Montague Soapbox Races on September 27th!

Post image

Hi Everyone!

The Montague Soapbox Races are on for this year! This event is incredibly fun to watch (and my husband races in it)! Unfortunately last year it was cancelled for various reasons (including not enough people signing up). We're trying to get the word out to more people. There used to be a few soapbox races but now they seem to be hard to find. I'm hoping some of you might be handy and interested in participating!

The race happens at Unity Park in Montague/Turners Falls, which is around 30 min south of Brattleboro. It's not just for locals! We have had racers from other states join in previous years. Children as young as 8 can participate too (they start lower down the hill than the adults).

Sign up is open now! https://montaguesoapboxraces.com/
Get started on those builds and save the date for Sunday September 27th 2026.

Tell your friends, get a little friendly competition going!

Please reach out to the soapbox committee with any questions or if you'd like to help make this year's race the best ever! https://montaguesoapboxraces.com/contact

Movers?

Hello! I am moving from one side of town to the other and looking for a moving company to move my heavy furniture. I've driven by Butch's hundreds of times, but they no longer seem to be in business. Any recommendations?

Friends visiting with a toddler. Things to do?

My friends (who love the area) are coming for their first trip back to the Brattleboro area after having their kid. We usually hike Ascutney and go to some pretty treacherous swimming holes, but they’re bringing their 2.5 year old son, so that all won’t work out.

What are some fun, toddler-friendly things to do? Maybe something with farm animals, PYO berries, a shallow/easily accessible swimming area, or something else I’m missing?

Crime rate?

Hello, I’m looking in to moving to Brattleboro but I’m seeing mixed reviews online regarding crime. Is it truly that bad? Is it violent crimes or just property crime?

Windham Windsor Housing Trust-☑️ or 🚫?

I am looking at new places to live in Windham County, and my mother lives in a reasonably nice apartment owned by WWHT. She pays way less in rent than I ever did in my current apt, which I've lived in since 2016. No urgent need to move, I'm just ready for a change and my Section 8 gives me more options.

I have heard very negative reviews about WWHT, which makes me hesitant to apply to one of their properties. If anyone lives in a building owned by them, what has your experience been like?

Weekend in Brattleboro

Hi all, I’m taking my 9 year old to visit her grandma and we’re meeting halfway in Brattleboro for a weekend in mid July. Looking for tips on where to stay and things to do. any particular hotels in good locations and would love to find places to take her swimming, activities, farms to visit or anything else you can think of. Thanks!

Matzah bread delivery?

My neighbor on Speno Street just had a van full of Orthodox Jews drop off a case of matzah bread on her doorstep when she wasn’t home. She says this is the second year it’s happened, although she wrote I off last year because it was closer to Passover…..anyone know why? Our best guess is a previous resident had something going, but we weren’t sure if this was a Brattleboro thing…..

Any stand-up comedy fans in Brattleboro? A comedian is headlining the Hooker Dunham Theater on Friday

Hey all, my name is Jonathan van Halem. I'm a stand-up comedian at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In the past I've opened for comedians like David Cross, Rory Scovel, and Gianmarco Soresi.

I'm headlining a show this Friday at the Hooker Dunham Theater in Brattleboro. Opening for me are a couple of local comics, Akhil Sravastava and Joshua Nelson. Tickets can be purchased here! If you want to check out my comedy, here's my Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook.

The last time I was in Vermont was 8 years ago when I went swimming in Dorset Quarry. I chickened out from jumping from the highest part, thus losing the respect of the people I was with. This time will go much differently.

If you'll already be at First Friday, I hope you consider checking out this show!

Found Honda key dongle

I just found a Honda key dongle alongside a trail that intersects Lower Woodlands Trail near the Retreat Trail system. I hung it from a visible twig just above where I found it, in case the owner is retracing steps to find it.

If it’s still there, I’ll take it to a public place (where is good?), or otherwise to get it to the person who can describe the other items on the key ring.

UPDATE: Keys taken to Brattleboro main Police Station on Sunday afternoon.

full disclosure - i am jonathan van halem. I frequently work as an opener for comedians like Rory Scovel and Gianmarco Soresi.

if you're interested in seeing me live, tickets can be found here. i've never been to brattleboro before. Last time i was in southern vermont was about 8 years ago. i went swimming at dorset quarry and was worried i'd get some sort of infection from the stagnant water. I suspect this trip will be much better.

http://bratbike.com/ says they're shutting down and not taking repairs. Any ideas on where I can get some repairs done? Preferably closer to west brat if there are options.

I've been on xfinity for the past couple of years and the price is about to spike. Considering Fidium and would love to know what others' experiences have been with it (or other alternatives I might not have on my radar). I need high-speed and very reliable as I work from home. Thanks for any input!

Dining Out In Brattleboro.

UPDATE: My dining calendar is now currently full. Thank you to everyone that reached out!

Dining Out In Bratt.

58 [F] traveling to Brattleboro for business on Thursday (4/16) and Friday (4/17).

Love dining out, especially when work is paying for it, but hate dining out alone.

NOT looking for restaurant recommendations because I'm in town frequently for work.

Would love to find a dining companion for dinner on Thursday evening after work.

No, I won't come to your house/condo/apartment/white van so that you can cook for me!

Dark comedy "Mostly Jokes" comes to Brattleboro on Thursday, April 9 (and supports a good cause!)

Hello Brattleboro,

I posted here about a month ago, I hope you don't mind one more reminder (and another batch of jokes in the clip) about my stand up show Thursday, April 9 at the Hooker Dunham Theater in town. 20% of all ticket sales will be donated to the local non-profit New England Youth Theater that supports young people in theater arts.

Heads up: "Mostly Jokes" covers some dark topics (depression, dysfunctional family life, bipolar fathers, schizophrenic brothers, even vegan uncles... you get the idea) but I promise it is mostly jokes.

I quit my job at 50 to be a comic and I've been working on it for about three years in clubs and theaters around the US and Canada. I'm planning to tape it as my first special later this year.

The show runs about 90 minutes, no opener, no intermission and, best of all, I promise I don't do crowd work.

The show is $20 at the Hooker Dunham Theater, 139 Main St #407, on Thursday, April 9. Doors at 700pm, show at 730pm

More info through my site www.MostlyJokes.com as well as the opportunity to read a bunch of reviews from people who have seen it, watch other clips, etc.

If you're already convinced, go straight to the tickets page: https://aaronfoster.myshopify.com/products/battleboro-vt-hooker-dunham-theater-mostly-jokes OK, that's it. Thanks!
