Meta BotBouncer has been added to the subreddit.

Well, I guess we're active enough to be getting reposts and bot spam now. Thank you to everyone who reported the suspicious post that popped up recently. (And I'm sorry to anyone who engaged with it genuinely).

I had kept this subreddit without strict karma requirements to participate because I understand that many people make an account for the first time or create a throwaway to post here about sensitive topics. I didn't want to discourage people from getting the support they needed. Sadly, I guess that means bots look at this sub that now has ~ 22k weekly visitors and decide it's a good place to farm karma.

Going forward, I have installed BotBouncer here, which is a community tool that will whisk any suspected bot content to modqueue for manual review. Suspected bot content is identified based on post/comment patterns and cross-referenced with an inter-subreddit list of identified bots. I intend to manually review flagged content for now, but if I evaluate BotBouncer to be accurate, I may eventually allow BotBouncer to delete and ban without mod input. If that does happen, please send in modmail if you are banned in error.

I hate that I have to do this, and Reddit itself really needs to do a better job of getting rid of bots. But without that support, we will continue to try and keep this space as person-centric as possible. Thank you!

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) Am i aroace?

I know it might be a stupid question, but I recently found out that I show all signs (i think) of being aroace, though a month ago I had a crush on a girl. I know it was a romantic crush. It ended when I started thinking about my future and things like that, and I realized I actually don't want a relationship. Not in a hateful way toward couples, but I just found out I don't want a partner myself. And then, somehow, I lost every single bit of attraction toward that girl. I know it's only been a month and it could just be a random break from having crushes, but I think I might be aroace because it has never happened to me before to lose attraction like that—going from a strong attraction to absolutely nothing in few minutes. Also, I don't think I've ever felt sexual attraction, so at least I'm asexual. I'm 14, and a lot of things change at this age, and as I said, I feel like I have all the signs of being aroace. So do you think that I'm aroace? Is it even possible to become aroace and not be aroace from birth? And is there someone who experienced something like this?

Does anyone else crave a romantic relationship and genuinely hate not feeling romantic feelings? (Lwk just ranting and i wanna see if anyone else experiences this)

so like i’m at the age where alot of people i know either have crushes or have partners, right? and then when I see couples or even hear my friends talking abt their crushes, i always feel really sad, like im missing out on something. it feels like that one Mitski song, “Crack Baby” where she says “crack baby, you dont know what you want, but you know that you had it once and you know that you want it back” and idk what romantic relationships are like bc ive never experienced one, but deep down i crave one so badly, and i feel kind of empty ngl.

im also thinking that i may feel like this empty feeling is because of the familial love that i kinda dont have bc i dont talk to my family that much, bc im the youngest, so i cant have a convo with anyone in my fam without being lectured.

aside from that I have alot of friends, and i have very deep platonic connections with them to the point where im often holding hands or cuddling with them, and i love it. i’ve been considering the fact that i am most definitely bellusromantic. idk man its been rlly wierd.

but yeah, to summarize, am i the only one who feels how i feel? like i wanna know that this happens to others.

Discussion We need rep of other types of aros/aces in media

Okay so I’m really happy just in general that we have aro/ace, aro, and ace characters in media. Peridot from Steven Universe, Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, Mammon and Octavia from Helluva Boss, love to see it! My problem? All ace rep I see is sex repulsed and all aro rep I see is romance repulsed. Don’t get me wrong, obviously sex and romance repulsed people exist and still deserve rep. But I’ve never seen rep for anyone who’s not sex or romance repulsed. There’s so many micro labels that aren’t seeing the light of day in media. I myself am aroace and while I’m sex repulsed, I’m okay with dating. I’m still aro. I wanna see that. I wanna see demisexuals. I wanna see cupioromantics. Just something that isn’t just another sex/romance repulsed character. Even if it’s a one shot character with two lines, I’ll take those breadcrumbs.

I’m sure there are characters like this. If there are, please tell me. And they need to be CANONICALLY aro or ace or aroace.

Edit: I just remembered with Todd from Bojack Horseman, Emily tells him that some aces do have sex. So that’s one really great example. Yeah Todd isn’t interested in sex at all but I do like that they at least acknowledged that some aces aren’t sex repulsed.

Discussion Something I Sometimes Remember

Sometimes I randomly remember that there were probably some obvious signs of me being on the aromantic spectrum (specifically possibly Cupioromantic) since I was a kid (I’m currently 25 years old). I remember as a kid wanting to get married and having kids when I grew up, but at the same time never really experiencing attraction in a romantic way towards people, wether it be celebrities or people I knew in my personal life as a child such as classmates or friends or anything like that. My first “crush” was when I was 13 years old and it was Cress from Pokémon, but part of me feels like it was also partially an obsession/hyperfixation due to my autism and ADHD, though I’m certain that at least part of it was genuine romantic attraction towards the character. I Don’t Know, I just wanted to ramble about this, thanks for reading this if you do LMAO.

Discussion Writing Advice for a Story

I'm (23MtF) am writing an action sci-fi story. One of the characters is an aroace character. Part of their backstory involves them being a surrogate mother at one point. This character was raised as a prodigy and a perfectionist by her parents, never grew up with any genuine platonic relationships and eventually wanted to raise a child to give them the familial love she never got.

When I explained this plot to a few friends of mine, they thought it was weird that an aroace character would want children/want to go through pregnancy in general. I always assumed wanting children was mostly a separate thing from sexual/romantic relationships, but I'd like to hear yall's opinion on the topic as well.

a-spec looking for Help/Advice How to make ace friends?

Hi everyone. I've always wondered if asexual community forums exist and if it's possible to meet people there for friendship or relationships.

A long time ago, I realized that this whole topic of sex just doesn't matter to me. At first, I thought it was just a very low libido because I've never felt or desired anything like that. But when talking to people, there was always this "before/after" aspect that almost made me sick because of the things they said, and every time I thought, "Is it really impossible to just talk/hang out?". This applies to both girls and guys, and at a certain point, I simply stopped looking for new acquaintances because I got tired of it.

But now, thinking back on this topic, I want to ask you: do you know of any such forums and how to find them? ʕ´• ᴥ•̥`ʔ

Discussion Thoughts on why we hate "it's just a phase" so much

Hi lovely aro/ace people!

I know many of us hate hearing the comment "being aro / ace is just a phase, you just haven't met the right person yet". This is like saying to a gay person "being gay is just a phase, you just haven't met the right person of the opposite sex yet". Very ignorant and offensive words. I think most people in lgbt+ communities will hate to have others dismissing their identities like that, but I feel like we aro/ace folks hate it a bit more than others.

So I try to rationalize why is that so using my own experiences. When I first encountered the aro/ace terms and definitions, immediately I think that I'm ace, more specifically aegosexual. The moment I saw the description of aegosexual I was like THIS IS IT, THIS IS TOTALLY ME, and I was so happy and proud to have found the right label for myself, that can accurately depict my experiences and let me know that there's a community for me, that I am not alone.

On the other hand, I was struggling to understand what romantic attraction is and where could I possibly fit on the aro spectrum. I doubted myself for being aromantic and feel like an imposter at times. This is because I genuinely couldn't figure out what romantic attraction is so I can't tell whether I experience it or not, but I just know that saying I am aromantic feels right for me and I want to belong to the aro community.

Okay. Let's say I was 99% sure I'm ace but only 50% feeling like I'm aro back then. People say "It's easy to know something exists and feel them, but it's hard, if not impossible, to assert that something do not exist, and will never exist." Because who knows what will happen in the future. I may feel sexual attraction for someone tomorrow, just like the world can also explode tomorrow. The very slightest chances are there. I would say I am usually a confident person for most parts, and do not waver when people challenge my beliefs. So if I was told "being asexual is just a phase for you! You just haven't met the right person you'd like to bang yet!" I would laugh it off, think the person making this statement is ignorant and who are they to tell me what I think. I will have more of disdain than anger in me.

However, if someone tells me "being aromantic is just a phase for you! You just haven't met the right person you'd fall in love with!" This is when I will feel wronged, offended and probably angry. I will get protective and want to defend my identity, the identity that I myself is also unsure of and still exploring, but is so precious because I finally found it after all the hard time and effort, and I know I want to have it. It's like... THIS IS ALREADY CONFUSING ENOUGH FOR ME! Just DON'T judge or criticize me when IM ALREADY STRUGGLING!

What I'm trying to say is, I feel like at least for myself, I feel more offended, upset, or even threatened by people dismissing my identity, when I myself am more insecured about that identity. And I think it's so understandable that aro/ace people may feel more insecured, just because we're so "invisible" in mainstream media with very limited representations, and again, that "it's hard to prove something doesn't exist".

Please know that I am just saying this for myself, I am not saying that insecurity is the sole reason behind the anger elicited by the "just a phase" statement for everyone. But if you are, just like me in the past, wondering why I get so distressed when hearing that just phase statement, maybe you can consider my reasoning. For me, I would say it's usually hard for me to admit that I'm insecure about something, because it feels like exposing my vulnerable part and makes me anxious. And having people point out my insecurities make me even more insecured and want to escape. However, I also realize that accepting and facing my own insecurities is the way to deal with it because I need to know my problem before I can confront it.

So, to all aro/ace friends who are reading this and can resonate with me, who might be questioning ourselves / feeling like an imposter / doubting our own identities / hoping to get some validation, I just want to tell y'all, WE REALLY ARE VALID! This is none of other people's business and no one ever can invalidate our feelings and identites! If I feel like AroAce is the best label for me at the moment, then I am! If rude people come to me and say Nah that is just a phase for you, well, let them go fk themselves. Shouldn't be wasting my time and emotions to argue with some ignorant people who is not living my life.

And to the people who may be thinking "what if I really turn out to be the imposter, what if I really am just allo..." Hey, just relax! Even if we experience the attractions differently and shifted across the spectrum in the future, there's nothing to worry about. That doesn't make your aro/ace identity any less valid now. No one is going to point their finger at you and say "haha! I knew you were a LIAR! YOU WERE JUST STRAIGHT TRYING TO BE SPECIAL! I KNEW aroace was just a phase for you, I got it right! You DUMBDUMB!" I mean... even if someone really do so, they are stupid and again, we can just let them go fk themselves. You won't have to kneel down and weep "I'm so SORRY I was LYINGGGG, being aroace was really just a phase for meeee, I turned out being allo, I betrayed you guys I am so SORRYYY I need to cut my pinky finger to compensate my sins😭", that's not true LOL. Aro/ace communities are not cults that you can't leave once you entered, and you really don't have to justify or prove yourselves if you find another label more suitable for you.

And I like to think that "Once an aro/ace, always welcomed by other aroaces." I mean, I am quite convinced that allo people just will never even suspect they might be on the spectrum. That's why people also say "if you are questioning you may be aro/ace, you probably are".

At this moment, I recognize myself as aromantic. I would say I am 98% on the aro side of the spectrum. If one day I miraculously suddenly experienced romantic attraction, lets say I shifted to 80% allo side of the spectrum, I really don't think I will "became allo and got kicked out of the aro community because I was a fake aro", lol. I would probably say "hi guys I found out I'm grey / demi / arospike / shifting towards the allo side now, I experienced romantic attraction for the first time, and it was like this: ..."

And I guess there will be people who are very grateful to have someone who is also aro/ace to describe what attraction really feels like for them.

Lots of love, I wish everyone to have inner peace and self affirmation in our mind 🤍💜💚🖤

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) I don't know anymore

I'm a 14 year old girl and I don't think I've ever had a crush and I'm not sure if I'm aroace or just a late bloomer but I've felt very strong attraction to people I just don't know in what way (I don't think romantically) but it's always girls.

I don't know if this is a crush or not but there's this girl I was best friends with for years and we slowly grew apart but we talk sometimes and we're still kinda friends and whenever I talk to her it makes me so happy I feel like crying sometimes and whenever I think of her it makes me sad because she probably doesn't think about me at all. We really only talk when she realises that I'm struggling but we don't see eachother because we're in different classes but she always makes me feel better. Sometimes I cry sometimes because I feel lonely and she used to be my closest friend and she's the only friend I've ever really connected with. She also stood up for me when a girl in our old class used to bully me.

I also don't know how I feel about the other girl because even though she was so mean to me I tried to ignore it and kept trying to be friends with her and I hated it but I couldn't help it. I recently saw it was her birthday and I remembered her. It's only been a year since we were in the same class and school but I find it hard to remember her face and I completely forgot she existed. I don't know if that's just my brain trying to cope or something.

I'm really not sure if either of them are crushes. (I don't think so I just need opinions)

I don't know if any of this make sense I've just been having a bit of an identity crisis wondering if I might be aroace or bi or lesbian and I'm kinda desperate for answers. If anyone has any advice please help!! 🥹

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) Can you like how people look and be aro/ace at the same time?

Hi guys! I’m definitely a little confused about myself right now. I’ve liked people and have been in relationships before, but they’re more limerence than anything. I’ve always kind of had a feeling that everyone else around me is more interested in relationships than I am, but I’ve just now started to consider there’s a possibility that I may be aro/ace. I like the idea of a relationship, I think romance movies are AWESOME, but I’m not sure that I’d want to be in one of those situations.

I just have one question, is it possible to have physical attraction and still be aro/ace? — Sorry if this question seems offensive to anyone, I’m just genuinely confused! :)

Like I can look at someone and think “Oh this person is handsome/pretty.” but I wouldn’t want to date them or have a sexual relationship with them. Then again, I could just be confused because I’m young, and it’s a possibility that I also just don’t like relationships because of all the bad ones I’ve seen.

But, anyways! If anyone could answer my question that would be great! Thank you, goodbye!

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) Am i aroace?

recently i've been thinking about my identity, i think being in a relationship seems nice, but in reality i just dont feel like im that confident to be in a relationship, i just dont like the idea if i was in a relationship in a sexual and romantic way with someone (with any gender), the thought of it just gets me uncomfortable
