Technology YSK: If you are emotionally triggered and about to send a risky text, you can use an AI chatbot as a "logical firewall" to prevent self-sabotage.

Why YSK: Because emotional stress shuts down your prefrontal cortex (your logic center) and activates your amygdala (panic mode). You will make bad decisions. Running your planned reaction by an AI gives you an instant, emotionless sanity check that can save your relationship or your job.

We have all been there. Your partner does something weird, your boss sends a passive-aggressive email, or a toxic ex reaches out. Your heart rate spikes, your anxiety peaks, and you immediately draft a five-paragraph essay or a highly toxic, passive-aggressive reply. In that moment, your brain convinces you that sending it is a massive power move. In reality, it is an emotional suicide mission.

When you are spiraling, your friends are actually terrible sounding boards. Friends love you, so they will validate your crazy. They will say, "Yeah, send it! Put them in their place!" because they are operating on loyalty, not logic. You don't need a cheerleader in a crisis; you need a firewall.

Before you hit send, copy your text and the context, paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever bot you prefer, and give it a prompt like: "I am highly emotional right now. This is the context. This is what I want to say. Is this a rational response, or am I self-sabotaging? Give me the brutal truth."

An AI does not care about your feelings. It analyzes the semantics, the tone, and the likely outcome of your actions. It will bluntly tell you that your text makes you look insecure, needy, or unhinged. It acts as a temporary substitute for your disabled prefrontal cortex, filtering out the drama and helping you rewrite a response that actually protects your boundaries without making you look crazy.

Look, I know there is a lot of pushback against AI right now. But we are not talking about generating fake art or writing lazy essays. We are talking about using a machine's lack of emotion to your advantage at 2 AM when you are about to ruin your own life. It is a free, instant crisis-management tool.

Next time you are having an anxiety spike, don't dump your trauma on your partner and don't start a war you can't win. Vent to the machine, let it filter out your temporary insanity, and execute your next move with a clear head.

Ysk: it's far healthier to write down your thoughts in a private journal than to use a sycophantic chat bot.

100% this. AI will do two things when you are in a fit of rage:
1. Confirm your feelings, thereby stoking the flames
2. Save a transcript and psychological profile of your rant, giving officials the ammunition they need against you in court

Can we make a new rule that bans posts suggesting to use AI? Gd

I could be wrong but I feel like there used to be a rule against “YSK this website exists,” which is essentially what this post is.

Here's what ChatGPT thinks of that:

That comment is expressing frustration with the growing number of Reddit posts that recommend using AI as the solution to everyday problems. People who make comments like this often have one or more concerns:

— AI suggestions are becoming repetitive ("Just ask ChatGPT.").
— They can crowd out advice that teaches people how to do something themselves.
— AI answers can be wrong or overconfident, so recommending AI indiscriminately isn't always helpful.
— They may feel that recommending AI lowers the quality or originality of discussion.

On the other hand, others argue that AI is simply another useful tool—like Google, Stack Overflow, or Wikipedia—and that banning mentions of it would prevent genuinely helpful recommendations.

Most Reddit moderators prefer to judge posts based on whether they're useful and on-topic rather than banning references to a specific tool, though they might remove repetitive low-effort posts if they become a problem.

I'm in favor of proper AI and AI data center regulations. They should not harm the surrounding communities or ecology. AI needs true guardrails set by 3rd parties with the safety of humanity in mind.

With that being said, the tool is very helpful. It is going to stick around, because it's useful in business and in life. Abstinence is not going to work.

That doesn’t matter here. This is kind of a “Life Lesson” thing, and AI tends to favor the output you seem to want, so it can get things wrong, a lot.

Even if it were perfect, though, as stated above, it’s way more mentally healthy to vent to a journal/diary than use tools to say things you have no knowledge of, and are only being said because of an outside influence… Just seems inauthentic, to me. 🤷‍♂️

It's wrong, a lot, due to user error. It is also wrong occasionally on it's own. They have vastly improved in this area.

Is this true? I don't use it in that way, so I haven't looked into it.

So look into it.

Thanks.

I appreciate your support of proper regulation, but both your second paragraph and this post are doing the work of causing gen AI and all-purpose LLMs to become ingrained in the tech industry. It’s not inevitable.

And even if it were, this is not real advice. “YSK you can use a tool for exactly what Sam Altman wants you to use it for.” Okay…? Why is that a good substitute for a human relationship? Just because you and Grok want it to be so?

3

u/huskers2468 3d ago

I don't believe it's a substitute. It shouldn't replace human-to-human interactions.

People are human. They can be shy, nervous, or scared to talk to a person for help. An LLM can help take the fear away. It can provide information when a person does not want to talk to another person.

The issue I have with your argument is that it is putting the human-to-human interaction as always achievable with positive outcomes. I do not view them all in that way. This post was about using the LLM it as an emotional outsider to better their human interactions.

I don't care about Sam Altman, I don't use OpenAI. What I care about is my life and how the technology assists me and my family. My wife is starting a new business, she would not have done so without AI. She now gets to be a subject matter expert in her field. I'm using it to organize my home renovation and home projects.

It's a tool. You are upset about the creators, which is fair. I would rather use the new technology while calling for regulations. I feel like that works best for my life.

Cute sentiment but they all harm their surrounding environment and leech the power and water supplies of surrounding neighbourhoods. The long-term consequences for humanity will be far greater than the rewards. 👎🏻👎🏻

2

u/huskers2468 3d ago

That's what regulations are for. Demand the proper ones.

Or you could learn to self-regulate healthily and not ruin the planet.

So offloading cognitive function to a machine? Great.

u/nahnotthisone 3d ago

Even better, a corporation

30

u/somerandomidiot26 3d ago

alternatively you can ask a real person (known as "friends") or better yet dont panic text

u/eggmayonnaise 3d ago

"An AI does not care about your feelings" is the real takeaway here, as it won't care one bit while it gobbles up all your detailed personal relationship information and builds a complex database about you and everyone you love. 😉

I actually did this for a while. At first, it really seemed to help, but after a while I realized it was also riling me up and I was making decisions I normally wouldn’t.

Decided to stop talking to AI about this kind of stuff after that.

People seem to forget, because of sensationalized news stories, that AI is not sentient. AI, especially in this form, is still at the stage where it does what it’s told. If you state a clear goal within your question, it will give you what it thinks you want to hear. Sometimes this is inaccurate information, though, because something in the question was wrong, but it will try to do as you prompted.

TLDR: Your prompts can be flawed by bias (that you don’t see) to give you the result you want. AI isn’t thinking, it’s querying. Think for yourself. It’s healthier.

2

u/jelony 3d ago

Absolutely. And this + being emotional and not thinking straight is a really bad combination.

7

u/BurdBuster 3d ago

Or maybe think for yourself and find ways to regulate your own decision making? 🤷

u/llamasauce 3d ago

Terrible advice. Do not use AI for things like this.

19

u/AshFall81 3d ago

Downvoted, because: Instead, practice mindfulness and recognising your own patterns, noticing when to take a step back from your impulses even when (especially when) it is very hard.

Do not rely on an outside agent, this is a skill you must internalise. You should not replace self-regulation, the application of moderation and constraint, and self talk with an LLM.

LLM:s carry programmed biases and constraints, it is neither an actor nor objective.

Pissing in the ocean is better for the planet.

6

u/PeachMan- 3d ago

Using a chatbot as a therapist is a TERRIBLE idea, and this is terrible advice.

4

u/Pandering_Panda7879 3d ago

YSK if you're emotionally triggered, write down your thoughts on a piece of paper and don't touch your phone for a while.

There, fixed it for you

5

u/peridaniel 3d ago

you could also just use your notes app to get the emotional thoughts out, and/or talk to an actual human being third party about it first. has always worked wonders for me and has the bonus of not using the environment destroying water wasting machine

3

u/RepulsiveLoquat418 3d ago

this is an appallingly bad take, suggesting people replace critical thinking and emotional control with AI.

2

u/RachelRegina 3d ago

Or how about we let people be people and not have the silicon dictate to people how to feel? I'm generally fairly pro AI for double checking reasoning but I'm not trying to become an emotionless husk because of one either. Being a messy, feeling human and not a corporate approved robot is part of the fucking human experience that I would like to preserve.

2

u/xdeltax97 3d ago

How about using critical thinking and not using A.I?

-1

u/huskers2468 3d ago

Lol good luck with this one. I see where you are coming from.

Hey, stop suggesting to use AI chatbots. Generative AI is a drunken stain on humanity. It’s objectively making us collectively dumber. STOP USING IT. People have developed healthy ways of learning and healing before these lame, environmentally destructive, creative-killing robots came along. 👎🏻👎🏻
