Cat Picture - OC Skunk stripe?

Excuse all the lint on my shirt. I’ve been doing laundry all day.

My baby, Sashimi, is all black with two white stripes that go down most of his back and a few stripes on his legs. I’ve never seen markings like this on a cat. Just curious if there’s a name for it.

First photo is his skunk stripes. Second photo is from a few weeks ago, when I first found him/brought him home.

Pepe will be around to sung love songs shortly

37

u/SaltRun2465 18h ago

Nah pepe is going to teach the love songs to his kid.

So fun fact if we claim kitty is an actual skunk they would be statistically male.

Male skunks generally have 2 stripes females 1.

That’s interesting! I don’t know that about skunks.

Pretty sure that's his kid

Pepe Le Mew

I was going to suggest Pepe for a name.

Skunk stripes? Those are racing stripes. You got a future zoomer on your hands.

Adorable little thing with a cute name too. :)

He’s definitely a little zoomer. He loves to spazz out and race around the house. 😂

I’ve never seen this before! Please update us in a few weeks I’d love to see his pattern develop

I will, if they stick around :)

I mean ...we'll take more kitten pictures even if the stripes do disappear.

Most black cats are actually covert tabbies! What you are seeing is likely the underlying tabby markings:)

u/Organic_Pick3616 16h ago

Sometimes called ghost tabby markings. They often disappear as the kitten grows up.

u/I_serve_Anubis 16h ago

Yes I love the ghost stripes! the 3 month old girl I am looking after ( & will adopt if an owner doesn’t come forward ) looks black until I use a flash & then you can see the faint brown tabby markings.

I’m curious to see if they fade or become more visible when she is older.

My two year old void boy is fully saturated until summer comes around, he becomes a rust cat and I can see his faint tabby stripes in the sunlight

5

u/MadMechem 7h ago

Yo same! My void/orange has teensy little invisible tabby stripes!

(He's also enormous and runs into walls, sooo)

3

u/pwassonchat 7h ago

I was going to ask why you say he's orange, but if he runs into walls, maybe he is orange inside 😸

2

u/MadMechem 7h ago

He's like a Terry's Chocolate Orange- looks like dark chocolate, but has orange so thoroughly ingrained that the color doesn't matter.

u/Lumpy_Benefit666 2h ago

Looks like my little chubber

Occasionally you can see a faint shadow of them in bright sunlight.... I love when you can see a few tabby markings on what we perceive as a completely black cat. It makes me wonder if, with their better vision, they can always see those markings.... And why.... I know the tabby markings provide camo in the woods but do they say anything else to other cats?

Sorry, just musing a bit! Cute baby.

That’s amazing. I’ve never seen anything like that.

33

u/Dazzling_Article_652 18h ago

Really cool. I wonder if it’s a fever coat variation?

17

u/weinrsmashr 18h ago

I’d never heard of that until now. I just looked it up and it sounds like they would’ve been noticeable the whole time? He looked completely black when I first found him. The stripes seem to be developing as he grows.

u/SkeletalMew 18h ago

This is what I'm wondering as well!

u/Imsortofok 17h ago

All boys are stinky.

And they have cooties.

u/AuditingReverb 15h ago

Reminds me of the kitty I adopted this June 28th. Named him Reverb. This is a pic of my cat Puddys 16th birthday yesterday my skunk cat is to the far right.

6

u/weinrsmashr 15h ago

Happy birthday Puddy! 🥳

Edit: Lmaoooo. Just saw the skunk 😂

2

u/AuditingReverb 14h ago

That's funny... yip skunk is there. He's the new lil brother. About 10 weeks old.

7

u/trappedinthisxy 18h ago

It’s the silver lining.

6

u/cherrymitten 18h ago

so cute!! i also rescued a black kitten who we named Sashimi 😭🖤

7

u/weinrsmashr 18h ago

Love that! He has a “sister” named Sushi who we got first, so Sashimi seemed fitting.

5

u/cherrymitten 17h ago

omg, we also chose the name sashimi because we have a kitty named Sushi! This is Sushi and sashimi went to her forever home after we rescued her :)

3

u/weinrsmashr 15h ago

That’s so cute! He/she is gorgeous. I love black cats.

I guess Pepe Le Pew finally married the cat 😹

Penelope!!!

Just had to share the 666 upvote for the Skunk Void.

3

u/Glam-Star-Revival 18h ago

My first thought was he’s a “little stinker”. So cute, but it will probably clear out to black as he gets older.

3

u/infinitesoupbowls 18h ago

He may grow out of them, but this is genuinely so cute. Black kittens, in my experience, are the wildest lil things to watch as their coats develop. There is a lot more change and variation over the course of weeks for reasons I dont know, but have only witnessed lol.

3

u/weinrsmashr 18h ago

That’s interesting. I’m totally fine with him ending up all black, but I think the stripes are super cute.

2

u/infinitesoupbowls 17h ago

Yeah! I had kittens that looked smokey (grayish root with black tips) become darker, but you could still see tabby stripes. Kittens that looked dark chocolatey brown and then turn black. More stuff like that too.

I think "true black" pigment is pretty rare, so you have a loooooot of variations of how it presents itself.

3

u/YellowZx5 14h ago

If he farts and smells like Skunk, you know who the father was.

2

u/potatoeater95 18h ago

this is so punk rock it’s almost hard to believe

2

u/Switchlord518 18h ago

Racing stripes!

2

u/OklahomaRose7914 18h ago

He is freaking adorable, and I love those stripes!

1

u/Oritzia 18h ago

What a little sweet pea. 🥹
Relative of Pepe? 🤭

1

u/Gullible-Egg-37 18h ago

I see everyone thought of the Pepe character. Cute kitty.

1

u/Azure_Skies333 18h ago

You named him Pepe right? Right?!?!

1

u/weinrsmashr 15h ago

He didn’t have the stripes when I first found him. His name is Sashimi and his “sister” we rescued is Sushi.

1

u/Saconic 17h ago

Melanistic tabby?

1

u/macrhea69 17h ago

When he ages, there’s a good chance those stripes will become less visible. Super cute baby! Congrats! Did you make him Pepe?

1

u/Material_Laugh5643 16h ago

Yeah now you gotta name him skunk

1

u/Physical-Laugh2000 15h ago

Call him/her stinky 😂🔥❤️🔥

First time seeing a race cat lol

1

u/sharkwaffles 6h ago

Hello to another Sashimi!! This is one of my foster kittens. She looks mad because she just got gabapentin and her suit is because she just got spayed 😻

1

u/Ok-Beginning297 5h ago

It's very unusual, especially in the West. It's slightly more common in Thailand; it's called but-se-weis or but-tal-lon.

This could just be fever coat. It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

We have a void that clearly has tabby genetics but its really hard to see his "stripes" except in the exact correct light
