Came back to knitting after years and apparently a yarn ball winder is standard now?

Picked needles back up after maybe twelve years off and whole gear situation has changed on me. Last time I knit you wound your yarn into a ball by hand off the back of a chair and that was just life.

Now everyone has got a yarn ball winder making these neat little cakes and I feel like I missed a memo somewhere. Are they genuinely worth it for someone who knits a few hours a week? I am not against tools but my budget is small and my apartment is smaller, talk me into it or out of it.

Is this yarn safe?

I am 90% sure I'm going to throw it out. I have no idea how it's been stored other than 1. For years 2. in cardboard boxes. There are like 30 of them.

Appreciate any horror stories about old/dirty yarn! I'm responsible for restarting a knitting circle at a senior center and they are definitely going to try to save the yarn with "It's just a bit of dirt!"

I need a skein to finish a sweater and the current lots are really different then the two I bought at my LYS a few months ago. They don't carry it anymore and had changed hands so I suspect it wasn't recently stocked. Help! :)

I'm desperate. Can anyone help me identify this yarn?

I thought I bought enough for this project and I swear I kept the label, but idk where it went. I bought it over a year and a half ago at Joann's. I have combed through yarn catalogs and craft sites, I literally keep a piece of this yarn in my car so I can try to match it every time I go to a new craft store. This is my last desperate attempt.

I'm pretty sure it's weight 4 but looks thicker because it's plush. It's very soft but a bit fuzzier and less sleek than many other plush yarns I've seen. Probably loops & threads, big twist, or bernat but I'm not positive. I've included loops & threads bright red (#VS04) as comparison. It was also sold in a big ball, closer to the size of a basketball, as opposed to the narrower pill-shape that most skeins are in.

I know this isn't much, but please, if anyone can help, please please let me know.

I wanted to share this as I’m going through my inherited yarn. I found another skein(?) of older yarn. This one has a label! No date or year so I have no idea, at first glance, how old it is. It’s exciting to have a little more understanding now when it comes to this yarn. I’m happy to think that I’ll be honoring an older family member who would buy yarn but had a hard time allowing herself to “use the nice stuff” as I’m being told ❤️‍🩹🥲

Almost cried at a yard sale

My dear husband pulled over because he has sharp eyes and spotted a ton of yarn at a yard sale. He was correct, bins and bins not all cheap stuff either. I started picking some out then I noticed. The bagged yarn had water in the bags! Did a sniff test on the other yarn and it failed. Had to walk away before I thought about it too much. Knew if I stayed I would be trying to figure out how to wash it. Had already been planning this white blanket I was going to make with all the white cotton yarn they had. $1 per skein😭. Had to complain to someone who would understand. How does water or liquid get into bagged yarn?!?! PNW life everything is soggy!

im currently working on a throw blanket and im running out of my white yarn, i tried getting what i thought would be a good replacement but the textures totally off, its slightly thicker than what ive been using, and the color is also slightly off. i made a test swatch of the new yarn (img1), what ive been working with (img2), with a comparison of the color and thickness. the replacement one i bought is knitpicks dishie cone which i shouldve known with my history with cotton and its texture... please let me know if anyone can recognize the yarn and its brand!!

What is the best yarn for amigurumi? I want a soft yarn and there are so many different types.

when do you think a cheap yarn winder stops being worth it?

My yarn winder started making a grinding sound around two months ago, but I kept ignoring it. Finally plastic gear got stripped and whole arm seized mid skien. I have already replaced them twice and it has started to feel like they don't last much and I need to buy them again and again. I need something which can work longer than a season at least.

Is there a good natural fiber/partially natural yarn out there that doesn’t smell like a barnyard when wet?

It’s silly but I just can’t get over the wet sheep smell ever since I blocked a wool blanket amidst pregnancy nausea🤦🏻‍♀️

Does anyone know a similar yarn to this? I believe it was from bargain buys (uk) a longgg time ago, but just started a project with it and don’t have enough, if anyone has any suggestions I’d be super grateful and appreciative!!! Thank you 💗

What kind of yarn?

Soooo I inherited a box of yarn. I’m wondering if anyone here can help me identify what one of the yarns is either made up of or what it’s for. It’s very thin and kind of in a lump and I’m not sure how I would use it. Any knowledge about this would be appreciated.

What's your best yardage guess on this one?

I received this soft yellow slub yarn a while back. It is clean! I’ve done a few small swatches on different needle sizes and it works up really nicely. I’ll probably knit it on 3/3.5mm needles.

However, there is no label, no yards, no nothing… and therefore no way for me to buy more in case I run out. I can't take it off the cone (unless I wind it ALL down), so I also don't know how much it weighs. I'm a little lost! I’d like to know what I can reasonably expect to be able to make with just this one cone.

I hope there’s more experienced people in this sub that can give a guesstimate on how much yarn this is?

EDIT: I also just asked AI. It's about 25 wpi (but slubby, so I don't really know if that counts for anything). Likely the thin strand parts are actually superfine (or even lace?) weight. The entire thing including cone weighs 520 grams. AI estimates about 850 yards. Does that sound like it makes sense?

Where to buy yarn and other sewing equipment in bulk?

I’m looking for somewhere (online or in-store) to buy yarn, thread, buttons, sewing needles, etc.

Ideally somewhere that sells them in bulk or atleast cheaper than amazon.

Thanks!

Yarn substitute???

I'm an idiot. I bought yarn on sale knowing it was probably being liquidated. I told myself I would finish the blanket fast in case I needed to order more before they sold out... Then I didn't!!!

This is premier poppy yarn in the color herb. Super bulky yarn that's 80% acrylic 20% wool.

I already tried a quick yarnsub.com search with no results.

Can you help me find this yarn?! A good substitute that's same or almost same color? Or... What would you do to finish this blanket with an alternative?
