[SPOILER] I just had my first retaliation mission in The Long War 2. I need a hug.

I was trying to rescue the resistance pinned down in a diner. Advent came in on all sides, and the chosen hunter was there. I had 8 deaths, 2 captured, 5 wounded. It was my a-team, and not only did I lose my best men but I lost my best equipment. Even greensweater was like "Abandon the mission, get your men out of there!"

Sigh. I had the future of humanity in my hands, and I fumbled it. That's xcom, baby.

Had my most intense fight against the chosen assassin, legendary ironman

During the fight I honestly thought it was over, but kept fighting to the end. Somehow I still managed to win. Lost my second best spark though, it served me well

Pretty sure these are the best numbers I've ever seen for a resistance op (Legendary Ironman run)

Genuinely thought only 2 had died (no evidence of the other 2 dying) but still great numbers

God damn Assassin with All Seeing

Just when i thought i might finally get to finish a Legendary Ironman playthrough, here comes the Assassin and what do you know, she has the all-seeing trait. So the traditional tactics of using a Reaper to reveal her no longer work.

First encounter with her cost me my Ranger. Second my Grenadier.

Any advice on how to deal with her without somebody getting murdered every time?

Reoccurring runs setup

A question for the players who’ve been playing for a while now, what is the agreed upon way that players should typically start their next runs after their first play through?

Early settings, should you include QOL mods, is it cheating to start with a faction unit? Etc.

Enemy No Longer Targetable after Grenade

Situation:

An enemy is behind cover. Can be targeted, say by a sniper

Now I blow up the cover with a grenade. Then I want to shoot the now exposed enemy with the same sniper. No longer targetable

Is there a good explanation for this? Is this a bug? Happens from time to time

Love & hate relationship with snipers.

That the snipers are absolutely batshit OP in late game is undeniable.

But XCOM 2 is a game that is the hardest in the early to mid stages of the playthrough. So yeah, snipers can take down a Gatekeeper in one turn later on, but by then, you have a lot of troops that are OP is one way or another.

In early game however, i have come to despise snipers. Unless the shot in at least 85%, dont even bother taking it, it almost a guaranteed miss. Same goes for overwatch with snipers. The only thing they are really good for in early game is triggering overwatch traps. And even then they miss half the time.

I have had wounded troops because the sniper just fucking could not hit shit no matter what. At this point, i would have just been better off with another ranger or support. The Combat Protocol is at least a guaranteed 2 damage to finish off that one Trooper that is going to shoot one of your guys on the next turn because the blind bumbfuck sniper missed him.

Beat my first Campaign :D, only 100 deaths...

The closest I came to giving up was after losing my entire roster during a Chosen Ship Invasion except for 1 sniper who ran around praying for the turrets to steal the win. Afterwards, I had to throw fresh faced recruits into trial by fires missions just to rebuilt the squad, after all, the aliens continue to make progress on the avatar project :)

Edit: someone mentioned the memorial and I checked, and counted a much more respectable 56 deaths. I did some digging and found this post https://www.reddit.com/r/XCOM2/comments/wpgjb2/dont_know_how_it_got_to_99_memorial_says_i_only/, so it looks like that 100 tally might include resistance allies, civilians or mind controlled units.

Legendary is depressing

I find the early to mid game on commander a challenge to get through cleanly, but manageable. Legendary is a whole other game - while I think if I stick with it I can likely grind a win out at some point (getting to tier 3 weapons), but it's such a mental slog. If your soldier trips they are out for 50+ days. I likely the increased combat challenge but I'm clearly not good enough at not ever getting hit as my whole squad ends up nicked up and on the shelf for months at a time. Is it just a case of getting your game to a point where you don't take damage?

Is there any way to fix the bug of soldiers not being able to be picked up?

I have a Chosen mission saved where a soldier is bleeding out near the end, but I can't pick them up. I know it's a bug with nonexistent elevation. Is there any workaround or mod to help?

Chosen AI

So, the AI for the Chosen seems to be very weird. Maybe i just don't understand the incredible alien intellect but aside from the assassin the other two always act strange.

For example, when the sniper shows up, whenever he is not using his killzone ability, he is... jumping down a building.. using his second move to grapple up a building. Running from one cover to the next on the same roof. Just random movement, without any tactical advantage.

I would've thought he would stay back yes, he is a sniper after all, but why only use his killzone every 2 or 3 rounds, why not every round? Why no "squadsight" shots from off screen?

And the warlock only ever hangs back in my games and summons a zombie or two, when there are no other enemies around me, so that has never ever bothered me. I think i can recall one instance where he used a mind control on one of my guys, but that was it.

I have maybe lost one soldier to the sniper and warlock in all of my games combined. And, aside from scripted events, i believe i have never had a single soldier captured by anyone.

The assassin seems fine, at least she engages and regularly gets sneak-hits in that stun my people.

Maybe its the difficulty, but I think even on commander they had these symptoms. Have not played on legend yet.

Anyone else have the same "problems" with the chosen? Do i jsut play on easy mode?

Any other games like Xcom series with "cut to the action during attack" moments?

I love games that do this like Xcom does. Was wondering if there were any more like it that I haven't already played or seen? Here's some more examples that do it

Mutant Year Zero
Miasma Chronicles
Marvels Midnight Sun

I know that Star Wars title is coming out may do it too, but anything else out there? Preferably fantasy setting?

Constant Crashing

This is my first ever reddit post, and it's all because the game I love has been brutally infuriating and it's only an issue i've had with the PC version. I can play about 10 minutes or 1-3 turns in the Legacy Missions section before the game just crashes. I've tried using AML and i've messed with the graphic settings. Ive verified all of my files with steam and even deleted the configs so they'd be refreshed. I need some serious help i already rage deleted the game but i really do love playing it and would like fixes or suggestions on how to fix it.

I still absolutely love how the War of the Chosen is basically a Star Trek TNG reunion tour

My fave tv show of all time crossed with one of my fave games ever. I’m replaying the game again and never get tired of hearing Johnathon Frakes, Micheal Dorn or John DeLancie

Would have loved to have Brent Spiner or Patrick Stewart in too, what roles do you think they could have played? I love getting a Skirmisher with Worf’s voice or a Marina Sirtis Reaper

EDIT: if they make xcom 3 it better damn well have the cast of Frasier doing the voices

Does anyone continue to use the Skulljack after the main story use?

I have tried to in the past but it’s always so inconvenient to pull off that I haven’t bothered. Does anyone use it?

Just wanted to vent…

Just had one of those runs where I must have missed 15 or more shots over 70%, most of which were 80s and 90s. Three shots in a row that were over 90. I ran up on a guy with no cover, two squares away with three different guys, all missed.

The first 90+ I missed, well that’s XCOM, thats why I have back ups. And another miss and another. Whole damn mission.

Still could have one until the Hunter chosen guy hit two my guys with bleeds saved the first, lost the second, whole squad is screwed, more bad guys air drop in, and just quit that run.

Reload last save point. I don’t mind some bad luck, that was too much BS.

Does the AVATAR sabotage covert action stop the countdown?

Okay, so remember that screenshot i posted in rage a couple of days ago? When that Stun Lancer made me fail the retaliation mission by blowing up the entire resistance group?

So i managed to salvage the run, despite the setback, and so far is going pretty well. I just got mag weapons for everyone and i only lost two guys so far in the playthrough.

Now the aliens are on the verge of completing the Avatar projects (just entered the countdown mode). But it is not a big deal because i have planned for this, and i am in the position to assault their largest facility when ever i chose (4 blocks).

The thing is that i also currently have a covert action to reduce the avatar progress going. It should be completed before the countdown timer runs out. So i am wondering if it would be smarter to just let the covert action stop the timer, and then assault the actual facility when i am even better equipped (mainly when i have bluescreen protocol unlocked).

First timer 3 hours in

Somehow i got the xcom in my feeds in reddit and that made me think that i had that game for free on Epic some ages ago. So yesterday when i had nothing to do i played it for the first time in my life.

This game doesnt hold your hand 🫣, i get some Advance Wars vibe and i dig it. My dudes miss all the time, good thing one of them got a sword and almost solo the scenarios sofar. I have no idea what i research or what that Avatar thing is in the middle of the ocean but i am having a blast and feel as a badass.

Sofar 8 missions in and 0 dead, so thats great 🥳👍

Edit

Last night went bad 😬, my last mission for the night i made a bad judgment call. Thought i had 1 monster left, but after running to the mob i was jumped by 3 other dudes. My poor ranger got fucked and my other 3 dudes were to far away and all needed to reload. Won with a lucky crit but 2 dead and 2 wounded (one for 21 days 😬).

My next mission will be with 3 rookies and one lvl 1 sniper, yikes.

What a lovely game 🥳👍

How do you equip your soldiers?

I need some advice when it comes to weapon selection but more importantly armor.

I'm on my second run and now abusing W.A.R amor. Also I really like armor from rulers but feel like I could improve on selection.

Like who is best to wear RAGE armor, as well as others

Also, is using Chosen weapons optimal or should I sometimes go with regular weapons?

Whom do you give a warlock's gun to?

And lastly, can someone please explain skulljack, skullmining or whatever it's called? I see these in proving grounds but haven't tried it out yet, honestly have no idea what they are for and would like to know before my third run
