I gotta do is sleep on or near you, don't hiss or attack you, and you give me all the food I could ever want and clean up my messes? Sign me up!"

2

u/TheHeroHartmut 42m ago

Don't forget the consensual pets and snuggles.

24

u/9for9 4h ago

Why aren't mom and babies being housed together?

79

u/Elmolou90 3h ago

There are a few reasons for the separation. Mum is feral, and socialising her is a much more specialist process than with the kittens. Keeping them together would likely slow the kittens’ progress, as they feed off her anxiety.

The kittens are estimated to be around 8+ weeks old, so they’re fully weaned and at the ideal stage for human socialisation and rehoming.

We also suspect mum may already be pregnant again, which can increase protective behaviour and stress levels. She’s booked in to be spayed (and pregnancy terminated if needed) in the coming week, so separation would be necessary regardless.

We are managing it as a gradual transition, we do allow one of the more confident kittens to spend short periods with her to help reduce her stress, but overall the kittens are settled, eating well, and are not actively seeking her out as they have consistent care from us.

12

u/Radiant-Laugh-6519 1h ago

Just commenting some love and support on this plan. 💕 I wish you all the best things in the world for being a good human.

11

u/HelicopterUpbeat3762 1h ago

I love this so much! And poor momma being pregnant again so soon!! 😭 When I found my Bella we termed the pregnancy and it was definitely the best decision for her! She wasn’t even a year the vet said!! Babies havin babies

5

u/Elmolou90 1h ago

We don’t think Doris is much older, we know all the usual cats round our estate and have never seen her before.

She showed up around 3 weeks ago, I thought she was pregnant then, I fed and watered her and she came back a few times. Then our neighbour posted a picture of her on Facebook, asking if anyone knew her, we commented, a knock on the door begging for help and here we are. She’s brought up a litter of beautiful babies so well for 7/8 weeks alone.

4

u/GDRaptorFan 1h ago

Oh Doris how I love you! I hope she finds a special home with a very patient and loving family. Or will she be fixed and returned to a feral colony outdoors?

I am SO HAPPY you took them all in and are doing the very best thing for every single one 🥰❤️ what a beautiful family that were found by the perfect beautiful human family ❤️

3

u/Elmolou90 58m ago

I don’t believe TNR is practiced here in the UK (someone may tell me differently). So I very much doubt she’ll be released.

We would’ve kept her in a heartbeat but sadly i think she needs a patient single person or couple with a quiet home and with us having two kids and two resident cats already were just not the right fit for her!!

2

u/angiosperms- 1h ago

Thank you for helping them. In the future, I recommend keeping them in an area that is easy to sterilize like a bathroom. Seeing kittens just rescued on someone's couch with a bunch of blankets with the number of kittens that come in with fleas/ringworm/various diseases worries me. 2 week quarantine minimum in my experience. ESPECIALLY because you have resident cats already. Rescued kittens more often than not have some kind of virus + parasites going on, they're catching and eating prey full of viruses and parasites or inheriting them from mom who did that.

1

u/Elmolou90 1h ago

Is there first day ‘free’ they’ve been quarantined for a week, wormed and flead within the first 24 hours. But I’ll bare that in mind for the future!! Thanks

-50

u/melitini 3h ago

Im sorry but taking her kittens and terminating her current pregnancy is fucking brutal. Theres gotta be a better less traumatic way of doing right by this mama. She should be with her kittens at least until after her pregnancy is terminated.

37

u/Elmolou90 3h ago

I understand why it sounds harsh, but this is actually standard practice in rescue situations and is done for welfare reasons. Mum is a feral cat, and repeated pregnancies are a huge physical strain on her. If she is pregnant again, spaying now prevents another litter being born into the same situation.

The kittens are around 8+ weeks old, fully weaned, and doing well; they’re at the ideal stage for socialisation and rehoming. Keeping them with a stressed feral mum at this point would actually make that harder on them.

We’re not just removing them abruptly either, we’re doing a gradual separation based on her behaviour. That’s actually kinder for her, because it allows her to adjust over time rather than going to the vets and suddenly coming back to no kittens at all, which would be far more distressing. She wouldn’t be placed back with her kittens after surgery, risk of infection etc.

All of this is being done to reduce overall stress and prevent further suffering long-term, not to make things easier for us.

6

u/melitini 2h ago edited 1h ago

Thank you for explaining it is a gradual separation and not abrupt. This poor mama has been through a lot.

3

u/D4ltaOne 1h ago

but taking her kittens

Already read your response and LOVE how you responded to OPs reply. I have no clue what im talking about so take my words with a handful of salt, but id like to add to the OP because i feel like they didnt emphasize it enough;

kittens learn everything from their mom, so having all their kittens stay with her all the time, they would learn to be weary of and maybe even aggressive against humans, basically, they would learn to be feral cats. My heart also bleeds for the mom, but it is what it is, can only make the best of the situation

19

u/princessjemmy 3h ago

Mom probably has her own cozy area, and babies are being socialized to humans. She said she’s rotating the babies in, that’s probably good.

The only one who’s not housed together is what sounds like the runt of the litter. They sometimes require specialized care, so it went to a foster who specializes in neonatal care.

It’s all in the body of OP.

u/GrandPerception4 4h ago

2

Congrats, Chosen One!

2

u/triplexkale 1h ago

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful outcome. Thank you for taking them in when the rescues were full. It sounds like you've put a lot of thought into keeping mama as calm as possible, and rotating the kittens with her is such a compassionate approach.

I had to smile at "hissy murder mittens" because that stage never seems to last long once they realize people mean food, warmth, and cuddles.

And I have to say the Cat Distribution System has a funny sense of timing. You wished for a litter and got a whole little family! Wishing Doris a smooth spay and all of the babies loving forever homes

2

u/bu_tterfly 1h ago

So many cats around my apartment, it’s a bummer my partner is allergic😭

So precious 💖💖

2

u/salumbre 4h ago

Congratulations! And they are all adorable!

One question, though. When you say termination --is Doris pregnant?

11

u/Elmolou90 4h ago

We’re fairly sure she is, she’s had a very quick check over (through crate, for injuries) and local vet who works alongside the rescue supporting us is fairly sure too. Kittens are around 8 weeks now so there’s a high chance by all accounts

5

u/salumbre 4h ago

Poor thing. Is she going to be fostered for a longer time, or is she going to be given up for adoption?

ETA: My Penelope was rescued soon after giving birth. I adopted her right after her neutering, and she looked pregnant, so she might have been at that moment.

13

u/Elmolou90 4h ago

She’ll be with us until a foster home is available, we’re spending as much time with her as possible, hand feeding when we can and generally just trying to help her know humans can be safe, but it’s likely she’ll move to another placement and then assessed for rehoming later down the line.

5

u/salumbre 4h ago

Thank you for all the great work, and your kindness!

1

u/Emergency_Fly_5717 3h ago

Meu Deus, que bebezinhos mais lindos, já deu nome?

1

u/TreeHouseSandi 3h ago

Congrats! How did you integrate them with your current kitties?

3

u/Elmolou90 3h ago

We haven’t fully integrated, we’re currently Blanket swapping and allowing our two residents to roam when the kittens are crated, or in their play pod.

Our two would happily wander into the room where mama is crated too but she gets stressed so we’ve stopped them from going into that room.

1

u/TreeHouseSandi 3h ago

Thanks! Going through something similar right now. Looking for all the success stories!
