Bathroom safety is something many families don't think much about until mobility starts to change. After reading hundreds of caregiver discussions and talking with customers over the years, we've noticed that many of the biggest challenges come from small details that are easy to miss.
Here are a few that come up again and again:
- Focusing on the shower but forgetting the rest of the bathroom
Many falls happen while getting to or from the shower, not just while bathing. Wet floors, tight spaces, and poor lighting can all increase the risk.
- Choosing equipment based only on weight capacity
Weight capacity is important, but stability, seat height, and ease of transfers often have a bigger impact on everyday use.
- Waiting until mobility becomes a serious problem
Making small changes earlier can help people stay independent longer and make caregiving less physically demanding.
- Forgetting that caregivers need support too
If helping someone bathe requires lifting, twisting, or awkward movements every day, it can quickly become exhausting. A safer setup should make things easier for both the person receiving care and the caregiver.
Every home is different, but we've learned that it's usually the small adjustments that have the biggest impact over time. Hopefully some of these points are useful for anyone who's just starting to make their bathroom a little safer.
