The more I think about it, the more Zuko just fits into their family so well. The way Zuko went to Sokka for advice on Katara. Their struggles as older brothers and older sons. A exiled prince and the son of a chief who was left behind because he was too young.

Seeing them build trusts as friends in the boiling rock episodes. Sokka trusting Zuko with Katara to face Azula. It really felt like Zuko was just fulfilling side quests to be likable to his future in-laws.

He just needed one more quest with GranGran!

Katara was studying hard for the medicinal track for water benders. She was capable of fighting, yes, and she knew that applying for the medic track was reminscient of when women water benders weren't permitted to learn combat techniques... but honestly she had always been more open to healing. Most people didn't even know she was combative.

Of course, not that the person in front of her knew anything about it.

"...Medicinal track. Nice." The words from Zuko, classic rich kid, gained nothing but her ire.

While medicinal practices were widely believed to be for Water Benders only, any bending could be used to aid the human body. Water was just naturally the best for it.

Meaning that Zuko was currently in the track with her.

Though it was open to all forms of bending, even non bending, she actually had no idea if he was a fire bender. Same way most people didn’t know she was a water bender.

To clarify, Bending was still an incredibly useful skill to have. It always would be. But these days with machinery, guns, lots of people didn’t see bending as the end all be all.

So if you had bending, you didn’t often talk about it. Braggarts tended to be put in their place easily.

Where was she?

Right, medicinal track.

She didn’t advertise that she could bend water, and she had no idea if Zuko had bending or not. Even though he was the son of a famous business tycoon, she… actually didn’t know much about him.

Point is, he had sat down in front of her and now they were talking. She didn’t like him, but at least he wasn’t being a creep. Plus, he seemed knowledgeable on things, which she could definitely use.

“Your necklace looks old, do you want me to buy you a new one?”

“Never talk me to again.” She stood up and left the man with an eyepatch, leaving him to look after her stuttering awkwardly.

Katara looked at the tv in the library (on mute currently) and briefly saw a headline about the Bkue Spirit and Painted Lady.

Two vigilantes. Criminals who took the law into their own hands. One wielded two blades, another seemed to be one with the mist. The news insisted they were working together. But in reality they had never met.

Because Katara was the Painted Lady.

When she was a child, she was never the outgoing type. The closest she had never done was save a kid from drowning, and that was only because of her bending, being close to the shore… and the fact that it had been an accident.

She had fainted from exerting herself before she could get a good look at his face, and when she woke up he was gone. Now she was N adult, and she was starting to think she had made it up.

Point is, she wasn’t some rogue Ner do well… she thought that was right.

But then she heard about the Blue Spirit.

A guy who had nothing but swords, and still helped people at risk to himself.

So she helped some people in secret, and it felt good… then she learned about the Painted Mary legend and worked through that.

Some people weren’t even sure she was real, and she perfected it that way. If she got caught she could be charged with something, and that would ruin things.

So she stayed in the shadows, did small minimal actions… things like that. She wasn’t a hero, not like-

So maybe going out and helping someone dressed in her alter ego was a bad idea. Mainly because the cops were currently trying to arrest her… and shooting at her.

She used the mist around her to make cover as she tried to get away, only for one of them to go after her.

And pull the trigger.

She thought she wouldn’t have enough time to block, only for the bullet to jam in the gun. The cop widened his eyes before being knocked out.

…The Blue Spirit had arrived.

The Blue Spirit stood in front of her, having helped her out when cops started shooting at them. He was an artist with those blades.

Now they were recovering in private. Katara… wasn’t sure what to do… right, she was the Painted Lady right now. “…You know I was wondering if you didn’t exist…”

Nothing but silence greeted her. “…Thanks for helping me… I actually started doing this because of you…”

He slowly turned and faced her, looking over her body. “…Oh, I didn’t get hurt, don’t worry.”

He backed away and made sure no one was listening before he sighed. “You shouldn’t talk so much. Voice recognition software is everywhere these days.”

Painted Lady could have smacked herself over the head. But she resisted it. He probably thought she was a joke right now. Ugh-

“You did well against those cops. Some of them were trained benders.” The compliment threw her off guard.

Benders could apply for jobs like anyone else, but to get permission to use their powers openly in the field like say a cop, they needed a license.

“You need to stop using your bending so visually, cops keep a database of benders so you’ll get cahght. I don’t think there’s many eye witnesses yet, so I think we can fix that.”

She paused as she watched him unsheath his blades. “I… I don’t think I can fight without bending, it’s pretty vital to my abilities… but I don’t wanna stop this either…”

Blue Spirit pointed his blade towards her. “Don’t worry. I think I can help you. I remember hearing reports that you were always appearing in mist?”

The other hero nodded. “Yeah… I read that the Painted Lady appeared in mists, so I…” Well he already knew. “…Bend the water droplets. Only works with thick fog and stuff where you can see it. Can’t really bend the air.” An awkward chuckle was replied too with quiet.

“Water is… the element of change. It’s fairly adaptable. Human bodies have eighty percent water, so if you concentrate you should-“

“You’re talking about Blood Bending.” Her voice has turned cold. “That’s forbidden unless-“

“Authorized by the government. The government that just shot at you.” Oh… was that a joke? “Regardless, you don’t have to bend their blood. Sweat, tears, if you’re smart about it you can become a master of hand to hand combat. And as long as no one sees you visbly bend water, it could play into your whole mystique and people will stop looking for a water bender. It’s not an official name, but it’s a subset of each bending ‘Silent Style’. Bending your element without letting anyone know you’re a bender. People have used it to become prodigies in the past. At least it’s theorized.”

Silent Style… wait… “So… you’re going to train me?”

“…That’s what I said. Well, I said I could help you, but it’s kind of the same thing.”

She couldn’t help but laugh. “You… you’re pretty funny.” She still felt weird about him knowing what she was now realizing was a vital secret to her identity…

Blue Spirit silently watched her before he held out his swords. “Fire Bending Silent Style, I can overheat the air around the blades. It makes upward strikes faster and attacks more deadlier. Plus at close range I can interfere with gun fire, which is how I caused the gun to jam. I manipulated the ignition. There, now we both know something vital about each other.”

“…You’re really nice to just reveal something like that.”

Blue Spirit titled his head at her. “…Thanks. Guess we’ll be teaming up for real.” He turned away and started walking. “I’ll make sure the coast is clear, we wait a bit, discuss our next plan, then we each head out.”

He was so in command, and sure of himself… so cool. “…You said you started doing this because of me?” The question made her slowly nod, hoping that wasn’t weird. “…That’s flstteirng, thank you.”

“Well, it was kind of inevitable. Someone sees a guy risk everything for other people, makes someone else do the same. An endless cycle of good deeds.” They both sat next to each other. “…Do you have a reason you do this? Or no?”

His emotionless mask was silent. “…I was saved… but I don’t know by who. I figured if I save as many people as possible, it would eventually repay her.”

…She might actually be developing a crush.

“I’m sorry…” Zuko stood in front of Katara. “I… I don’t know what I did wrong, I just… wanted to get to know you… I didn’t mean to insult you.”

Katara didn’t wanna give this guy the time of day… but he seemed genuine… ish. “…This was a gift from my mom before she passed away.”

She watched the horror seep into Zukos eye as he looked at her in pain. “I… I’m so sorry.”

That apology was enough to get his foot in the door. “…You’re not good with people, are you?” A head shake was all her answer was. “…Why did you come up to me to study?”

“I… you seemed confident… and I wanted to try caring for people instead of hurting them.” He said as Katara focused on his eyepatch. She was curious about it… but there was clearly a hard story behind how he was blind in one eye so…

Katara slowly sighed. “Okay, it was nice of you to offer, but some people like things for more than beauty. If you wanna talk with people, ask them about their accessories, that can usually be a good starter.” Zuko nodded, while Katara smiled. “You seem smart, just… bad at things. I can teach you, don’t worry. We’re gonna be taking medical classes together anyway.”

Zuko looked at here as they walked together.

*Katara… seems very nice. Like…* He thought back to when he had been saved as a kid by another kid. He went off to go get help, but the kid was gone by the time he got back. …*No way it’s her…* “So…What is your necklace made from?”

Katara smiled at him. “That’s a better question. You’re going to be great.”

In summation, Katara likes Blue Spirit, who is Zuko. Zuko likes Katara, who is Painted Lady. Katara saved Zuko when they were kids, but neither knows it was the other one, and neither knows the other one is the hero identity. They also both inspired the other to be a hero.

Clear? Yay.

They fight crime together.

Also Oozai is a crime boss, Azula works for him, yada yada.

I want to put the ATLA characters into the Mha universe and it follows cannon with Aizawa having to deal with more teenagers. So... thoughts? Katara, by the way, will be my girl to focus on. So, it will be all from her perspective.

Any really long and good Zatara fics? Preferably either in cannon, slow burn, enemies to lovers or Aus. Either way, as long as it's long and Zatara is end game... I'm happy.

Hi 🙋🏿‍♀️, so the title is basically the whole post. I'm currently working on a detailed analysis about Zutara, and I'm considering whether I should include the sequel comics in my analysis or even acknowledge them. I know they are very unpopular here, and within the general Avatar fandom, but I feel that some might view my essay as lacking credibility or being hypocritical if I still discuss The Legend of Korra while omitting the comics that bridge the gap between the two shows.

Like are you all in on FireLord and FireLady Katara? Do you gravitate towards Painted Lady and Blue Spirit stories? What about AUs where the war never happened and Katara is the princess of the Southern Water Tribe and he's the Firelord?

Personally I find I really like Firelord Iroh AUs that give Zuko a lil more of a leash to have Zutara adventures post series. I also really like Ambassador Katara stories as an envoy to the Fire Nation, after an amicable split with Aang as their needs weren't getting met as partners but they're still friends. (Also if there's some Taang on the side? Love that, please and thank you).

For fanart I LOVE Painted Lady/Blue Spirit things and when they wear remixes of each other's cultural dress.

I haven't seen a post about this yet, so I'm curious, what do you think about the changes that Netflix made when it comes to the Crossroads?

In the original:

• Katara goes to the Earth King as soon as she learns that Zuko is in Ba Sing Se, even if she's aware that it might lead to him being captured/tortured/killed
• Zuko is captured because of Katara betraying his whereabouts to Azula
• the last Zutara interaction was in that desert town during The Chase
• Katara is furious at Zuko; she thinks it's because of him that she was captured
• Zuko doesn't mention that he's not trying to capture the Avatar anymore
• he and Katara find that they have something in common (their mothers are gone because of the Fire Nation; true since episode one)
• Katara offers to heal Zuko's scar
• they're interrupted by Aang and Iroh
• Zuko tries to attack Aang (therefore considering him his enemy) but is stopped by Iroh
• Aang hugs Katara while glaring at Zuko
• Katara leaves with Aang without saying anything to Zuko
• later, Azula makes Zuko an offer to go back home
• Zuko takes it, and after the Crossroads, he admits he betrayed Iroh and is worried whether Ozai will restore his honor or not

It kind of makes me feel that, in that moment, he was chosing between:

• Azula and Ozai,
• Iroh, Katara (who was his enemy until 5 minutes ago), and Aang (who is still his enemy).

It's also hard for me to see it as him betraying the Gaang because he's proved he considers Aang his enemy, and Sokka and Toph weren't even there. He couldn't have betrayed Katara because they didn't make any deal. But from her POV, he DID betray her trust because she'd made a huge offer, and she probably believed he was going to change sides/stop fighting them, even if he never mentioned that. However, to be fair, Zuko did mention that he realized he could change his destiny, so even though he never explicitly said he would stop hunting the Avatar, Katara might have interpreted it that way.

In NATLA's version:

• Zuko knows that the Avatar is in the city. He has an opportunity to kidnap him but chooses not to
• Zuko knows that Katara is the Painted Lady
• it's kind of implied that they were working together for a while ("the Painted Lady and her sidekick")
• Zuko is captured because he tried to protect Katara,
• Katara looks furious when she learns the Blue Spirit's identity; she trusted him
• he admits he's not trying to capture the Avatar anymore
• he knows her name
• Zuko shares with her the history of his scar
• he is aware that what Ozai did to him was wrong ("no story they come up with is anywhere near as horrible as the truth"; "I look like a victim", "some part of me believed I deserved it")
• Katara shares with him her survivor guilt
• she says she's looking at someone in pain, someone who needs healing
• she makes an offer to heal his scar
• Zuko mentions he doesn't deserve to be healed; she says that he will
• they're interrupted by Sokka
• Katara immediately takes Zuko's side, mentioning that he's been captured while trying to protect her
• Aang is there, and Zuko doesn't even try to attack him. What's more, when Aang asks what Zuko is planning, he says they should just escape
• this kind makes Zuko a temporary ally to Team Avatar
• Zuko and Katara are separated by the Dai Li
• when he sees Azula, he tries to fight her but loses. She holds a flame next to his face (!), but in the end, Azula chooses not to burn Zuko
• she apologizes to him for making a noise when Ursa was trying to escape with them, and then mentions that Ursa wanted them to be together as a family
• she also mentions she's done with playing Ozai's games
• Zuko ends up choosing Azula
• when Katara and Azula are fighting each other, Zuko pulls them apart (which is interesting because they’re kind of connected by a stream of water, and even though it seems like Katara is going to win, Azula keeps shooting lightning at her. And water conducts electricity, so I wonder who Zuko was trying to save at that moment)
• Aang overpowers Azula but decides not to attack her while in the Avatar State. Azula uses this opportunity to attack him with lightning

And in this version Zuko DOES betray the GAang because they kind of made an alliance. Also, he and Katara were working together for a while now.

Basically, for me, it feels like in the original cartoon, Zuko betrayed only Iroh, OR he and Katara betrayed each other's trust (as she abandoned him as soon as she could). In NATLA, however, it feels like he betrayed Iroh AND Aang, Katara, and Sokka as well. In ATLA, he's motivated by getting back his honor and pleasing Ozai. In NATLA, it's like he wants to honor his mother's wish and stick with Azula. Also, it feels to me like in NATLA, Aang was 'killed' not because Zuko sided with Azula but because Aang chose mercy.

At least that's how it looks to me.

I also wonder whether Zuko's decision was partly motivated by the fact that Ozai didn't hesitate to hurt him, whereas Azula had exactly the same opportunity but ultimately chose not to.

They go out of their way to look for Zutara takes, and villainize us there as though they don’t make crazier or have wilder takes on Zutara.

But they get a pass because god forbid a Zutara shipper posts a wild zutara take by a canon shipper in the main sub.

If you don’t like opinions! Don’t go looking for it. And if you didn’t like a take or opinion, why post it on main sub to villainize a whole HUGE community of people?

What I find most interesting is that some of the details about Aang experiencing inner darkness from taking Ozai’s bending were something Aaron Ehasz spoke publicly about in 2024.

There was a point a few years ago where I noticed a trend of simple, slice of life, fun stories taking place on Ember Island, featuring around the Gaang's relationships with each other and how close they are. I remember them specifically cuz there was quite a few where Zuko used his firebending to help with the girls cramps/periods, and it reminded me of an ex of mine who used to get pretty heavy cramps and liked to have me lay in bed with her and hold a hot water bottle against her stomach and massage the base of her spine with my other hand.

Anybody know any good slice of life Zutara fics like that?

I just noticed that Netflix posted a video of Sokka and Suki from live action with ALL THEIR SCENES and then a video of Zuko and Katara, from the cave scene and I'm like... Its baiting us, but at least the people there recognize that the scene cave it's romantic as well as the moments between Sokka and Suki.

Oh and.... They didn't imply anything else about some other ship. You know what I mean.

I'm curious to know which Zutara headcanons you like the most or that live rent-free in your head.

​To open the discussion, here is mine (which is a bit bittersweet):

​Zuko never stopped loving her: I truly believe that Zuko died still in love with Katara. Throughout all the years that passed, he never stopped thinking about her, asking how she was doing, and following her life from afar. I imagine that when he went to the Southern Water Tribe (in The Legend of Korra), he was dying to see her, but at the same time very hesitant and insecure, since they hadn't spoken in so long.

​Katara's side is more complex: To be honest, her side of the story is a bit uncertain to me. She had three children with Aang, and sometimes I have a hard time (and even a distaste) imagining that she didn't fall in love with him at some point. I think it would be a very sad storyline for a woman to live her whole life without loving the father of her own children. So, I prefer to believe she found love there, which makes Zuko's lingering love even more intense.

​Izumi's origin: To me, the fact that his daughter is named Izumi (which means "fountain/spring of water") is 100% because of Katara. And, as a bonus: I love the theory that Zuko never married and that Izumi is actually Azula's daughter, whom he took in and raised as his heir.

Please tell me your freakout moments/theories, I need to obsess about this.

I am really hoping next chapter that maybe Zuko chooses a different tactic with her or goes vulnerable. I don't know if I can survive if he goes full nuclear mode.

Basically:

Azula does a surprise raid on the temple while Katara is asleep and bombs are being fired, and Zuko struggles to wake her up.

Zuko gets teary eyed while is Katara recounting the trauma of the loss of her mother.

Zuko pulling Katara back because she has a lot of momentum and energy on the command ship, to make sure she doesn’t fall and is okay.

Of course we get the Mr and Mrs Smith Zutara duo too.

These were the things they scrapped off. Very little, but we would appreciate it. Since they’ve DEFINITELY been lurking around our side of the fandom.

A friend of mine is trying to show it to me and they swear it exists but just can't find it.

Basically there is a fic called "I'm Still Here" by AO3 user owedbetter, and one of the scenes was eventually animated by Hayley Wong. Dante provided an audio to accompany it. This all happened during the pandemic.

I watched the movie a few months ago. I was unimpressed with the design at first, but after sitting with it for a bit, I can confidently say I hate it.

While I’m not a fan of the anime-fication of the Gaang’s facial features overall, I actually think most of the redesigns were upgrades. Zuko is an absolute 10/10, Toph 10/10, Sokka 9/10, and Aang 9/10 (the cape was a bit much). Katara’s design, on the other hand, flopped hard. 2/10.

It somehow regressed back to a Season 1 inspired look, but far less appealing. I don’t understand how we went from her incredible, badass Season 3 design to this.

This isn't about whether she looks conventionally attractive. It’s that the design feels like it intentionally strips away a lot of her individuality and femininity. If you took away her hair, she’d look almost indistinguishable from Aang. Where did her signature curls/ waves go? Why are her sleeves so oversized? Why are her pants baggier than Sokka’s while his neckline is actually more open than hers? The contrast in their design choices feels strange.

I’m not saying she needed to be hypersexualized. I think desexualized, practical designs can be great. But I also think female heroes can embrace femininity, strength, and individuality all at once. I expected Katara’s design to convey baddie warrior waterbending master energy. Instead, she’s giving young Mother Teresa.

Once again the franchise keeps boxing Katara into the role of the nurturing mother, healer, and self-sacrificing caretaker with newly added "trad wife" vibes. It's like they didn't want Katara to even look remotely single.

I hope this doesn’t offend anyone. My opinion has only gotten stronger the more I've sat with the design.

​I've been thinking a lot about the founding era of Republic City and how Katara, who was always a natural leader and the backbone of the revolution, ended up in such a domestic-and-healing-focused role, far away from the major political decisions of the city she helped build. I have a theory that mixes post-war bureaucratic chaos with a Zutara tension that, in my head, offers a really interesting perspective on what we're seeing in the new movie.

​It all started in the early years of Republic City. Aang needed to focus almost all of his energy on restoring Air Nomad culture and making diplomatic trips around the world. Meanwhile, Katara stayed in the city dealing with the hard part: daily bureaucracy and the legal foundations of the new nation. The thing is, these decisions didn't directly depend on the Avatar, but they needed political approval and constant funding. Who was the main founder and financier? Fire Lord Zuko.

​Because of this, Katara and Zuko frequently met for executive meetings. Over time, these quick encounters turned into long nights of work behind closed doors. We know how their dynamic works: they understand each other on a pragmatic level and share a deep baggage of trauma, responsibilities, and sacrifices that connects them in a unique way. Alone in those rooms, surrounded by maps and laws, their old chemistry didn't just return—it reignited with a dangerous intensity. What was strictly professional crossed a line of emotional intimacy.

​It didn't take long for the political elite to notice. Rumors began to circulate about the excessive closeness between the Fire Lord and the Avatar's partner. Such a scandal didn't just threaten their reputations; it threatened the very stability of the newborn United Republic. To protect Aang's dream, avoid an international political crisis, and escape from feelings that were getting out of hand, Katara made the hardest decision: she voluntarily stepped away from politics, adopting the public persona of "the Avatar's wife" and a healer.

​Zuko, on the other hand, deeply detested this distancing. He not only lost his main political partner, but the person who understood him better than anyone else, being forced to accept the cold, professional barrier that Katara built between them.

​And this is where I feel this theory really connects with the 2026 movie.

​In the scenes from the new movie, we see Zuko and Katara side by side, but avoiding eye contact at all costs. It's not just distancing; it's a palpable tension, the behavior of two people making a huge effort not to cross an invisible line.

​A detail that reinforces this for me is that hilarious scene where a spirit mistakes them for a couple. The shocked expression on their faces doesn't look like simple surprise, but absolute panic. It's almost as if they were screaming mentally: "Damn it! Shut up! We don't want to touch on that subject!". This gives the sense of desperation about exposing the elephant in the room, even accidentally, showing just how fragile the barrier they built really is.

​But the climax of this dynamic happens when Katara is in danger. When the threat appears, that silent agreement of distancing and avoidance instantly collapses. Zuko doesn't hesitate or think twice: he's the first one to rush to save her, running ahead with a fierce look and leaving Toph and Sokka eating dust far behind. To me, this visceral instinct proves that the feeling never disappeared; it was just buried by politics and duty.

​At the end of the day, my theory is that Katara didn't become a housewife because she lost her fighting spirit, but because she made a monumental sacrifice to keep world peace and not destabilize the world (and Aang) because of Zuko.

​I want to make it very clear that I'm not romanticizing this decision. To me, it's actually incredibly sad and painful that she felt the need to shrink herself and give up her political voice to protect everyone else.
