DISCUSSION “Made with safe, compliant ingredients” is not the same as a safe product
Quick one that I think matters and nobody really talks about.
The stuff you leave on your skin, like beard oil/butter is supposed to stay under certain safety limits for how much of certain ingredients it can contain. Some materials that are acceptable at low levels may not be acceptable at higher ones.
Here’s a blind spot I think is easy to fall into as a newer brand.
A lot of woody, sophisticated scents lean on two popular materials called Iso E Super and Timbersilk. You’ve probably smelled them before, that smooth modern wood note that’s in half the fragrances out right now. They are separate materials, but IFF lists the same CAS numbers and the same main OTNE isomer for both. So even though they’re different products and have somewhat different effects in a formula, they contribute to the same IFRA-regulated OTNE total.
Think of it like caffeine. One coffee is fine. But a coffee plus an energy drink plus a pre-workout isn’t three separate safe doses, it’s all stacking in the same body. Same thing here. Two ingredients that each look fine on their own can add up to too much when they contribute the same regulated component.
Here’s a real example from my own work. An earlier version of my oil NOIR lived in this woody territory. When I actually ran the numbers for the first time, at a 3% fragrance load it went over the applicable limit, but at 2% it came in under. Same formula, same ingredients, the only difference was how much of that shared component was adding up across everything in the blend. And if I’d just been mixing premade fragrance oils instead of building it from raw ingredients, I might never have caught it, because each oil would’ve looked totally fine on its own.
Say a brand doesn’t build scents from scratch. They buy two premade fragrance oils and use both in the same beard oil. Oil A is a cedar scent leaning on Iso E Super. Oil B is a dry amber leaning on Timbersilk. For example: each supplier permits its oil up to 3% of the finished product when used on its own. The maker uses 2% of Oil A and 2% of Oil B and thinks they’re fine, both are under 3%, right?
But the safety limit isn’t per fragrance oil. It’s on the total amount of that shared component in the finished product. Oil A brings OTNE. Oil B brings OTNE. Now both are contributing at once, and the combined total can land over the limit, even though each oil on its own was under its own ceiling. Each supplier’s certificate covers that supplier’s specific mixture at a given concentration. It doesn’t assess the new combined mixture the maker just created by putting both together.
And it’s not unique to just these two materials. The same stacking happens with other regulated ingredients. Coumarin adds up across tonka, hay, and coumarin crystals in sweeter scents. Eugenol adds up across clove, cinnamon leaf, allspice, and neat eugenol in spicy ones. The same happens with citral in citrus materials and geraniol in florals. Each source can be acceptable alone while their total contribution becomes too high when combined.
This doesn’t mean smaller brands are being reckless. It’s an understandable mistake when every ingredient shows up with paperwork saying it can be used up to a certain percentage. But an IFRA certificate applies to one specific fragrance mixture and one intended use. It doesn’t automatically cover a new mixture someone creates by combining products from different suppliers, and it doesn’t replace a full safety assessment of the finished product.
The safety limits are there for a reason. All I am saying is it’s easy to trust that mixing two “safe” things gives you a safe result, and that’s not always true. Worth knowing what’s actually going on your face.
I am genuinely curious: as someone who buys beard products, would you want brands to be more transparent about how they handle fragrance safety? Or does it not really matter to you as long as the product smells good and feels good on your face?
And if any formulators want to get into the weeds on how you actually check the safety of the final product, I am all ears.
