There is so much lawlessness and a general sense of disorder in Cape town/South africa. Whenever I hear my colleagues, friends or family talking about politics and corruption, I find myself asking the question:

How can we expect politicians to respect laws and rules when so many of us do not practise those values in our own daily lives? We rage about corruption at the highest level but then act selfish and dishonest at the street level.

People allow their dogs off leash in public spaces and do not clean up after them. They litter while walking or throw trash/cigarette stompies out of their cars while driving. They play loud music, smoke around others, fly drones where they disturb people, or hold conversations on speakerphone without considering anyone nearby. They behave as though public spaces belong exclusively to them rather than being shared by everyone.

On the roads, people speed, drive recklessly, run red lights, ignore pedestrian crossings, block intersections, park illegally, use emergency lanes, drive while looking at their phones and treat basic traffic laws as optional. So many people I know don't pay their traffic fines because 'its a money making scheme' , 'it doesn't actually prevent speeding' yada yada yada.

Sure you could argue that none of the above are the same as large scale corruption but It feels like it all comes from the same underlying attitude - 'Rules are for other people, and my personal convenience matters more than my community. I don't care how my actions impact you'

I don't see how we can demand better from our leaders when we ourselves aren't upholding those standards.

Anyways, just some thoughts while on the toilet.

Posting in response to seeing posts about how to go about contesting traffic infringements.

Personal experience:

I was cited for not stopping at a stop sign. Implausible due to the details in the infringement description. The infringement occurred in Adderley street, while I was already at home in the southern suburbs. I do not work in Town.

17 May 2026, I emailed [email protected] and pleaded my case with evidence, such as Google maps location tracking that shows where I drove and stopped, and a purchase I made at PostoNET. Coincidentally, the purchase time and the infringement time is 2mins apart. So not sure how I teleported from town to the south in 2 mins

24 May 2026, I followed up.

01 July 2026, they emailed back stating the infringement was withdrawn.

Key points:

1. Turn around time is cited for 31 days

2. They take longer than the cited turn around time

3. The odds of it going to court is slim if you have sufficient evidence

4. Google got me the contact info. You can also CC [email protected] and [email protected], but it's kinda pointless.

I am in my late 30s and would really like to get into the property market. With property prices in Cape Town being so high, I am considering starting small by buying a rental property in a more affordable area.

I have been looking at properties in Fisantekraal, where some homes are priced between approximately R250 000 and R350 000. My intention would not be to charge unreasonable rent. I simply want to make a responsible investment, get my foot in the door and hopefully grow from there over time.

Has anyone bought property in Fisantekraal or the surrounding areas? I would really appreciate honest advice on rental demand, potential challenges, safety, maintenance, tenant management and whether this could be a worthwhile starting point.

I was stopped this morning at what I thought was just a routine roadblock. I rolled down my window expecting the usual check, but the officer immediately told me I was “in contravention.”

I was completely caught off guard and asked, “What for?”
He said I hadn’t stopped at a stop sign.
What struck me afterwards was that, from where they were positioned, they couldn’t actually see the stop sign because their own vehicles were parked on the red line, blocking the view.

At the time, I didn’t argue because it felt pointless. I was issued a printed fine for R1,500.

Looking back, I’m annoyed that I didn’t drive back afterwards and take photos of where they and their vehicles were positioned.

Has anyone successfully challenged something like this? Or, without any proof, is it realistically just a case of paying the fine and moving on?

I've tried to get some quotes to repair a leak on the skimmer box of my pool.

My problem is that I've been getting wildly different quotes and I don't know who to trust. Don't necessarily want to take the cheapest one , and on the other side of the scale I don't want to spend R8k . That just sounds too much.

Is that what repairs go for or am I getting ripped off...??

I’m just completely lost at the moment on how you are supposed to start a comfortable life in Cape Town?
One in which you can start a family and not live in a small apartment.

For some context, my partner and I would like to start a family soon and as such will need a bigger place than the one we are currently renting.

The dream is obviously to have a small house with a small garden to raise our children in.

We both have stable jobs in secondary and tertiary education and from what I’ve read are making a good household income every month.

Yet despite making a decent household income and living frugally, achieving this dream seems utterly impossible for us. The prices are ridiculous and so very expensive, even small houses are unaffordable. The market is just rather hostile to young families.

Then on top of that you must still build your savings and pay for daily life.

How are you supposed to start a life together as a young family in Cape Town?
Is it even possible to do this anymore with an educators salary?

Any advice, tips or general wisdom on this will be appreciated.

Hola Cape Townians over the last few days I have been gathering some public insight. Im a self employed guy and i wanted to get into retal equipment. There is certain equipment that is in demand but I dont own and those that do dont rent it out.

So my question is this, If there were a platform that allowed you to list idle items in your garage, basement or locker. Items that were in demand and insignificant or expensive to buy but important for part time use that somebody two streets over needs exactly that for a weekend and currently has no easy way to find it or trust whoever's offering it.

So, honestly: would you actually list something you own for someone else to rent? What would stop you theft, damage, the awkwardness of a stranger coming to your house, not worth the hassle for the money, something else entirely?

Not looking for validation here, genuinely want the real reasons people wouldn't do this too. That's more useful to me than the yeses.

I converted this 1884 Cape Town map into a high-res image, and these were my most interesting takeaways ..

1. The shoreline once extended to the Castle, which is now the Foreshore on reclaimed land
   
2. There was a tram to Sea Point, you can spot it on the Main Rd in Green Point
   
3. The Atlantic Seaboard was spacious..large gardens/ lots of open land
   
4. Many familiar street names already existed, if you zoom in you will notice them
   
5. The well known Battery Park got its name from the Amsterdam Battery
   
6. The Clock Tower was already a prominent landmark

Fellow Cape Town FGC players, I need help! My partner and I have really gotten into fighting games this year, mostly Skullgirls. For Christmas I want to build us two arcade sticks to play with. The case will either be made from Wood or be 3D printed (I have friends who do both and give me discounts on projects)

My problem comes with the lever, buttons, and PCB. As far as I know, Sanwa and the other big names don’t export to SA. Does anyone know where I can source these parts in CT?

Okay so I have no idea if what I’m asking makes any sense but this feels like abit of a niche ask, and lowkey kinda silly, but I’m looking for someone who can repair an electric toothbrush… it’s out of warranty and I don’t really want to chuck it in the bin considering there’s a possibility it might still function and was pretty pricey (no judgement zone), so yeah idk… who do I even ask for such a service?

I’m an American and lived in Cape Town off and on from 2019 - 2024. My dad was born and raised in SA and immigrated to the US in the 90s. When I was living in Cape Town, I absolutely loved it. Food scene was fantastic, having the ocean and the mountains next to each other was a dream… I loved the vineyards, the people I met, the dance culture and artistic scene. The problem is… It’s really far and expensive to get back and forth from the US, and it’s hard being that far away from family for a few reasons at the moment. My heart is still in Cape Town.. but I’m curious: has anyone found Cape Town’s sister city? Maybe somewhere in Europe? Good food, nature, work/life balance… I have a Swiss passport so anything in the EU is accessible. I value traveling, fitness, entrepreneurship, family, hosting friends and events, and dancing! I’m looking for a similar vibe, but easier to travel back and forth from the US. Oh, and safe!

Would love to hear anyone’s experiences! Does it exist?🤔
