DISCUSS FUTURE A future ArmA plot that exploits the DNA of the series and its most popular mods (like Antistasi) would be grand

Upvotes

Just finished the Resistance campaign of CWR3, the second time after my original play through in 2002. It seems to me that (even though the series has always offered more possibilities) small-scale infantry battles in a "you're the underdog"-kind of setting are at the very heart of ArmA's DNA. The popularity of mods like Antistasi reaffirm this.

And I'm sure you've seen that BI did a poll where most players favoured a modern scenario over a Cold War one.

So … how about a Cold War 2.0 plot? Firmly rooted in the ArmAverse with fictional mini-nations finding themselves at the heart of geopolitical conflict?

Here's an idea:

The year is 2028.

You play as the Maldener Ian Gastovski, son of Cold War veteran James. The flight school you had inherited went bankrupt during the pandemic. Looking for a new purpose in life, and influenced by your father's war stories, you travelled to Ukraine and joined the International Legion in 2022.

There, you've seen modern warfare in all its aspects, and become particularly adept at drone and ambush tactics. After your return to your native Malden Islands, your expertise inevitably leads to your being recruited by Britain's MI6.

In the meantime, a pro-Putin populist government has taken over the Hvalland archipelago, an island nation situated in the Northern Atlantic between the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Its 33,000 inhabitants have cultural and historical links with Denmark, Norway, Scotland; a Western allies force stationed there during WW2 also left its mark on the region.

The new government leaves the European Union and embarks on a massive campaign of exploiting the country's richness in oil and fish, creating tensions within the populace. In order to secure its power, the regime eventually invites Russia's PMC Valkyrie to the country—an offshoot of the notorious mercenary army PMC Wagner.

Soon, the behaviour of the mercenaries towards the Hvallanders sparks an opposition movement.

The strategic location of the islands in the so-called GUIK Gap is not lost on the West nor the East, and world leaders are tripping over themselves to offer clandestine military aid.

The leaders of the resistance movement are split, however:

  • Should they appeal to America's aid and risk being taken over by an increasingly expansionist government that views foreign aid as entirely transactional?
  • Should they appeal to the aid of a Europe divided and pre-occupied with stabilising Ukraine, at the risk of being left hanging?
  • Or should they take up the wild card and accept China's offer, unsure whatever will come of it?

In this explosive climate, you're sent on an undercover fact-finding mission to Hvalland to meet up with the resistance leaders. Shaping their decisions with your advice, you're wondering what your role will be in the end: A military advisor fighting in someone else's war? A rogue agent fighting for the islanders' freedom? A puppet manipulated by resistance members pursuing their own ends?

— — —

I think a plot like this would play to the strengths of ArmA and revive the resistance flair, whilst also allowing for a campaign that could see it all—from small scale ambush tactics ("one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist") over a professionalising resistance movement all the way up to a full-scale intervention by world powers.

The kind of gear available to the player would range from second-rate equipment at the start to the most modern stuff available, depending on your progress and decisions in the game.

And at the risk of patting myself on the back, I do think a plot with some "grounding" in actual world events would be nice for a change. Personally, I liked the Cold War-style setting of OFP/ArmA1 and ArmA 2 better than ArmA 3, where Iran was suddenly an interventionist world power.

What do you think of this?

Or would you prefer a more conventional large land war setting?

Most of the time I can avoid contact but it’s almost inevitable that I will get into heavy contact, sometimes well before I reach the objective. Last mission I fought back to one of the LZ’s hoping I could call for helicopter pickup but no luck.

For those who know what I'm talking about, this will surely bring back good memories.

There is still a lot of work to do, but I have been working on the conversion of this 61x61km plot of land for more than a year now and it is looking more beautiful every day.

P.S.: The last image is imagining doing something similar to what "World in Conflict: Seattle" was, but inside Arma Reforger.

The treaty contained an agreement between Poland and the newly formed government of Livonia, wherein this agreement provides for the approval of the border, the recognition of Livonia as a sovereign state, and the withdrawal of all Polish military forces and administration from the territory.

"Not only did they start the bloodshed with their aggression, but they are also playing the scapegoat while casting us as the wolf. This disgrace upon the Pole will remain and be passed down to the next generation; this unhealed wound, from which bitterness pours out, will lead to something the West will fear, and it will only realize it when it is too late."

S.W.A.G is a fictional faction based on USAF PJ/CCT/STS groups. More than capable fighting on their own but are even better paired with another force!

I'll continue working on it of course, especially to cut dependencies down.

( Long intro is so players can load in before the cinematic starts )

This is an early version of my intro cinematic for the Northern Irish Detective scenario Im working on. I've also included a small snippet of the establishing story. Thanks for all the support on the recent post, It's given me a huge drive to complete this, love yall arma community.

[ACT ONE]

American Detective “Michael Carter” arrives in Donah, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. The year is 1972, one of the most deadly years in all of Northern Irish History. A recent and controversial government policy covered up by MI6 has allowed American detectives to ‘advise’ on the situation in Northern Ireland. Michael has been brought to Fermanagh to assist in homicide investigations involving the ongoing violence. He arrives to meet his characteristic and quirky partner Det. Sean Gallagher. They meet in a local bar where Sean drinks. The two make acquaintances before Sean begrudgingly sets off from the bar, leaving to begin their investigation. On the other side of the road stands their investigation. A townhouse boarded up with the words “TRAITOR” splashed over the front door.

REFORGER Single player scenarios with content?

Just wondering if Reforger has any single player scenarios where you start with a squad on a conquer the map style game?

Ideally, I would love if there’s a WWI / WWII version of this but I can’t seem to get that working… it seems weirdly more convoluted than Arma 3.
