I have ADHD and hyperfocus is very much a thing for me. About two years ago, that hyperfocus latched onto fishkeeping. Freshwater tanks, aquascaping, learning species, obsessing over parameters, all of it. It started with my axolotl, and somehow spiraled into me now running eight tanks. Bettas, guppies, neon tetras, shrimp, plus my axie. It’s a lot. Honestly, it’s kind of a mess.

The problem is that my hyperfocus comes and goes. I’ll get completely obsessed with building a new tank, researching everything, spending money I probably shouldn’t, tweaking every detail. Then, eventually, the hyperfocus fades. When that happens, everything slows down and maintenance suddenly feels overwhelming instead of exciting.

The thing is, I’m still responsible. The animals don’t care if my brain checked out. So I take care of all of them, no matter what. On top of that, I also have four dogs, two cats, and two ferrets, so it’s not like responsibility is optional in my life.

That part actually isn’t even what drives me the most insane.

What really gets to me is how completely incapable I seem to be of doing tank maintenance without screwing something up. Especially water changes. Every single time, I swear to myself that this time I’ll do it properly. I won’t leave a tank filling and walk away. I won’t come back to a flooded room. I won’t drop a bucket of water everywhere. I won’t forget the water conditioner. I won’t forget to turn the heater off first.

And yet, somehow, I always do. I’ve flooded rooms, spilled buckets, forgotten conditioner, and yes, I’ve cracked or exploded heaters because I forgot to unplug them before a water change. It’s not just messy, it’s stressful and expensive, and it makes me feel like I can’t be trusted with something I genuinely care about.

I end every maintenance session exhausted, angry, and feeling like an absolute idiot. I just keep thinking, why can’t I do this right for once? Why is something so basic so hard for me to execute without chaos?

I guess I’m just venting, but also genuinely wondering if anyone else here deals with this kind of thing. ADHD plus fishkeeping, or ADHD plus any hobby that requires routine and focus. If you’ve found any systems, tricks, or workarounds that actually help, I’d really love to hear them. I’m just really upset right now and feeling pretty defeated.

Saw this on reddit in catsjoy sub. Where there's an hollow cavity in the tank where a cat can lie down and watch fishes from very close.

My question is does it stress the fishes cuz of a smaller area to swim in? And the cat being this close to them. I am not saying what's wrong of right just curious about this interaction.

I thought this place was solidly anti AI, specially given rule 10, so I'm disappointed and a little confused at opening it today and seeing the AI generated electric blue acara stare back at me when I opened it.

Is it possible to change it to some human-made art or perhaps a photograph? I generally enjoy this place and would rather keep lurking and sometimes posting here rather than having to leave due to the presence of AI.

I have a breeding pair of bristlenose plecos in my 55-gallon tank. Their first batch of babies are now about 1–1.5 inches, and I’ve had them listed online for about a month with no luck finding buyers.

Now I’ve got a second batch that just hatched, and more fry will be coming out of the cave soon.

I contacted my local fish store and they offered me 30% of their retail price in store credit (not cash) for the plecos.

Do you guys think that’s a fair deal, or should I keep trying to sell them privately? Any advice from people who’ve dealt with this would be appreciated 🙏

I came home from work and the tank was fine. I started washing the dishes and heard water gushing. My first thought was oh someone is in the shower? After a few minute goes by I decide to check to see who is in the shower because my kids are outside. I walked in to this nightmare😭😭 it was a pain to clean up. My son’s mattress was actually right in front of it on the floor and boy when I tell you that mattress soaked up 90% of the water… it was like a sponge and so difficult to move. Walking in to this scene I was shocked. I froze for a good minute just watching the water rush out not knowing what to do. Then I sprint into action and started siphoning the water into a bucket to pour in the toilet to help with the volume of water coming out. After the pressure slowed down I started fishing out my snails , plants and fishes. I crammed everyone into my 20 gallon long tank for now. Although this sucked big time I’m glad it wasn’t my 60 gallon that cracked. After trying to figure out how this cracked formed. I eliminated my kids because they were outside. lol. I remember doing a water change the day prior and I used the bucket to rest on top of the tank to pour in 4-5 gallons of water I must’ve chipped it a little and it slowly started to chip more as the day progressed and finally gave out when I got home from work. Learn from my lesson y’all. Don’t be a dummy like me 🥲

Can the shrimps and guppies go together?

i'm in an apartment so going over a 40 gallon would be impossible for me at this point, but if i had a place big enough for a huge tank....

it's crazy to me they don't come with a warning sign about how long they live or how big they get because pet stores have em in these tiny 10 gallon holder tanks with a bunch of other fish

"do the research beforehand" i know, but we've all started somewhere, and sometimes that somewhere is an excited, but uninformed purchase for people

I'm not planning on buying gloflish, however I don't know much about them and find them interesting enough to look into.

To my knowledge they are genetically modified to glow under certain lights, which is a cool concept but can easily be done poorly and with little regard for the health of the animal.

I also heard they are sterile.

Are they prone to health issues? Is it possible to buy them ethically?

Are some species more likely to get sick than others?

We're going on a trip overseas via Emirates(with a layover in Dubai) and i want to know how, or if, i can bring these lil guys with me? Or if it'll be not a good idea to do that

I have a small tank that i kept dutch style, i have severe OCD and have kept the tank pristine for the last 2 years, with a single pair of friendly bettas that i intentionally selected to have the exact color pattern, they swim in manicured water with plenty of real plants around. My chinese inlaws whom are staying for the month when i was working go out and bought and 200$ worth of cheap fish and dump it into the tanks, the water is muddy, all the plant are floating on the top and my pair of fish is nowhere to be found, 2 bright neon plastics coral in the bottom and half a dozen dead fish floating in the tank, the automatic feeder yanked off and when i confront them about they call me childish and stupid and i should dump it out "to focus on work" and my fucking wife is saying bullshit about how they are showing that they care... What should i do now?( i haven't look at the tank again, it just make me hyperventilating and angry).

I thought that this would be a group that genuinely respects nature, but I found some channels that I’ve broken my heart recently.

The biggest disappointment was Tanks For Nothin.

I caught a weird vibe and I was trying to explore it, but there’s not a lot of information on him.

all I knew was that he came out the gate be making really good quality videos. Amazing music, and editing. Automatically fell in love with his videos and their slow relaxing nature…

But I started to wonder if they were even real? And then I realize that his channel is basically just a façade….

His channel is apparently to make cheap aquarium tanks? At least that’s what his bio says, but then he uses things like the 250$ Oase filter for his recent built… not even disclosing what filter he used. He just said “a filter”…

and then I took a good long look at his YouTube banner. It’s AI. Undoubtably. The fish are swimming in weird directions with weird shapes. And I have a hunch that maybe he’s using thing I had to create his videos too…

Not to make everything up, but for editing. He praised opera GX in a recent video and it’s just extremely disappointing. I feel like this community that supports environmental efforts. We’re all about nature anyway…. And I’m just hurt. does anybody else feel this way?

This is my 20g that I just scaped but I’m not 100% sure what fish to put in it. I know I want it to be a community tank with a schooling fish as like “the main attraction”. I want the schooling fish to be lively because I love seeing them swimming around. I plan on adding 2-3 mystery snails, 10 shrimp, and 5 Pygmy corys (maybe 6). Any ideas on what kind of schooling fish I should get?
