Question What are your AI narrator "tells?"

My son and I are currently listening to The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection on Spotify together, narrated by Oliver Thompson. I wanted to introduce him to Sherlock Holmes while we were on a long car trip this past winter, and this was one of the first (if not THE first) result that popped up when I searched for a Holmes audiobook on Spotify. Now we listen to it whenever we're in the car together, but we've both begun to suspect that Oliver Thompson is not a real person.

At first we thought the narrator just had some quirks. He did nothing to differentiate the voices of the different characters which made the story hard to follow at times, but I initially just chalked that up to the book being public domain and the narrator being an amateur. But then, as we went on, there was the occassional odd line reading. An emphasis on the wrong word. A character would plead for their life as if asking for directions. Phrases like "Hullo! Hullo! Hullo! What's this?"--where a normal human would like read it "hullo, hullo, hullo," said quickly, but Thompson reads it as if Holmes is shouting three different greetings to three different people. The audiobook was published in 2024: was this an artifical voice still on the edge of the uncanny valley, or was it just a guy reading 65 hours of Holmes stories on autopilot?

The idea that this could potentially be AI makes me angrier than I expected it to, particularly because, if it is in fact AI, there's no indication of such. The narrator has a normal human name: I want to listen to a normal human reading the story. I don't want to be giving money and exposure, however small it may be, to some tech bro who's dumping public domain works into an AI speech bot and publishing the results. By the time we started suspecting this narrator might be AI (which took me an embarrassingly long time, in retrospect) we were already something like 35 hours in an my son didn't want to switch to a different audiobook. We've made a game of shouting "AI!" whenever Oliver Thompson says something a little off, but each time we do that I get mad all over again at the enshittification of beloved things. Or, perhaps more specifically, the monetization of the enshittification of beloved things. Because even a flawless reading would be like consuming empty calories for the soul.

Oliver Thompson: if you're a real person, I apologize. But I really don't think you are.

I can only assume this is a growing issue in the audiobook space. I don't know if other people are as anti-AI narrator as I am, but I would like to avoid listening to another AI audiobook if I can help it. Do you have any tips or tricks for identifying AI narrators? Any publishing companies to avoid? Any obvious tells? Thank you.

EDITED TO ADD: There are good comments on what to listen for to identify AI (thank you!), but this post is also getting a lot of downvotes, so maybe those who support and those who oppose AI-narration are evenly split?

Question Career pivot to audio narrator

Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you have pursued a career in audio narration? I’ve been considering it for quite some time, but I have no idea where to get started.

I’m looking to make a career pivot to something that brings peace and balance in my life. I understand no job is perfect, but any tips, support, or kind words of encouragement would be super helpful.

App Question What is the best Audiobook service for the visually impaired?

I am coming to Reddit for help with this one. A bit of an SOS.

In the past four years of my living overseas, my older sister has lost all of her vision as a part of her disorder. She was an avid reader and since I have moved back she has been extremely depressed about losing this one joy of hers. I am a reader as well but I don’t use any of the audiobook apps for reading.

Her vision is not the only thing she has lost as it has caused early onset dementia as well. So, figuring out how to navigate this has been beyond her own means to say the least.

I have been looking around but have found it difficult to get any clean answers. I need to help her set up an account or multiple with different services for audiobooks, but the catcher is it needs to work well with visual impairment tech that exists natively on her phone. She has an iPhone 16, and most apps should work with the system but I have found some apps just cannot be navigated using it.

Does anyone here have experience using audiobook services on phones or iPads or experience with visually impaired persons who use audiobook apps? Or if you are blind, do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for taking the time to read and drop any suggestions. Just a desperate sister looking to help🙇🙇🙇

Recommendation Request Audiobook recs for a road trip

I’m going on a long road trip and thought it would be cool to try and listen to a lot of new books. I would prefer something captivating and easy to follow along so I don’t get bored or confused. Also something around 7 hours ish would be nice but honestly I’m open to any length as long as it’s interesting! I’m going to be in the car in total (over the span of 10ish days) for around 40 hours. So multiple recommendations and long recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Recommendation Request Primal hunter/cradle like audiobooks

Upvotes

Looking for more good audiobooks like the below. I’m not really sure exactly what I’m looking for honestly lol so sorry about that. Any recs like them would be super cool. I really enjoy the super OP MC’s that deal with gods or deities. constantly trying to get stronger and progress. Weapons are fun for mc but I prefer they atleast use magic. And not really romance genre but a like small sub plot ? I prefer my mc to have a significant other.

Promotion Across the Screen - PROMO CODES

US & UK Audible promo codes are available! Comment below or DM me for a code - please specify which region.

Across the Screen, by Elaine Lawence

Narrated by Kat Dawson (that's me!)

[Narrator's note - I absolutely adored working on this book! Low spice, high tension, lots of comic relief and fantastic banter!]

They had a rhythm—messages, meetings, easy banter through a screen.
Safe. Controlled. Distant.

Then one night erased the distance.
And a moment erased the control.

Ava Harper and Cole Maddox find their lives suddenly more intertwined than either of them expected.
And everything changes.

Across the Screen is a contemporary, slow-burn romance about emotional intimacy, proximity, and the connections that grow stronger once distance disappears.

Giveaway Seeking ARC Listeners for ASTRA AWARD-Nominated Murder Mystery Dramatized Audiobook

Hi everyone! I’m Greta Craig, the creator of the full-cast dramatized audiobook anthology series, Violet’s Shadow Murder Mysteries

I have a limited number of FREE Advance Review Copies (ARCs) for anyone who would like to listen to the entire upcoming standalone 2nd audiobook in the series, The DeMondego Diamond, extra early and for free in exchange for an honest, spoiler-free review on Apple Podcasts.

THE SYNOPSIS: A group of college friends reunites at a wedding - eight years after one was convicted of murdering another. Everyone’s a suspect in this dual timeline dark academia whodunit set in a Gilded Age estate in the American South. Think Agatha Christie’s mystery plotting meets the relationship drama of Tell Me Lies.

  • Format: Complete, standalone audiobook (you do not need to listen to Book 1 first).
  • Style: Full-cast performance with a central narrator and cinematic sound design
  • Runtime: 6 hours, 28 minutes.
  • Delivery Method: Delivered as a private premium podcast RSS feed (playable in Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, etc.). Note: Standard .m4b/.mp3 files are not provided for this ARC.

HOW BOOK 1 PERFORMED:

  • Nominated for Best Scripted Series at the 2025 Astra Awards (Hollywood Creative Alliance)
  • Featured by Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and Pocket Casts
  • An official selection at the Aesthetica Film Festival
  • A Spotify 2025 “Instant Hit” and “Most Shared” show
  • Maintained a 115% average episode consumption rate across all chapters

HOW TO CLAIM YOUR FREE ARC AUDIOBOOK:

Please note: review slots are limited and will be granted on a first-come basis.

  1. Go to gretacraig.com/arc
  2. Listen to the 1:20 trailer or the clip of the first 10 minutes to get a feel for the story and sound design.
  3. If the mystery intrigues you, enter your first name and email on the sign up form and I will send a private RSS listening link to your inbox. You can then listen in the native Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, or Overcast apps.

NOTE: I manually review all submissions and will approve your access within 24 hours.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Review Platform Requirement: To support the launch, we are looking for ARC listeners who have the ability to leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (even if you choose to listen on Pocket Casts or Overcast). Audio reviewers, book bloggers, etc who publish reviews on external websites/socials are exempt from this requirement.
  • Zero Spam Guarantee: Your email will only be used twice: once to deliver your secure feed link, and once as a polite reminder to post your review.

PERSONAL NOTE:
This is an entirely independent, self-funded project. Everyone who worked on it is a real person (no AI was used) and was paid a professional fee upfront (with the exception of myself). It’s my long-term dream to build a fully profitable fiction studio that can consistently hire and collaborate with actors, artists, musicians, etc. This project involved:

  • 11 Professional Actors paid for all rehearsal and studio time.
  • 1 Visual Artist commissioned for the physical, hand-painted watercolor cover art.
  • Multiple Independent Musicians paid licensing fees for their soundtracks.
  • 1 Local Professional Studio, including 2 Recording Engineers, where the cast recorded their scenes together, in person.
  • Myself (writer, director, producer, narrator, sound design, mixing and mastering).

Thanks so much!

Promotion I created a psychological audio drama exploring the intersection of human subconscious and AI

Hi everyone, I recently worked on a project titled "Connected in Logic". It’s a one-act psychological play that dives into the dialogue between a creator and AI, questioning human limitations, creativity, and the "Melody of Rain".

I used Blender for the visual atmosphere and spatial audio techniques to bring this concept to life. If you are into philosophy, AI ethics, or atmospheric audio dramas, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!

Question Patreon - YouTube

Do any of you listeners use Patreon to listen to audiobooks/stories? There are a few channels there and some with many members.

Also, endless audiobooks/stories on YouTube and all free. Most I think low quality and AI of some form. But this may suit some people. Does anybody use YouTube.

And I am surprised there is a Reddit audiobook/story section. Or is there? Free or paid?
