Excuse me for the stupid question but does every bat colony with pups get considered as a maternity colony?
I wanna ask questions here daily, btw. I have so many questions about bats.

Brazilian free tailed bat?
This bat was crawling while I was grilling yesterday and hasn’t moved from this spot. I suspect it unfortunately has died but wanted to see what kinda bat we think it is. Local public health department told me to just dispose of it.
My guess is Brazilian free tailed bat based on local Florida bats.

What are the most common non anthrogenic mortality causes in bats? Is it disease? Do they die of rabies often?
I heard Predation occurs at pretty low numbers for bigger and or more agile, and cave roosting and non ground foraging bats. Be it then, is the main cause they've been "designed" to die from is disease?

Video Morning bat sighting! I have never seen bats in the morning, this is a terrible video but there were five buzzing around the sky at 5:00 am during a very light rain. I figure some bugs were buzzing around that were worth catching? ❤️

Why do I never see bats?
Hey guys. I live in Spain, in a small city.
Today I realised that I have never actually seen them where I live. My parents and grandparents live 100km away from me and I have seen bats in their places (porches, inside the house, in the garage, dead bats in the attic). But have never seen a bat around me.
Not even one flying above me. Not dead, not alive, zero. I have been living in my current neighbourhood for 2 years now.
Why? Is it bad air quality? High humidity (I live very close to the sea)? What influences bat population?
Thanks!
Do you guys see the bats? A navigable map of the entire subfamily of Vesper Bats, based on taxonomic data rather than geography.
This map, Vespertilioninae - Land of Vesper Bats, contains every known living species of vesper bats I could find reliable taxonomic data for. Species are represented as cities, grouped into genera and tribes according to their evolutionary relationships.
Science, design and cartography merge in MAPPA ANIMALIA, a visual project that reimagines the evolutionary relationships of animals as detailed map-like landscapes.
MAPPA ANIMALIA is an ever-growing series of illustrations I’ve created that currently consisting of 16 different maps - each dedicated to a specific family in the animal kingdom.
Instead of political borders or geographic territories, these maps are structured around phylogenetic trees.
Tribes and genera replace countries, states and regions allowing viewers to explore the animal kingdom through a format traditionally used to understand geography.
Additional information includes conservation status, size comparisons between selected species and a species index.
I’ve spent roughly ten years developing and refining this concept, combining zoology, taxonomy, illustration and cartography into a single visual format.
Happy exploring!

Question Help choosing a new home location for our bats
We just discovered some droppings on our deck under an attic vent. We thought they might have moved into our attic but after investigating further and reviewing some camera footage, think they moved into the underside of the vent louvers (on the outside side of the screen/attic) during a rain night a few nights ago. Very glad they're not in the attic!

We're in North Carolina and realize it's maternity season, so are in no particular rush, but would like to offer them a more comfortable home. Ordered one of these for now, but am open to whatever.
(Option 1) We have the remains of an old fallen tree (currently has a basketball hoop mounted on it) that is maybe 30' from the attic vent they're currently living in.
(Option 2) There's an old utility pole that is no longer in use that is probably 75' away from the attic vent.

We also have lots of other trees that could be options, but realize they might not be attractive (we have squirrels, birds, raccoons, etc). And of course we could do multiple if it makes sense.
Any thoughts on where they'd be most comfortable and anything we can do (without harming or evicting them!) to help speed along their move?

Question I hope this is ok for me to post here… Could y’all help make the Indiana Bat the official state mammal?
I know this is a little odd, but someone made a post in my local sub about how apparently Indiana doesn’t have a state mammal. They added a link to a petition to make the Indiana Bat (Myotis Sodalis) the official state mammal. I’m not a bat expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I personally think the bat is a great and very unique choice.
Not only is it cute, it helps keep the mosquito population lower. Also, personally, I always remember watching them swoop across the sky on summer evenings, and thinking how cool they were.
Anywho, if you could lend a hand on this, I’d be super grateful. You’d also be helping make a historic decision, and helping bring awareness to such an amazing creature. 💖🦇💖

Art Pixel Art Of My Fruit Bat Character Blast Facing Forward
Does it count as self-promotion as mentioned in that recent post if I am not selling anything, just showing the artwork and posting a link to the DeviantArt version? By the way, that would be at https://www.deviantart.com/batblaster/art/Blast-Flying-Front-View-July-2026-Version-Frame-1-1357619966
I am not selling commissions or prints, just showing my latest art of this guy.

Question [Meta] Self-promotion or advertisement should be disclosed
If a person wants to share their creations or crafts with the intention of encouraging people to look at their profile with sales links and commission info, they should include in the post description or title that they're a seller.

Question Where to find accurate bat products?
I love bats. Especially vampire bats. But you can't look for anything vampire bat themed without exclusively getting stereotypical "vampire bat" designs that look nothing like actual vampire bats :( Where could I find things depicting bats accurately? Doesn't even have to be vampire bats, just any good representation of bats.

Potential bat?
I live in Maine and the other day at 7am I was sitting on my deck steps when I see this black thing out of the corner of my eye felt a breeze on the side of my face then it was gone. Could it have been a bat?
