Dandies mallows
I sent an email yesterday to ask if they know whether the sugar they use, is processed with bone char. I got this response which is really great news!💖

Would you buy roasted makhana (fox nuts) as a healthy snack in Australia?
Hi everyone,
I’m doing some market research before deciding whether to start a small food business in Australia, and I’d love some honest feedback.
I’m considering importing and selling roasted makhana (also called fox nuts or lotus seeds). They’re a popular snack in India but don’t seem to be very well known in Australia.
Nutritionally, they compare quite well with many common snack foods. Per 100g, they typically contain approximately:
🔥 350–380 calories
💪 9–10g protein
🌾 14–15g fibre
🥜 Less than 1g fat
🌾 Naturally gluten-free
🌱 Suitable for vegetarians and vegans
Compared with popcorn, they’re generally higher in protein and fibre while remaining relatively low in fat (depending on seasoning and preparation).
I’m curious:
Have you ever tried makhana?
If not, would the nutrition profile make you interested in trying it?
What flavours would you be most likely to buy? (Peri Peri, BBQ, Salt & Vinegar, Cheese, Chilli Lime, Caramel, etc.)
What price would you expect to pay for a 60–80g bag?
Where would you expect to find it? (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Amazon, health food stores, Asian/Indian supermarkets, online, etc.)
Would this be something you’d actually replace chips or popcorn with, or is it not appealing?
I’m not promoting a brand—I’m genuinely trying to figure out whether there’s enough demand before investing money into a business.
I really appreciate any honest opinions, even if your answer is simply “I wouldn’t buy it because…”
Thanks!

New plant milks at Woolworths
Vitasoy and Mandole Orchard have some new milks at Woolworths. There are 3 flavours of the individual Mandole Orchard (matcha, chocolate and iced coffee) and there is also a plain complete milk from Vitasoy in addition to the Vanilla. If anyone has tried them let me know what they are like. The Vitasoy one has more protein than normal milk and b12 and A added.

Lunch at The Green Edge, in Windsor, Brisbane.
The painters are painting inside my house so I just live here now. I don't know how to exist as a human when tradies are over.
This is the Four Piece VFC on the lunch menu.

Trying to instil vegan values in your kid when…
Jumpscare. I know I’ll need to educate my child about these things as we don’t live in a vegan world, but it’s crazy the normalisation of it from such a young age.

Old tofu - please advise
So hey, has anyone eaten extra-firm tofu well past its bb date?
I've found two that were pushed out of sight in the drinks fridge 🙄, which are 9 weeks past the bb date.
I've opened one, and it looks and smells fine, so I'm loathe to chuck them if they're not going to poison me.

Cashew mascarpone
This is a Nora Cooks' recipe.
I didn't add any sweetener, and I added 2 tsp coconut oil for added richness and solidification, since half of my coconut cream was 'lite'.
I'm planning to put a layer of biscoff on top of my chickpea brownie base (currently in the freezer as i don't want it till Sunday), then put the mascarpone on top. The inspiration comes from little blog of vegan.
The flavour of the mascarpone is good but surprisingly, somewhat sweet, considering I omitted the sweetener. It has a noticeable coconut flavour as you would expect, so I'm not sure how it would go in a savoury recipe. It's also decidedly not white like mascarpone, but the visual contrast with the base might help that.
The texture, while it's still just-made, is close to whipped cream, so it could be useful for many things.

Need Mozzarella alternatives
Hi all!
Recent vegan here and thought I would look upon this community to help since recommendations I found online are a bit outdated.
I have tried Made with Plants Mozzarella but decided to stop buying for ethical reasons. I really do love Mozzarella though so would appreciate any recommendations for a vegan alternative that is accessible (Can be bought at chain grocery stores).
Thank you!

Twisties pickle flavour
I managed to buy this from Woolies ONCE around six weeks ago and haven’t been able to find it since?? I know it’s a limited edition, but I think it only came out in April so surely it hasn’t been discontinued already…
Can anyone in Sydney point me to a shop that definitely stocks it? I work all over the place so anywhere in Sydney would be helpful to know :)

Cheeseburger hack for when you have no vegan cheese, I improvised it tonight
I swear, this sounds weird but it works.
Make a little paste with light-flavoured soy sauce/tamari, nutritional yeast and a bit of oil (I use canola.) When you've seared both sides of the burger patty, brush it with the paste then turn it over again so the paste cooks onto the patty into a kind of crust. Make sure it doesn't burn, you just want a sort of light caramelisation.
If anyone is vintage enough to remember the Sizzler cheese toast, it kind of tastes like the coating on that!

These are delicious 🌭
I bought these from The Green Edge in Brisbane recently, and have tried to buy hot dog buns twice (but out of stock each time??) so gave up and had them on normal bread. Taste & texture were divine, so close to meat hot dogs! Would definitely buy again 🌭

Protein shake without powder?
I seem only to drink my protein powder in a shake, with oat milk, berries and banana. Rather than spending big on whizz-bang protein powders, can I get the same nutritional benefits by using protein heavy nuts and seeds instead? Hemp seeds, chia seeds, etc. Any nice recipes?
Thanks!

S'mores
What chocolate do you guys use? I only had this one on hand n it didn't melt very well, it turned kinda clumpy (I'm guessing cuz it has very little cocoa fat) so had to improvise n add some syrup to make it pliable. They tasted alright - a bit too sweet for me personally, but I can see kids would enjoy the novelty in making s'mores.

Vegan Protein Bar Options
Just wondering what everyone eats - they all seem very high in sugar and only 10 grams of protein.
Eg Muscle Nation, Health Lab & Greenback
In saying that, love the taste and convenience.
Any suggestions would be grand!
Thanks!

Perfect… Ted.
Found at Coles in Oakleigh yesterday. Tastes amazing. Vegan friendly and reasonably low in sugars for the sweetness.

People get defensive about their eating habits when you just mention you are vegan in passing
Like if you're at work and someone's buying food and you ask them to buy you the vegan option, people will automatically go on the defensive even if you pass absolutely no judgement or comment whatsoever. Cue the "well I don't eat THAT much meat BUT" comment over and over again, completely unprompted

Best NO PREP vegan meal delivery services in Melbourne?
Hi all,
My friend just had a baby and I’d like to send her and her partner a week or two worth of frozen meals. I definitely don’t want the kit style I think Hello Fresh do where you have to prep the food or have extra ingredients on hand - just easy yummy stuff they can throw in the oven and eat. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Going vegan for second time. First time being vegan in Melbourne.
hi guys. i’m new to melbourne, i’m hoping someone can help me out!
i am already gluten free and dairy free (both due to health reasons). i went vegan around 2019 years ago for a couple of years and i need to make some changes and im looking into veganism again.
i would love everyone’s suggestions where to frequent for vegan and gluten free eats in the city and inner north!
i’d also love your suggestions for your favourite gluten free and vegan foods to buy from coles woolies aldi or anywhere local to melbourne. i’m particularly keen on hearing about any bakeries!
thanks!!!

any recommendations for vegan black hair dye?
hey!! it's as the title says, i've been vegan for about 5 months now and i only recently found out that some hair dyes aren't vegan. i've found one at chemist warehouse for 13 bucks but the old dye i was getting was like 3 dollars a box, and i was wondering if anybody knew about anything else in that price range as i'm broke but simply don't look good with blond hair, lol. thanks in advance!!! ❤️
