In the episode, Ben noted for a moment how the Gods don't really play a role in the movie and how that's neat, then the guys (who just weren't that versed in the poem and that's obviously ok) lightly agree that it was cool.

I think this is fundamentally the most interesting aspect of Nolan's interpretation of the poem. When the movie gets to the Cylops early, my favorite section of the poem, I was initially disappointed at how cut short it was. No Nemo, no "nobody is hurting me", and most pointedly no acknowledgement of the fact that harming Poseidon's son is what leads to Poseidon actively preventing the journey home. (Yes they mention that he whimpers to Poseidon, but the God doesn't show up.)

But once it is revealed that Zendaya isn't really playing Athena and is instead playing a young girl he saw murdered in Troy and whose image he has just equated with Athena, everything unlocked for me. Nolan's version of the Gods, and by extension the Christian God and the spiritual, is something that can implicitly impact our journeys, but not actively. One could read his version of the story as assuming that Gods don't exist in this world at all and that they only exist in the characters' faith. That's an insanely bold decision based off the original text!

The choice to remove the Gods as active participants in The Odyssey is Nolan telling us more about his views of spirituality than any other decision he's ever made in a movie.

Hearing a lot of rumors about Flappy Bird being in this one.

Because holy shit that absolutely blew me away! I saw it in IMAX yesterday and it was like I was right there on that boat being slammed around by the waves. I could almost feel the wind and the rain on my face, and the thunder was incredibly convincing. Definitely my top choice so far for the Best Sound oscar.

I was gonna say I missed seeing him as a lead but Blackberry was only 3 years ago? And in between he's done Caitlin Cronenberg's film, a Crave Original doc series, and both seasons of the hit show FUBAR that everyone's talking about all the time?

Anyways this looks fun! Couldn't resist immediately going to Ken Carter's Wikipedia page and "spoiling" this for myself tho

Having seen the film I am glad to report it is a low-key blast of a movie. Funny, poignant and it feels accurate in its depiction of 1975 New England. The decision to focus on one summer in teenage Bourdain's life is an excellent one. Dominic Sessa is fantastic and – unless the film sinks on its release – will be in the awards conversation, along with the screenplay. Definitely one of the strongest films of 2026 so far.

I watched this before every film I saw for years & always looked forward to it.

Unfortunately only the 'censored' version can be found online. The cuts are obvious but I clearly remember her bashing the talking couple's heads together.

The 'stars' coming out of their heads & forming the logo is a nice touch.

The 3d rendering of the concessions stand is a labour of love too - they got it spot-on!
